About Douglas J Fox JR.
Reviews for Douglas J Fox JR.
Dr Fox is a very skilled and caring neurosurgeon. Having back pain most of my adult life with scoliosis, stenosis, and previous surgeries, Dr Fox recommended a T10-sacrum fusion and fixation. A long recovery and physical therapy, but definitely the best choice for me. I am now free of the back pain and looking forward to an active future. So grateful for his skilled care.
My son had neuro surgery in Lubbock after a work related accident. The surgery was a complete failure. After five months I researched and found Dr. Douglas Fox and his second surgery was performed in July of 2021. I could not believe how quickly he not only recovered but the surgery was a success. Dr. Fox did not have much to work with when my son got to his office. I cannot tell you how many people I have referred to Dr. Fox. He is an excellent surgeon and he has an excellent staff. Dr Fox did a spinal fusion for my broke back in March of 2019 and I was still having problems so he went back in with a cage and bigger screws in March of 2020 and it has made a big difference and I haven't heeled all the way yet so it can only get better. I underwent major surgery on my neck two weeks ago (ACDF). It had to be done because of years of unrelenting pain, stenosis and pinched nerves. The numbness and tingling in my arms and hands was progressing quickly. I was terrified about having to face this surgery. Terrified. Dr. Fox is one of the most compassionate doctors I have ever encountered. He allayed my fears by patiently answering all of my many questions in clear and concise terms so that I could make the best informed decision. I can't believe I'm doing this well just two-weeks post-op. The sharp pain I had to the right, lateral area of my neck for almost a decade is GONE. Praise the Lord! Though I am experiencing pain (obviously to be expected following surgery), it is of a different quality --just surgical pain and muscle cramping, which is part of the healing /recovery process. Dr. Fox and his PA were compassionate in adjusting my pain medications for better pain control. Orders were put in quickly. Dr. Fox's physician assistant, Austin PA-C, is an excellent clinician who truly cares for his patients also. They both visited me in the hospital when I had to go back for pain control. I am a nurse practitioner, am quite discerning, and have high expectations for medical professionals. Dr. Fox and his team are world-class. Additionally, the nurses, anesthesiologist, and CRNA at Baylor Scott and White were all outstanding in their kind and respectful approach before and after the operation. Totally at the top of their game. I will forever be grateful. Dr. Fox's surgical skills are absolutely amazing. I have a new lease on life. I underwent major surgery on my neck two weeks ago (ACDF). We highly recommend NeuroTexas and in particular Dr. Fox and his staff. Although we had a wait a couple of months for an appointment, it was well worth it. Six months ago, Dr. Fox performed a revision multilevel lumbar fusion on my husband who previously had 3 other lumbar surgeries. Other surgeons we interviewed did not have the expertise that Dr. Fox did. He was kind, patient, and answered all of our questions as well as identifying another medical issue and providing an excellent referral. Post-surgery, Dulce, his assistant was quick to respond to any and all concerns and questions. We live in San Antonio, but traveled to Austin to have the surgery and were also happy with the hospital their group uses for surgeries. Dr Fox was knowledgeable, courteous, and spent time to answer our questions. I could tell He really cares about his job. Dr Fox is incredible!
Since my last review, I have seen Dr. Fox again. This time, he answered all of my questions and we discussed a surgical alternative. I will have another X-ray which will help him determine if the surgical alternative is feasible or not. I. Rey much appreciate Dr. Fox and his staff. They were all very kind and caring.
Dr Fox is a wonderful surgeon who, after looking at other options and thoroughly investigating our options, performed spinal surgery on L2, L3, L4 and L5 inserting rods and screws as well as a cage to support one vertebrae. I am one year later pain free and so glad I had it done in spite of the post surgical pain and extensive rehabilitation. But I am most glad I chose Dr Fox as my surgeon because of his competence, caring and easy open manner and his wonderful staff and assistants. I always recommend Dr Fox to anyone with spine or nerve problems! He is the best.
