After two visits to the ER for a large Parotid gland stone where Dr Kim was the consulting ENT I believe I should have been admitted, this is my first problem. I had to wait an additional two nights at home really suffering. I called first thing Monday morning to schedule an appointment. I was denied an appointment until the next day. I pleaded with the office to make an exception and that I was doing poorly and that I was instructed to make this appointment for that day by the ED department. No flexibility and I couldn't get an appointment anywhere else. I had already likely spent a lot on ER visits which were proving fruitless. No accomodation for my situation by the office. This is my second problem. After likely the worst night of my life in extreme pain I showed up at Dr. Kims office. I told the nurse that my BP was very high and I was doing poorly. My wife was with me and she is a physician who no longer practices. The nurse just said OK and didn't even take my blood pressure. Lack of precaution and documentation is my third problem. Dr. Kim came in with a resident. I had taken my mask off because the exam was to be done on my mouth. He kind of rudely told me to put my mask back on. He made introductions. He examined my wound commenting mostly to the resident. Afterwards he told me that he wanted to consult with his colleague about doing endoscopic surgery because he was concerned that if he removed it at this time scarring would occur and that could cause long term problems. After returning from consulting his colleague he said he was going to remove the stone now. I asked what about the permanent damage and scarring? He said you might have that anyway and I couldn't get surgery for 3 more days. He looked again at my mouth and I began to speak and he again rudely told me not to speak without a mask on. He was examining my mouth and I noticed that he wasn't even wearing an N95 mask himself. I think this speaks volumes about his lack of respect to patients if he is so concerned about COVID that he would rather berate patients about masks than taking extra precautions himself. Rudeness is my fourth problem. Dr. Kim said he would numb my mouth and remove the stone. I was quite scared as I had a very bad infection and in a lot of pain. He administered the numbing agent and didn't even wait 1 minute for it to start working before he had surgical tools in my salivary duct. The pain was amazing bad. He had no concern about my pain which is my fifth problem. I thought I would pass out. He removed the stone and said "that's it your done". I was out of it and reeling and my wife asked if there was follow up and he said just keep doing what you have been doing. This is my sixth problem no follow up after he told me I could have permanent damage from his procedure. I told him that I couldn't get up off the chair. He didn't seem to care and left the room. No one came to help me out or ask if I was OK. I could barely walk out of the office. On the way home I vomited and was on the verge of passing out. My seventh problem no one cared about my outcome or even if I was OK. Dr. Kim may be a skilled surgeon but he showed me zero compassion and treated me without respect or concern for me, my wellbeing or the outcome of his treatment. I gave him two stars because after about 36 hours my condition improved. I will be following up with another ENT. If you are looking for an ENT who shows he cares I would look elsewhere. Final note, I better not get charged for anesthesia as there was none. One of the worst Dr. visit I have experienced. Save your money, time, and most importantly your emotional despair and avoid this place all together. Here is my experience: I was referred to Dr. Edsel Kim at ENT west (The Oregon Clinic) for consultation on Sinus Congestion. After spending about 15 to 20 minutes in the exam room waiting (which is not unusual), Dr. Kim came in and spent about 10 minutes asking me questions and listening to my symptoms. Then he did a general exam of my head including ears, nose, oral, and neck which took about another 2-3 minutes. Then he preformed a “procedure” which entailed inserting a flexible nasal endoscopy about 2-3 cm (1/4 in) in my nostrils. This procedure took another 2 minutes or so. After his diagnosis he spent the next 10-15 minutes on why I should have a surgery to open my nasal airways. Here are my issues: First of all, going under the knife is Dr Kim’s first line of defense. He did not seek any alternatives to cure my condition. For example, he agrees that allergies could highly contribute to my condition, but did not bother to wait and perform an allergy test. He did not bother to look in and confirm with a cat scan or x-ray to see what else is contributing to my congestion. Also, from my experience; I don't have any problem breathing when I am not congested. So blasting open my nasal cavity did not make sense. I do understand that Dr Kim is a surgeon and that is how he makes the bulk of his income. But as a patient I still hope that my caregiver first and foremost “cares” and considers what is best for the patient rather than what is the most financially profitable option for them. Secondly, I was shocked when I received a bill for $1041 for my visit. $511.00 for the office visit and $530.00 for the 2 minutes “procedure”. (By the way, I was not informed that Dr. Kim was going to perform a $530 “procedure” and didn't know even know it was a procedure until I received the bill. To me it felt as simple as using a stethoscope as diagnostic tool). When I made the appointment, I was assured that the visit was covered by the insurance, in a way they were correct, the insurance covered $65.08 and the rest $975.92 is my responsibility. I had tried to find out the cost before my visit without much luck. Here comes my fault, I had assumed the consultation would cost $100 to $200 max. Now I have ended up with an almost $1000 dollars bill for a visit that I can summarize as an effort to sell me a surgery. The takeaway is that this office’s business practices seem wrong to me. I suggest you do your homework and thoroughly read the reviews. I wish I did! No wonder they have 2.5 stars in Yelp, and many unfavorable reviews all over the internet. Also if you decide to deal with them make sure you ask a lot of questions, get a quote before you visit, and don’t rely on them to check with your insurance what is covered and what is not. I hope this review saves you a lot of money, time, headache, and most importantly your health. In a way I am grateful they gave me plenty of warning signs not to trust them to cut open my body unnecessarily. One of the worst Dr. visit I have experienced. I had a terrible experience with Dr. Kim. My GP referred me to Dr. Kim because of my headaches. After a CT scan Dr. Kim told me that I had a nasal polyp that needs to be removed. I asked him if the surgery would involve nasal bone removal or not. I didn't want the polyp removal if any nasal bone removal were required. I even told him that in the past I rejected a nasal surgery which required bone removal. He told me that it would be just polyp removal. I thought it would be a simple polyp removal with no bone removal and no follow ups, so I scheduled the surgery. Dr. Kim never explained what will happen after the surgery. The process prior the surgery was very disorganized. Two days prior to the surgery they called and asked me to go for another CT scan. Until the evening prior to the surgery, I didn't know the time to be at the hospital for the surgery. On the day of surgery, I was wearing my gown and a lady came to get signature for the consent form. At that time, she told me that they are going to do sinus surgery with bone removal to remove the polyp. I was shocked and so disappointed. When Dr. Kim came, I confronted him that he told me before that it would be only polyp removal with no bone removal. He was rude to me and said no, it would be sinus surgery. Finally, while I felt that I had no other choice, I signed the consent and went under the surgery. After the surgery, I had terrible headaches; so, I called them. Another Dr helped me and told me that the headache is because of the gel Dr. Kim put into my sinus and that was part of the procedure. Dr. Kim never told me about the gel and that I had to have at least 4 costly office appointments after the surgery to remove the gel. I saw a bill sent to my insurance for over $85K just for the surgery, which costed me way over $1000 from my own pocket. Each office appointment after surgery was $190 out of my pocket. He just wanted to fill his own pocket. I regret why I trusted them and didn't get a second opinion. Now, couple of months later, I still have nasal pain. My breathing hasn't gotten better. Part of my upper jaw lost its senses that I was told that it might come back to normal after a year. I am so unhappy with what Dr. Kim has done to me. He just cares about his pocket. At the end, I figured out that my headaches were hormonal headaches and not related to my sinus. Make the story short: Your health is your wealth. Stay away from Dr. Kim. Not my idea of a great doctor. No empathy and not a great bedside manner. Will find another dictir to do my surgery.
