James Harry Phelan

I did not have a good experience with Dr. Phelan. His patient skills were lacking, in my opinion. He spent most of his time looking at his laptop and made little eye contact. The visit, once I got into the exam room, took well over an hour, as he left the room multiple times, perhaps to take calls. Similar visits with other physicians take a fraction of the time. At the end, he seemed annoyed that I asked some questions to better understand his thinking. He seemed to talk at me, rather than to me. His demeanor reminded me of a few sub- specialists I have encountered. By contrast, other family practitioners I have dealt with in other practices since are more “people persons”. I just didn’t feel comfortable with him and never returned.

Have been a patient for decades. He listens, he asks questions and he takes his time with you.

Dr. Phelan is a marginal physician that spends all his time looking at his laptop. He does not keep complete notes so, for example, does not seem to know from one visit to the next what medications you are taking and which he had stopped prescribing. His office staff is very undereducated on customer service and even the most basics of insurance information and are very rude and abrupt. Vytalus Medical Group is a place to avoid if you are looking for care in the Kingwood area.

It was my first visit with him and he was very thorough and very nice and easy to talk to. I would recommend him!

Very good doctor! He was warm, caring, and very thorough. Asked questions and followed up on things I had put off. Suggested monitoring something others have repeatedly dismissed. I’m so thankful I saw him and will definitely keep him as my doctor.

Fantastic! Actually listened to my health concerns and made suggestions. Dr. Phelan did a complete exam and ordered blood tests. Very easy to talk to. Glad I changed over to him as my PCP

This is my personal experience... he NEVER examined me, never even ordered labs. I went to see him 3 times in as many weeks for what I was told was sciatic nerve pain. I had no medical issues prior to this 'flair' up, he told me to get a book on stretching, while typing in his computer, without EVER examining me. He finally ordered a MRI after my husband begged him. The MRI tech told me he was going to have the MRI read STAT because it was not sciatic nerve. For 3 days I called him trying to get the results, I was told the MRI was inconclusive and I needed another. That was not true, it was read to him hours after it was performed and he was told it showed I had a deadly abscess, he never called me to tell me! I was in the hospital for 6 weeks, had to have muscles removed from my body that were infected because he was incompetent and wouldn't get off of his computer to actually give me an exam. Thankfully another doctor did examine me, he saved my life and sent me to the ER where the did blood work and caught the infection. DO NOT GO SEE THIS MAN! I was thrilled to find Doctor Phelan after the last doctor I had. I went to see him In an emergency he was my Husbands Doctor after going from urgent care to urgent care to emergency no one came up with a reason for the pains in my head. Doctor Phelan examined me and listened to me and then said “I think I know what it is and how to treat it”. I could have hugged him He told me about my symptoms and gave me a script for Gabapentin. I had never heard of it. I finally got relief from the pain. I will continue to go to Doctor Phelan so will my husband I was thrilled to find Doctor Phelan after the last doctor I had. Wait time to get into the office is horrific get moved to a room you wait again staff is not professional

This man is so rude. He is snippy and condescending. I will never go back.

Went to this doctor feeling bad an came out feeling worse !!! I told him I had been feeling poorly all week long I took off from work to go see him I told him I was going on a cruise in 4 days an I wanted to feel better he said he thought it was viral so no meds an then out of the blue he said just because all this food is laid out in front of you doesn't mean you have to eat it all an then he said join an aerobics class while your on there I've been fat for 25 years he obviously doesn't like plus size people!!! He is just rude an he meant it in a rude way I have had doctors tell me to lose weight I would be healthier but none ever talk to me like he did I don't recommend this doctor!
