My lumbar stenosis of the spine had caused my left leg to hurt so much that I could only sleep 2 or 3 hours a night; this was in April 2021. Dr Scowcroft did an ablation and the pain totally disappeared. After 18 months, my left leg is once again causing so much pain that it is adversely affecting my sleep, but also my daily activity. Of course I’ve gone to see Dr Scowcroft again, trusting him to perform another miracle. Well, that’s not fair to him, but I trust him to help relieve my pain, so I can live as full a life as possible.

This is a doctor who has a God complex... I would strongly recommend that you find someone who is willing to be a real doctor for people and not judge with an opinion that everyone is out for drugs

I saw Dr. Scowcroft for low back pain. He is quick but efficient. I have had numerous injections and surgeries with many doctors. I will say Dr. Scowcroft is the best at what he does. Without the ablation of L-1 thru L-5, I'm not sure I would still be able to walk. Thank you Dr. Scowcroft!

Dr Scowcroft is about pain relief without pushing narcotics. He alleviates pain long term with methods that do not include addicting pain meds. As a healthcare professional and pharmacist I appreciate that. Let’s get to the core cause of the pain and fix it vs numbing it with drugs. AAA+ physician.

Dr. Scowcroft was far more interested in getting out of the office than dealing with a new patient or answering questions. He even beat me to the parking lot!

Dr. Scowcroft did diagnostic procedures on my back on two occasions and then an ablation on the right side of my back. I have moderate to severe arthritis in my lumbar region, as well as spinal stenosis, which were causing severe nerve pain in my left leg. The leg pain kept me awake at night, only allowing 2 or 3 hours of sleep. After the ablation, I am now able to sleep 7 hours, with no pain in my leg. I call Dr. Scowcroft my miracle worker, and he is! I sleep better, can stand without leg pain, and my left leg now has more mobility.

I saw Dr. Scowcroft for the first time in 2016, as a follow up in the hospital after experiencing EXTREME back pain ( I was taken in by ambulance and spent the night). As part of the treatment, I was taken to his room for a trigger point injection. While interviewing me and examining my records, he asked why I was on a certain medication, which I was taking to treat peripheral neuropathy. He informed me he was starting a study with a company to test using a nerve stimulator to help neuropathy and asked if I'd be interested. I made a follow-up visit in his office and shortly went through the trial and eventually got the implant, which has helped tremendously! I have subsequently seen Dr. Scowcroft for follow-up visits as well as treatment for subsequent low back pain, which flairs up from time to time, mainly due to a birth defect I have. He has always been friendly, courteous and professional. I have never felt like he was rushing to get done with me. Highly recommend!

Please don’t see this doctor. I got the impression he doesn’t care to explain to one more patient what is going on with their back and he is all about epidurals with little explanation and curt replies. My first epidural was almost painless. It was very short and about 20% effective. My second hurt for about 3 seconds and was 50% effective. My 3rd was ineffective and it felt like he wanted to punish me. I can compare it to a hot, fierce blowtorch focused on my lower back. After about 6 seconds I was flopping on the table like a fish. The nurse takes 15 seconds to wipe your back off and then she says, “You can get up now.” I was stunned. Then she tells you to stand up and fasten your belt. Then she says follow me. If you just stand there staring at her she will eventually offer you a wheelchair. I went to a new clinic for my 4th epidural. It was 100% effective. But more important was the doctors care, his explanations, his counseling, and his staff. Like night and day.

Doctors Scowcroft is always attentive to any pain I have and resolves it as quickly as possible. He has done multiple procedures for me and I have always been happy with him and they have improved the quality of my life. He is a great doctor and all around good guy.

