Excellent surgeon. I had to have a second operation (through no fault of his) - and went back to him again.

This was my second spinal fusion with Dr. Ragland. I go into surgery calm in knowing I am in the best hands possible.I trust his judgement and value his opinion.. I feel blessed to have found him. He has given me a new lease on life. I owe him more than I could ever repay.

Dr. Ragland is very personable. He listens, he explains everything so you understand, he gives you options, and he answers your questions. Mostly, he takes time with you and doesn’t rush in and out of your appointment. Excellent doctor.

I was suffering with back and leg pain for the last four years and Dr Ragland made sure I did everything to help with the pain. He never talked about surgery, I went to him and told him that I was ready for surgery.I went to another Dr before Ragland and he suggested surgery before he got to know me.

Dr. Ragland is an very caring and talented surgeon. He and his staff have been amazing every step of the way. I am on my way to recovering completely and I'm really thankful he did my procedure. I highly recommend.

I have been a patient of Dr. Ragland for approximately ten years, and I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone with spinal issues. He has performed four cervical fusions and one lumbar fusion on me, and I could not be happier with his work, expertise, and genuine bedside manner. Dr. Ragland has always taken the time to present me with various surgical and therapeutic options available and specific to my areas of pain. He is an excellent listener and is eager to hear from his patients regarding their particular pain and discomfort associated with their diagnosis. I would not allow any other neurosurgeon to operate on me and have always been most pleased with my surgical outcomes. Dr. Ragland is TOP on my list of competent and professional neurosurgeons!

Dr. Ragland performed my anterior cervical fusion at C5 - C7 in April, 2010. I woke up pain free after suffering for nine months. He saved my career at the time. He also spent over an hour explaining the procedure and answering my questions ahead of time. What doctor spends that much time with a new patient? His interpersonal skills are top shelf. Following the surgery, he advised all went well but that sometimes a person may need another fusion. Now, after 11 years of being pain-free, the issue has returned. This time at C3 - C5. Now I live two states away but will give serious thought to going back to him. Very highly recommend him.

I don't understand how Dr Ragland has 5 stars.. I had a MRI on my back and my family doctor referred me to him for a second opinion on my findings, Just found out today he denied me as a patient!! What kind of doctor does that?? It's not about the insurance, because he takes my insurance!! I sure wouldn't recommend him!! Honesty, he doesn't even deserve one star! Dr.Boulos did my surgery then left for Delaware. Dr Boulos said if have any problems anyone group would help me. Made appt with Dr.Ragland he came in l explained my issues since surgery,he said "l don't know what to tell you". He walked out of the room sent his assistant into give me a prescription. I ask her what's going on is he not coming back she said,"No". Who leaves a patient like that?

Excellent neurosurgeon, good bedside manners. Listens to his patients and discusses alternatives. Good bedside manners. His staff is wonderful! I feel so much better after the surgery! Most grateful!

I definitely would recommend Dr. Ragland. He is not one to rush into surgery. After about a year, he made new Xrays and my situation was now viable for surgery. He did not make any guarantees but I trusted his skill and knew he would certainly perform to his best ability. It has been about 5 months and even though it cannot be perfect at my senior age, I definitely have benefited!! I can tell the difference from less pain and more mobility in my neck. The best neurosurgeon, he cares about his patients and makes the whole process great.

Two years ago today Dr. Ragland performed back surgery for me and it has made such a huge difference in my life. At the time of my surgery my pain level was about an 8 or 9 and I had to stop exercising completing. I wondered if I would ever be able to resume my regular exercise routine, as I doubted I would ever be well enough again. I am now running between 25-30 miles per week. Back surgery x3. In severe pain each time. Dr Ragland was always quick to respond to my needs and see me expeditiously. Calming personality.

Dr. Ragland has had to perform several surgeries on my VP shunt, which I had to have inserted a number of years ago due to complications from tumor removals (in another city). He has always been patient and kind with me. He treats me with utmost respect, and he is at the top of his game as far as his knowledge level goes. I would love to thank him personally for having improved my health status and for having taken such good care of me when I was definitely not “at my best.” This doctor also has a great knack for dealing with the families of patients. My daughter has been precious to me and has seen me through quite a lot. Dr. Ragland recognizes the parts that family members have to play in caring for seriously ill patients and guides them with his best, most honest suggestions. I am a nurse. Health care can be hard sometimes at best. I would recommend Dr. Ragland for anyone’s neurosurgical needs. He is tops in his field!

Dr. Ragland has done two back surgeries on my and one neck surgery on my wife. We both are doing great and it’s been a few years for me. Very informative and gives you options. Highly recommend him if your in pain.

