Dr. Ivan Cheng

I had very high hopes that this doctor’s reviews also reflected his character. Sadly, I was disappointed beyond compare. Failing to do anything more than the most cursory exam, and even without any referrals to some obvious follow up procedures like an MRI or anEEG, this ‘doctor’ simply stated that my symptoms are not spine related and dismissed me summarily. Time will tell, and the telling will be a revelation to some who though better of this doctor.

No stars. Suffering from what has appeared all along to be some kind of spinal leak, this doctor took all of 20 minutes to review my symptoms, tap my knee and test my reflexes and then dismissed me without referrals for a very much needed EEG and MRI of my spine. Now he claims he discussed option with me when all he said was that I could get another opinion but that I most definitely should not go to another spinal doctor. Nonsense! Not one referral or even a follow up? Look elsewhere for a professional who can help you.

I saw a PA at my first appointment. She was great. After a MRI & CT scan, I went back for an appointment with Dr. Cheng. The appointment was rushed and I didn’t feel like he had time for me. I felt like he just wanted me out of the office. I have pain that causes me to be unable to sleep at times, it brings tears to my eyes at other times, it is there from one degree to another all day. He told me I don’t have cancer, an infection, or fracture. I have had 3 cervical spine surgeries in the past. The pain I have now is worse than the past. I was confused because I saw the report form the MRI & CT before I went to the appointment. Although the radiologist report of my MRI & CT mentioned issues, Cheng told me “radiologists over-diagnose.” Cheng told me he couldn’t help me. I felt beyond helpless.

Dr. Cheng performed surgery on my low back 10 years ago. I was sad to hear he left the Bay Area. I had a very good experience and the surgery has helped me stay active.

My neck was fractured in several places!! Humpty dumpty kinda thing. He was very friendly comforting, honest. Which i appreciate. Asked and answered all our questions and made me feel very secure having him put my cervical spine back together. He was always just a phone call away after surgery and the years after. I could go see him any time i felt i had issues. Always made me feel important he even came to visit and chat with me in my hospital room after surgery. He's amazing and very talented.

I would like to give an insight into my relationship with Dr. Cheng. Having been an athlete most of my life, I was accustom to rigorous physical and sometimes dangerous activities. As I aged, now 74 yrs, I realized my bad back was preventing me from doing the things I enjoy the most. Walks on the beach with my wife, surfing, music etc. Pain is the great motivator. Eventually I decided to look for a surgeon. After several unsuccessful tries I hit the jackpot. Dr. Cheng, Orthopedic Surgeon. His credentials, demeanor, confidence and professionalism convinced me to have surgery. As it turned out it was one of the best decisions I've made. Dr. Cheng gave me my life back! He performed a L3-4 fusion on my spine nearly 3 years ago and I no longer have the pain I was dealing with for so long. I can hike with the dog and play with the grand babies again! I recommend Dr. Cheng to anyone who needs spinal surgery. He’s the best!

Dr.Cheng was a lifesaver for me. I was 72 years old and I couldn’t walk more than 100 feet without excruciating back pain requiring me to stop and sit. Through minimally invasive surgery he fused my lumbar spine and now I play golf twice a week, walk 2-3 miles every day and swim every other day—-all without pain. Additionally, Dr Cheng is warm, caring and was especially good at explaining every procedure and answering all of my questions completely. Dr. Cheng changed my life and made my future filled with promise and happiness from one of constant pain and misery. I feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Cheng as my doctor

I had a neck spinal injury in the USMC 50 years ago my cervical spine was curved form the injury a diving accident lucky i wasn't paralazed from the neck down my right side including grip was very weak. I spent 6 months in the US NAVAL hospital San Diego all they did was put me in a cervical collar. Dr.. Chang operated on me & straightend my cervical spine with what looks like a c clamp it straightend my spine. He is great i will never forget what he did for me. Dr. Chang if you get to read this thank you from me & family.

Dr. Cheng took the time to give a thorough examination. He has requested more tests before making a decision as to the direction we should go. I really appreciate the fact that he is not immediately recommending surgery for me, even though I really feel that is my only option to receive the pain at this point. Very nice Dr. And trust his judgement.
