I am 87 years old and in the spring of 2021 I began to have back and leg problems. I visited my doctor and he gave me a cortisone shot and referred me to a specialist. The specialist did an x-ray and sent me to physical therapy, which didn't help. They did an MRI and discovered I had spinal stenosis. My son suggested I go see his back doctor, Dr. Henry Elsner, at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine. I went and he looked at the MRI and said the only way to fix my problem was surgery. We set up surgery for 4-18-22 and after the surgery I felt no pain and continued to make progress. I would highly recommend Dr. Elsner to anyone having back issues. He's a fixer!! Caring surgeon Always takes his time with me and my wife Gratz bedside manner
Having an acute episode of severe back and leg pain. Dr. Elsner's assistant Cynthia got me an appointment immediately and Dr. Elsner called me to assess my problem. He then scheduled an MRI so he would have pictures before my appointment. I am scheduled for surgery two days after my appointment. I so appreciate his understanding of my need for pain relief and prevention of nerve damage.
Dr. Elsner was very knowledgeable and attentive. It was obvious he had reviewed my previous medical information.
I have hEDS, which is a hereditary connective tissue disease, so among other things it means that my spine has been a mess since I was young. I’m not young anymore and Dr Henry Elsner has now fused my spine in three places. I’m so grateful for his care of me. I rate Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine 10/5. Edited to add: I was asked to post this review, and I’m glad to do it.
Absolutely! He is the best and truly cares about his patient, family and the outcome of his care.
I regard Dr Elsner with respect and consider him to be very professional !

Dr. Elsner is the best! Not only is he one of the most highly regarded neurosurgeons in the area but he is also very caring, personable and he truly listens to his patients. I’ve never felt rushed at my appointments and have always gotten a very detailed response to any questions/concerns regarding symptoms or procedures I’ve faced. His presence is calm and reassuring and helped me to find calmness in the midst of fear and pain. I did not have a long wait time. Each staff person I came in contact with were vere nice very proffesional and very clean. I enjoyed my experience.
Dr. Elsner has been my neurosurgeon for about four years after the retirement of my former neurosurgeon in the same practice. He is very patient oriented. He spends a lot of time listening to his patients. If the patient has an identifiable cause of an issue, he tells the patient what his solution is. If cause of an issue can’t be identified, he offers options for finding out what the issue is. During my most recent visit, I asked about pain medication. I was hesitant about asking for pain meds because, I thought, any prescribed pain medication is an opioid & I know we have to be very careful with that. Dr. Elsner offered a couple of alternatives. One is an oral medication that is not classified as an opioid & we are going to try an injection. I appreciate his trying some more conservative ways of managing my pain before automatically jumping into more radical options. He did not judge me for asking for the pain meds. He understood that I am tired of being in pain.
Dr Elsner is very caring and spends as much time with you as needed to answer questions. He listens and helps you make the best decisions related to your care. He has been my physician for 19 years!
Dr. Elsner has treated my back injury for a few years. He is regarded as the best neurosurgeon in the Greensboro area and I agree. He spends as much time with patients as they need. He is very thorough. As a result, he regularly runs late. A late doctor can be an inconvenience but his treating you iss worth it. Just bring something to read. He performed Microdiscectomy on me in 2018 and L5/S1 fusion 6/2021. My back is pain free and I'm not even through my rehab yet. If you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Eisner, you should be confident that you will be well cared for by a doctor who doesn't rush to perform surgery unless you really need it. Dr Elsner is an amazing neurologist, but it is also his bedside manner that really sets him apart. Any serious health condition is scary, but Dr. Elsner will take as much time as is necessary to ensure that all of your questions and concerns are addressed. Then and only then will he help you decide on a course of action that is not only a medically sound solution, but also one that is tailored as much as possible to align with where you are in life. You will never feel that he is working his own agenda. He is a surgeon, but surgery is not his “go to” treatment. As a patient of his for nearly 20 years, it is my opinion that when you are in his care, you are in the very best hands possible.
