Grant Alan Skidmore

I was referred to Dr Skidmore's office when I discovered I had one disc which had already exploded in the lumbar region and a disc which was protruding and pressing against my spinal cord. I must say I have truly been blessed by the good doctor himself and his supremely professional staff. I've dealt with doctors before and the confusion which their office can often times produce. Dr Skidmore and his associates are the most professional people I have ever had a chance to work with. I say work with because he made me an integral part of all medical decisions. He was never pushy but he gave his opinion. During my two surgeries he came out personally to my wife and talked her through their success, and assuring her that I was in good hands. He always remembers our last visit and always comes in with a warm, optimistic disposition. The only downside to my inevitable healing is that there will soon come a time when I will no longer need to grace the doors of his office. Thanks, Dr Skidmore.

This office is an absolute joke!! Jayme returns call when she feels like it. The office is completely dishonest and not forthcoming at all. Surgery scheduled for December 30th 2022, Surgery Denied to medical records not being sent in. Supposedly they were faxed in. Yet this is not the proper way to submit documents to United Healthcare. Surgery reschedule two more times. A peer to peer call was scheduled with he surgeon to speed up the approval process vs filing an appeal. When the insurance medical physician spoke with Dr. Skidmore he was unprepared and the surgery was denied and cancelled again. Instead of calling and telling us this, the decide they now sant to change the procedure so that can run a new prior authorization. Stay far away from this place. Sketchy at best. Jayme needs to be terminated.

If I could give this office a 0 rating I would. The physician is top notch; however, the office manager or secretary or whatever she decides her title to be for the day, Jayme is an absolutely incompetent, disorganized and disrespectful person. Her patient care is non-existent and she can't seem to turn in insurance documents on time so my procedure gets cancelled repeatedly and she doesn't care. I have never had anyone speak to me the way she does. If the Dr. would get rid of her all would be well. She raised my blood pressure, upset my husband and just blatantly dismissed me. I cannot get any answers. Both the hospital and insurance companies have documentation it was the fault of my physician's office. She can talk to you about all of the Real Housewives but cannot seem to find answers to what is relevant and related to me, as patient. If I could give this office a 0 rating I would. Yes you do have wait but the weight is worth it Dr. Skidmore and Mike take time to lidten to you and also explain opions to you. I have been with them since 2011. Excellent physician

He read my mri for my lower back. I have arthritis so he has recommended some steps so I can get better.

Went to him for years; used to be conscientious and concerned about patient. In recent times, he has become complacent, doesn't seem to be careful & concerned about patients; all he wants is the operation, then he's through with you.

Dr Skidmore is the best doctor I've ever had. He listens, he explains, he takes his time to make sure you understand what is happening and what your options are. I just love his entire office from the receptionists to his secretary, Jamie, to his PA Michael.

I have been seeing Dr. Skidmore for several years for spinal issues from severe arthritis. He is caring and listens to his patients. The only reason I gave a 4 instead of a 5 is the office wait time when there for an appointment. 3 SURGERIES NOW WITH DR. SKIDMORE. Best Dr I have had the pleasure of dealing with. Several other DR,s could not find the problem with my neck but he found it in 10 seconds. Have had 2 additional lumbar laminectomy and fusions with amazing results. Moving to Alabama soon and if I ever need neck or back surgery again I will be flying back to Va to have DR. He listens. He does a detail search to get to the root of the problem. He make sure you understand what the issues and ways to cure the problem.

Dr. Grant A. Skidmore preformed a laminectomy T1-T4 due to a SSEH for me. He was able to clearly communicate the procedure before preforming. Prior to the surgery I was paraplegia with numbness up to my sternum. Dr. Grant A. Skidmore's precision surgical skills resulted in me being able to walk again. He was friendly and professional. Dr. Skidmore and his staff were great! From the initial meet throughout the entire process he, his PA, and medical staff were very caring, knowledgeable and put my questions and concerns first. The front desk staff is also very friendly and helpful. The other reviews on here are shameful but to each his own. I was weary at first reading the reviews too but I decided to do more research instead of taking others comments for face value. I’m happy with Dr. Skidmore and his team and would recommend his services. He has been practicing for over 28 years and is board certified! You’re in good hands! Love the man! I was in so much pain I could barely live my life. I tried everything, PT, pain shots in my back, etc. Dr. Skidmore saw me, ordered some test and told me my back was virtually broken. I was scared about having surgery. He reassured me and told me my back would be 100% better. Three days later I was having surgery. Now 6 months have passed and I am about 90-95% better. I can do anything. As time goes on, I know I will hit that 100% mark. Thank you to Dr. Skidmore and his OR staff.

Dr. Skidmore did a lamenectomy on my L1/S5 due to a crack, spinal stenosis, Spondylosis and Spondylolisthesis. I use to have excruciating pain all up and down the left side of my back and leg. After the surgery I do not have the pain from before but I do have numbness and tingling in my left leg. I guess this is common and will subside/go away over time. It’s only been a few days since surgery so I’m still in pain from the incision. Taking my meds and resting. Not overdoing it.

