Dr. John Stephen Reach JR.

Dr Reach replaced my right ankle in August of 2011 at Yale and I was back in full operation by December! I haven’t looked back since! I have been pain free for 11+ years and counting! Dr Reach is excellent and extremely thorough and I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Reach!

Took the needed time to answer all questions.

I cannot begin to tell you how Dr Reach changed my life. In Sept-2016 he performed what I consider to be a miracle surgery on my very painful ankle. I was 66yrs old at the time, 6'2" and 250lbs ... a big guy and active for my age. I'd had a nasty sports injury 35yrs earlier and still had 9 big screws I hadn't ever had removed. The surgery and subsequent recovery went exactly as Dr Reach had described to me beforehand, and within 10wks I was walking again normally. And now at nearly age 73 I am happy to report that my replacement ankle still feels just as good as new and I am not prevented from pursuing my favorite outdoor and exercise activities. Dr Reach you are simply the best in my book!

Dr Reach is both professional and personable. He takes the time to explain things in detail. Great surgeon! Extremely knowledgeable and caring. Ihighly recommend him.

Staff is very friendly, and helpful. Dr. Reach is very thorough and not in a rush. Explains diagnosis fully. Gave me options of how I wanted to proceed. Ended up having a triple ankle fusion. 1.5 yrs ago. 1 year post op, able to fly to Glacier and hike!! Can drive, walk, hike relatively pain free

Dr. Reach and his staff are very empathetic, helpful and professional. The caring and kindness of Dr. Reach was felt immediately.

Dr. Reach is always personable, caring, and gives us his full attention. My husband has appreciated his continued care for his ankle.

Dr. Reach is excellent - he is knowledgeable, conveys information thoroughly and clearly, and impresses as very caring and considerate of his patients. I appreciated both the level of expertise and efficiency of the visit.

My Total Ankle Replacement surgery was performed by Dr Reach and his team at Yale-New Haven Hosp when I was 66yrs old in Sept-2016. Now going on 6yrs later I am happy to report that the surgery was a complete success, the entire procedure and recovery was absolutely as predicted. I could not be more impressed with the skill and confidence I felt with Dr. Reach. One downside no one prepared me for : I let my ankle go without surgery for at least 25 -30yrs after previous ankle surgery. This changed my gait and unbeknownst to me this wore my hip joint prematurely on same leg and I had to have hip replacement late 2018. Both replacements are working beautifully. Dr. Reach is a perfectionist!

He has disappeared? Where is dr. Reach now? After doing a horrible surgery on my sister....he never cared...never helped fix his error. He is not good. Avoid this doctor at all costs. If u love to walk.....STAY AWAY FROM HIM.

Staff very lackluster, very very long wait time in the waiting room

A multitude of errors: Virtual visit scheduled, did not call, was told he was running late and he would call soon. 1 hour later, called back, was told it was rescheduled to 10:00 AM, nobody called and notified me of that, was then told it was internet issues, and now the call was scheduled for 5:00 PM. Doctor called @ 5:45 said the office should have said, "at end of rounds, not 5:00" After call, went to office for a specimen to be sent to lab, was told about 5 days. After 10 days of not hearing, called back left a message no return call. 3 days later, called back, they said they would ck and call back. Never called back, I called left a message. When they finally returned my call, they informed me the lab lost my results. You would think if a practice does not have any results to a test, they would follow up with the lab. Dr. Reach may be a good doctor, I will never know, as the lack of communication and miscommunication of the staff has soured me on the practice.

Dr. Reach and his staff are terrific! I appreciate that Dr. Reach explains injury and care extremely well, and performed my surgery perfectly. His staff also take great care in their professions, from nursing. X-rays to billing, each interaction has been pleasant,

Dr. Reach is fantastic. He takes the time to listen to you and understand your goals for the visit and what you're hoping to get out of the appointment, rather than coming in with a fixed perspective. He is very empathetic, eager to help and find the best care options for you as the patient. I would highly recommend. Very skilled and knowledgable. Well read on the current science, research, and advancements in medicine and treatment options. Very pleased!!

I made the mistake of going to a doctor that my rheumatologist referred me to for a bone fusion in my ankle. I ended up with a macerated wound from the cast and the doctor left a chunk of metal in my ankle. After several months of torture I went to Dr. Reach. He found that I had a raging infection in my ankle and he saw the piece of metal in the MRI. After two operations Dr. Reach was able to save my foot. After I healed from the infection he performed the triple fusion I needed. Dr. Reach is amazing! He may run late with appointments but it is because he truly cares about his patients. I was shocked by how much he remembered about myself and my daughter. He is kind, thoughtful, and very respectful. I am also very impressed by his staff. I would highly recommend Dr. Reach. Btw, neither the other doctor OR the person who read the MRI saw the chunk of metal that caused the infection. It took Dr. Reach one look and he saw it right away. I am grateful to Dr. Reach for saving my foot!