I see many have had a good experience and I'm happy for you. My 2 surgeries were in January of this year both in the same day. This 1st surgery crippled my left leg and my right foot that precious to the surgery DID NOT have that problem. After months of horrific pain and being unable to walk and was I was confined to a walker for very short distance or a wheel chair for longer distances. Be advised by my pain management to get the advise from another doctor we decided to do that. The first doctor we saw said too much surgery was done and said he COULD NOT FIX my problems. He gave the name of a doctor that might be able to repair the botched surgeries Dr. Fox had preformed. When I saw him he said after looking at her radiology that he would need some time and more radiology to be able to make a decision. After several weeks he said he thought he might be able to help so in June of this year and over 8 hours of surgery and a prospect of a year are more I have made good strides in regaining my life, NO THANKS AT ALL TO DOCTOR FOX. P,LEASE , TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK FOR ANOTHER DOCTOR IF YOUR ARE CONSIDERING DOCTOR FOX AND BAYLOR SCOTT AND WHITE LAKEWAY. I have been seeing Dr. Fox for my brain issue for 7 years. Cannot even image putting my care in another neurosurgeons care.
Completed very complicated back surgery with results as he had prepared me for. Dr Fox is very easy to talk to and he explains the surgery very well.
Dr. Fox and his staff were totally awesome! Surgery went really well and I feel so much better with a lot less pain. They were all very nice and courteous. I would recommend them to anyone.
Dr. Fox at NeuroTexas is a miracle worker. First off... his clinic is sparkling clean. The staff is kind and helpful and exuberant. I felt very much at home through the whole process, pre-op through post-op. More importantly... I'm completely pain-free now. I didn't think that was possible. I went from not being able to jump or extend my legs to, shortly after the op, burpees and light yoga. Totally life-changing. Obviously the folks who had bad results from their spine surgeries did not have Dr. Fox as their surgeon. I was having severe back pain which radiated all down my left leg. Great bedside manor, is up to date in the latest surgical interventions I had an appointment with another neurosurgeon who wanted to put me in a neck brace for 6 weeks after the surgery. Dr Fox used advanced hardware that did not require the brace. All of Dr. Fox’s staff and PA are knowledgeable and deliver quality care. The surgery he performed on me was 100% successful.
I saw Dr. Fox after a physiatrist / pain management doctor essentially gave up on me after 2 failed spinal steroid injections & said I was not a surgical candidate because I had too many problems at multiple intervertebral levels, then Rx’d me an antidepressant (SNRI) medication for pain. Ugh! My physical therapist said, “That’s crazy! Go see Dr. Fox and no one but Dr. Fox.” I did, & what a relief! Dr. Fox is very approachable, validating, funny & empathetic with such a calming demeanor that immediately puts you at ease. He said he could indeed help me surgically & recently did a 3 level ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy & fusion) on me. Though there was post-op surgical pain, amazingly, most of the neck, shoulders, & pinched nerve pain was immediately gone. I say “most” pain is gone because 2 vertebrae higher up are still problematic but couldn’t be accessed in the ACDF. So, may need a PM doc to try steroid injections again. If PCDF is warranted, I’ll definitely go back to Dr. Fox :)

I’m so grateful for Dr Douglas Fox, he performed fusion surgery on my L4 and L5 and I’m finally feeling like myself again. I suffered from pain in my lower back and down my legs to where I couldn’t walk some days; he ordered an MRI in Early December and immediately discovered that I needed to have this surgery (December 28, 2017) because all the previous treatments that another doctor had ordered for me were a waste of time and money those treatments were never going to repair my spinal stenosis. Thank you Dr Douglas Fox and STAFF for the amazing care you provided me!! I highly recommend this doctor to all my friends and family who suffer from back pain. Dr. Fox is a true miracle; previously, I had 4 uncommon vertebrate fractures and could not walk, stand, sit... pretty much any daily activity without EXTREME PAIN for 2.5 yrs. Careless staff, booked me for an appointment with Dr. Fox almost a month before and called me the day before the appointment to tell me that he can’t see me because he is a surgeon!!! Amazing doctor and staff. Thank you Dr Fox and Nurse Jenna Deer. I really don't jnow where I would be right now without you. Amazing surgeon, bedside manner and you can tell they really care about you.
By FAR the best Dr. Texas has! This world needs more Dr's like him. For the last 10 years he has gone over and beyond to help me and major spinal lumbar issues. I wouldn't have or trust any other Dr. Than Dr Fox.snd his neuroTexas associate... And the staff is beyond the best!