I’ve been seeing Dr. Elsner since 2014. He is an excellent neurosurgeon who listens well, gives good advice, and performs procedures in a highly professional manner. I respect his judgment and have been very pleased with the results I have received. I would highly recommend his services.

Doctor Elsner has taken good care of me over the years with my lower back pain. I have degenerative disc disease. We had discussions on a possible surgery but he suggested steroid injection and physical therapy. After three treatments over three years the pain has truly diminished. It’s been over 5 years since I have seen Dr.Elsner and now the pain in coming back. Time to visit him again for a shot. He has always taken time to listen to my issue and concerns and has always suggested the right treatment. I don’t want an assistant to do the shot I only want Dr. Elsner to do the shot himself and he has every time when he could spend his time with other challenging surgeries. I highly recommend choosing him as your neurosurgeon. I am looking forward to see him again so he can Relieve me from my lower back pain. Dr. Elsner is the best. He has successfully operated on me four times. I would not let anyone else operate on my spine. Dr. Elsner takes time with you and answers all questions. I highly recommend him!
I suffered permanent nerve damage damage resulting in foot drop. Dr. Elster was my surgeon. I only saw his assistant in the week following the surgery. Recovery and physical therapy were extremely difficult given the quality of care at the hospital. For example, when I became extremely weak and could not do physical therapy, a student nurse suggested that my children get a Hospitalist involved because she believed I needed a blood transfusion. I did require transfusion. This is only one example of the lack of care by the surgeon that affected my recovery. I was assured by Dr. Eisner during each consultation that my physical therapy post surgery would take place in the hospital. My family was given one day of notice that I was being transferred to an outside facility. My surgery with Dr. Elsner resulted in a permanent disability that forever changed my quality of life. My mother had surgery with Dr. Elsner that left her with a permanent disability. Our family did not experience anything positive after her surgery with Dr. Elsner or his practice. Dr. Elsner went on vacation immediately following the surgery, so we never saw him while my mother was in ICU at Cone. He never mentioned this vacation prior to surgery. He stated repeatedly during pre-surgery consultations that he never had a patient unable to walk out of the hospital - not true. We have sought professional opinions from surgeons at Wake and Duke who confirm there was an error during the surgery that can never be repaired. It is sad that my mother was basically bandoned by Dr. Elsner after her surgery. He knows the truth. His behavior was reprehensible. Perhaps one day he will do the right thing and and acknowledge the error that left my mother disabled for the rest of her life. I recommend Dr Elsner very, very highly. In August 2013 my back and right leg were badly injured in a construction accident. Dr Elsner tried for months of non-invasive methods to resolve the damage and pain, but none worked. The first surgery, in January 2014, for spinal stenosis, improved but did not solve the pain. He was going to perform a second spinal surgery in March, but knew he was going to be traveling right after, and did not want to operate and then not be there for me immediately after, which I much appreciated. However, the pain was such--especially running down one leg--that I implored him to do *something* in March; he went in on the outside of my right knee/calf and relieved some of the pressure on the nerves, relieving the pain level by maybe 70%. When he returned from his trip, he did another set of tests; they revealed further disc degeneration since we'd begun treatment. While Dr Elsner had voted to avoid removing disc and replacing them with titanium, and fusing, that's what he ultimately recommended for April surgery--after we discussed all scenarios at length. He'd already removed pretty much all the pressure points up and down my spine and in my leg where the nerves had been smashed against bone. Finally, he replaced and fused three vertebrae. After an extremely painful recovery week in the hospital, during why Dr Elsner visited at least once a day, the pain from the surgery itself began to recede and *all* the pain from the accident was *gone*. All the pain was gone! I feel that Dr Elsner tried every non invasive method he could and, when surgery revealed multiple issues, he persevered until he'd solved every issue. I feel he cared deeply, was warm and personable, sensitive and professional as well as funny, and paid terrific personal attention to my specific, unusual injury. I've recommended him to many people, all of whom had terrific experiences and outcomes. I recommend Dr Elsner very, very highly.