Dr. Reach seemed very expert and I trusted his diagnosis of a navicular fracture and his conclusion that a brace was the only option for my shredded tendon. As an active person, I was frustrated at the prospect of spending the rest of my life in a brace. After working hard at recovery in PT, I finally went for a second opinion - accessory navicular, not a fracture, and a surgical option for repair of the tendon. I am a year and a half out from that surgery and hiking again and working in a job that has me on my feet all day and I'm doing great. I respect that Dr. Reach didn't have a surgical option that he could offer me, but I think he should have referred me out.

Dr. Reach was very knowledgeable and very helpful. He is a great doctor who listens intently to the patient. Dr. Reach did a fantastic job with my complex ankle break. He was genuinely concerned with my healing. I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Reach was great. He gave me options for my ankle problem and did not automatically recommend surgery. That is exactly what I want to hear from any doctor. He was professional, friendly, funny and made me feel very relaxed and confident. I know I will be in good hands regarding my health issue.

As usual the entire staff I came in contact with was super especially as usual Dr Reach Provision of expert medical care. After all that is really what you want when you visit your Doc.

Ankle foot surgery almost two years ago. Still in a heavy boot. Can’t walk barefoot. Can’t put weight on my foot. No surgeons can help me. Two surgeons said cut the leg off. The surgery ruined my Life

Excellent surgeon and Dr he actually listens to his patients and doesn’t talk at you. I have had 2 complex reconstruction surgeries with Dr Reach and he had to break my original failed ORIF and nonunion got it to heal very talented he performed a vascular graft to my fracture I’m glad that there are good surgeon’s out there.

Incredibly thorough, spends as much time as you need , holistic comprehensive approach with multiple options given. Highly recommend .

My PMP recommended Dr. Reach. I am so happy she did. I liked him because he was so knowledgeable, listened to me and explained things in a way I understand. Very happy with Dr. Reach. The expertise thus far of Dr. Reach. I anticipate that my concerns will be taken seriously and addressed.

Everything went so smoothly, even though it was during the pandemic. Dr Reach and his staff were terrific!

Dr Reach is topmost in patient care: listens carefully; is fluent in the research (some of which he has contributed to); highly adept in injections, and telling jokes to comfort and distract when necessary!

Dr. Reach was very attentive and took the time to answer my questions. I never felt rushed. If I ever need an ankle replacement I would definitely go back to him. Office and reception area were in a healthy state and seemed to abide by the standards recommended by the CDC.

Had to wait a while, but the visit with Dr. Reach was helpful and gave me a good idea of what are my options. Felt that I got an individualized meeting with Dr. Reach and did not feel at all rushed. He answered all my questions in ways that I could understand.

I went to Dr. Reach on the recommendation of my physical therapist. This fall, he did some pretty substantial repair work on my left ankle. The results were excellent. I am two months out from surgery now, and I am walking easily and with minimal discomfort, and the ankle already feels stronger than it did pre-surgery. No surgery is easy, but my recovery thus far has been much less arduous than I expected. I found Dr. Reach to be very responsive to my concerns. He had a friendly manner and seemed to make efforts to put me at ease during office visits. He and his assistant Megan were very helpful, both pre and post surgery, and willingly accommodated special requests that I made. Over the years I have I have had five surgeries on my feet and four on my hands. Some successful, and some decidedly not so. At this point I feel as if I am in a position to offer an informed judgment as to the quality of a surgeon’s work. I highly recommend Dr. Reach.

Simply the best. Six years ago my ankle problem was misdiagnosed and I had what turned out to be an unnecessary operation. I found Dr. Reach who thoroughly analyzed my problem and performed surgery that worked! I've been pain free for the last five years. I recently saw him to evaluate my other ankle. Again, I valued the thoroughness of his examination and his personal attention. Extremely good at evaluating the whole issue and explaining his conclusion on treatment. His knowledge instills confidence.

I was extremely impressed with Dr. Reach. He is clearly very knowledgeable and thoughtful. I went to him for a second opinion for a break that is not healing properly and I finally felt as though I was in good hands. I am grateful to have found him.

Dr. Reach is an awesome surgeon, I had both of my ankles replaced by him. Before the replacements I had the guided injections that bought me some time before having to be replaced. He is very knowledgeable and knows his specialty. I highly recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Reach is the best! I was under care of a Doctor for over two years prior to visiting Dr. Reach in Summer of 2016. My condition got worse every day under the wrong care, to the point that I thought my physical active life had ended. I searched and found Dr. Reach and within 6 month of my first visit, he had relieved my ankle pain and feeling better, with the possibility of having a total ankle replacement. In November of 2017 it happened, he replaced my left ankle and by November of 2018, I was more active than I had been in 15 years. Today in 2020, my left ankle replacement is pain free and more stabile than my right ankle. In the near future, I will not even hesitate to ask him to work on my right ankle, as the results of my left ankle are simply remarkable. Don't fool around with foot Doctor's that give you no results, Doctor Reach can honestly help you.

