About Dr. John Xiao-Jiang Qian
Reviews for Dr. John Xiao-Jiang Qian
I know Dr. Qian very well for quite a while and he is one of the worst doctors in San Diego. He is primarily a sleezy workers comp doctor. His social skills are disgusting with an aggressive and condescending tone. It's pretty obvious the guy is just collecting a check and doesn't care about his patients. I really feel sorry for his staff.

I absolutely love Dr. Qian!! And Tammy, front desk, in La Mesa! He is always trying to help my chronic pain. Very caring. Both of them.

I see this doctor at the la mesa office for about 3 years and 1 of my other doctors sent me back to maryland to see a doctor at john Hopkins to see if anything could be done for me and when i got back i went back and they had a pa working for them and he was mad because my other doctor sent to Hopkins and they wouldn't give me my med's and told me to find a new pain management doctor I see this doctor at the la mesa office for about 3 years and 1 of my other doctors sent me back to maryland to see a doctor at john Hopkins to see if anything could be done for me and when i got back i went back and they had a pa working … More
The Dr and PA are GREAT! His FRONT END STAFF, the ones who schedule you and you speak with on the phone, are the WORST I’ve ever encountered! If they don’t answer the phone and you leave a message, they play phone tag with you until they can actually speak to you! If that is the case....they NEED to ANSWER THE PHONE! Write down what the message says! They MAKE you keep your appointment card so if THEY make an error they know who to blame! It’s happened to ME! They DON’T try and fit you in. They reschedule you, which is a HUGE problem when you are relying on them for your 30day RX-fill of narcotics! They are so booked up, I couldn’t get in to either location and had to go with out pain medication for 1 1/2 months because of THEIR MISTAKE! Not professional whatsoever! They have an office manager, however, that was her solution! To rebook! Because it was THEIR FAULT, they SHOULD HAVE SQUEEZED ME IN! My surgeon requested his own pain medication when I had surgery, afraid the problem might reoccur! Then because the surgeon requested authorisation from my insurance company, the pain management Dr. Cheng’s office dropped me as Dr Cheng’s client! The FRONT OFFICE staff doesn’t communicate with the BACK OFFICE staff, and the patient gets caught in the middle! The Dr and PA are GREAT! Dr. Qian is an EXCELLENT doctor. If he had the support staff he could be a leading dr. field. I have been using Dr. Qian for 12 years and I am incredibly grateful he has saved my life and more ways than I could express. My only complaint is that when there is an issue with the pharmacy or a mistake nobody at the office answers the phone or returns phone calls. If he could get that right I’d give them five stars. If there was an option for zero star I would have chosen it, the staff have absolutely no customer service skills whats so ever. You make an app't with Dr. Qian and you will be seen by his PN, you say I made app't to see the Dr today "Oh no he doesn't come on Friday" why didn't you tell me when I made the app't then. You go to treat an ongoing back pain which has been killing you for months, they make knee pain number 1 priority. Not to mention, that the Dr himself is very rude. Be wary of this doctor. I have never been treated with such disrespect and dishonor. They made some big errors that cost me money that I cannot afford and in addition filed claims that further hurt me. Instead of admitting their errors and ensuring I would not incur charges or claims, they treated me like garbage, even to the point that one of their PAs acted like the victim when she was victimizing me. The service provided by Dr. Qian and all of the PA's in the office is amazing and deserves 5 stars. I have seen him for 6 years and always feel like my concerns are heard and addressed each visit. The reason for the 3 stars is the service provided by the staff, more specifically LaVerne. I have spoken with her on numerous occasions and she is rude, not friendly at all and and is very short on the phone. She treats every patient like a child every single time she is on the phone with them and it is even worse in person. Every single time I have called in for assistance, she sounds like I am interrupting her day and an inconvenience for her. She is definitely not someone I would have working in my office, especially considering the fact that she is working in a pain management. I recommend Dr Qain to the people I care about most & to all who are in need of a knowledgeable, caring, supportive Dr. He was the only Dr that I had prior to moving, that I definitely wanted to resume care with when I moved back SD. I thank Dr Qain & his wonderful, professional, congenial staff.
Dr. Quian and his entire group do a tremendous job and truly care about treating me with respect and honor. I have cancers and all that entails and Dr. Quain and his practioner are very astute and helpful with my pain management treatment. I’m better at my work and relationships and feel more clear and healthier everyday. The office staff does a great job as well and are clear and helpful with referrals and scheduling as well being kind and professional in their duties. Dr. Qian has been very helpful and caring regarding my cancer issues, looks me in the eye and listens to my concerns. His staff is always professional and cordial to me every visit. I highly recommend Dr Qian to anyone with PM issues.
Dr. Qian is a great Doctor, I have been seeing him for almost a year now at the Chula Vista Office, He listens to my issues, he recommends different treatments to try and get the max pain relief for me. I suffer from severely advanced osteoarthritis in both hips, protruding disc in lower back with nerve impingement and carpal tunnel in both wrists. I must also point out his PA Jessica is also the very best PA I've ever seen. She is very caring, compassionate and always interested in how I am doi
Front office staff is very short & rude when interacting with patients. It gets worse when seeing the doctor. Dr Qain had no problem scheduling an injection for shoulder pain, that would take 3 weeks to schedule because of insurance approval. He refused to prescribe pain medication while you wait for three weeks for the injection based on needing to "monitor the treatment?" The treatment should be immediate relief with a pain med while awaiting the injection. Ridiculous - NOT pain management