I am a dentist with my practice in Oak Ridge. 25 days ago I awoke to numbness in the last to fingers of my right hand and unbearable pain from my neck running down my arm. A bodybuilder friend of mine who has had three surgeries by Dr Joel Ragland highly recommended him. I was very pleased with my consultation with him. He sat down with me for 45 minutes and went over my MRI, one vertebra at a time. He then discussed surgical treatment and associated risks of the surgery. I then scheduled with him on his first available appointment. Today Dr Ragland did a C7-T1 fusion and correction of my damaged discs. I went from pain that was career ending as well as quality of life ending to awaking in recovery PAIN FREE. The incision in my neck is unbelievably small and surgery site pain is minimal. I cannot praise his surgical skill and compassion for what I was going through enough. He has saved my career and my quality of life. I highly recommend Dr Ragland and I could not be happier.

Dr Joel ragland was wonderful! He was genuinely concerned with my outcome on life. He actually cares about his patients and their futures. He helped give me my life back! One year ago today I had a second Chiari surgery performed by Dr Joel Ragland I would give him 100 stars if possible. He is an amazing doctor he is knowledgeable and very caring. He listens to you and figures out what is best for you as a patient. His assistant Nancy is awesome as well and all the office staff. I know God had a hand in bringing me to him. I had a disc replacement surgery yesterday..first surgery I’ve ever had. Dr. Ragland is hands down the best. He was very patient with me and my family. He was highly recommended and I would trust him to do surgery on me again or my family members .. his staff is amazing too especially Karen who went above and beyond by taking g time after her work hours to handle an issue with my insurance. I had a lumbar Diskectomy yesterday 10/12/18 L5s1 and I feel like I have my life back. After 10 months of conservative treatment 3 Chiropractors 1 Orthopedic with 3 epidural injections and one cadul block and 6 weeks of physical therapy. I finally give in and said enough Is enough and the last 5 days before surgery i was bed ridden. I had my surgery at Parkwest it was a piece of cake everyone is so caring. Dr Ragland is the nicest Dr I've ever met. I came home pain free and don't need pain meds.

They got me in when every other neurosurgeon couldn't fit me in for two more weeks. They spent two days fighting with Tricare to get an emergency disk replacement. I had been to the emergency room 3 times that week, had a nerve literally crushed in C5 and in pain that I wouldn't wish upon my sist enemy. He came in on Saturday morning and did the surgery. I'm beyond thankful for his expertise, compassion and swiftness.

Dr. Ragland is one of the few doctors that will talk with you an explan everytime. We talked about my options for more than an hour. If can can help you he will, if he can’t he will tell you so.

The staff of Dr. Raglands office are the best. Dr. Ragland is not only a great surgeon but he talks to you like a friend you have known for years. Dr. Ragland is an amazing doctor! He listened to me and was up front about surgery and what to expect. The process was smooth and easy and he was amazing. I have my life back thanks to him. I HIGHLY recommend!

He was very honest and sympathetic regarding my condition and diagnosis but said there were other neurosurgeons that were a better choice for the surgery I need and he wouldn't operate on me. I thank God I had an appointment with my 1st choice the next day. I told Dr. Ragland the other surgeon's name and he highly recommended him so that was a plus. I wonder what type surgeries he does perform because the other surgeon didn't hesitate. I do appreciate Dr. Ragland's honesty.

As instructed, I took the disk of my MRI and X-ray with me for this first visit concerning my neck. Dr. Ragland spend 45 minutes with me, going over and explaining the problems with every disc and my spinal cord. He explains everything in simple language and he took his time. I am totally pleased with Dr. Ragland.

I had a spinal fusion done, by Dr. Ragland, in 2012. I thought I had given a review, long before now. I decided to go ahead and follow up here, because recently, I have had many people asking me who performed my surgery, as they are now having some back issues of their own. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Ragland to anyone needing this type of surgery. He is extremely honest in what needs or does NOT need to be done and will kindly, and patiently give all your options and answer all questions.

The wait time on my first visit was 4 hours. Then I was sent for an MRI when I had just had one. My pain was and remains a 10+. My second visit the doctor met with me and basically said there was nothing he could do for me. Goodbye - end of story. I left in tears feeling totally hopeless. I am just stunned that a doctor would be so cruel.

Dr. Ragland is a thorough and patient physician. My husband has a herniated disc that is pressing on his nerve base. We went to see Dr. Ragland and he spent over an hour with us explaining our options. Never have I been to a physician's office and had the actual physician spend as much time answering all our questions and being as straight forward with us as this man. I would definitely recommend him to any patient looking for a neurosurgeon.
