Dr. Gurley is an excellent surgeon. He is caring and very devoted to his patients.

About 10 yrs ago, Dr Gurley diagnosed me with lumbar spinal stenosis, he was up-front about the degree of stenosis and said it was significant enough that in the future I may need surgery. He proceeded to tell me that we wouldn't even talk about surgery until we tried everything else and told me to get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. I got a 2nd opinion with a Dr who agreed with Dr Gurley's diagnosis and the significance of the stenosis but was ready to do surgery that day! Needless to say, I went back to Dr Gurley, he sent me to pain management and I was able to put surgery off for another 6 years! I had a laminectomy and fusion of L 4-5 a month ago and although I'm still recovering, it was the best decision I've ever made. Also, the surgery had to be canceled twice due to the covid issues in the hospital, Dr Gurley called me himself both times to cancel because he knew I would be devastated and he wanted to be the one to speak with me and explain the dangers of recovering from such a big surgery with Covid risks. I wish I could personally talk to anyone who is even considering spinal surgery, there is NO ONE else I would let touch my spine! Just saw Dr. Gurley recently and remain impressed with his vast depth of knowledge and compassion for those he serves. I'm 10+ years post multi-level lumbar fusion, and if I had to do it all over again, I would not change a thing. There is only one choice for me for spinal care needs in future - thanks Dr. Gurley and staff!

I found Dr. Gurley to be open and honest with a good sense of humor. He explained my back issues clearly and gave me other options before jumping into surgery. At each visit, he patiently answered my questions and even encouraged me to seek a second opinion. He educated and prepared me for the type of surgery I would have (laminectomy/lumbar fusion), what to expect and what my recovery would look like. Following surgery, while in the hospital, he visited me each day, if not twice a day. I found him to be compassionate and an advocate for me as his patient. In all of my interactions with his office staff, they have been helpful, efficient and professional. I'm grateful for Dr. Gurley and highly recommend him.

I would not recommend Dr. Gurley. He cancelled my wife's surgery minutes before her operation because he had some panic attack at the last minute and said all of a sudden that she was too high risk and too much liability. She was all hooked up to IV, and electrodes all over and just waiting for him to start. For months before that, he had her take all sorts of expensive tests and buy a 4000.00 brace that we were not able to get reimbursed by my insurance because it was so unusual. I am still paying for all of the expenses of a surgery that he cancelled minutes before the operation. He is unstable. I would not recommend Dr. Gurley. My adult son is a patient of Dr. Gurley. We owe my son's back surgery success to Dr. Gurley's amazing intuition and surgery skills. I say intuition because on the day of the scheduled surgery, our son was ready to be wheeled to surgery and Dr. Gurley asked about his conditions. My son said his leg was feeling a bit numb. Dr. Gurley thought he was joking and since he wasn't joking the surgery was cancelled until Dr. Gurley could find out why our son had a new symptom. We were disappointed that the surgery was cancelled but after further review, Dr. Gurley realized that had he performed the planned surgery, our son would have likely needed a 2nd surgery at some point in his life resulting in a lower success rate. We will be FOREVER GRATEFUL that Dr. Gurley was sooo amazing in his skills that our son is now able to do what every 31 year old should be able to do! Dr. Gurly and his team are amazing !!! He just did a fushion surgery on my husband's L5,L4 and S1. My husband had an immediate relief after 15 years of suffering in pain. Just got home from the Back Surgeon after having my MRI yesterday. It’s amazing what the human body can do (well with a couple nerve blocks!). The MRI showed the nerve openings much clearer and open then the one in February. So because of the eye infection I had during the first attempt at surgery, it postponed the operation a week which saved me from having an unnecessary surgery. Kudos to Dr. Gurley at Southwest for not just doing the surgery to make a quick buck! I cannot recommend him enough! Thanks to everyone for their good thoughts and prayers! I have literally been at the gym almost every day since I was prepped and ready to be rolled into surgery and feel pretty damn good! Saw Dr. Gurley back in 2015 for spinal fusion surgery. Seeing him was the decision that changed my life for the better. He is extremely intelligent and compassionate, a combination rarely seen in surgeons. He was honest with me from day one, telling me that it may even take several years to experience the full benefits of fusion. He is an outstanding surgeon, straight forward, truthful, and is one of the communicators when it comes to discussing your spine issues. Awesome surgeon! After years of lower back pain, to the point I could no longer endure, I finally had the courage to schedule an appt. After meeting with 3 different back surgeons I was convinced Dr. Gurley was the one. He made me feel comfortable when talking, took his time and answered all my questions. He didn’t talk surgery right away. We started with a few other options, which unfortunately did not work for me. After having my lower back surgery I was able to walk with no pain. Recovery was long, but do as your told and it goes quickly. I am years out and still doing great!!

He might be an accomplished doctor and a good surgeon, but has little sympathy for someone seeking advice, whose been in pain for 30 years with documentation and a severe diagnosis. Which is sad since he also makes disability determinations for whichever agency might ask him.

