Dr. Joel Bruce Dragelin

Dr Dragelin is the best he saved my life with an emergency surgery rendering the best possible outcome with that surgery. I felt compelled to leave this 5 star rating and highest recommendation after seeing negative reviews on his bedside manner and rating him as mean and a bully well thats all a big pile of bs. This man is a medical artist a paragon of a physician. Great bedside manner very compassionate the opposite of a bully. What i did see in the other reviews that accord with my experience is the phrase he saved my life. I myself declare this with the utmost gratitude thank God for having Dr. Dragelin on duty when i needed that emergency surgery and God bless him. This man is a great human not just a great doctor he is full of compassion and caring. EvenIf he had a bad day and whatever you would not choose him based on you perceiving him as being mean to you seeing he must have saved many lives but you would prefer a nicer guy with less skills toast for brains are my thoughts .

My surgery with Dr. Dragelin was 15 years ago but switching oncologists and finding myself digging up names/dates led me here and I really felt I needed to comment on the negative bedside manner reviews. My ex-h and I jokingly always referred to Dr. Dragelin as "Dr. Doom". We learned quickly that he was going to give us the facts without fluff. It's hard to take but in the end, I didn't choose him for his delivery. I chose him for his skill at cutting out my cancer and at that, he is expert and that's all that matters. Yes, I had chemo, but I'm still here today because of the incredible surgery Dr. Dragelin performed on me. I moved across the country 10 years ago, but if, heaven forbid, I ever need another surgery, I would without question, fly back to Raleigh to let him cut me open. I also went into my first meeting with him terrified - and with a list of 3 oncologists and plastic surgeons. I asked his advice and he said for my personality - these particular 2 - and he couldn't have been more accurate. So, for those who need a fluffy teddy bear BFF as your surgeon, I guess you should look elsewhere and good luck to you, but you'd be better off getting the touchy-feelies from friends and family and put your trust in Dr. Dragelin's skill with the really important stuff. Rudest bedside manner ever - should not be permitted to interact with patients or their families. He presents as crass and completely lacks compassion in situations where that would go a long way. I'm sorry that my parent had to be subjected to him. I pray that his loved ones will never be on the receiving end of the kind of treatment he renders. This man was a complete and total bully. Very rude and completely unprofessional. After experiencing his behavior, and total disregard for what you are facing, I would strongly advise you to find another doctor! He doesn't try to reassure you or help you feel at ease about what you are facing. I've never met a doctor who is so out of touch with his patient on a mental level. When you are facing a procedure or surgery, feeling good about the doctor and putting your trust in him, MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!!!! After my encounter with him, I would never let him operate on me! When I tried to talk with him about my concerns he walks over to the door and said "I need to deal with this before it's midnight". He acted as if I was taking up his time, and my feelings or concerns wasn't his problem. I felt so belittled by his behavior, I still haven't forgotten how he made me feel. If dealing with patients have become a burden, and he can't just stop and listen to the patient about their concerns, it's time to retire. The way he raised his voice and responded to me was very alarming. To be honest, I don't think he really cared if the procedure was done. My impression was, he would walk out of the room and never think about it or care about the outcome. He could have cared less. Myrna Catherine Horne Dr. Dragelin has performed three surgeries for me. He is great! I would recommend him to my family and friends. He is caring, professional, skillful and knowledgeable. I am very confident in him.

I highly recommend this group of doctors. Dr. Dragelin has done two surgeries for me. He was/is amazing. He is caring, sensitive to your needs, listens to your concerns and makes sure your comfortable with everything through the whole process. I could not have asked for a better surgeon. I had to have emergency surgery for a perforation of my large intestine which caused me to become septic. Previous to the surgery, I was in the hospital trying to treat the condition with antibiotics which did not work. As my condition decline, Dr. D made a decision for surgery which I am convinced saved my life! I like his straight forward approach. He is a skilled surgeon & I would highly recommend him. I almost died & because of Dr D I am still a husband & father!! Thank you.

You come into my room at Rex for a consultant and MEAN is the only word I can think of to describe your behavior. What is wrong with you? You are an adult and a doctor. Dr. Dragelin was my surgeon for an emergency gallbladder removal surgery with complications. He talked with me before surgery in my room, in preop and the day after surgery. He gave me detailed information, even drawing a diagram on a sheet of paper so I could clearly understand and see what he encountered during my surgery. He is exceptionally kind. I also saw him for my follow-up. Great bedside manner and very thorough. I am truly grateful for him. He is very good at what he does.

Plain and simple Joel save my life. I'm not one that usually comments on these sites but after reading the comments from the ER patient from February 2016 I felt I should express my experiences with Dr. Dragelin. He has operated on me more than once and I'm quite convinced is a reason that I'm still alive. He has earned a place on my list of people I trust my life with which is a very short list .

Wow! What a jerk. His bedside manner is was the worst I have ever seen in 57 years. The PA with him was embarrassed and after the doctor left my room apologized. He came to see me in the ER for a surgery consult. I didn't need surgery but if I had he would be the LAST person who would operate!