I am rating this a 1 for several reasons. First, it took them almost an hour to call me back for my appointment, and then when it was over I had to sit back down and wait an additional 10 minutes just to check out. The Physicians Assistant I saw told me he was going to give me better medication for my pain, however when I left I had nothing. I called 5-10 minutes later asking if my prescription was sent to my pharmacy, and the lady I spoke to said that the PA never said anything about medication. I ask if they could ask him about it, and miraculously he had already left, 5-10 minutes after I left. Also you have to call a thousand times just to get an answer. I will be looking for a different place. The office staff seems very nonchalant. The only person worth mentioning is Ms. Jocelyn. Very sweet and caring. WORST DOCTOR'S VISIT EVER. I have never experienced a more unprofessional medical office. Administratively this place is an absolute nightmare. Recently they rescheduled our appointment and attempted to contact us by calling one number, one time and couldn't get through to leave a message. That was their one and only attempt and when we showed up they communicated that to us and didn't try to fit us in or anything. Knowing that I filled out all those forms when registering as a new patient, I KNOW I gave more than one phone number, in addition to an email address! The staff told me repeatedly that there is only one number "in their system". Um, okay... that's a problem, don't you think?!! Could you maybe pull the file and look at all those forms I filled out? Why bother have your patients fill out all those forms, if you are only going to use some of the information? Why do you want my email address? Why do you want my home, work and cell numbers? Why do you want an alternate contact? I bet if I owed them money they sure would suddenly become quite resourceful and look at those forms. This is on top of waiting HOURS to see a doc multiple times, having trouble even making an appointment over the phone, unreturned calls and no support from their office in attempt to get questions answered. He may be a great surgeon (I don't really even know he is, as we inherited him in an emergency situation), but his office surely doesn't reflect or come anywhere close to even average standards. Running an office should be the easy part, right... I mean it's not surgery! The worst part... they don't care. They don't want to fix it or make it better. The staff is so complacent. Their admin processes are broken and there is no leadership or desire to make it better. Without going into all the details, PLEASE RUN from Dr. Grant Skidmore with Neurosurgical Specialists!! I had a triple laminectomy two months ago to help severe stabbing pain in my left lower back and sciatica down back of right leg. Now I still have same pain, but new severe pain in right lower back. New MRI shows why I still hurt! Between this doctor and the night nurses Monica and Agnes on Post Op Surgery 2nd Floor at Chesapeake Medical Center, I am lucky to be alive!!! I was supposed to be recuperating after surgery 3-5 days in hospital per Dr. Skidmore. I had 20 staples in my back and in severe pain and I sobbed in horrible pain and the night nurses would NOT come to my room. Nurse Monica checked my blood pressure and I asked for something for my pain. She walked out of my room stating " Nope, blood pressure too low, NOT ON MY WATCH!! I sobbed and sobbed very loud for several hours hoping anyone would come. I went 6 hours without pain meds or anyone coming to my room with my back burning on fire and me holding myself up with my arms on the bedrails so my back didn't touch the bed. My blood pressure is normal to low and has never been an issue in my life so this was not a factor. When Dr. Skidmore came in 1st morning after surgery, he was furious with me getting a bad report from the nurses. Yes, this happened again the 2nd night and next morning he was screaming at me and then I had to endure him ripping the large bandage off to put on new. Also the 2nd evening, I started having terrible cramping going down my legs really scaring me so I asked Nurse Monica to please call the Dr. for me. She laughed out loud and walked out. My Admin Assistant and a Girlfriend and her husband were in the room visiting. Awhile later, the nurse came back and told me I would NOT be talking to the Dr. or his PA, Michael!! I told the Dr. the 2nd morning post-op while he was screaming at me that I was cramping in my legs and I had asked the nurse to call him the night before. He laughed loudly and said "That would never happen because they don't have my number!" I have always had a terrible time getting a human voice to answer the office lines too. I have also learned that recently most of Dr. Skidmore's office staff walked out on him because of how they are treated by him. I asked the hospital In-House Dr. for help as he was doing rounds to every patient and he said he can't change another Dr's orders. He was nice and felt so sorry for me. I called my 82 year old Mother in another state and she told me to ask if I could go to a Rehabilitation Center to recuperate instead of staying in this place. That was arranged & approved with my insurance co. the 2nd morning after surgery to go that day by ambulance. I was taken at 9PM to the Beth Shalom Rehab Center and they were my Angels for 7 days. They were a bit upset that Ches. Regional sent me so late. I was shaking when I got there and they just held me..... I could NOT believe a Dr. and Hospital can treat someone this way and still be in business. I have had several surgeries in my life and never had the need to write a complaint letter. I am writing this note to hopefully help you make a better choice away from this Dr. or Hospital. Another Dr. referred me to Dr. Skidmore. Several years ago I went to Dr. Vijay Singh and I highly recommend him and all of the Doctors in this group, Neurosurgical Associates across the street from Norfolk General Hospital. I went to Dr. Skidmore, and he made me feel comfortable about having the surgery and my surgery was a success! His staff was the best. He was a godsend, considering I was a difficult patient.

Dr. Skidmore and his entire team is one of the best. Due to a very serious accident in 1998 (I was stopped on the highway and was rear ended by a large pickup going about 50 mph) I have had to have five separate surgeries. The latest one in April 2017. All by Dr.Skidmore. everyone was a success. I strongly recommend Dr. Skidmore to anyone needing spine surgery. His team works miracles. I am so thrilled he was recommended by my family doctor after I had me accident.

I had a back injury and when it comes to neurology you need someone who is cautious and that is Dr. Skidmore. He is thorough and provides all options before recommending surgery. Ultimately I needed surgery and I feel I had the best surgeon in the business. I have recovered completely and am grateful to Dr. Skidmore.

I was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis and was in unchartered waters. I didnt know any doctors or surgeons in this area so i set appointments with 2 other doctors and felt confident and comfortable after talking to Dr Skidmore about the procedure necessary so I can continue to walk. he was my third doctor I interviewed and he was the most experienced and brought the most to the table. The surgery was and is a success i am still walking and able to do my arduous job and keep my family feed. Dr. Skidmore is a very skilled surgeon and I would not trust anyone else to touch my back. My only complaint are the wait times, but it is because he does take time with his patients.
