Great thinker and promoter of health

I received lower back surgery from Dr. Hanscom several years ago. I had an extremely painful spinal disc herniation that had left my lower left leg paralyzed and extensive cramping in my buttocks. It was unbearable. To this day I am pain free. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Hanscom for his help. He also gave me his book "Back in Control". Although I needed emergency surgery in that case, the book has helped in other ways, not only with physical pain. I am rereading it now and I have shared it with others who have also said it has helped them a great deal. After a failed back surgery in Montana, Dr. Hanscom quickly identified the problem and corrected the problem. Not only that her was brilliant in his post op care and follow through. I went on to row almost 500 miles afterwards. He was also super kind! Very grateful!

DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR. He is unprofessional, dismissive, condescending, uninterested, and only wants to market his book. He (allegedly) reviewed my X-rays in another room, deciding I did not need to be a part of that conversation (?), and did not even glance at the old x-rays I brought with me for him to examine. He talked AT me for 4 minutes, ranted (actually said, "I am going to rant"), looked utterly BORED that he even had to be there, never asked a single question, never did an exam, talked about things that were completely irrelevant to my visit and needs, barely let me get a word in edgewise to his rant, looked at his assistant for clarifying questions instead of asking ME ("this has been going on for 5 weeks she said?"), told me that everything I need to know is in his book, that I should just read that and it will all make sense, said I can come back in 2 weeks "if I felt like it", then stood up and left. This person is literally EVERYTHING that is wrong with our health care system in this country and absolutely NOT worth your time, energy or money. DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR. This man is so incredibly unprofessional. My mother has tried everything as far as natural medicine and nothing has worked. It’s been years of pain and she is looking for other solutions. She was called a liar and that her pain wasn’t real. Dr Hanscom told her that it was all in her head and handed her his book. It’s a shame that he is using his medical platform to promote his book. In addition, the notes that were sent to my mothers doctor were highly unprofessional. He claimed that they had a really successful meeting where he went over many of her options and that my mother was on board. This was NOT the case. He didn’t go over any options with her other than his own through his book. Please don’t waste your time with someone that doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Dr. David Hanscom is a brilliant man. Like most geniuses, he is misunderstood and ahead of his time. His book completely changed my life! There are two important things to keep in mind when reading the reviews below. 1) It blows my mind that this following fact is lost on people who he tells to read his book. Please realize that this man could easily take you (or your insurance company) to the bank and make tens, if not hundreds, or thousands of dollars operating on your spine. Instead he is offering you a $20 solution out of the goodness of his heart, because he is an EXPERT in all things spine related. I promise you that it would be much easier for him to give you an unnecessary operation (what you THINK you may need) and make WAY more money performing surgery than he could EVER make selling his book. Yet, because he is aware of the dangers of surgery and how unsuccessful back surgery can be, he offers you a conservative approach that will save you money, time, and unnecessary pain from a potentially failed surgery. All of this and more is outlined in his book. 2) He is an expert. Plain and simple. I'm sure it is no problem for him to look at an Xray film or MRI and immediately assess whether you would actually benefit from surgery or not. Again, all of that info and more is in the book. So here's what you need to do... RESEARCH the success rates of back surgery (I'll give you a hint: they're garbage.) And then open your mind and your heart to see that this man has YOUR best interest in mind. Again, if he did not, then I'm sure he would have no problem making $$$ off of you (like all his colleagues). The trouble is that you are going in already thinking you know better than him, and have made up your mind thinking that surgery will solve all of your problems. Nobody wants to dig deep into their own life and discover the real reasons why the pain is there. Everyone just wants a quick fix... But there is no such thing. Read the book. David confirmed for me all that dr sarno said! As a surgeon who went through pain and anxiety himself this was a life changing experience. My back pain has never been the same. Im back to skiing,surfing and living healthy! Thanks to David I didnt have surgery and looking at the stats it was the best decision i ever made! Davids approach takes work and time and I wanted an easy fix! Realizing surgery never works and if it does its a placebo I started meditating, writing and healing myself through visualization,exercise,reading,writing, changing my thinking and showing my back whos boss! Most people wont get this guy as they scorned dr sarno, jesus and the buddha too! But medication and surgery never works so do the work and heal yourself! Working RN,presented c lowback pain inability to spread legs or stand up straight from hips. Did fusion L5,S1 left c scar tissue L-5 nerve, still had same s/s. Told pain was in my head for 6 mo. Gp tried to do pelvic was shocked took xray. DX severe OA both hips. Hanscom took me to back room away from employees, told"I chose to live this way, pain was in my head &that severe OA did not hurt as much as moderate OA. He was pissed he got caught failing to DX the real problem, hub calledhimQuack!

