John Hume Lucas IV

Dr. Lucas is a very sweet man so I hate to leave this review but I feel that he thought that I was making my illness up and at the last appointment he seemed annoyed that I was complaining about what I assumed was very bad neuropathy in my legs. It turns out I didn't have neuropathy at all and at the end of the visit he said "congrats your legs are better" and that was it. The pain in my legs was so bad plus I had very bad balance issues and more. I sold my house in SC and moved north because I felt I couldn't take care of the house by myself anymore. Within a few months of living in MA I had an MRI of my spine and it turns out I HAVE Primary Progressive MS!. I saw the DR for 2 years and he never ordered a spine MRI, only brain. I have lesions on my spine that were very clear it's MS. I have been referred to an MS specialist in Boston. I am so upset because if the DR had correctly diagnosed me earlier I may have been able to get on a treatment plan and get better and keep my beautiful new house in SC.

I would love to give this a 5 because Dr.Lucas is a great Doctor but I have had a bad experience with the office and Prior Authorizations. I take 2 medications that need Prior Authorization by my insurance company. I called on March 6th to get a new Authorization on my meds. A week before I needed them..After calling yesterday March 14th the Authorization still wasn't called over. It is now March 15th and just now waiting for it to get it approved. After asking for emergency approval which still may take 24hrs. Again Dr. Lucas great Doctor. Authorization Dept needs work.

Dr Lucas and staff are amazing. He is the fourth neurologist I’ve seen for ‘chronic migraines’ that were ‘treatment resistant.’ Dr Lucas correctly diagnosed me with trigeminal neuralgia and got me on the correct treatment. He has the best bedside manner I’ve ever encountered. Dr Lucas is so compassionate and kind. I’ve seen other reviews stating they have had problems with scheduling. This has NEVER happened to me. I’ve always been seen promptly and have never felt rushed through my appointments.

Dr. Lucas is a very nice man but unfortunately was unable to determine the cause of balance issues and pain in my legs. These issues got gradually worse and I ended up having to move to MA to live with my 83 year old Mom because I could not take care of myself anymore. I could barely walk. After being in MA for just 6 months it was determined that I had Primary Progressive MS and the neuro there didn't understand how it wasn't seen by my previous doctors. If this had been found sooner (when I first started going to him) I may not be as bad as I am now. I am currently using a walker and a cane at 57 years old.

Dr. Lucas has been treating me for over 25 yrs. He is a wonderful physician because he listens, he explains in detail when asked questions. His office is handled very professionally and I highly recommend him if you are looking for a Neurologist.....

Had a visit with Dr. Lucas today. Extremely nice doctor.

Office staff mismanaging patient appointments. Laughing and fist bumping as I was leaving. My wife had appointment for May 19. My wife called today and was informed appt was tomorrow May 19. This afternoon office staff stated appt was today May18, that they could not reschedule for weeks if not months. I find Dr Lucas as well as Palmetto Primary at fault without alerting Dr or Nurse of circumstance. I told staff my wife was at emergency yesterday and was told a “lot of people are sick”. She is very Ill with memory issues. Shaking hands, shaking tongue and chin. Further her balance is poor and she fainted in last weeks. I will file a grievance with medical board against Dr Lucas for not fulfilling his medical as well as ethical practices. No nurse or doctor was available to review this matter. I love Dr. Lucas, HOWEVER, I have had MULTIPLE issues with scheduling!!!! First I saw him at his previous office, one day went to go to my appt, AND how I found out they got a new office was due to his office no longer being there!!!!! Literally was not notified he was moving locations. One day they scheduled an appt for me for a day they weren’t even open!! I went to the office to find this one out!! Lastly they have messed up my appointment time two times now and will not see me the same day. Not to mention they’re literally out in the boondocks and it’s an inconvenience and out of they way. HAVING MIGRAINES IS ALRIGHTY A NIGHTMARE, trying to be treated for them by his practice adds to the nightmare!!! Dr. Lucas is a conscientious and well experienced Neurologist who makes it a point to listen to his patients and thoroughly analyze their concerns and needs. Charleston Neurology merits high recommendation!