The check in process was easy and safe. My temp was taken upon arrival and hand sanitizer was available. Everyone was wearing a mask and the waiting room was appropriately set up for social distancing. I had X-rays taken prior to seeing Dr. Reach. The staff was professional and explained things clearly. Dr. Reach introduced himself, was personable, professional and seemed interested in my ankle issue. He explained my pain using my X-rays and prescribed an MRI to verify his diagnosis. He made me feel comfortable and I felt he was able to help me. I felt in a safe environment with caring, educated medical personnel.

Dr. Reach is caring, extremely competent and willing to spend as much time as needed to address any concerns and answer questions.

Wait time is consistently an hour. Would he wait an hour each time for me???

It was so awful. Dr. Reach was uncaring and matter of fact. He acted as if he couldnt be bothered. If you ever want to walk correctly again...then you should RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN OUT OF THIS GUYS OFFICE! I severely broke my ankle back in 2010 and was left with an inability to walk well. I saw many doctors. I then researched ankle doctors and saw that Dr. Reach was voted among the best in the country according to his peers. After meeting with Dr. Reach he recommended a total ankle replacement, something I’d never heard of before. Dr Reach is a skillful, thoughtful and practical. He is also smart in the sense he surrounds himself with an incredible staff that helps to create a positive patient experience.

After seeing doctors who seemed not to take any interest in my problems and in a rush to put me in major surgery I turned to Dr. Reach. He was wonderful. Gave me a complete understanding of my situation and wanted to take the most conservative approach to fix it. I don't have enough good words for him. Highly recommend.

Two years ago before my first ankle replacement I was in such a bad place. I had given up playing the sports I have loved all my life, basketball, volleyball, soccer...because I couldn't take a step without excruciating pain. I had a debilitating Lisfranc fracture dislocation of my foot which has a high incidence of poor outcome and chronic pain based on the literature. Dr. Reach and his team were very innovative in their approach and took my lifestyle and activity level into consideration and chose a newer style fixation that I have yet to see at any other hospital I have worked at. I'm two years out and I ran my first trail marathon, backpacked a loop over four 12,000ft mountain passes carrying a 35# pack, skied nearly weekly this winter, and returned to rock climbing - 99% pain-free! Dr Reach did a total ankle replacement for me in June 2017. The results have been fantastic, great mobility to the point I often forget it is not my ankle. He and his staff were very professional and fully explained what I should expect throughout the process. Would highly recommend him for any complex ankle procedure,

December 20, 2010, Dr. Reach performed a Total Ankle Replacement, installing a STAR. I was 64 at the time and had a history of problems with my left ankle, which manifested itself in August, 2009, when I developed septic arthritis in the ankle. I resumed playing golf in May 2010, and today play 4/5 times weekly in Florida where I now live. I referred Dr. Reach to two other golfing friends, who like me have their former life back. Put me on top of the list of those who thank Dr. Reach ! Bravo !

I should first start off my saying that Dr. Reach seems to be a very good doctor. My mom was a patient of Dr. Reach, but when she had a very urgent and serious issue come up, he was “unreachable”. His office left us hanging. They told us the wrong place to deliver her records, and then completely lost them before even giving them to the doctor. I have never seen such chaos and disorganization with a medical staff before, or have been treated so rudely by.

You can search and search but you won't find a more compitant and compassionate doctor. He and his team are AMAZING !!!! He took over my son's case , saved the day , and put all our hearts to rest. THANK YOU SO MUCH DR.REACH !!!! You are a real MVP !!!

Dr. Reach is wonderful! He is extremely knowledgable and personable! He spent a lot of time with me and made sure that I fully understood what was going on with my ankle. He listened carefully to my concerns and reassured me that I did not need the surgery recommended by another doctor! The office staff was so friendly and caring as well! Was unable to walk due to distorted foot and ankle for several years. Dr. Reach performed surgery and after several months I was able to walk again and found I had recovered my former life. I will always be grateful to Dr. reach for his compassion and expertise..

Had front foot re-contruction. Six wks no wgt bearing. 12 weeks full wgt bearing, hiking, biking. 9 mos skiing. Now one year, my only regret, as a 70 yr old man, I should have done it 50 years ago. Great doctor. All went as he said it would.

My 15 year old daughter was suffering from chronic foot pain and her previous Ortho could never figure out why. Our very first appointment with Dr. Reach ended up being a MIRACLE! Dr Reach and his wonderful staff figured out her issue immediately. We were scheduled for surgery a few weeks later and it's now been 3 months post surgery and my daughter is better than ever! Dr Reach and his staff were extremely caring and supportive and educated us throughout the whole process. #1 Practice!!

After 6 ankle surgeries that failed to mitigate debilitating pain, we finally found Dr. Reach and are extremely grateful to him. Not only is he competent but very kind, and he instilled the confidence we wished we had received following my husband's accident.

I would very highly recommend Dr. Reach to anyone having arthritic problems with their ankle. He has helped change my life. Just prior to having surgery, I could barely walk on my left ankle. Through his professionalism , conscientious and concern and TALENT, we have come around the corner !!! Along with HARD WORK in physical therapy and diet , I have been pain freein 1 1-2 years and I walk golf courses versus riding. Much thanks to Dr. John Reach !!!!!! Tim Regan
