I do not recommend Dr. Smith because On June 14, 2019, I had a second surgery with Dr. Smith in L3, I injured my nerve root and since then I have not been able to walk. At the hospital after the surgery, they tried to make me walk and my left leg did not respond, I had a ball next to my knee and two wounds on my cheeks oozing fluid from them, for which they did not give me any explanation and it was never Dr. Smith came to see me and I was released. I was never able to support my left leg, fifteen days later I went to see Dr. Smith and I explained to him about my leg and he told me that it was normal, that I had to walk a lot and not to use the walker. I didn't know what was happening to me. Later I spoke to the doctor's nurse and I told her that I was still the same with the ball in my knee and she told me that Dr. Smith did not see that, that she should go to my primary doctor and I told her that this is how I had come out of surgery and he ignored me, my left leg is skinny because I lost the muscle and my whole body has already deteriorated because I can no longer walk, I was a very active person and my life stopped and ended, I am sunk in a serious depression, I don't want to live anymore. I went to several doctors so they could tell me what was happening to me and none of them told me anything, they sent me to do studies, which I had to translate and interpret and that was how I found out what I had, that Dr. Smith hurt me in the surgery, if at least he would have told me what happened and helped me recover, but it was not like that. I went to Doctor John Penning, he sent me to do an EMG, I went for the result and he told me it was weird and he sent me to Dr. Lovato, then to Dr. Lanzy and I went to various pain specialists. It is sad to see that most doctors have no compassion for patients, to date I have not been able to find any honest and compassionate doctors here in El Paso, much less therapists who just take money from health insurance, just like clinics for the pain. Fui con varios médicos para que me dijeran lo que me estaba pasando y ninguno me dijo nada, me mandaron a hacer estudios, los cuales yo tuve que traducir e interpretar y fue como supe lo que yo tenía, que me lastimo el doctor Smith en la cirugía, si por lo menos el me hubiera dicho lo que pasó y me hubiera ayudado a recuperar, pero no fue asi. Fui con el Doctor John Penning me mandó a hacer un EMG, fui por el resultado y me dijo que estaba raro y me mandó con el doctor Lovato, despue con el doctor Lanzy y fui con varios médicos especialistas para el dolor. Es triste ver que la mayoría de los médicos no tienen compasión por los pacientes, a la fecha no he podido encontrar aquí en El Paso ningún médico honesto y compasivo, mucho menos terapeutas que nada más sacan dinero a los seguros médicos, igual las clínicas para el dolor.

I was discharged from the hospital, and they sent me to this Doctor and said that I need to have my follow-up within 3 to 5 days. But the lady in the phone says that she doesn't care how bad my pain was this Doctor will see me in 3 months. She was so rude and said that this Doctor Dean Smith will not care how bad my pain is. They never oferred me to be place on the waiting list in case of cancelations.

i first saw doctor smith in 2009, a whole 13 years ago. i had minimally invasive surgery that has kept me active in sports and allowed me to live a healthy life. i came back for a check up and received a deailed explanation on the current state of my back. i will allways be greatful for the service i received from dr smith.

I just needed to know what my MRI results mean and they couldn’t help me, they wasted my time and the receptionist thinks she owns the place, is condescending and lacks customer service.

