On August 23rd i had my neck fusion preformed by dr david l kaufmann. Dr Kaufman and his staff deserve 10 stars . Very disappointed. First let me say the office staff and particularly the nurse were fantastic. I’ve had scoliosis my whole life and my body is disformed (curved bulging spine, uneven hips and a twisted rib cage). Ive recently lost the ability to stand or walk for longer than 30 minutes without tingling and numbness up my spine and severe pain in my back and hip. The doctor was useless. I was prepared for a drab personality but not to have my pain and fears completely dismissed by him. Like the other reviews he was quick to get out of the room. He told me I don’t know why you are in any new pain your x rays from 2009 look the same as your new ones. Without having anything else to say he probably only ordered me an MRI because of the look in my eyes was complete disbelief and disgust and he needed something to say. Pushed on my legs and said I still have good strength. Never looked at my body or back or offered me any education let alone comfort for my concerns with my current pain and future mobility. As he was rushing out the door the nurse had to ask him if he wanted to recommend aqua therapy because that’s what they normally do and he said sure if you want and left. I can’t stress enough how bad it is for a professional let alone a common person to dismiss someone who is in pain. I will be getting the MRI but won’t be seeing him again. Excellent. He listened intently, reviewed my scans, let me verbalize my concerns and spent quite a long time with me. I was very much impressed with him and his nurse Mary Ellen.

Set a virtual appointment to see Dr. David L Kaufmann at 12:00pm. I waited until 12:40pm and he never showed up. Dissatisfied.

Dr Kaufman and his staff are wonderful! They made me feel safe, as if I were a member of their family... surgery went well!

I went to Mercy hospital by ambulance earlier this month after a 9 month long back issue peaked at my ultimate pain threshold that left me almost screaming in pain. I arrived to Mercy at 8p on a Saturday. By Monday afternoon I had surgery and when I woke up, the pain that was caused by a badly herniated disc that sent shocking nerve pain down my leg to my foot, was completely gone. I only had post surgery pain at the site of the incision. I couldn't believe it. I was up walking 2 days later. I am still healing, but I am able to walk pretty easily and the sciatica problems that affected me constantly, are gone. One of the nurses or doctors told me that it was best for me to go home because of increased infection risk the longer I stayed in the hospital. I didn't believe him, but going home on Wednesday wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The incision left a relatively small scar, the staples were perfectly done, and have already been taken out. The nurses and staff were absolutely wonderful too. I felt listened to, and never went without their attention when it was needed. Dr. Kaufmann seemed like a pretty dead pan kinda guy, but I expect people who can open my back and repair a herniated disc in my spine, to be a little different socially. I mean can you even imagine being able to do that!? I am so grateful. I had been in pain for so long. And that night was beyond anything I ever experienced. So, so grateful. Unfortunately, I attempted to contact this office following an MRI and multiple messages were completely ignored. If this message system is ignored consistently as it has been this should be closed as an option since it truly is medical negligence . Very disappointed

In 2016 Dr. Kaufman performed tennis elbow surgery and carpel tunnel release on my hand and arm. He was excellent and now so am I.

Dr. Kaufmann was thoughtful and attentive when he reviewed the xrays of my spine and recommended a course of action that I was comfortable with. I felt confident in his abilities.

The experience I had visiting the Mercy office for my acute spine issue was top notch and I remain grateful for the exceptional care & thoughtfulness provided to me by the Neurosurgeon. A conservative & methodical surgeon is worth their weight in gold. I read all the reviews and think the 1 star reviews reflect on the writers frustrations with their medical issues and having unrealistic expectations. Not every one is a surgical candidate. Being in the medical field myself I have a strong understanding of how different specialty offices function and Dr. Kaufmann deserves 5 star review. BTW of course UPMC surgeons look/interpret at the actual films (CTs MRIs) before they see the patients (they are on the computer) and they do not rely on the radiologic report to determine if a surgery will be of benefit to the patient. If there is not an abnormality on the images that would benefit from surgery then appointment will be “5 minutes long” they are surgeons. Dr Kaufman as a unique personality but he treated me with respect and spent some time explaining things to me. He also understood that my injury is serious and took his time to write a report on my condition for insurance reasons. Now I do not know what type of surgeon he his since I have not had surgery yet. He was in the room for 5 minutes. Didn’t seem to listen of the pain I’m in. He didn’t feel my neck for the swelling Or location. Sent me for MRI. I went back for follow up. And same thing. In the room for a few minutes and left! He couldn’t help me. I tried to make my co pay for the office visit both times the receptionist said I didn’t owe anything. Today I get a call from collections!!! Very disappointed with the dr and office.

