Joan Dahmer

Dr. Dahmer always spoke with my mother in the chemo room, rarely ever a private patient room, for barely one full minute, which made speaking about her condition difficult and uncomfortable. I made hundreds of calls to the nurse navigator over the course of a few months about my mother’s new or worsening symptoms, but Dr. Dahmer never seemed to know what was going on with my mother. Despite my mother asking for a prognosis, Dr. Dahmer never gave her one, or expressed discomfort in giving one, leaving my mother to pass unexpectedly. My mother developed incredibly high heart rates which Dr. Dahmer wrote off as dehydration when it was actually a pleural effusion. Try to see any other oncologist; my mother blindly fought through her diagnosis with little answers and no care from Dr. Dahmer. She was rude, inattentive, and cold.

Today Dr. Dahmer diagnosed me with stage 4 breast cancer with multiple sites of metastasis, a virtual death sentence. Then I overheard her making fun of me twice to other staff members because I refused to have a monthly infusion or give myself shots in the belly to treat slightly worsening bone density. I have metastatic breast cancer - who cares about bone density?? She is far too distracted by issues that do not matter.

Virginia Piper cancer center has the nicest. Most accommodating staff and nurses. Doc Dahmer is the best doctor I have heard of. She is patient. Kind. Incredibly smart. Very thorough. I just love her. You wont be disappointed with her.

Dr. Dahmer is the best of the best. She is so knowledgeable about so many areas of medicine. She is extremely accurate. I would choose no other.

Doctor Dahmer is somewhat distant when treating her patients. However I attributed this lack of cordiality to intensity. She is EXTREMELY skilled diagnosticslly. If you do not want experience, grey hair, been there-done that thought process go find a snow flake. Bedside manner is highly over rated. I will take quick honesty over a smile and a pat on the arm any day of the week. Straight forward, hard to swallow, direct and we'll formulated diagnosis WITH prognosis generated paths to healing is what you get. Seriously - the people who left less than 4 or 5 stars must have gone to a different doctor. My husband, who had an uncommon blood disorder, was treated by her and now I am her patient. She is professional, kind, clear in her explanation, matter-of-fact, and appropriately friendly. I would (and have) recommend her to others. I leave 4 stars; all for Dr. Dahmer. The "missing" one is for the office staff. They seem annoyed with calls & questions and I often wonder why they took the job if they dislike people with long-term illnesses so much.

Dr. Dahmer is smart, kind, and sincere. I had been so ill, even hospitalized, and Dr. Dahmer found the diagnosis fast and treated it. She saved my life because she listened and took action.

Sometimes it's hard to get a straight answer out of her, but let me tell you, she knows her stuff. If you've got a sinus infection, maybe go to another doctor with a gentle bedside manner who won't offend you. But if you've got cancer, get Dr. Dahmer in your corner, because she not only knows what you need, she'll fight like a bear to get it for you. Excellent Dr. and staff.

I found Dr. Dahmer inaccessible, condescending, & dismissive. Expect a frosty shoulder to lean on. And forget about return calls or messages on your patient portal. My first & hopefully last experience with such a doctor.