I went in for a endoscopy to have my deviated septum diagnosed and it has been 2 1/2 months since I visited and have not gotten a call about my visit or a return visit call. Emails regarding my bill are sent constantly, this is poor business practice to charge someone $530 for a simple procedure and tell them nothing about it period. Amazing staff here all the way around. I appreciate you all and Dr. Kim did a great job with my surgery. Thank you thank you thank you
Dr Kim was quick to review my hospital CT scan & schedule the surgery I needed. He explained exactly what to expect & gave me a sense of complete trust & confidence in how everything would turn out. He was very kind & considerate. Highly recommend!
Dr kim was a second opinion for me as my first doctor was doing nothing but filling me with antibiotics. Within 10 minutes of looking at my sinuses and mapping out the strategy, I knew I had another great surgeon! He was a magician in cleaning out my sinuses and fixing a deviated septum. The day after surgery I didnât even feel like I had surgery. Never took a pain pill. I was blessed find Dr. Kim!!
Dr E. Kim and his team at Saint Vincent have been Phenomenal with my sinus surgery, care and follow up. Top notch ??
Although it was unintentional I had multiple post-operative complications that landed me in the ER twice after having a septoplasty with Dr. Kim. I am still suffering from these complications. When I tried to reach out to him for help to figure out how this happened he berated me over the phone and was completely unsympathetic and assisted me in no way to feel better. He did a good job on my nose but the side effects from complications really made the entire surgery not worth it. There are so many other surgeons out there that will give their patients more quality care and be involved in recovery unlike he was. Also don’t expect him to tell you about possible drug interactions, I had a very severe reaction between hydrocodone (he prescribed) and a medication that I have been taking for 15 years that he was aware of prior to surgery. When I confronted him about it he denied prescribing it. There are much more caring surgeons. Go with anybody else.
He did the transphenal orthoscopic surgery into my brain. He is super smart and did an amazing job. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Doctor Kim, I felt, was very thorough and knowledgeable. The allergy test he requested were done within a few days and I felt the results answered questions I’d had for a long time.
Fantastic results from deviated septum surgery. I can breath through my nose and my allergy symptoms are much better. My brother had the same problem and used a different doctor who did a different procedure with lesser results. Dr. Kim did it right!
I first saw Dr. Kim for a lump that I noticed on my neck. He did a very thorough exam and very confidently said it was just a salivary gland that was positioned low. I since went back for a consult for my deviated septum. After having two previous nasal endoscopies done, I was a little nervous about having another because of the discomfort. However Dr. Kim was extremely gentle and there was zero discomfort. I found him to be very patient while reading to him my list of questions - he is very easy to talk too!
I have been a patient of Dr. Kim’s for over 5 years. I was diagnosed with thyroid nodules that were found when I had an MRI of my cervical spine after a car accident. Dr. Kim was referred to me by my primary physician and Dr Kim is well known as being the top ENT in the Portland area for thyroid disorders. Him and his staff have taken great care to monitor my thyroid and the growth of the nodules with routine ultrasounds and needle biopsies. One of the nodules has continued to increase in size and I finally decided to have a partial thyroidectomy surgery to remove the left lobe of the thyroid. Yesterday morning I had the surgery procedure at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland performed by Dr. Kim. Everything went extremely well and I couldn’t be more pleased with the care I was given by Dr. Kim, the surgical staff, nurses and all staff who cared for me. I am extremely grateful to be a patient of Dr. Kim and have nothing but good things to say and I recommend him to others often. I have been a patient of Dr. Kim’s for over 5 years. I went to Dr. Kim first for a what ended up being a benign granuloma. I am glad I sought a second opinion as he wanted to perform a septoplasty, an expensive invasive procedure, to simply extract an obstruction. I declined this and sought a second opinion, the second doctor simply removed the granuloma. Dr. Kim is simply trying to line his pockets with expensive procedures. He insisted on a endoscopy that achieved nothing which resulted in a $500+ bill to me. Avoid this doctor at all costs, he is not serving your best interests. Dr. Kim did good work, but not for my best interest I feel. I went in for an appointment to have a cauterization done on my nose. Upon examining he immediately suggested a deviated septum adjustment surgery as a more long term solution. I declined because of the expense I assumed would be high. He very clearly stated that it wouldn't cost me anything out of pocket if the insurance would clear it first. A few days later he contacted me with with the news that the insurance had cleared the operation so we scheduled an appointment. A couple weeks after the operation I received a large bill in the sums a a few thousand dollars for other hospital expenses my insurance didn't cover. This is my fault for not knowing my insurance policy and not confirming everything with them first, but I am disappointed that I had the operation because I never would have agreed to the surgery for the amount that it ended up costing, and Dr. Kim certainly didn't mention the other expenses when I expressed this concern. Dr. Kim is one of the best ENT's in Portland. Very thorough and caring doctor and staff.
My sinuses feel great now. I have a rare bone disease in my sinuses, which is why I was referred to Dr. Kim. He knows about the disease, and what to do to monitor the problem. He decided what to do surgically to help me. I am very pleased with the results of my surgery. Dr. Kim is a very skilled surgeon.
Let me first say that I never leave reviews and especially don't want my medical issues being blasted out there publicly, but I have often thought of leaving a review for Dr. Kim because he was that good. I had a large lump in my cheek and spent a couple years being bounced around from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what it was. Every doctor I saw felt it, shrugged and said it was nothing to be concerned about and that I shouldn't need to see another doctor. Not a single one of them did any tests. None of them listened to my concerns. Even as the lump grew and started to cause pain, I couldn't get anyone to take my concerns seriously. At my first appointment with Dr. Kim, he sat down and talked to me about my experience and symptoms, and he *listened* to me. He had no idea what it was either, but he said he was going to figure it out. He asked if I'd had a biopsy yet. When I said no, he couldn't believe all of the doctors I had been to didn't think it necessary to do one. He did a biopsy on the spot, had me go through all the routine tests a lump should require, and within a few months he had successfully removed it without even leaving a scar on my face. It turned out to be a rare facial nerve tumor and absolutely was something I should have worried about. Every conversation I had with him throughout the experience was filled with concern and care. He couldn't promise me it wasn't cancer. He couldn't promise me that my facial nerve wouldn't be damaged in the surgery, but he did promise to take good care of me, and he did. It wasn't cancer. My facial nerve completely and quickly healed. The chronic pain is gone, and my quality of life improved dramatically. Dr. Kim was competent and trustworthy, and even though he didn't know what he was dealing with initially, he took good care of me and figured it out. I am thankful I found my way to Dr. Kim and would absolutely recommend him. I love his seriousness and how straight forward he was during my 18 yr old daughters oral cancer treatment. For those who can’t see that as a good thing,,, I’m sorry. You are passing up a great surgeon. Thanks Dr. Kim! ??
Doctor Kim was excellent in every area. I cannot imagine being treated by a more skilled, concerned, or competent surgeon.
Dr. Kim is very straight forward when he explains his findings. He dose this with a strong level of compassion. He is also extremely thorough. This became very evident when he ordered a CT scan to make sure that we were heading in the correct direction. Due to him being so thorough we have found a different issue that we are currently working through. Thank you Dr. Kim for being who you are.