He was recommended by my PCP. I've had problems with low back pain for years and on my first visit to see Dr. Kaufman, he explained what his plan of care would be and in terminology that I could understand. I pt my care and recovery in his hands.

My Neurological surgeon sent me up to Mercy UPMC to the emergency room. Took me for an mri he came and said he didn’t Iike the changes in the film . Got me into surgery and recovery in 24hrs. Just what I needed

Took my mother to see Dr. Kaufmann as follow up for a fracture at the top of her neck. He couldn't have been nicer. After reading these reviews we were nervous to see him. He spent time with us, listened carefully to what we were telling him, performed physical tests of strength on my mother and even welcomed my daughter in the room. He was efficient, kind, understanding and sympathetic. I never write reviews but he deserves a great one - especially after reading all the negative reviews on here. His office staff and nurses were professional and even made copies of medication lists for us. Our appt was for 2:50 and at 2:53 we were back in the exam room. Dr Kaufmann came to see us 5 min later. great experience so far treated us very professional . Went back a 2nd time he is a very good surgeon .

Never again will I ever see him again. I have severe foraminal stenosis which is totally debillating. Before he operated on me I asked him about that because I read it in the MRI report. He just shrugged it off. Back then over a year and a half ago I did not fully umderstandy condition. He did a two hundred thousand dollar surgery on me. He did not correct my condition. I still have the same condition even worse today. Avoid him like that plague.

First off they were extremely rude, the doctor came in talking so low i had to ask him to repeat what he said which he did not repeat, they kept rolling their eyes every time i asked a question and they made it very clear they don't care about helping me as they rushed me out of the office. They said they couldn't find my CT scans and asked if I actually had one (just another thing they assumed I was lying about) then the doctor came in seconds later and lied about my CT scans saying he looked at it right before he came walking in, i askes to see it and he juat mumbled something and blew the request off. Needless to say they didn't help me at all. I was also treated like a drug seeker instead of a patient seeking help. I would never recommend this office to anyone. The doctor spent 5 minutes in the room with me. Didn’t even do any physical exam. He had no interest in helping. He made me feel as if I was wasting his time. I was referred to him by my regular neurologist so it’s not like I was there for no reason. The RN that was with him was of more help and listened better then he did.

Dr Kaufman is a good surgeon. Does his bedside manor have anything to do with his skills in the operating room?

Was not satisfied with the over all appointment. The doctor was unable to offer and conclusive answers as to why I have experienced severe back pain and spasms for nearly 7 years. Suggested a fusion although it may not work. The nurse that I saw first was much for helpful and concerned.

He has no bed side mannor.

I don't think he ever looked at my cervical MRI. I also had a lumbar MRI. He told me that surgery would not help alleviate my symtoms. I had been to Dr Kaufmann before with different insurance and he told me to live with what I had as long as I could and when I could do so no longer to get surgery.I am on medicare now. Why has he changed his mind? He also got most of the facts about my lumbar MRI wrong. He was in a big hurry to leave. I felt very disappointed and brushed off.I would not even want him to do surgery on my back or anything else I don't think he ever looked at my cervical MRI. I also had a lumbar MRI. As I was explaining my condition Dr. Kaufmann kept repeating "Uh huh" in the middle of every sentence I said. I don't even know if he looked at the MRI that I brought with me. He did look at the report of the MRI, but I never saw him look at he actual MRI to give me his own opinion. He didn't think I was a candidate for surgery and he was quick to get out of the room after reporting this to me. I told him how it is painful even to do dishes or wash a window, but he insists that he sees nothing but a minute disc bulge repeating that I wouldn't need surgery. At the end of the appointment I was left feeling like has no time for me because I don't need surgery and therefore I won't be making him any money. He told me less than my Physical Therapist AND my Chiropractor. The Nurse even said a few things I mentioned CONCERNED her, but the doctor didn't seem to have any concern about me at all. I left feeling like yet another doctor didn't take me seriously and brushed me off like I am making up the pain and exhaustion I am feeling. I wouldn't trust Dr. Kaufmann with anything especially my life. Absolutely horrible. The staff on the other hand was excellent.
