Reviews for Dr. Gary Hamamoto
Competent, professional, caring, respectful
I have had two procedures one was for My Gall bladder and a procedure for repair of inguinal hernias. He is the best doctor and I’m happy he operated and explained the procedures excellently.
????
Excellent Care-Had my Gall Bladder removed and a hernia fixed. Explained everything so I could understand. Dr Hamamoto and the whole staff at Northwest made me feel well taken care of. Professional and attentive. Would highly recommend.
Unbelievable - after driving 30 minutes to the office, I took a wrong exit. Was going to be 5 minutes late and he cancelled on me. Won't ever go back again.
Dr. Hamamoto was wonderful. I had an infected cyst that had to be removed and I was nervous. He explained everything to me and had excellent bedside manner. He staff was wonderful as well.
Good pre-procedure instructions and check-ins, friendly staff, clear explanations. Five stars, would prefer not to do again, but if I had to would definitely go back there.

First, there aren't enough stars here, he's a 10 out of five. Starting with his manner that is calming and disharming to a patient in need of surgery, while fully walking them thru a procedure. And THE BIG THING, he's a fantastic surgeon (recognized and a member of F.A.C.S.). After surgery (mine-elongated by several hrs 6.5 in all) he sat down next to my tearful wife and calmed her fears by taking the time to review the event and explain I would be OK. HE came every single day to visit me and spend time talking about thresholds to meet, my current condition, and let me know what he thought about the process of recovery. He is the BEST. If only they could use him to make the mold. First, there aren't enough stars here, he's a 10 out of five. The best IG Dr I know
I had a colonoscopy performed and a large polyp was found. Dr Hamamoto could not remove it and wanted to do surgery. I found a specialist who could remove it through a colonoscopy procedure. I also liked the Kroh center at gbmc which was a better facility to have this procedure done. always get second opinions
Excellent surgeon, great compassion, and shoots straight

I was referred to consult Dr. Hamamoto for a swollen/infected cyst that became larger (about 5 times larger) in the recent weeks. There were 4 things about him that made me questioned his professionalism and knowledge. (1) He recommended an immediate procedure to drain it or even remove it right away without being able to tell how big of the incision might be or how much recovery it might involve afterwards. He did not think that this procedure would affect my upcoming week-long long-distance travel in 3 days or business meetings. (Really??? My past experience was that depending on the incision location, it more or less affected daily activities, particularly the first few days after the procedure.) (2) He checked the swollen spot (apparently infected) without using any glove. (3) He squeezed the swollen spot very hard. The originally mild pain got "aggravated" afterwards. I needed to take Ibuprofen and use ice pack to calm the area down after I went home. Later when I googled, I found several web sources suggest not to squeeze cysts. (4) After I explained that my upcoming business and travel would take two weeks, he prescribed one-week antibiotics and said, if the infection got worse, you just had to see a doctor in your travel country/destination. (OK... this really made me worried about travel...) His advice did not feel right to me. So I went to seek a 2nd opinion the following day from a female doctor. She looked at the infected cyst and said she would wait until the inflammation/infection completely calms down and the cyst goes back down to its normal size before performing any removal procedure. This could minimize the size of the needed incision. With the size of my swollen cyst (5 cm wide), the incision would be a good size one (likely would be at least two times longer than the swollen cyst). She gave me a shot at the swollen spot to help shrine the swollen spot as well as prescribe two-week antibiotics. She will re-exam the cyst again in 3 weeks before determining the suitable timing for the removal procedure. Within 24 hours, my swollen cyst went down and the pain became unnoticeable. Now I can look forward to my upcoming travel and business meetings next two weeks, then deal with the procedure once I have my follow-up appointment. The difference between the two doctors is huge to me. I will say this. One "sells worries" and "tries to get quick money". The other one is honest about what's the best for a patient. Great bedside manner. Very professional. Has done all my surgeries and colonoscopys.
Best doctor ever! It's been about a year since my surgery and in-office incision with Dr. Hamamoto, and while I was nervous, he and his staff were knowledgeable and walked me through every step. It was a very pleasant experience. Would recommend a million times!!
Dr. Hamamoto has operated on almost every single person in my family, myself included. He has been our "go to" surgeon for as long as I can remember. He began operating on me when I was 12 years old and needed my appendix removed and he's been my trusted surgeon since that day. He's even helped drain an absess on my toddler's tush! Whenever I go to the hospital and find myself in severe pain and the threat of surgery looms over me, I find peace and comfort in knowing that I have the best surgeon around and that he will take excellent care of me! I am not a medical professional but as a patient I can share comments about my experience as well as comments other doctors have shared about Dr Hamamoto. I originally went in to have a hernia diagnosed. After a "consultation" with Dr Hamamoto I was refereed for a series of very expensive and in retrospect unnecessary tests. On the follow up appointment I was told by the doctor that in his opinion I did not have a hernia that I merely needed to "slow down". Less then a month later I was diagnosed with a femoral hernia that now required Open surgery to address because it had gotten much more severe. Of the three specialist that I saw related to the surgery, not one could believe that a surgeon experienced in hernia's could have missed diagnosing what I was enduring. When I addressed the issue with Dr Hamamoto he offered new apologies or even contrition for his error - however, he clearly expressed his dissatisfaction that I mentioned this in a public forum. Make an informed choice when selecting a surgeon.