Dr. Gurley is a life saver. He is very kind and down to earth. He also explains things in a way you can understand easily. His staff is really great as well. I have a congenitall cervical fusion defect c2-c4 called Klippel Feil syndrome. I had numerous x-rays over the years and nobody found it until Dr. Gurley. This defect caused herniated discs c4-5, c5-6, c6-7. I had an ACDF of c4-6 almost 2 yrs ago. Prior to my surgery I had headaches so severe that I couldn't get off of the couch. I also had numbness and tingling in both my arms,elbow to hand. I was constantly dropping things. I was absolutely miserable. I felt better immediately after my surgery! I also wanted to say WEAR YOUR BRACE. It is crucial to your recovery! I feel like a brand new person thanks to Dr. Gurley. If I could give him and his staff 10 stars I would! There are no words to describe how very fortunate that I feel to have been referred to Dr. Gurley. I dealt with several back issues over the course of 10+ years. I tried just about every treatment available to avoid surgery. In July 2019 it became apparent that it was time to consider a lumbar fusion, something that filled me with dread. After a consultation with another surgeon, I was not impressed. The original surgeon recommended that I get a second opinion with Dr. Gurley. I called his office. The nurse/receptionist listened to me and genuinely showed concern. She scheduled an appointment within 2 weeks. When I went to my appointment I was impressed at how professional the women at the front desk were, especially Morisset(?). Dr. Gurley spent a lot of time with me. He thoroughly explained the results of my MRI. He even noticed something that went undetected by the original surgeon. Dr. Gurley explained what a lumbar fusion was & how it would help. He also provided a lengthy written explanation of the risks. I had to initial every page acknowledging that I read it. I was able to make an educated decision to get the surgery done. The staff is amazing. Dr. Gurley is the upmost best surgeon to have. He is so willing to try everything possible to fix the issue first instead of jumping right into surgery. I have had two different neck surgery's 6&7 back in 2014 and also the 4&5 in 2020. Thank you Dr. Gurley for everything you have done for me.

Dr.Gurly is great but ... but I highly recommend someone to tell his office to be A LITTLE MORE FRIENDLY. We as patients understand Dr.Gurly is busy, but when a patient has waited MONTHS for an appt. and needs to reschedule then as office staff, you should find a sooner time slot or call us if any cancelations occur to get us in quicker. Have a little more respect on the patients end when we hurt and have to wait 3 months to be seen. Dr. Gurley and his staff are extremely friendly and caring. Dr. Gurley performed a spinal fusion on me when I was 21 years old and could hardly walk due to the pain I was in. Now, a year and a half later, I am free of pain and without restrictions on activities. I highly recommend Dr. Gurley.

