Dr. David R. Cummings

-PLEASE READ CAREFULLY- My brain is still processing what happened today BUT here is what I learned about Dr. Cummings: I went in to take my 15 year old for a consultation only to see if we have to remove 4 wisdom teeth. Her dentist referred us to a couple of surgeons he knew and we picked this office since the reviews were good! We walked in the staff asked us to fill out the forms and give them our dental insurance info and actually we made sure before going in that we were "in network". ....Okay...all good SO FAR... we went in sat for ONLY 10 minutes with Dr. Cummings and he said there's no need to remove those teeth now and her jaw pain was because of TMJ! I asked what TMJ was and he explained. He said it would naturally go away but he asked us to go back next summer to remove wisdom teeth when the jaw pain is gone. As we were leaving the office thinking everything was covered by our dental insurance, the office lady asked us for medical card info!! I was confused and asked why MEDICAL ? and she said cause Dr. told us he talked to you about TMJ and that should be charged extra to medical insurance and that's not dental anymore. At this point I was soooo confused but handed her my Kaiser card. She said ohhhhh sorry we don't work with Kaiser so you have to pay $270 out of pocket cause Dr. Cummings talked to you about TMJ. I was about to scream hell with you and what ever freakin TMJ is but I calmly said there is noooo way in this world I pay you a dime for 10 minutes talk and you're already charging my MetLife dental insurance. If dr. Cummings wants to charge me for "TMJ" then he should come outside his office and tell me why! No one asked me for my medical insurance either via phone or when I arrived and now after the visit is done you tell me .....SURPRISE... you're paying me $270 just CUZ... I'm telling you so!! What is going on here??? Finally the girl went back talked to him and asked me to go in his office. I explained my frustration to him and that I am not paying extra out of pocket for something that my dental insurance is already paying for. His response: You don't understand what I did for you and the process I explained to you and if you don't pay me this you will not come back next summer for your daughter's wisdom teeth removal and I won't see her anymore !! At this point I'm sitting there in disbelief and my jaw hit the floor but before he mentions TMJ (this time for my broken jaw) and charges me another $270.... I ran out and said there are other surgeons in town too you know...just FYI for your TMJ.... He is the best Oral Surgeon in Orange County!

I'm eighteen years old and I got my wisdom teeth extracted today. The surgery went very well. I was given some gas to make me relax and then an injection that put me to sleep in about a minute. Next thing I knew, it was over. I thought I might not feel myself, but I felt better in less than an hour. I do have to wait a few days before I can eat what I usually do, but I seriously can't believe how well the surgery went and how great I've felt all day.
