In short, save your money and find a good massage/physical therapist or DO that will use science-based therapies. I'm disappointed in myself for not researching chiropractic more before. After initially falling for the marketing scam, I did finally research and in short Chiropractic was invented by D.D. Palmer in 1895 when he adjusted the spine of a deaf man and allegedly restored his hearing (a claim that is impossible based on anatomy). Based on this one case, Palmer decided that all disease was due to subluxation. There are now basically two camps of chiropractors, some who straightly peddle Palmer's pseudoscience and those that attempt to implement evidence based practices into their treatment. Basically if they are using evidence based practices then they are really just doing physical therapy while also cracking your back which temporarily feels good by releasing gases from your joints. Well it turns out "Dr." Buss graduated from, you guessed it, the Palmer Chiropractic school, with a 100% acceptance rate and 35k yearly tuition. After prolonged mid back pain I decided to find a Chiropractor with good reviews and found Harmony with great reviews and a $29 initial exam. The exam was fine, Dr. Buss was nice and seemed interested in solving the problem. He finished off with x-rays and then said to come back after he had some time to review the images. Apparently this is a very common practice they use to already get you coming back for your next appointment. Once at my next appointment, I was told I had acute scoliosis and shown the images (scare tactic) which I later had refuted by an actual doctor. He then went over the treatment plan which had to be prepaid to save money and consisted of 24 treatments over 8 weeks for a total of $2.3k. Another tactic to get you to commit to many more treatments than you need (it's impossible for them to know the number of treatments needed at that time) and keep you coming into the office. Furthermore, he said each visit would only take about 5 minutes and I would be in and out and back to my life (yet another red flag your chiropractor is especially a quack). This confused me because I wasn't exactly sure what I was paying for. As I was contemplating whether this was a good idea, he said lets get you your first adjustment. After all I thought I should at least try it. This lasted about 3 minutes and consisted of him cracking my back about as good as a foam roller would, cracking my neck which was a really weird experience and some kind of massage device that didn't feel like it was doing anything. Turns out you should never let someone touch you neck and neck adjustments have caused strokes before by severing an artery in your neck. Anyways, I decided to believe the quackery and prepay to save the most money. Then went home and did research and my neck really didn't feel good. I was confused why I needed a neck adjustment in the first place when I had back pain under my shoulder blade. Anyways, the next day I called and told them I would be going to a doctor and wanted to cancel my plan. They were nice about refunding me, which I was worried about and said they would bill me for my two visits. Today I get the bill and somehow my $29 exam and 3 minute adjustment totaled $232. Rather than try to argue the cost, since I guess I did indeed get the 3 minute adjustment (although I wasn't sure if this was included in my $29 exam or not since I was just returning for "my report of findings")I am posting this to hopefully make others aware. I have also seen reviews that this establishment performs adjustments on infants which is just crazy to me. Please do your research before you or worse, you take your child to a place like this. I have been doing physical therapy work with bands, bought a foam roller, massage gun, theracane, use tennis balls for myofascial release and I have just about gotten rid of the knot in my back and feel great. In short, save your money and find a good massage/physical therapist or DO that will use science-based therapies. … More
I was really suffering before seeing Dr. Buss. I limped for several weeks and thought my running days were over. However, Dr. Buss made such a positive difference in my life. My sciatica issues are a thing of the past. Thanks for giving me my life back and I am back to running 5Ks.