I was referred to Dr. Fox from a friend, and once I found out he completed his medical degree from Washington University-St. Louis I knew I was in good hands. Dr. Fox was not quick to rush into surgery with my condition. Back surgery has always been something I feared; however, Dr. Fox was extremely thorough explaining what I needed going forward. During my hospital stay, he came by very LATE the night of the surgery to check on me, and the following 3 days upon my release. Dr. Fox is one of the most caring doctors I have encountered. In addition, his assistant Jennifer goes above and beyond her duties maintaining contact via email or follow-up phone calls despite her busy schedule at the office. Dr. Fox is the absolute greatest. I’m 26 years old and have been dealing with horrible back pain since I was 14. I had been to numerous neurosurgeons, chiropractors, physical therapists, and pain management facilities in 12 years to try and fix the problem. They all didn’t believe how much pain I was in, therefore, not much help and relief was given. I was referred to Dr. Fox by my boss and co-workers. I prepared all of my 12 years of medical records for our visit. Dr. Fox took 1 look at my most recent MRI and knew exactly what to do. Within one month (due to the holidays) I was scheduled in for surgery. I cannot tell you how much relief I have had. I am starting to feel like my old self again! After 10+ years of increasing back, leg and foot pain, I've seen several specialists in Austin. None were able to correctly diagnosis or treat the pain and numbness. Dr. Fox ordered a test which I'd never had (mylogram) and there it was! He showed me the films, explained the issue, discussed the options, and patiently answered all my questions. He explained what he could and could not do. He suggested I consider all, do my own research, and let him know my decision. After all, a TLIF fusion is one large and long healing surgery, often 1-2 years. I decided to schedule the fusion. His office handled everything with no other calls to me. Dr. Fox performed a wonderful surgery. It was not as bad as I had feared, or read about. I was able quit all postsurgical pain medication in about 8 days. I was surprised and amazed at the immediate improvement. I walked further the day after surgery, than I had for weeks prior! Jenna, Dr. Fox's nurse and right hand woman, is simply awesome! She responds very quickly to emails with problems, concerns or just simply questions. She is terrific. All my appointments were on time, despite him taking as much time as needed, which I highly appreciate. The entire office staff is friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Should I ever need another surgery, I will return to Dr. Fox. I feel he is very honest about what is repairable and by how much. He doesn't pressure, but provides information. I believe him to be truthful, intelligent, well trained, and highly skilled...plus he has a great sense of humor! I highly valued his honesty with me. I would encourage anyone who needs a neurosurgeon to at least go consult with him. It is worth your time. P. S. Don't confuse this Dr. Fox with the one in Round Rock, who is also a neurosurgeon. After suffering for months with my lower back, I went to my regular doctor who had me take a MRI that showed I had spinal stenosis. I was given 3 options, lower back surgery being the last option. Outstanding surgeon. Very personable and caring. Dr Fox spends time listening and takes as much time as you need to ask questions. I highly recommend him and his staff.
I am a demanding patient. I do my own research, have many questions and insist on being very involved in my care. I require a doctor that is not only top in class, but must also be willing to discuss my research, answer my questions and involve me in the decision process by providing me the pro''s and con''s then allowing me to decide what is best for me. Dr Fox is all of that and so much more. He also answered all my husbands questions with the same respect and patience. I had been suffering symptoms for over a year when I asked for a new doctor from my PCP; when we met with Dr Fox, he not only spent almost an hour answering our questions, he gave us paths to move forward and is managing all of my issues as a single case. Something we had not been able to find. No matter the skill of a doctor, if the staff he is surrounded with are not of the same quality, then your care is hampered. Jenny Deer and her staff are extremely responsive, very professional and keep the patient''s care at the the forefront of their interactions. When I needed questions answered...I truly received 1 hour turnarounds (even after business hours), received needed documentation within a day and had very pleasant experience getting set-up for the surgery. This truly is theasy A Team and I HIGHLY recommend them! I am a demanding patient. I do my own research, have many questions and insist on being very involved in my care. Dr Fox has performed surgery on me twice now. Five years ago I needed surgery on my neck and a new disk and plates..Last week he operated on my herniated disk L2-L3. In both cases I had great care before, during and after the surgeries. The symptoms before the surgery stopped immediately and no pain pills were required. Dr Fox, Jenna , Tammy and Traci were all very friendly, helpful and professional. In the case of my neck he was a 2nd opinion recommended by a nurse. Another surgeon was ready to operate with an mri that didn't show much. Dr Fox insisted on a myleogram because of the unsual symptons and the mri results