So horrible no consistency
This office and receptionist are clueless and very disorganized. Never had an appointment where I didn't have to wait and for the second time I drove 25 minutes only to be told my appointment was scheduled for another time.
Absolutely disgusting!! The doctor was unprofessional and extremely rude, not to mention he loves to yell at the patient. No manners, no respect, and absolutely only cares about his license instead of the patients health.
This clinic is the most dysfunctional medical office ever. The staff are rude and unprofessional. Service is horrible. I had appointments three times in a row, but my appointments were not honored. The Dr is never there and the office is run by PAs.
Dr. Is great, staff is absolutely terrible...
They double book or triple book almost all his patients. My first appointment there I waited over an hour to get in. The waiting room is very small only seats 10 people and is very uncomfortable because there is usually many more people in there. Ramona (I believe her name is) is the front desk nurse for most visits I've been to and she is very kind. Because of my age though I feel discriminated against because I am told I'm too young to have pain yet have been diagnosed with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, Arthritis in my wrists, Severe sciatica & finally an MRI confirming I have a slipped disc between L5-S1 but they made me feel as if I was lying about my severe pain. Just made me upset to be discriminated against just because of my age! ???? They double book or triple book almost all his patients. My first appointment there I waited over an hour to get in. Waiting at least an hour is to be expected at any doctors office, especially a specialist... Dr. Qian has been very kind, and actually listened to me... He has helped me more than any other doctor I have seen for my injuries... Getting an appointment there can be very difficult and some of the staff there haven't been to helpful nor have they even done there job like they should, however recently I have noticed that the staff has been more helpful and kinder than last year. Not sure what has changed, but I just want to say thank you Dr. & staff for helping me.... A person could not be happier with service given to me. Thanks much Larisa