Dr Smith did back surgery on me in December, 2020. I continued to have severe pain for many months. I asked him to do an x-Ray to see what was going on. It showed one of the screws he put in my Lumbar Spine had gone into the Central Spinal Canal. I said that didn’t look right. He responded “Oh, it’s nothing!” Also, His office help are very hateful and rude. They lied several times about serious matters. I told Dr Smith about this but he was not concerned. My pain became worse so I made an appointment with the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and learned the screws in my back were loose, hitting many nerves, and more importantly, there was a screw going into my Central Spinal Canal which had been causing excruciating pain. In addition. I had severe Levoscoliosis, in the Lumbar Spine which Dr Smith never addressed or even mentioned. I was nervous due to reading these reviews. I experienced a very pleasant first visit. I have not had a treatment yet as we are doing imaging however I felt a need to share how much I feel hopeful today. I used their online zocdoc service to book my appointment online and to fill out the medical forms that they had listed so that I would not have to complete them the day of my appointment. I called this morning to confirm my appointment for next week and was told that they did not have my appointment becasue their online service does not communicate to their office. I also asked if they had my forms and they stated that they did not have anything on file because the online service does not send them any forms. I mentioned to the receptionist that it makes no sense to have the online booking service available if they are not going to schedule those appointments. If this service is not available then take it off of your website. It is still available till this day. I had taken time off of work for this appointment that apparently never got scheduled. Excellent experience with Dr. Smith and his office staff, especially Marisol. Dr. Smith took a lot of time at my initial consultation and before my surgery to listen to me, explain my MRI, explain in great detail the recommended procedure and answered all of my questions. His bedside manner was the best I’ve experienced in El Paso. I saw 4 doctors before settling on Dr. Smith and I feel I definitely made the right informed choice. My primary doctor also shared that Dr. Smith is “very good and has been doing this a long time”. That meant a lot and put my worries at ease. The preregistration nurse at the hospital also told me Dr. Smith takes his time and is a sweet man. She said “you’re gonna love him.” Marisol worked tirelessly with my insurance and got everything taken care of with only kindness shown to me. Dr. Smith did an ACDF at the C5, 6, and 7 area. I was extremely nervous about doing it, especially with Covid being active. I texted him with a lot of questions, before and after the surgery; he always answered. I am so happy I got it done. The intense and constant pain I had in my neck is gone, the pain in my arm is almost gone and getting better every day. Two months after the surgery, I am moving extremely well and active. I had many different people in the medical profession ask me who did my surgery and everytime they heard it was Dr. Smith, they would say he's the best in El Paso. I do agree. Seeing the X- Ray of the neck 2 months later, I am amazed at how clean it looks. He is a very nice man, very easy to talk to. I will say... this rating is for him. I would not rate his staff the same. They are competent but not all of them are friendly and they will only do what is needed. However, I was there for the doctor and won't harp on that. I had major surgery 2 weeks ago had a disc replacement in my neck my C5 and C6 . I was in constant pain. I hate drinking pain medication but I was in bad shape. 2 weeks into my surgery I feel great all pain gone just dealing with surgery healing. He was so involved in everything any questions I had I was able to get a hold of him right away I have never dealt with a doctor who was so involved and cared. After suffering 8 months bed with me trying to go the route of avoiding surgery using steroid shots instead dr. Dean Smith swiftly took me under his wing and was gracious enough to schedule me an appointment Within 7 Days of my initial consultation for surgery. I was wheeled in to the operating room but was successfully capable of using a walker to exit the hospital upon same day surgery with Dr Dean Smith! Yes his bedside manner has some people guessing. I find it quite refreshing to have a doctor who has some sarcastic sarcasm and bedside manner. He's well worth the wait. I went to see Dr Dean Smith after a friend told me he was very good. I had been suffering with a nerve impingement lower back since 2015. I had tried ibuprofen, Tylenol, ice packs alternating with heating pad, chiropractors, TENS unit with no relief! I had enough pain! I made appointment and have not regretted it. The office staff is rude and inconsiderate of patients. My mom was referred by her primary because of back and leg issues. We came into appointment and brought CD of MRI and report only for lady at window to tell us we will have to send you to get an MRI my mom explain I just had one done. The lady asked how long ago my told her she then said oh well they gave you the wrong one you will have to get the recent one. My mom then asked but if I go and get the correct one and the report and bring it will I still be seen or do I have to reschedule an appointment she was told no if you bring it we will still see you for your appointment today. We return with correct CD and report 15 minutes after and waited and waited and waited and hour and half later my mom said is it going to be long before I'm seen she was then told you are considered a walk in and you will have to wait we will call you when we can. First her appointment was at 10:30am she was made to wait and she is diabetic and didn't bring any snacks since she was told her appointment would be honored for that day. Second they have her sitting on those awful chairs when she has back issues and shouldn't be sitting or standing for more than 30 minutes at a time. To think this is a spine center the chairs are hard and uncomfortable. My mom was hurting and those chairs just made it worst. She was dizzy and it's way past lunch time when they finally called her in. Then you could feel the tension from his staff as the took copay and put her in a room. We left the door open as my mom gets anxious and one girl came and said the doctor will be right with you then closed the door. This Dr is dishonest stay away and his wife who seems to be the Office Manager is so full of herself. She is rude. He first authorized surgery for my wife and had us fight our insurance for approval which took months of our time. Then when we won the appeal against our insurance, he changed he decided he would not perform the procedure after all. He said my wife needs physical therapy, which she tried but was injured further by therapists. He has a problem with me because I won’t let his wife and staff disrespect my wife. What doctor would insist in you going for physical therapy after it is documented that it causes her severe pain. My wife then called his office and asked about another affliction that is apparent in the most resent MRI that he requested and his staff stated that my wife and her family (more than likely meaning me) are not welcomed at their practice. We will be reporting them to Texas Medical Board and Medicare. Doctors can’t discharge a patient if it will result in a medical condition worsening before you find another doctor, or will result in another medical condition. My wife went to see another doctor and that doctor called Smith and he will not treat my wife now until she goes through physical therapy. Therefor that doctor is going off Doctor Dean Smith’s advise. Another medical condition was found in Dr Dean Smith’s requested MRI and he refuses the look into it. I had surgery with Dr Dean Smith, I was never seen by him or his staff at the hospital. I was discharged with fluid in my lungs. They had to remove the fluid from my lungs twice. I was shocked by how his wife is more concerned about her trips during patient visit to their office. I have followed up with other good surgeons and they advised me the growth on my back is still there the same size and shape as what he claims he removed. A patient should never have to suffer like this at the hands of any doctor. My 2 daughters are RN and feedback hear from his patients and his bedside manners are not good. Please be very careful when choosing him to do any surgery. My pulmonologist had to contact him and tell him you need to come see your patient. I was admitted 2 more times in hospital after surgery. Like I mentioned my growth is still there and have severe pain. Other doctors ask me what did he remove? I am reporting to review boards i paid for all my records to be given to me and drs notes. I give him no stars, first he scheduled surgery because of my mri results then my insurance needed more documentation of my condition I sent that in and went all the way to OPM “ he didn’t even know who that was” I had a emg trust showed my nerve wasn’t dyeing but had a muscle problem I went back to see him and he said because the emg was negative he won’t do the surgery. Even though I was told by 2 doctors it only will be positive if the nerve is dead. He can help me even though he is a surgeon and can’t think of anything else we could do he said see you in 6 months let’s hope I don’t get worse. Dr. Smith was very thorough with a procedure that turned out to be much more involved than originally planned. He took good care of me when the hospital made mistakes after my procedure. Everything that Dr. Smith has done for me has been amazing. Don't believe the ratings with no comment. They are B.S