I waited to write this review because I felt traumatized by my experience. I wanted to write a thoughtful review and not an angry one. I am a 69 year old male. I am fairly active and walk about 3 miles every day. I am about 40 pounds overweight and my blood pressure is a little high. I hurt my back and my sciatic nerve pain was severe. I was told by an orthopedic doctor that my MRI showed a pinched nerve in my lower back and I should go to a pain management clinic for treatment. I called Midwest Pain Management and got an appointment with Dr. James Scowcroft. This was in Early April. My final visit to the clinic was on August 17th. Dr. Scowcroft is a man of few words. I did not get to know him personally. His bedside manner is inappropriate for this type of work. I learned everything I know about epidural injections online, and nothing about them from Dr. Scowcroft. And I felt no empathy from him whatsoever. My first injection was easy. I had mentally prepared myself for what I thought could be a painful experience but there was very little pain. I only got about a 30% reduction in my pain level so in 2 weeks I called the clinic and they scheduled me for a second injection. When the doctor talked to me before the 2nd injection he said since the results were poor he was going to inject me in a different place. This injection was totally different. As the injection started he told me, “You are going to feel some pressure.” That was an understatement. The pain and pressure were intense and lasted for about 3 seconds. It takes about 30 seconds for the nurse to wipe the disinfectant off your back. During this time you are stunned. You feel like you have been hit by a truck. You are expecting some comfort from somewhere but the next thing you hear is, “You can sit up now.” Seriously, you don’t even know if you can. But you sit up and they say, “You can stand and fasten your belt.” Then, “Can you walk ok? Follow me.” I was very unsteady but followed as best I could and tried to keep up with her. Fortunately this injection worked well and I had only minor pain for the next 10 weeks. But for about 6 weeks I had the uncomfortable feeling that a vice was clamped on my backbone. It made it hard to go to sleep at night. In July I called the clinic and told them my pain was back. They scheduled me for a 3rd injection. My 3rd injection was the stuff of nightmares. I was anticipating the pain and pressure like the previous injection. But this injection lasted 3 times as long. The pain and pressure were excruciating. Towards the end I felt my body starting to flop around like a fish on a dock. I don’t think this movement was voluntary. I could not believe that this was normal, that they would put people through something like this medieval torture without counseling or, at the very least, restraints to keep you stationary. Again, there is no comfort to be found here. No one to put a hand on your shoulder. Or to offer words of comfort. There is only the cold towel that cleans off the disinfectant and the surprising, “You can get up now.” I was completely stunned. Sure, I sat up, like a prisoner in North Korea ready to follow their commands. In the recovery room my bp was high but they said that was normal. This time they scheduled me to come back to see Dr. Scowcroft in 30 days. They said it was in the office across the hall and not for a procedure. My injection was effective for about 35 days. At the 30 day appointment the doctor spent about 2 minutes with me. He asked how my pain level was. It was fine at the time. He asked if I would do physical therapy and I told him, “yes.” He said he would have the reception set that up for me and he was out the door. I will never return to see that doctor again.

After a round of 3 injections that I questioned at the beginning, he ordered an MRI. I asked what he had been basing his lumbar treatment on (it was supposed to be hip, and I saw my referral that said hip). I asked the nurse if he was wanting a newer one than my surgeon had ordered and referred me on. They didn't have a copy. So he didn't follow my referral, never examined me, and did not even see my medical records. I was told he could do nothing else to help and recommended home exercises.

I’ve never made a review before but I’ve also have never been ignored for what I considered two simple requests from a doctor before either after developing a chronic nerve pain, i.e. Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) in the last year. I had simply wanted to get a prescription of Lidiocaine patch (5%) that I could use “as needed” which may not be no more than once every two weeks for my chronic pain. In fact I could get the said patch off the counter but I would have to pay a steep price of $200. My pharmacy said it should take the doctor just a quick phone call to get approval. When I was in the office he indicated it would not be a problem of obtaining 5% Lidiocaine patch. Yet I have put in a couple of calls stating the pharmarcy have not heard from them. Additionally I went to their office around noon and a nicelady at the front desk assured me someone would call me that afternoon since they were all at lunch. However, that call never came. Is compassionate and listens to our concerns extremely well. Very happy with his knowledge and level of skill. Any questions & concerns are answered in a timely manner and appreciate that. Thank you!

I would not recommend this Dr. He's cavalier and makes promises he can't keep... "i'm the best / do the most etc" then cannot even get approvals, and of course as soon as its not approved its goodbye you're on your own, like literally. He, like many Dr's today, want to sell a surgery, if it doesn't sell they boot you out... pick another.

Just met him yesterday and already getting the much needed MRI for my back and then back to see him all within a week. He listened and seemed to actually show concern. Any treatment or diagnosis is yet to be seen, but he seems very caring and trustworthy.

After your surgery is completed you better hope that you have no problems because if you do ,most likely after you make multiple attempts to get in touch with him he won't call you back and if you're lucky he'll call you back 10 days later no matter how much of pain you have ,after my surgery the pain was so severe that I end up at the emergency room four times in 10 days before Dr. Scowcroft called back and only because I threatened him to make a scene at his office . Find a different Dr.

Doesn't communicate with the patient and seems rushed.

He's super nice and friendly. I feel really lucky to have him as my pain management doctor. He made it super easy on me even when I was anxious and scared.