Dr. Qian has been my pain management doctor for almost 10 years. I began suffering from chronic pain at the age of 20 and found him shortly thereafter - so thankful I did. Even after moving out of state, I would return to see him. He has ALWAYS been attentive to my needs, supportive of the next steps in my healing process and for surgeries, and truly seems to be compassionate to my needs and cares about how I’m feeling, which many doctors don’t. After having fusion surgery (#5), I was left completely debilitated, and he was the ONLY doctor/person who cared enough to attempt to find out why I was experiencing the issues I was. He’s done everything for me from injections, to surgeries, to meds, to caring, he goes above and beyond. I’ve personally never had an issue with the staff as I’ve taken the time to see them as people and not scream in their face when things go wrong. What many reviewers say makes me laugh as Dr. Qian is one of the hardest working physicians I’ve personally seen. He is always in one of their offices, works Mon-Fri in 3 different clinics all over San Diego, performs in office procedures on Tues/Thurs in order to save patients time and money from going to a hospital, and operates in hospitals on Saturdays. He’s available 24/7 via cell/text for emergencies, even encourages calling him when there’s an issue, and he attempts to help everyone by taking practically every insurance that there is. The guy sees 155 patients himself per day not to mention the PA’s patients in addition and is always there before and after their posted business hours. It’s entertaining to me hearing people cry and scream about him online and in the waiting room when they are new or have no clue just how good he actually is which is the reason he takes as long as he does. I urge all of them to find another doctor who does what he does without a wait - best of luck to you all!! I’ve been to numerous pain doctors in San Diego before finding my hero in Dr. Qian. My family and I are so thankful for the wonderful care he’s provided me over the years and his multi-level approach rather than just handing out scripts like most of the people reviewing him seem to want and complain about. He has had staffing issues in the past but over the last couple years have gotten on track with answering phones, PA’s, appointments, and every other service you could need their assistance with. Shelby the office manager is AMAZING, she’s the best I’ve ever seen and especially with how many people they see in a day, her organizational skills are stellar!! She’s incredibly kind and caring about me and how I’m feeling and even takes the time to follow up with me after surgeries, etc. I can’t thank you enough for being there for me always and feeling like I have someone in my corner on the days when I feel the worst! Ramona the receptionist, is always pleasant to me and ensures my appointment needs are met, even if I have to wait a few extra moments, I try to understand how busy they are, and exercise patience, and courtesy, no matter how much pain I’m in. I don’t think anyone understands how much work it takes to handle so many people at once. Laverne who is newer to their practice, and incredibly nice, has spent countless hours on the phone with my insurance company attempting to get my PA’s completed in a timely/urgent manner. I’m honestly so incredibly thankful for Dr. Qian and his staff and feel forever indebted for all that they do for me alongside their caring natures towards my never-ending pain and suffering. I genuinely thank you from the bottom of my heart Dr. Qian - you are ALWAYS worth my wait time, and I appreciate absolutely everything you’ve done for me along the years. You’re my very favorite doctor ever for that matter, you make me feel better on my worst of days, and I’ll follow you until you retire! (Which I hope isn’t for many years since I doubt I’d find anywhere near as good, kind, caring, understanding, or gentle as you are!!) you’re one of the only reasons I stay in San Diego, cause I truly don’t know what I’d do without you all! I've seen many pain management specialists over the years, and Dr. Qian and his associates have always been professional, responsible and listened to each of my concerns. The office is sometimes busy, however a good doctor who takes insurance can be hard to find. He is by no means a pill pusher, but takes a multiple specialty approach, providing referrals for things like physical therapy and braces. Dr. Qian has been able to target my pain through procedures where other doctors have failed. His staff was able to make arrangements for a procedure I needed to be done at a facility that works with my insurance, and although it can sometimes be difficult to get through the phones, a little patience will pay off with the hardworking staff. While the office itself is not terribly pretty, it is functional. There are many treatment rooms and all the equipment and instrumentation necessary to perform many treatments in house. I do not know what is going on behind the scenes with the doctor but his practice has gone down hill over the past two years. Although the office requires that I make monthly visits, I have not seen Dr. Qian in almost a year. Instead I see a ever changing PA. If you are fortunate to see the doctor himself, he is awesome. But as discussed above, you most likely will see him once a year. The absolute worst part of his staff is the front office. They are incompetent & rude!
Tried at least 6 times to schedule appt. no one ever called back.

Dr. Qian is one of the most exceptional doctors that I have had the pleasure to be a patient of. I had to move to Missouri and I have been trying so hard to get ahold of him as I need his attention. I have called the office many times and ask them to please have the doctor call me at my home line or my cell phone. I was told they would make sure Dr Qian would get the message. So I have gone to lengths to try to reach out to him. But as a patient of his for the last 13 years he is just awesome.
every one is nice and attentive and the Dr (s) are genuinely attentive to my issue and provide a number of pain management options. I am content with my diagnosis that they have come up with it all makes perfect sense and helps me be careful not to aggravate it more. Thank you all
I have no idea who he is and can not judge his quality of care, but I can judge the experience i had with the rudest staff i have ever encountered. I was referred to him by the VA and they had no clue what that was. I arrived 30min early and 1hr and a half later I still was not seen. When I asked how much longer I was told they don't know, it's always a long wait. Well I'm not sure if that is acceptable in your world but not in mine.

