About Eric J Woodard
Reviews for Eric J Woodard
Eric Woodard is an outstanding surgeon. I have had two surgeries both successful on a complex spine. However, he can be arrogant, pompous, and cocky as well as short tempered. He can actually be mean as well as his PA and admins. He will blame the patient before he takes any responsibility for his own behavior or that of his colleagues. It makes it hard to get on with him.
Just the worst. Condescending attitude, miscommunication, no communication, no follow up, horrible hospital staff. Far worse off today than I was before surgery. It’s been almost 2 years since my surgery and the ordeal still haunts me.

Dr. Woodward and his assistant Cody are considered the A team. I don't know if I can even find the words to say how much I appreciate their hard work in their knowledge. I was someone that could not even stand longer than five minutes without being in so much pain it would bring tears to my eyes. Dr. Woodward was booked way out until next year and he knew how much pain I was in and he found a spot for me. I think he is one of the greatest neurological surgeons around this area. I am now up and walking around without any pain. I might have had to indoor some massive discomfort from this surgery but it was so worth it thank you Dr. Woodward and Cody my A team! I could write a book about the level of care and attention that I have received from Dr. Woodard and his staff, Latisha in the office, Cody his assistant and the entire nursing staff in the recovery wing during my recent surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital. Instead, I will simply say that he is probably the best neurosurgeon in the country. His dedication to his patients is truly exceptional and he works tirelessly to help as many as he can. He is also a great person. Wishing them all the best. Dr. Woodard is a very gifted surgeon, as it shows with a very, very, busy practice. His staff was always kind and did their best to get back to me as soon as possible. My surgery went great and practically pain free. The experience was wonderful. As for the other negative comments, they are superfluous. I was questionable myself before going in after reading these, and even brought it up with their staff, and they answered all of my questions and never rushed me. The negative comment from the Mass health mom is astonishing. Sounds like Dr. Woodard did a Pro-Bono case for your son many years ago, and she feels entitled for continuous free care. Rather find another Physician, she instead denigrated a wonderful surgeon because she didn't get her way. The long wait was worth it. My surgery recovery was not bad and practically pain free. If you want the best, he's the best.
I had been referred to Dr. Woodard by a family friend and Boston Cardiologist. I made an appointment on May 11th for July 20th at 11:30am. I received a call 2 weeks before the appointment stating that the appointment would be a telehealth appointment if I wanted to have an appointment. I said “yes” I want an appointment as this is why I called in May and I am having excruciating pain daily. I also stated that I would send my MRI so the doctor would have it and develop a medical plan that we could discuss during the telehealth visit. Okay, July 20th arrived I waited 7 hours and no call from Dr. Woodard although when I called his office I was assured by his staff that he was just behind and he would call. July 21st called his office and was told he would get the message and get back to me-No call. 7/22 I called his office and asked for my MRI disc to be sent back to me. He is obviously to busy to properly care for his patients!
I have degenerative disk disease and have had 4 back surgeries, 3 of them fusions. The fusions were done by Dr. Woodard and I have nothing but great things to say about him, his PA Cody, his office staff and the nurses that cared for me post op. His office is very busy and a couple of times he was called out of the office to help a fellow surgeon during surgery when they wanted his opinion, which says a lot about how respected he is. Inconvenient, you bet, but he will give his all when it's your turn for surgery. When I went to PT in Auburn, MA after my surgery, my PT said she had treated a couple of his patients and they always seemed to heal faster and have better outcomes than her other patients. In talking with other patients while waiting my turn, I discovered how far some of them had come and how other surgeries they had were not successful. I always bring a basket of homemade cookies to him and his staff to show how grateful I am to not be in pain any more. Carolyn Banfill
I took my mother to see Dr Woodard a year ago and he assured her that he could absolutely help her. Went as far as to pat her hand and tell her that he had this. He gave her a list of things to do prior to surgery. She did everything he told her.. and he had her keep coming in for visit after visit checking on her progress. Where he usually spent all of 5 minutes with her. When we finally started pressing for a surgery date he became cold and distant and wouldn't give her a straight answer...and when pushed told her she'd have to wait another 6-8 months as he's very busy. Then said her surgery would probably be complicated and she should have it done at a bigger better hospital. Like mass general. I truly believe this man never Intended to ever do her surgery. I think he scheduled office visit after office visit to just keep billing her insurance. I hope there is karma and some day someone treates someone he loves with the same disregard he treated us to. I hope he feels as helpless as we feel right now. I took my mother to see Dr Woodard a year ago and he assured her that he could absolutely help her. I was referred to Dr. Woodard by my neurologist. When I appeared for my first visit, I waited 1hour, before being examined by an attending physician. After the exam, I met Dr. Woodard for 10 minutes. After undergoing the necessary test, I returned to go over the results, I again met with the attending physician, who recommended surgery. At that time I was given the option of scheduling the surgery, and If I wanted to meet with Dr. Woodard, it would take longer. I opted to schedule a consult with Dr. Woodard . I again waited for 45 min . I expressed my concerns to him, and his only response was that he is busy. I have never encountered such a cold uncaring doctor who never stretched his hand to shake my hand! I never returned to The New England Baptist Hospital. After a few hiccups at the beginning, the treatment and service I had from Dr. Woodard and his staff was nothing but 5 stars. Initially there was some confusion over the surgical procedure I would have, but as soon as it was resolved the staff were amazing at getting my surgery date scheduled as quickly as possible and even contacted me with a cancelation to move the surgery date forward. Dr. Woodard has a very calming, compassionate, knowledgable approach to patient care and was readily available when I had questions or concerns about my surgery (L4/L5 laminectomy and L5/S1 transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, or TLIF). Dr. Woodard's PA, Cody, was also instrumental in making me feel comfortable with the process pre- and post-op and the hospital staff were also all top notch. Just a caring, professional team throughout the entire experience.