Over-confident and arrogant. Botched surgery. Can't explain details because not allowed enough characters here. Much worse 6 months after surgery, but he had an excuse for every problem that was something unrelated to his surgery, which is when all the problems started. Horrible doctor, don't use. Don't believe him when he tells you he can fix it! No compassion, doesn't listen.
Dr. Kim is a great doctor. Compassionate and highly skilled. Dr. Kim was able to repair a leak in my sinuses that other ENT were unwilling to tackle. I am public evidence of Dr. Kim's skill. Went to see Dr. Kim for a possible deviated septum. He diagnosed that it was deviated in two places. We decided on surgery and I opted for some minor cosmetic changes to my nose at the same time. Dr. Kim restored my ability to breathe by fixing the septum and did an amazing job in giving me a more aesthetically appealing nose while remaining very natural looking. He reassured me throughout the experience and I was so pleased with the end result. Thank you Dr. Kim!

Dr. Kim is one of the nicest and most dexterous doctors ever I have met. He did parathyroid adenoma removal surgery for my wife a few weeks ago. He tried to make his diagnosis as perfect as possible and to make a patient feeling comfortable. The surgery was very successful. Owing to his trustworthy skills, my wife has got better and better, and her surgery scar is very minimal and unnoticeable as he explained twice before the surgery. I strongly recommend him for the surgery!!!!

