Gary Shapiro

Dr Shapiro failed my 5-way back fusion. I ended up in the ICU with high fevers, my leg muscles locked up in excruciating pain, diminished blood pressure, & blood poisoning from an improperly disected synovial cyst that left my white blood cell count below HIV levels. The hospital's infectious diseases doctor discovered that he put screws into my spinal column. They directed him back to fix it and search for infections. Dr Shapiro misled me saying he was taking out 1 "extra" screw. He actually removed 4 of 10 screws & left it unstable. At the 6 month checkup, He ordered a CT. The results called for an MRI twice. He was evasive and tried to talk me out of it. When I relented, he said: "If you want an MRI I'll give you one". I returned for the results. He stated "Great News! Everything is tight and you don't need any more surgeries". I asked for a report copy that reported a perilucency in the S1 distal screw. That means it's loose, he lied to me, and didn't care about my severe pain. I had to find a neurosurgeon to bypass his mess by bolting my entire lower back into my pelvis. Malpractice suit was filed and forced to be dropped because Illinois requires a Certificate of Merit signed by one of his colleagues who participate in the same code of silence as killer cops. No Justice. No compensation for the two revision surgeries that I am still paying off.

Very knowledgeable and thorough. Did excellent surgery and I am healing well after an awful surgery done by Dr. Citow who made my sciatic pain worse. I highly recommend Dr. Gray Shapiro!

This was a visit after 7 years. Super friendly staff, very organize and clean office. Dr. Shapiro was awesome as always, and the process was fast, clear and understanding!

I am 4 weeks post spinal fusion with decompression and am doing great. Dr. Shapiro and his team were efficient and available at all steps of the process.

Gary is amazing! He did a double microdiscectomy and laminectomy on Nov 30th, 2020. I haven’t felt this great since high school. He is a wonderful, no nonsense doctor. This man will change your life for the best.

Great experience at Dr Shapiro’s office. I was seen by the doctor exactly at my scheduled time (which almost never happens on medical offices). He was knowledgeable and had a great bedside manner. Would highly recommend him for neck issues.

Two words: Miracle Worker. Dr. Shapiro performed a L4-L5 microdiscectomy on me 1/7/21 and I couldn't be more pleased with the process or the outcome. I was in serious pain prior to surgery. He took me seriously, got me in for the procedure quickly, explained both the process and the recovery thoroughly, and provided me contact information in case I needed to reach him prior to or after the surgery. I did end up contacting him after-hours post-surgery and I am very pleased with the response time and solution he provided. Dr. Shapiro is the BEST SURGEON !! He is the expert for what he does. He knows what he is doing and he is always looking after the best interest of his patients. I was in so much pain when I went in for surgery and when I woke up I can feel the difference. I feel so much better. I would highly recommend to see Dr. Shapiro to all people that suffering from pain or having issues with their back. He will make your life so much easier. Dr Shapiro was my second opinion. He confirmed the first opinion and I chose to use him as my surgeon for a few reasons. He explained my the details of my back injury clearly and thoroughly. He also detailed the proposed procedure, confidently answering all of my questions. The recovery timeline that Dr Shapiro laid out was significantly shorter than the alternate surgeon proposed. A little over a week since surgery, my initial pain is gone and I am exactly where I had hoped to be on the recovery curve. Dr. Shapiro and his staff have been wonderful. I’ve gone through a few different orthopedic surgeons and he was the one who was finally able to fix my issue. His Athletic trainer, Christina has been fantastic. She guided me through the whole process and helped calm the nerves. Because of her kind nature, I knew I was in good hands. Highly recommended... he is very easy to talk to and takes time to answer all of my questions. 6 weeks out form spinal fusion and progressing well. My husband had 2 surgeries with Dr. Shapiro-the first one was to remove a cyst that he thought was causing his back pain-that did not help. Next he had a laminectomy and spinal fusion. Nine months later he cannot walk more than a block, cannot stand more than 5 minutes and has numbness in his leg and foot. He has nerve damage and is in chronic pain. He asked the Dr for another MRI and he said there isn’t another surgery he can do ....just give it time....that’s not good enough! He has had PT, several steroid injections, Chiropractic visits, massage etc. He recently had another opinion from a neurosurgeon and he said the screws used in his surgery by Dr. Shapiro were too short (half the size they should be) and there is slippage...sounds like a botch job to me! I would use another surgeon!

I saw Dr. Shapiro for an aching back. He was extremely thorough. From my first visit to my last, I knew he was listening, that he cared, and I trusted him to do the best thing for me. He helped me a lot! I cannot recommend Dr. Portland more highly - and I do to everyone I know.

I am SO grateful for Dr Shapiro!! He is the 2nd surgeon I saw for my back and he was warm, friendly but yet confident when I met him. He allowed me to talk him everything that was going on and then said “ok, here’s what’s wrong with your back, and I’m going to tell you why why you’re going to choose me for the job!” He explained everything and answered all my questions. I had a Anterior Interbody lumbar fusion L5/S1 . He worked with another surgeon who opened my stomach up and moved my organs over and Dr Shapiro then placed the spacer in my spine and the carbon fiber cage. 2 weeks later I’m working out within reason and by 6 weeks post op I’ll have no restrictions. I’m no longer in everyday pain and I’m so grateful to be pain free!!! I honestly don’t know what I’d have done without him!

There is Nothing better than going to a doctors office and have a great experience Illinois bone and joint is one of the best institutes This is my Fifth time that I needed an appointment on different parts and limbs. Dr Gary Shapiro and I had a set down because of some spinal issues I made three other appointments I have canceled those appointments now .If I need surgery Dr. Schapiro is going to be my surgeon this doctor answered all my questions and my needs. I’d recommend Dr. Schapiro to any individual who has a back problem . I saw Dr Shapiro at ortho access. I am pretty sure I broke my toe. It’s not his specialty, but he didn’t examine my foot, offer to put it in a boot so it could heal. All he did was offer steroids and upsell other ibji doctors. If he’s not diverse enough to treat beyond a hip, he shouldn’t work in ortho access. Basically a waste of my co pay and I still have to go back I saw Dr Shapiro at ortho access. I am pretty sure I broke my toe. Not at all. Wrote an inaccurate report of visit and made an erroneous statement which seems impossible and difficult to amend. Does not listen or hear what i said at all. Wrote down two diagnosis which are totally inaccurate and false and ridiculous yet they are part of my medical history even though I have never been diagnosed with either one.

Now I am currently experiencing debilitating back pain and spasms that prevent me from functioning at almost any level. I would definitely recommend Dr. Shapiro to anyone who asked! I had two failed back to back lumbar surgeries by a different surgeon. Dr. Shapiro was able to determine why they failed and do a third surgery to correct the botched surgeries. I also had symptoms of a more serious nature with my arm and neck and ended up having to have cervical surgery 2 weeks later due to several ruptured cervical discs. I could have ended up not being able to walk. He was very professional and good bedside manner