I started with Dr. Gurley about 10 years ago after herniating my L5/S1 disc during a volleyball tournament. I had played semi-pro vball for 20 years prior to this. The normal protocol with therapy and injections didn't suffice at this time. The back spasms and pain/numbness down my right leg was debilitating. He performed an L5/S1 laminectomy/micro-discectomy and I literally walked out of the hospital pain free and back to competing much quicker than expected. A couple of years later I herniated the L5/S1 disc again while lifting and twisting with heavy logs in the yard. Once again I went through the normal protocol of injections etc. but the symptoms were too bad to carry on normal activity and my right calf was atrophying quickly. I was literally driving with my left leg only for weeks. We both knew in the long run a fusion would be the ultimate solution but I wanted to put it off as long as possible. I'm a very active person in the gym every day and an avid mountain biker. I had it in my head that a fusion would be the end of everything active for me. He performed a second micro-discectomy and once again, I walked away pain free. My right calf recovered and I was back to my normal regimen within a couple weeks. Fast forward a few years and I started getting a lot of back spasms. Most of my pain was dead center of the back between S1/L4. I did have symptoms down the legs if I exercised too hard or had any impact such as running or jumping. Dr. Gurley performed a therapeutic discogram to determine if the disc was the pain source. Sure enough, aside from being one of the more painful tests I could imagine, it did prove that the disc was the source of pain. He injected what I assume was cortisone in the disc during the procedure, and to my surprise, I had instant relief of the back spasms within 24 hours. This lasted for 5 months! The pain came back and he agreed to perform these therapeutic discograms on levels L5/S1 and L4/L5 every 6 months. These worked like a charm for 5 years!!! Finally they stopped working and my back spasms became so bad that I could not trust myself to even drive because I was not sure when they would happen. My right leg was burning down the sciatic nerve and my right foot was so numb it was difficult to even feel if I was striking the ground correctly when walking. I talked with Dr. Gurley and with my level of activity we agreed together that an Anterior and Posterior fusion from S1 to L4 would be the best solution. The gold standard solid fusion. I had this procedure in May of 2018 and I am now 6 months out now and fully recovered. In fact, I was walking up to a mile a day within 1 week and 3 miles a day within 2 weeks. My recovery was probably much much faster than average because I am very active and stubborn when it comes to therapy rules. So… this is a long story I know. Dr. Gurley not only prolonged my need for the fusion for as much as 10 years after my first incident but he was very understanding in my desires to put the fusion off for so long. I cannot put into words how much he has helped me. His staff is wonderful and friendly. In fact, I could easily just hang out with them all day after a visit if they weren't busy with other patients. I have several friends including my wife that have very similar stories. My wife had instant relief from an L5/S1 micro-discectomy with Dr. Gurley about 8 years ago after she herniated her L5/S1 disc as well. She is still doing great. I cannot believe anyone would give less than 5 stars for a review. Hint: if somebody does give less than 5 stars, read their other reviews and you can quickly learn more about their view of the world. LOL Thank you DR. I raked leaves this week! For most people this is a mundane activity. For me, its a miracle! I had a laminectomy and a fusion a year ago. At that time, I could barely function. I had difficulty standing, walking or sitting for any period of time. At night, I would often sit up in a recliner because of the discomfort. My general doctor sent me to pain management doctors that accused me of being drug seeking. Dr. Gurley was the first to actually order an MRI to assess the damage. He carefully explained the films that showed extreme stenosis and a curved spine. He was kind and patient with my anxiety about the surgery and attentive during my recovery. I recently had surgery by Dr. Gurley on my L5-S1 area. Before surgery he was very thorough when explaining the procedure. He's an amazing surgeon who has a great bed side manner! Dr. Jerold Gurley is AMAZING! My husband had a back surgery 20 years ago after a fall while at work. The surgeon he had did more damage that was not known for awhile. He had horrible nerve damage too. My husband was disabled from it and could not go back to work. Needless to say he went through pain pumps, nerve blocks and meds that would change his personality for worse. Needless to say we decided to have another surgeon look at him when all else failed. He could not live this way. That's when we started to do some research to find another surgeon to take a look at him. I was very reluctant to have him go through another surgery but realized we had no choice. That's when we found Dr. Gurley. After countless tests and appointments we were finally told that Dr. Gurley might be able to help him. I liked him from the start, down to earth and told you exactly what needed to be done in terms you totally understood. We finally had hope but no real guarantee. Needless to say he did the surgery this past February and my husband is doing things I thought he would never be able to do. Its only been 11 months and our future looks so bright. I have been seeing Dr. Gurley for the past 10 years, I tell everyone he saved my life. He told me I needed surgery but only when it was on my time. Dr. Gurley is the best spinal physician in the greater Cleveland area. I have been seeing him for lower back pain. He is not only extremely competent, knowledgeable, technical, and thorough, he is also compassionate and helps the patient through the process of dealing with debilitating back pain with care and emphathy. He will sit down with you and go over all of your options and will guide you to the best one, not just for your immediate issue, but for your long term health. Great physician, very personable. I highly recommend him and his staff. They're always friendly and helpful. I've been to other spine doctors and centers in the Cleveland and Akron area and they did zero to help. I began with Dr. Gurley as a second opinion. After our first appointment I realized this would be my first choice for my physician due to his understanding of my condition, but more importantly his ability to ease my mind regardless of the potential risks involved. He provided me a complete understanding of the process, procedure and the rehabilitation the surgery would require. He was also cognizant of my worry related to age and assured me all would be okay while still being thorough in his explaination of the risks. Surgery was completed on January 22nd and went as smoothly as he said it would. His follow up over the next few days was something that I had never experienced before. Both the doctor and his staff continued to monitor my condition, making me feel as if I was their only patient. After 7 days I was able to ascend 14 stairs through my rehabilitation (therapy), as well as utilize a walker and cane to move about. When I was 15 years old I was diagnosed with a herniated disc (L4-L5). Dr. Gurley was the most optimistic surgeon and made me comfortable with him from the beginning. Dr. Gurley performed a microdiscectomy and pain was eliminated immediately. I was cleared for military duty and completed a 6 year term and now I'm 30 years old without any problems. My nephew had spinal surgery almost two years ago Dr. Gurley performed the operation. He is an excellent surgeon and provides a realistic assessment of the possible outcomes. Dr. Gurley's professional manner and demeanor as well as his competence and expertise made him our logical choice after consulting and researching other surgeons. He spent over an hour reviewing MRI and showing us where the issues were in my spine, my short term concerns and long term concerns and care for my spine. Literally saved my life. My back was awful, and Dr. Gurley performed extensive, multi-level fusion surgery ~5 years ago. Goal was 20% pain improvement (my back was bad). I am now 98% pain improved. I was depressed and hopeless before surgery - back pain is real and debilitating on many levels. Dr. Gurley pushed surgery off as long as possible. He cared a lot about my family and how they would cope with my post-surgery plight. My advice? Trust him with your life - I did. Not a single regret!

Very talented and thorough Doctor with a great personality. Surgery was smooth, went well and minimal if any scaring. I was lucky to find him and able to use his unique talents.

Terrible wouldn't recommend him.
