About Dr. Daniel William Berland
Reviews for Dr. Daniel William Berland
Dr B. has been my PCP for 12 yrs. He’s a great doc and great guy. I think the people that give him bad reviews were looking for opioids and or Benzos and he didn’t fall for their nonsense that drs in the past fell for when prescribing those things to them. He’s an ethical guy and he’s also straight forward. He’s not gonna tell you what you want hear, he will tell you what he thinks and do what he thinks is best for you. Dr. Berland is a great doctor and a really good guy. I think the people leaving bad reviews are people that were seeking narcotics and thought he would fall for the same nonsense their MDs from the past fell for. He’s straight forward and will do what he can for you, while doing it in the most ethical way.
Once again Dr. Berland has responded to my concern immediately, with cheerful candor and straight forward medical advice. My doctor of many years, Dr. Berland never fails to listen carefully to my answers to the thoughtful and thorough questions he asks. Most important, he is never dismissive of my concerns. I have counted having Dr. Berland as my primary physician my good luck, and I am especially grateful for him at a time like this when it is heart-warming to see how hard he is working and can’t even see me in person. May this review serve as one of those signs on people’s front yards as thanks to health care workers. Thank you Dr. D. Berland!

Dr.Berland was rude and arrogant. I actually left before my first appointment was finished and he had the audacity to put his arm out to try to block my daughter and I from leaving the exam room. WORST experience with a doctor EVER!!
I’ve seen ALOT of docs in my life & Dr. Berland is one of the worst that I’ve seen, he is truly the worst doc at U of M. He is EXTREMELY insensitive & does NOT listen. He “types” you & treats you according to his judgement without getting to know you at all. He does not treat each patient as an individual, I’m pretty sure he judges everyone as a drug addict or seeker when they walk through the door. The other doctors don’t even care for him because he treats them like he is far more superior than them so that should give you an idea as to how he treats his patients. The first time I saw him he made me cry, I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which is very painful & doesn’t have a lot of great treatment options right now & instead of helping me he told me that my kids would need to be put into therapy because they have a sick mom (like I don’t already feel HORRIBLE for that EVERY day of my life). He referred me to U of M’s rehabilitation program which was wonderful! After I completed it I sent him an email expressing that I learned so much & that I wanted to discuss a couple more healthcare options with him to continue my progress based on what I learned but, when I went to see him he basically told me that everything I learned was no good - YOU SENT ME THERE & SAID IT WAS A GREAT PROGRAM WTH!!!!! I did learn ALOT & it helped out ALOT, U of M’s rehabilitation program is AMAZING! He continued to belittle me (like the first appointment) treat me like everything I was doing was wrong, TRY to drug shame me (AGAIN) even though at this point I’m taking barely ANY meds & he says some of the WORST stuff - I had no idea docs were allowed to talk to their patients like that! He told me that if I were on Xanax (which I’m not) my husband (who’s sitting RIGHT NEXT to me) would leave me. Where does this stuff come from?!?!? I’m shocked this doc is still employed ESPECIALLY at U of M. Idk why I even bothered to go back to him after choosing to leave him once, guess I thought it was me & that I’d give him another chance but no, it’s not me - he’s a jerk! I get it Dr. Berland, your on a crusade against opioids & apparently everyone is secretly out to seek them ALL the time - not get proper healthcare, that can’t be it. Everything the other reviewers had to say is 100% spot on, the one who gave him 5 stars must be family/friend or was paid. I would NOT recommend him especially if you deal with a health issue that’s chronic, he will make your mental stability worse. I’ve never left a doc appointment fuming SO badly and again, I’ve seen ALOT of docs. He doesn’t even deserve one star. ???? Rude, arrogant, and dismissive. I have never walked out of an appointment before it was over, but I had to with him.

I agree with the other negative reviews. He was arrogant. He didn’t listen to me. He was rude and talked down to me. He made a lot of negative comments about medication prescribed to me by another doctor. I didn’t ask his opinion about that medication and did not want it. I will not be returning to see him. Staff outside of him were pleasant.

Dr Berland is a great doctor. At first I thought he was saying that I was crazy and all my pain was in my head but after I understood what he was talking about and I gave him a chance I found out that he was exactly right. I now know what he meant by the pain was in my head. It meant that when you take large doses of pain medication especially opiate medication, it can cause your brain to misfires to make you think you're in more pain than you are. He has saved my live because I believed in him.

Dr Berland was able to diagnose and recommend the exact treatment for my condition that NO other doctor could in over the 5 years I was in pain. He listened and told me what was wrong then taught me everything I should be doing in my situation. I would trust this doctor with my life, especially after giving me back mine. Thank you Dr B. From Richard T.
Condescending, judgmental and dismissive. He was full of preconceived responses. I saw him only because I needed a referral to another doc. He seemed half-interested in what I had to say. He clearly is not invested in patient health and experience. I am disappointed that such a good university has such a person on staff. Most telling was when the nurse asked me after my appt. what I thought of him. I said "not much," and the nurse agreed. Came back with: "Well, I think he means well."

Would NEVER recommend. Condescending, arrogant, narcissistic, and rude, not only to me but to his own staff. Disregards other colleagues diagnosis and is accusatory and belittling. Writing to University of Michigan to file a formal complaint. He seemed to go out of his way to try to belittle me in front of a resident/intern. Also spoke rudely to my wife.

First appt felt he was very condescending, arrogant & dismissive of not just my pain, but documented med history and diagnoses (within UofM portal mind you)I have 10 specialists all at UofM and he ridiculed every single one! Still gave him a chance and returned for 3 more appts! It got worse when he took a call about a patient in front of me, and talked horribly about them, even called names, to nurse during call! No thanks! Horribly unprofessional & plain mean. No compassion! Stay Away!!!
