Dr. Jay Dennis Tarnow

Saw this guy in the 90's. Basically told may parents that I wouldn't amount to anything and the saddest thing is that my mother took his comments to heart and has since treated like a child. He shouldn't be practicing Psychiatry.

Recommendation: DO NOT GO --------------------------------------------------- Read Reviews on the Tarnow Center - all these other reviews are misleading and fake, as another reviewer states - if you want to know how bad this place really is, look up review EVERYWHERE on this guy ---------------------------------------------------- The Tarnow Center costs a lot of money for little to no results. Tarnow himself does not see the patient that he is prescribing medication towards. When I take a step back and look at it, it seems (from my perspective) he kind of uses his patients as test subjects. He does not see the patient, he only reads reports, suggests experimental (non proven) testing, and then guesses different medications he should prescribe. When one does not work he suggests more experimental testing and tries again. The doctor we saw was ok, but the results we saw (for the vast amount of money) was little to none. Given how they don't accept insurance, the entire operation is a money pit for those who go. They often recommend additional testing (not covered by insurance and experimental) that costs thousands of dollars that do not help at all. The therapy worked little to none too. I sat in on a few therapy sessions and it amazed me what little occurred. No wonder why we saw no results. In addition, Tarnow himself is not the nicest guy. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE: In a group meeting with family, he once told the entire family over a phone call that my child most likely is bipolar because I am - the crazy thing is that I am not bipolar nor ever been diagnosed (or even close to being). He does not know my medical history, nor by law should he state someone's medical history without permission. I should have reported him right then and there. When I confronted him about it he tried to make me believe that I told him I was. Due to this we wasted money on several doctors because it scared the family - all the doctors stated that our child was not bipolar. I WANTED Tarnow Center to be as good as Tarnow says it is and I gave it a chance (2 years), but from someone who took the bait, this place is not a place I would recommend. I HIGHLY.... This "doctor" has issues and needs therapy. He lacks empathy and compassion, and for I have read knowledge. Standing on a podium??? hahahah this one needs to work out his issues before giving advise. He should be reported to the Board and sued for malpractice.

I'm not sure where these 5 positive reviews came from. Friends? Did they get paid? Because DR TARNOW IS THE WORST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER KNOWN! And I should know. I have worked with them all my life. Finally someone who has really looked into my son's condition and is helping! We have been looking for a year and a half!

Dr. Jay Tarnow has treated my family for over 20 years. During that time I have met with Dr. Tarnow individually, as a couple, with a child, and in a Group. I have watched him help people and change lives over and over again. I know of no other psychiatrist in Houston who can do what Dr T does. He has cutting edge technology. He is at the forefront of new strategies, diagnostic tools, and meds. He is fully supported by quality staff. If you are able to get an appointment with Dr. Tarnow, don’t miss it. Dr. Tarnow's care changed my life and my family's. I cannot understate this. His diagnosis of my adhd over twenty years ago (then my mom's), his ability to find an unusual but effective treatment through medication (that of course altered over time, as my body physically altered from childhood to adulthood), is extraordinary. My behavior and self-management literally make me unrecognizable from my childhood self... Having been in the education profession, amd observing many students and their families go through troubles similar to what I experienced (but with different outcomes), I see how lucky I was to have the care experience I had. Worth every penny. Also: about Dr Tarnow's tendency to stand at a podium, I've always seen it as quirky rather than paternalistic. He's got a lot of energy-- I can relate!

He seems to think that what he says is the only thing that matters. I think since he does not take insurance he pushes expensive ($3000) test. My real honest opinion is that he is an.....I can’t say that here, and after 4 visits my wife agreed as well as the he pushed test for money.

These folks really care. My son worked with them for 8 years and it was a great process.

I saw Tarnow for over 10 yrs. He was great. It is true, he can be stern at times, but in my instance, it was bc he cared a lot about my outcome. He did stand at a podium but who cares? I also saw a therapist in his practice & she & I had a great, 10 yr relationship. Tarnow also found the correct diagnosis for me & it felt like I crawled out of a hole to see the sun. He does seem a little angry in his emails. Who cares? He does a good job!

I would NEVER refer anyone to this physician. He is extremely unprofessional, and he treated our family with the utmost disrespect on many occasions. First of all, he stands at a podium during your session and he prefers that you sit on a old, low couch-so I guess he feels that he is “superior”. He rarely interacts with the patient he is supposed to be evaluating...he primarily interacts with the parent or parents. He is rude, forgetful, confrontational and plain nasty if you disagree with him.

My husband & children has been going to Tarnow for 20 something years.Their mental health and behaviors keeps declining and getting worst in every sense having Tarnow managing and numbing their lives with pills they ask to be given. Urine Drug test came always "clean", my husb. happy to hear that when in fact son was using fake urine and high on heavy drugs. MONEY and TIME wasted and lives of love ones continuous to deteriorate without proper help. This doctor has customers no patients. Beware.

He's great as long as you don't disagree with him! If you do, he becomes rude and nasty.

My daughter began here about 6 years ago because some friends had recommended it. She was angry, somewhat hyper active and we learned that she had high anxiety. The best part of this center is that they are a team. They meet and talk about how best to help your child. We stuck with the plan abound today our daughter is amazing. She has overcome so many things and is successful because of their help. It is expensive because it is the best. Worth every penny!!

Money is the subject from the second you walk in until your last day of "help". I've Met taxi drivers with more compassion and empathy. I understand it's a business but they could at least pretend to care.

The team is so supportive. The cost and delays are worth everything for excellent care

Dr. Tarnow has spent 14 years helping our ADHD daughter progress from being removed from schools to finishing a masters degree and becoming a well-managed teacher!

It has been a very good experience seeing Dr. Tarnow and a number of his practitioners. What is good is that they take a team approach and if you are seeing Dr. Tarnow and other team members, they gather weekly to discuss and evaluate patient outcomes and treatment. It can be a bit challenging at times to see him but they will work with you if you are flexible. He is pretty straightforward with you and it helps if you can listen to, and take direct, pointed feedback.

Dr Tarnow bring so much experience into the room. He has been great for our family. He has everything we need under one roof. I would definitely recommend.