Very thankful to Dr Woodard for his kindness and expertise!!
Dr Woodard is a great surgeon very professional glad to say he is my surgeon i didn't get any relief from the surgery but I'll do whatever it takes to feel better i will never let anyone else operate on me but him !!
I had my second surgery done by Dr Woodard on Dec 6, 2018 an L4 L5 fusion and an L5 S1 TLIF with very positive results. Not only is Dr Woodard an exceptional surgeon he is a very caring person who listens to his patients. Consider yourself very fortunate to be under his care!
I have been a longtime patient of Dr. Woodard and would never let another surgeon perform surgery on me because he is a genius and all my surgeries were successful. As far as the Office Staff is concerned, I don't know what all the negative comments are about. In the over 10 years I have dealt with his staff, I have always been treated with respect, a very caring attitude and a genuine concern for my problem. Sometimes the wait is long, and I have been waiting for my appointment when the Doctor is called into surgery that is being performed by another doctor in the hospital and they need his expertise. This only proves how knowledgeable and respected by his peers he is. I know the wait will be worth it and when it's my turn the results will be worth it. After one of my back surgeries I was having a PT appointment in Auburn, MA and the PT noted the she had myself and another patient as patients of Dr. Woodard. She remarked how well the both of us were doing and how quickly we were recovering compared to her other patients. His PA, Cody is very caring and really listens to what your symptoms are and gives his input in language you can understand. While in the hospital for 3 of my surgeries, the nurses on the floor really knew what they're doing and the care was excellent. After one of my surgeries, my husband and daughters were approached by Dr. Woodard in the lobby so that he could tell them how my surgery went. They told me afterwards that they thought the surgery didn't go well by the "drawn", tired look on his face as he approached them. This surgery is intense and it takes a lot out of him, he holds your life and your future in his hands, very gifted hands. Dr. Woodard and his staff are well worth the drive to Boston. I wouldn't let anyone else "touch" me or any of my loved ones. I referred my sister who is a disabled nurse to him because she was having problems with her cervical spine. Her insurance kept denying her surgery and said the MRI wasn't that bad. The Doctor fought for the surgery and when he was finally able to do perform it, he said the MRI hadn't shown how serious the damage was. If she had fallen or been "rear ended" she could have been paralyzed! A doctor and his staff who do not treat their patients with professionalism. At my pre-ops screening on2/20/19 I found out in a written report that the surgery Woodard was conducting on 3/5/19 was far more severe than he described to me on 11/14/18. I was frightened and began calling his office requesting clarification. I called daily without response. I finally got an email that Woodard would call on 2/27/19. He did and told me since I did not trust him he was cancelling my surgery. Callous!
After 15 yrs of back pain, PT, & lots of RFLs/injections, I needed surgery. I consulted w/ 3 well-known surgeons, incl Dr. Woodard, his name having been given to me by a pain specialist at BIDMC. My research showed that he was one of the top neurosurgeons in the area, & known for treating complex cases, & repairing others’ failed surgeries. His team, specifically PA Codey Gillum, were knowledgeable, professional, responsive, & NICE! I'm recovering quickly, and already feel better than before.
This is the first review I have ever written, but I felt I should at least warn any future patients. The doctors are wonderful, however the front office is the worst I have ever dealt with. I had read the reviews prior to choosing Dr. Woodard but felt that the poor reviews of the office staff (of which there were many) would probably not outweigh the positive things I had heard about the surgical staff. I was wrong. All things flow through the front office. They have been rude on phone calls, for which I've waited up to 45 minutes just to get through. I was told on a Monday that I would receive a call shortly (indicating that day) regarding CAT scan results from a test done the week prior. When I called back on a Thursday because I had still not received a call, I was told everyone had been out for the week. They had actually promised a return phone call when they knew no one was in the office to return that call. Another example was, the paperwork that was to be sent to my office after surgery clearing me for work was never sent. After 3 days of repeated calling it was finally sent, however the dates were incorrect. As a result I was sent home and spent the next day sitting in the doctors office until they corrected the problem. These are just a couple of examples, there are many more. In a city that has such world class hospitals, I would never choose this hospital again. This is the first review I have ever written, but I felt I should at least warn any future patients. Dr Woodard is brilliant. The multi-level fusion was sucessful but L2 stenosis must now be surgically mitigated. I mistakeningly canceled this surgery on L2 responded well to steroid injections. I am returning to Dr Woodard for this procedure. Complaints about the office staff are superficial.
I saw Dr. Woodard in 2011 for drop foot due to back issues. I saw two other doctors before him and each suggested surgery Dr Woodard said there was a 90% chance it would get better if I continued my exercise. He was right! I intend to see him again for current back issues because of his honesty and knwoledge!
I had an anterior discectomy on February 5,2018 with Dr Woodard. He is so thorough and kind. A great combination when you are nervous about your operation! Great staff too! He will go out of his way to make you comfortable going in and he is there for your after care. I had an issue about something I ate and he called me back in 5 minutes to discuss it. I felt very cared for. I received immediate relief from 2 years of pain and expect that I will continue my recovery in a positive manner!
Dr Eric Woodard I'm so disappointed we have the best hospitals in Boston but only if you have money. You did surgery on my son promised you would always be there for him after putting rods and screws in his back. Well that's only if you have money. You don't take his disability insurance no mass health . You only chose to take insurance that you can get the most money out of. SO SAD> best hospital but won't take the poor people. Thanks for lying to us. Kevin Lowe and upset MOM