I've had 2 surgeries done by Dr. Kim in the last two years one being fixing a deviated septum and the other being a tonsillectomy. Both surgeries he got me in and out and made sure I was comfortable during the appointments and prior to surgery. My post op appointments were also done very well.

Came to him for second opinion after another ENT suggested surgery after diagnosing me with growth and bone issues in sinus. Dr Kim saw no such symptoms, and informed me that surgery would at most offer me 5% relief and entail significant risk. He is now treating me for allergies that the other doctor missed. I am very pleased with his service, and honesty. Highly recommended.

Amazing surgeon. He is a great regular doctor for my chronic ear issues. Was always able to answer my questions, if I didn't understand something. Long waits in the waiting room if it was a surgery day. Make sure to get your clinical appointments on a non-surgery day, if it is an option.
Wait time each visit less than 10 minutes. He was very thorough and did a great job and was personable.

Dr. Kim was our second opinion. It was obtained after we were very satisfied with our first opinion, but the stakes were too high to be complacent. The protocol he suggested and the surgery he performed was different from what was suggested by the first qualified doctor. Upon intense research, we found that our decision to proceed with Dr. Kim was a lifesaving one.
I was referred to Dr. Kim. I had one visit and two telephone conversations with him. The visit was less than compassionate. He wanted to scope my nose and appeared annoyed at my reluctance. I am seeking alternative care and he isn't familiar with the type I am pursuing but is very quick to tell me how Steve Jobs tried alternative treatment. I felt as though he was attempting to scare me into making a decision. I am going to a new doctor, one who listens and helps make decisions.
Dr Kim didn't know the difference between major body parts, He made me wait forever and presented, with a dry mouth, enlarged pupils and kept blinking his eyes, he appeared sick or to be on some type of drugs that interfered with his performance. His communication skills, especially listening skills, I'd rate him on a scale of one to ten, a "two". He came recommended so I was expecting better. I would never recommend him to anybody. Do yourself a favor, find someone with more experience.

Lack of compassion Does not answer questions Feel rushed during follow-up consultations. First one was okay. He is probably a good surgeon and doctor, no complains there but his approach made me never want to go back.
The waiting was ridiculous and the staff seems to think it is OK. While I don't expect it to be a McDonalds drive-thru I do expect them to RESPECT my TIME as I respect theirs. I was on time for my appt. If the staff is to be at work at 8AM and shows up 9AM everyday does not make for a good practice. Try showing up for a flight an hour late... yeah I hope I'm making myself clear...
He did sinus surgery for me. He was very thorough and had good bedside manner. He was very knowledgable and efficient. I would recommend him to any friend.
Great surgeon and a great person. Very intelligent, knowledgable, and kind. Could not be happier with my results. I was told he was talented by a friend who is a surgeon, would 100% recommend