The worst clinic I ever visited. Rude staff. They are very unprofessional. After three visits, one worst than the other, I decided to go elsewhere.
Dr. Qian Is an excellent pain specialist. He has kept me alive for over ten years my due date. I avoided pain management like the plaque until backed into a corner hospice or take the referral ; but knew a day would come that my tolerance would exceed the amount needed to keep me stable. That could be another 10 years if not for the new laws. He will do his best to help you.
Horrible!! I've written reviews already,my poor mom just had hip replacement surgery and see's wound care every week for debriement and just got a stent put in. The staff is EXTREMELY rude, didn't give a heads up that ALL new patients have to have a psych eval. And staff complains about doing paper work.. then get out of the medical field. We came prepared and they treated my mom like crap. She's new to all this. And now she's out of meds because his staff doesn't know how to do their jobs!
Dr. Qian is the best doctor I've received care from regarding chronic pain. I've been seen and treated by almost ten in the same field here in San Diego and New York. Dr. Qian revised my poorly implanted Spinal Stimulator and I was able to reduce my opiate intake by 60%. He listens, cares and is well liked by his patients. He is remarkably qualified, I would recommend him to anyone who is dealing with chronic pain.
I have never been to a doctor that does so little and yet requires so many visits. Nobody in this office checks vital signs or even follows up on health records. They talk about coordinating with other doctors and calling in to get medications approved, but they don't go beyond prescribing pain killers. When I was in pain and having trouble sleeping, they overmedicated me. Then when new emergent problems occurred, the doctor decided to lower my medication and discharge me from treatment. Just out of nowhere, not even knowing what had happened inside of my body to have caused me all the pain that I was feeling. Their secretaries even hung up on me when I called to explain what happened. Finding a compassionate doctor when you are in chronic pain can be the difference between living some quality of life or just completely suffering through it. I just hope it doesn't happen to you. Dr. Qian is a real, caring Doctor. For his staff, they do not return phone calls, take messages, or understand that you have to call in an appointment for a CT scan to get it done and not the patient call in and then the office orders the procedure.(????) Where does he get these people?????
They seem to care about how I'm doing, asking me about how my pain is & how it's affecting my life. I don't like how all the doctors are scared right now, about losing their licenses over any little thing (ALL doctors are experiencing this in some form or another) sometimes I feel like it's hindering the actual care I receive because they're having to always look over their shoulders & making sure they're following "Protocol". Hopefully things will get better, almost like it was before. Thank you Dr. Chang ???? ???? ???? They seem to care about how I'm doing, asking me about how my pain is & how it's affecting my life. I was very disappointed with Dr. John Qian, MD as well as staff. They do not call to remind for appointments, nor do they return calls. Wait times to see the doctor has consistently been greater than an hour, followed with rushed visits. On my first visit, which was less than 5 minutes, he took no notes. I've even experienced where his verbal recommendations to me made no sense and after questioning him, it became obvious to me he was reading someone else's records.

I have been seeing Dr Qian for several years for chronic pain issues for a couple different ailments. He is the best for finding the source and alleviating pain. He is a get to the point doctor, dry sense of humor, skilled advocste of pain relief.
Hires incompetent personnel that answers the phone, can't send orders to MRI office. Than wants you to find MRI fax number to send orders. Dr. Qian you really need to hire competent personnel, instead of having your patients do their job for you. Jeffrey Romeo
I have been seeing Dr. Qian for several years and his office staff only gets worse. He was firing everyone every month there for awhile. His newest Receptionist is rude, unapologetic and lacks compassion. They never return calls, so if you ever get a return call, consider yourself privileged. Dr. Qian doesn't care what my problems are, he just wants to give me meds. He always says "get injections". He runs his office like a cattle call...move em in, move em out.

I was referred to Dr. Qian 2 months ago and since that time I have been trying to get scheduled but they do not answer their phone at all, I sewear I left 5 voice messages asking them to get back to me and they never did. Finally today someone answered ... she was so rude when I asked her why you do not get back to me as I left too many messages... she almost screamed and was not professional... I will never go to him. He should know understand that he is lossing patients because of bad staff
He is very cold and sarcastic and imtimidating.
Dr Qian is an excellent listener. He is my husband's doctor and we are happy with the level of care and professionalism at his practice. Particularly like the efficiency of his office staff in scheduling the follow-up appointments before leaving. His pain management contract is completely reasonable and self-explanatory. Bottom line, if you follow the rules and are honest and upfront about your health habits between appointments, the doctor-patient relationship will be rewarding.
This doctor treated me for almost a year and when my conditions turned worse, they discharged me from their care under false assumptions without ever consulting with my other doctors and acknowledging hospital reports, nor my own report of pain. When I broke down and told the doctor that my life was getting difficult to get through, day by day, he assumed it as a suicide threat, reduced my medication and literally kicked me out of his office. I didn't even ask to increase my medication.
The most unprofessionally run office I've ever experienced! They never answer their phone, they say they'll submit something for approval but won't, they'll set up an apt to do a procedure (have you get the day off from work as well as your driver) then unapologetically say you're not on their schedule. It's shocking how little they care for their patients! Go anywhere else but here!

Referred to Dr. Qian by my PCP. Spoke with his admin assistant who asked that my primary send over copies of my medical records so the doctor could review my history before seeing me. All good so far. Then suddenly Qian received a huge amount of referrals as a result of new rules limiting prescription writing of controlled substances to pain mgmt specialists. Consequently, his staff will call me back in 2-3 months to schedule me in another 2_-3 months! NOT ACCEPTABLE! Staff says he sees 100/day!

I would recommend Dr. Qian (pronounced chain) to others. Dr. Qian is knowledgeable, experienced, and has a very warm demeanor. He is top notch giving injections and vigilant in prescribing proper meds. His current office staff (2016) is very good as well, however they are very busy and (IMHO) could use 2 more staff members to answer questions and return calls. One caveat; waiting room times are lengthy due to rapid growth in his practice at new location. Bring a book for appt..