Spine surgery was botched in 2003 by a Hartford orthopedic surgeon who was visibly shaken in our follow-up appointment. Dr. Yue at Yale-New Haven Hospital would not operate because of scar tissue. He would install a three vertebrae replacement unit 'that would make me three inches taller'. A unit failed and was withdrawn from the market. A Norwich surgeon suggested abdominal entry, long outdated. Dr Woodard successfully fused L3-L4-L5 in 2016. Really, Five Stars! Baptist meals/staff are great!

Dr Eric Woodard saved my life. After a year of agony 10 years of constant pain and many specialists who only provided serious surgical intervention Dr Eric Woodward correctly diagnosed me. He then got me in to see Dr. Geoffrey Van Flandern who performed arthtoscopy of hip and I woke up pain free. I can walk exercise and I just danced all night at my nieces wedding. I had an initial appointment with Dr Woodard in mid-October, he determined a microdiscectomy was the appropriate course for remedying my sciatica and was able to fit me in 20 days later. At a very high pain level before I went in to absolute relief walking out of surgery, Dr Woodard's expertise and skill was the reason I'm walking pain-free today. I'd recommend him and his office to anyone needing back-pain relief. Yes, the office is incredibly busy, but there's a very good reason for that!

I have tremendous confidence in dr Woodard. Had a previous surgery with him which was done exquisitely. And his longtime PA was wonderful. Am back for another surgery and by contrast the most frustrating experience with his office staff that I have ever had. No compassion, no timely responses, when they do call you back inadequate and incomplete responses. - blaming changes in support staff and absence of a medical fellow problems. Patients in pain just want respect and honesty. None here
I had two surgeries in 8 weeks because the first one did not work and I am still not fixed. His staff is the rudest and will never get back to you. I don't recommend going to him because the overall experience will be frustrating and pointless. I have never been treated more poorly by office workers. It took one week to get an assistant to call me back when I was having an emergency. Dr. Woodard himself will not talk to you. Only the day of surgery. Worst experience of my life.

The office is so obtuse and hard to deal with that I am giving up and finding another provider, despite my firm belief in Dr. Woodard as a neurosurgeon.
