My parents forced me into therapy in my teens. I did not want to be there, and I did not like or trust her, even after three years. We were not a good match. She did not make it clear what therapy was, or how confidentiality worked, only that my parents had paid and therefore I had to be there. She did not acknowledge that we were not able to establish a productive therapeutic relationship, nor that I would be better served by a different therapist. Today I have an amazing therapist, but it took nearly a decade for me to learn that therapists are genuinely there to help. I will be working on the trauma she caused for the rest of my life.
