If it doesn't work, there is always a backup plan. The idea that he accepts money from the pharmaceutical companies is ludicrous. Yes, the drug rep will bring a cake or box of treats for the office when s/he drops by. I no longer live in the Atlanta area, and God, do I miss the good doctor. The psychiatrists in my area should be in therapy instead of trying to help others. Miss you doctor. Dr. Straetmans helped me a few years ago, then I had to move. Dr Straetmans is one of the very very few doctors that I have trusted and knew he heard me. He was always straightforward and I like that. He is the very best. If I did not live so far, I would gladly have him as my doctor.

Dr. Straetmans has helped me for a number of years to be very successful. My experience is that he will help you if you are willing to put in the effort, but he will travel at your pace. I highly recommend for anyone who is ready to change some destructive life practices and addictions.

What type of business has a $100 cancellation fee? I have a cold and tried cancelling my appointment but now I can't unless I want to pay $100. He prescribes good meds but the staff is horrible. I'm going to find another psychiatrist. Edit: Most businesses under therapy and psychiatry make you pay a cancellation fee. I don’t agree with it but it’s the way it is. So I’m bumping my review up from 2 to 4 stars. He really does prescribe good meds without trying to just turn you into a medication zombie. He’ll work with you if you let him. Dr Straetsmans is the first psychiatrist i have had that i feel he truly has my best interests at heart. His wife, Mary and son Patrick are always VERY helpful. Highly recommend this family psychiatrist practice for addiction and treatment. ????

I have been seeing Dr. Straetmans for almost seven years and have found his understanding, patience and concern to be a valuable part of my healing. He has been in the arena long enough to spot so many different aspects of patient care, in my opinion. I really wanted help, and he was and still is helping me to remain successful.

I transferred from one doctor who couldn't care less (I had a horrible reaction to the meds he prescribed and could not reach him) to Dr. Straetmans. I am thrilled with him. If I don't like something, I can reach him same day. He will listen to whatever I say or question, and give immediate feedback. He is very intelligent and very experienced. I was shocked at my diagnosis, but he must be right as the meds are helping me. He also gave me something for sleep (I don't like this kind of stuff, but he said 4 or 5 hours each night is not enough). I am very sensitive and the next day I was a walking zombie. I had told him I would drop it if it drugged me the next day. But I called him, talked directly to him and he gave me a succinct answer: cut it in half. That worked much better and I may go to 1/3rd, but my sleep has increase by about 2 hours. Hooray! I have seen Dr. Straetmans for several years. I have had only very positive experiences with himself and the staff. He seems to care about me as a person as well as a patient, and has adjusted medication several times until we found what worked. We tried several medications, so I can't believe (like a few people said) that he would receive kickbacks for all of them or any of them. I can't think of any reason I would want to go anywhere else. The staff are upfront about insurance and what he can/can't provide. So here's the thing: we may or may not like someone's personality (in my case,, I find Dr. Straetmans funny and caring), but we go to the doctor to get treatment. I would recommend Dr. Straetmans to anyone. He is very attentive and the medication he prescribed has helped me tremendously.

I would never set foot in his office again. I was in a difficult Greif situation and in 20 minutes I was diagnosed as bipolar, provided a prescription and sent on my way - no explanation or anything all for $250! I never took one pill and am fine. My son was sent there too by his IOP. Again perscibed medication that caused more problems than helped. Think about your life and whose hands you choose to put it in... someone who truly cares or just writes scripts.

He didn’t look away from his computer at all. He made all of these assumptions instead of doing his job. My husband was there for help. He received none. Just a bill. Don’t let Mary’s kindness confuse you, John Straetman is not helpful.

I have been with Dr. Straetmans for well over 20 years. He has helped me through a lot of my ups and downs throughout my life. I owe a great deal to him. I highly recommend him.

Odd experience indeed. He asked that I sit facing away from him as he typed on his computer. He rarely asked me questions and seemed to be dictating into his keyboard. After about 20 minutes he says "ok, we're done...come back in a month". So nope, won't be doing that. Other than prescribing some pills he doesn't really do anything.

The Dr. is upfront and deals with you straight on with the 10-15 minutes a month the insurance company pays him to see you.. The guy at the front and answering the phone is absolutely incredulous, rude, uneducated, and should be fired. I have heard him speak horribly to patients on the phone and in the office, sometimes being absolutely hostile to patients where were already in a state of distress. This is unfortunate because the doctor seems to care about his patients. Fire this guy!

Dr. John P Straetmans is just another money grubbing pill pusher a coward afraid to have an opinion. 15 mins. for $150 is legalized stealing.

I just called Straetmans office to schedule an appointment a referral from my doctor who retired last week. All I got was what "he doesn't do" or what medications he "only provides" or "doesn't provide". I feel like...I need a doctor that will listen to me and my needs what has worked in the past and what side effects I have had with medications and go based on that information. Dr. Straetmans saved my life! I went through many doctors while going through a very deep depression and he was able to get me out. I am no longer living in the area but I can not say enough about the impact he had on my life. I know at the time I felt frustration but I was miserable initially. I hope he can work wonders for you too.

I have been with him 20 years after spending several years suffering and hunting for an expert. None better in Atlanta area. Mary runs the office and can be a little short with you but has the best intentions. She is very knowledgeable and fair. She runs a tight ship so the doctor can work. Make an appointment and be there on time if you want to help her do her job.

I have seen Dr. Straetmans off and on for years. Love the puntualness, I have never had to wait more than 5 min. for my appointment. He listens, and is very helpful in finding the correct medication or combination of medication. Very intuitive Doctor.

Very good doctor. Seen him for two years. He's cautious with the prescription pad but forthcoming about it. He is sincere and takes a more holistic approach to his treatment (checking blood pressure and weight). He is punctual with his appointment times, and I've never had a problem with scheduling. His staff is not always cheery, but I don't expect that from my doctors. Mary is very knowledgeable and always helpful. I don't believe in 5-star docs, so only giving 4, but would highly recommend.

Dr. Straetmans is very nice and listens to what I have to say. This is different that speaking with a therapist, counselor or psychologist. Psychiatry is about the medicinal aspect, so the visits are far shorter and seem more rushed, but it's really about checking progress and re-prescribing meds. The office staff is extremely nice and polite. There have been times were I thought they were a little spacey, but they are professional and courteous and have helped me with everything I needed.

I have never had a worse experience with office staff before. Mary is a amazingly incompetent and has the tone of someone with a wasp's nest permanently embedded in her bum.

If you like someone with attitude who doesn't know how to approach clients or providers, you'll have a blast here.

Rude receptionist is why I would not book an appointment here.