Dr. Lucas may be a decent neurologist, but I’m done waiting to find out. Let me tell you about my experience and why you may want to schedule elsewhere. When I arrived at his office for my first appointment in July 2020, during the COVID pandemic, I was shocked and dismayed that the scheduling practices had not taken COVID into account at all. They had scheduled too many appointments for the same time of day and there we sat in his tiny reception area, shoulder to shoulder. I was about to leave right then and there. No office should be scheduling people to arrive en masse for appointments if they cannot seat you a minimum of 6 feet apart. My daughter urged me to stay because she didn’t want to delay a diagnosis any longer than we had to. I stayed. We met him and liked him - a lot. I was hopeful that his plan to order a prolonged EEG would provide answers. The office was supposed to order the test and get back to me. When I hadn’t heard anything in 3 days, I called and left a message. No one called me back. I waited two weeks and called and left another message. Still no one called me back. I finally called and made a virtual appointment with him so that I could tell him how negligent his staff was being. I finally had that virtual appointment on September 15th. I had spent the entire day prior in the ER, after probably having suffered another seizure. I was scared and concerned that it had been almost 7 weeks of waiting for this test and I hadn’t even been scheduled yet. He indicated that they were having difficulty getting my insurance to cover the prolonged EEG and suggested that he call down to MUSC and see if I could be seen there. Now, after waiting another THIRTEEN DAYS, his office just called to relay the exact information we discussed during our appointment on September 15th. There has been no movement at all! My first appointment with him was on July 30th. It is now September 28th. I still have no answers. I don’t feel like Dr. Lucas or his staff care about their patients. What is happening to me is frightening. I should feel as if my healthcare team shares my sense of urgency in finding a diagnosis. I will not be returning and urge you to seek help elsewhere. UPDATE done 10/6/2020 - I received a letter dated September 17th from my insurance company approving the prolonged EEG. Out of curiosity I contacted them to see when they initially received a request for these services. They received it on September 16th!!!! REMINDER - he told me that he would order it in JULY - He further told me they were going "round and round" with my insurance company about covering it - LIES! ALL LIES! If you care about your health or your loved ones health, find another neurologist NOW! It may be that his staff is the problem and they didn't do their jobs, but you really don't want to take that chance, do you? Dr. Lucas may be a decent neurologist, but I’m done waiting to find out. Dr. Lucas is kind, warm, compassionate and genuinely looks out for your best interest. I had a neurologist previous to Dr. Lucas who did very little for me and made me feel as though my issues were not important enough for him to oversee. I have had no issues getting in to see Dr. Lucas, his staff has always been very friendly and I feel with Dr. Lucas by my side I will be able to get my life back. I trust him so much I recommended my mother go see Dr. Lucas!

I have been seeing Dr. Lucas for about 2 years now and he is just a wonderful Doctor. He listens attentively and is interested in what you feel might be going on with your body. I've seen a number of Neurologists over the course of my diagnosis and he is by far my favorite.

I was very impressed had an appointment on Friday. when he walked in room the first thing he wanted to do was tell him about me, not the issues I was going through. After getting to know him, we then focused on the reason for my visit.

What a wonderful experience. Dr Lucas sits and listens to everything you have to say. He is truly concerned about his patients. He is amazing. My dreaded visit turned into a very pleasant experience. Thank you. I would recommend this doctor to anyone.

Dr. Lucas waited late to see my sick wife Donna. He has a wonderful bed side manner. He had sympathy and empathy for her. So kind and caring. He got her a rush MRI and again stayed after hours to read it. The results weren’t good. He called us and told us the hard news so we could be recommended to MUSC. Words here will never be able to express my thanks for this wonderful man. We know now we are fighting brain lymphoma. We can beat it but the road is a hard one. We can be cured.

Absolutely loved Dr Lucus ! Kind,compassionate, common sence! Best dr ive been to about my situation yet ! Thought he was a god send ! ......the department that deals with mri referrals NOT so much ! Nice lady but it should not take a month to get a referral for an mri !!!!! At two wks "she was behind" my insurance co hadn't even been contacted yet. At 3 weeks the referral went through but it was for the wrong imaginging place. Dr Lucus told me to get it done at a specific place as the one i had had done before was to blurry. Was told that that wasnt noted on my chart so the refferal had to be re done ! At going on 4 weeks still hadnt heard anything called was told "the refferral came through and was sent to the imagining place . Call the imaging place . Then Oh no sorry it came through 2 wks a go but sorry we never sent it !!!!!! I Dont think this would have ever gotten done had i not been so persistent !! Now imagining place is booked 2 wks out ! It will be 6 wks since i saw Dr Lucus when i get the mri. Thats alot of paifull days !!! A Dr can only be as good as the people working for him are . I returned from South Korea just to learn Dr. R was no longer in the office. I met with the nurse practioner and explained the hormonal imbalance during my menstruation was a trigger for my seizures. The Dr while I was in Japan and Dr. R both prescribed a higher dose of meds during my week of mentruation (should also have been in my records). I thought the nurse practitioner understood that, but when I went to pick up my RX the additional dose of meds during my mentruation was not showing. The pharmacy contacted Dr. Lucas' office 3 different times, and I called and left a message once, but no changes ever made. This has left me at a lost. Now I use Valerian Root as an additional support as an anti-convulsant and I "steal" a couple of pills from 2-3 days a month I know I am not going anywhere so I can save for my needed week. What is so painful about this review is that I really liked Dr. Lucas. I have a brain tumor and moved from NC where I went to Duke University to see a neuro oncologist, who specifically works with brain tumors. I saw Dr. Lucas after we moved here to regulate and prescribe my seizure meds. Long story short, he and his office refused to submit paperwork to my insurance so that I could see a neuro onc. here in Charleston, because "it takes too much time and it'll get denied anyway."

Dr. Lucas is always kind and compassionate. He makes sure to make me smile while checking me over. He works with me to lessen my pain and discomfort. He saved my life when another doctor was taking me off a medicine too quickly.

First class care from both physician and staff. The one place left on this earth where you will get a human that answers the phone. Very pleased with my care.

Rude and lacks empathy. Truly a one trick pony who should not be a dr. Refuse to retake a painful test and I was told to leave they would not treat me. Lied about the shaking in my legs told it was perfectly normal for a 40 years old.

Dr Lucas has treated my post-op Chiari malformation for over ten years. He is an awesome listener and cares about my quality of life. I would highly recommend him.