being inconclusive. The myleogram pinpointed the issue that only showed up when my head was in motion, but then set up symptoms that continued long after. Without that test it would have been exploratory surgery, but Dr Fox nailed it. I had had problems for 3 years, seen many doctors and was thrilled with the results. Long story short over the past 5 to 6 years I need to have three discs replaced in my neck. The surgery was performed by an orthopedic back surgeon. After the third removal my pain continued to persist. The surgeon I was working with at the time said it was should related and advised PT. Since I had been through this enough by now to know that was highly unlikely I sought out a second opinion. Fast forward about 9 months I started seeking out a second opintion and a family friend recommended Dr. Fox so I called and made an appointment with him. Right from the start I felt extremely comfortable with Dr. Fox. His bed side manner was great and I felt like he really took his time to examine me thoroughly . The issue I was having was my fusion was not healing the way it should. He explained that things like this will heal over time, but since my pain levels were so severe he felt surgery would help. After my surgery the pain was gone for the most part and slowly over the next couple of months the pain completely disappeared. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Fox and his assistant Jenna. What is really nice is I am able to handle 90% of what I need from them via email which is very nice and prevents taking unnecessary time off work. Also his assistant Jenna is very responsive. Dr. Fox is conservative with treatment, patient, very knowledgeable, and never condescending. He didn’t push me to do anything, just gave me the facts of what could happen with all the various options. Due to the severity and locations of the ruptures I had to get surgery. I am so glad I did, I had forgotten what life was like without severe back pain. All the nurses were commenting on how good the incision looked, now 7 years later, you can hardly see the scar. Just this year my neck gave out on me. The neck issues were a result of the same accident and I am so fortunate Dr. Fox was able to treat me. I was home visiting after moving to Europe, and which complicated my situation, but luckily with his amazing staff, they were able to work through all the red tape and complications of global insurance to get the care I urgently needed. I appreciate Dr. Fox so much I even recommended my mother to see him, and she hates nearly every doctor she has ever met. She too appreciates Dr. Fox’s superb time management, wonderful office staff and the level of care he and his team can provide. Dr. Fox is a godsend. First I want to clarify that I am no relative of Dr. Fox, a common name. I have been extremely satisfied with Dr. Douglas Fox & his office staff. I had a back injury which required surgery and I chose Dr. Fox as my surgeon. I actually was able to return home the same day of my surgery in better condition than when I arrived at the hospital, no more sciatica. His hospital team was outstanding. Everyone has been kind & obviously skilled in what they do. Dr. Fox is an exemplary neurosurgeon.

Dr Fox told us my husband had a inoperable brain tumor and if they operated he would never be the same and it would not change the outcome...4-11 months average.. we wanted to go to MD Anderson but he told us we would not get any better care there than they would give. We were so distraught we drank the koolaide, afraid if we didn't do the biopsy the next morning we would lose him. After he did the biopsy I began to research and found that the tumor should always be resected before chemo and radiation. I was puzzled why this had not happened at all. We decided to seek opinions at Mass General at Harvard and Sloan Kettering in New York. When we got to New York the chair of neurosurgery looked at us and said he could get it all...we were shocked. By this time my husband was blacking out and close to death, all because we took this doctor at his word. They did emergency surgery and we are happy to say they did get it all and he has absolutely no neuro damage. Instead of admitting he was not qualified to handle this and it was not his specialty, he set my husband up to die within 90 days. Thank God we did not trust his opinion and searched elsewhere. Now with the vaccine and chemo he is on, he has the opportunity to join the 5-10Yr plus group, with the correct medical treatment. My husband should have had the tumor removed, then radiation for any residual, and chemo. He had the radiation which accomplished nothing and it had grown a cm, during this waste of time. I am writing this because I do not want this to happen to anyone else. It is gross negligence and we thank God every day that we found where we needed to be, in time. The survival rate is not good but I truly believe after meeting numerous folks with this same story, that if a non-qualified doctor does not recommend a patient go to a cancer center that specializes in brain tumors, those poor people just wait to die and the statistic continues to be grim. It is heartbreaking because not everyone can fly to Boston and New York for opinions. I hope this helps to protect another loved one in your family. Get other opinions and do not be intimidated by the doctor. The professionals we met with at the cancer centers all said you should get numerous opinions and never let a doctor make you feel guilty for doing so. A good doctor wants the best for the patient...it is not about ego or money.
