Dr. Jon Marks

Hi Dr. Marks! How are you doing? Well, I would tell any parent that I come in contact with...if you want a pediatrician to blow smoke up your you know what, Dr. Jon Marks is your man. If you want someone to tell you that everything is fine, you've come to the right place. When my child left the examining room because I told you that I wanted to speak one on one, I asked you what my son’s goal weight should be. You said, “I can’t tell you that.” I asked why, and you told me that you didn’t use target weights. Then I said, okay, give me a ball park like within 10 pounds either way. Nothing. Within 20 pounds either way. You said I cannot tell you. You said you don't really believe in a target weight. 25 pounds either way. I'm giving you a 50 pound cushion. Nothing. I said, "Well you just examined him. Does he even need to lose weight? (And the truth is unfortunately yes by the way, and the problem has gotten worse.) You again went with the good ole comeback… I can't tell you. Then you told me that it all comes down to nutrition and exercise. I thought to myself, really? Gee wiz, now why didn't I think of that. Hallelujah, I have seen the light! Consider me enlightened and educated. Dr. Marks, you are brilliant! I told you that when I was a kid, my pediatrician would tell it to my parents straight. You felt insulted and said, “I’m out of here” and you walked out of the examining room and went to go hide somewhere down the hall. On my part, no cursing, no threats, just asking the questions like a smart patient or parent should do. I know there are still excellent doctors around. Honest doctors who tell it to you straight. Doctors who tell parents and maybe the kids if they are old enough to hear it…this is where we are, this is where we need to be, and this is how we will get there. But not everyone wants the truth. Some patients just want lip service, and that’s what you give when you are not retreating from questions. But to be a real doctor, I’m sure it takes courage, not cowardice. Guess what? I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you and your operations manager go out and have a beer, or in your case, a wine cooler. Then you can share a few laughs and pat each other on the back and talk about how good you are. For me, I don’t want your smoke. John Friedman