I had emergency surgery and that is how I met Dr. Hanscom. Not the ideal circumstances to say the least. His bedside manner was professional and kind. He asked questions and he waited for answers. He was patient and did not sugar-coat possible surgical outcome. His "team" as well were very good. I did receive a copy of his book which I am now reading. If you have had multiple surgeries and have chronic pain, Dr. Hascom is the doctor to see. If your seeking medications to just manage your pain or a quick fix surgery he isn’t the surgeon to see. He does a through evaluation of your sleep, anxiety, and issues that are causing anger or stress in your life before he will even consider surgery. If it’s mechanical in nature he will fix it. If it isn’t, he has a great program to help decrease your pain levels with your active participation.

I am a retired physician and saw Dr. Hanscom with my wife who has chronic back pain and two prior back surgeries. Like other reviewers we were not happy to hear his message. Unlike some others,we listened, read the book and have been following the suggested practices. My wife’s pain has remarkably improved without further. As a physician, I highly recommend Dr. Hanscom as his deep understanding of chronic pain gives good results for those who listen. Tim Schubert MD

I've never been more disappointed in a "doctor." I suffer from chronic back pain due to severe scoliosis (I've had surgery for it-NOT by him) but went to him for help with what I think is a pinched nerve. He didn't even look at my back, he merely glanced at my X-rays, using my appointment to 1) tell me that the pain was in my head, 2) told me to "NEVER discuss my pain with ANYONE EVER again", 3) gave me his book and 4) referred me to his website "Back in Control." Total waste of time and money.

Dr. Hanscom is not a doctor I would use not reccommend. I met with him once and he handed me the book that he wrote and said my pain was all in my head. I feel that he did not listen to a word I said. He had another younger doctor shadowing him without asking my permission. He also had some woman typing everything he said. So then when I returned for my follow up he tried the same stunt. No proper treatment and did not remember why he scheduled the follow up in the first place, so I told him to read the previous notes he had the young lady type last time. If I wouldnt have said anything I would have paid for 2 doctor visits that did not help me at all. Wasted my time and money is all that was accomplished. Also it seemed he was trying to talk down to me and i felt I was not treated like a patient needing help but someone who had no purpose for being there and wasnt worth his time because he said there was nothing he could do for me. This was done to me in front of another young doctor shadowing him. Anyway, after a second opinion fron Dr. Jackman's PA he ordered an MRI on my hip with contrast low and behold I needed surgery on my hip. The PA discovered this because he listened to me and used his critical thinking skills along with the MRI results. So it was not all in my head and a book written by Dr. Hanscom was not what was needed to treat my pain. I would never use Dr. Hanscom ever again and would not reccommend him to anyone else. Dr. Jackman and Bruckner are with Proliance Ortho and Spine Surgeons and they are awesome and in network with Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield for all those who were in the same predicament as I was. My wife had back fusion 12/2015. In Jan 2017 we return as some problems are returning (pain, weakness). Dr. takes x-rays, says everything looks fine. But we need to read his new book (same title, white cover) and follow the steps on his web site. We return April 2017 with CT results listing several issues. First thing he says is "I see you haven't logged into the web site...." Then says he won't operate on anyone until they have followed the steps plus working out. NEXT!!

Hanscom has a lot of experience. However this can be a disadvantage. He made 3 mistakes in my diagnosis and superimposed his subjective feelings about me when I returned to Swedish for help. I asked for an outside referral 3 times. He literally said I'm not able to do that .when I returned to Swedish he refused to see me. I spent a lot of money traveling back and forth from Oregon to Seattle. It has good diagnostic skills for definite problems. But he is not good at troubleshoot
