Six years ago I had cervical pain and numbness in my left arm. I was pretty scared of surgery on my neck but Dr. Abernathy was highly recommend and he deserves to be. Doesn’t have the bedside warmth that you might want but when it comes to skill and capability there are few who could rival what he can do. When he did the surgery he found more damage than the MRI showed and he did what was needed.. Fusion of the C5-6-7 was required. Recovery is never easy but the pain left and the numbness was gone. If you're looking for an old doctor who loves performing surgeries and isn't interested in actually listening to you or helping you, Dr. Abernathey might be right for you. If you're looking for a doctor who is condescending and full of himself, he's definitly your guy! If you want a doctor who offers the latest non-surgical solutions and is willing to make surgery a last resort, I recommend looking elsewhere. He just isn't into that sort of thing. If you're looking for a doctor who is condescending and full of himself, he's definitely your guy! If you want a doctor who offers the latest non-surgical solutions and is willing to make surgery a last resort, I recommend looking elsewhere. He just isn't into that sort of thing. Too old and set in his ways, I guess?

Dr. Abernathey performed my back surgery in December 2020. If you want the best surgeon, you want Dr. Abernathey.

I have the utmost respect for Dr. Abernathy, his office staff and the Mercy medical staff who made my successful discectomy possible. After a month of agonizing pain from a herniated disk, a pain management specialist referred me to Dr. Abernathy (outside our healthcare network), calling him "the best neurosurgeon in IA" Dr. Abernathy explained available options in a straight forward way, answered all our questions and performed a minimally invasive procedure within the same week to resolve my arm numbness and nerve pain! I regained feeling and strength in my arm and fingers and mobility in my neck. I highly recommend him to anyone needing neck and back pain relief.

I see Dr Abernathy next week for 2 bulging discs in my lower back, does that mean since I'm seeing him I will have surgery

Worst receptionist ever! Hung up on me after I told her that her demeanor was rude!! A friend referred me to this doctor. Zero help from their intake lady and SUCH AN ATTITUDE!!!

Love Dr. Abernethy!! Would not trust anyone else with my spine. He is a straight shooter and will tell you how it is, and what you need.

Dr Abernathy did my daughter’s surgery and he is the best! However the older gal who answers the phone might think about if she likes her job. She doesn’t act like it. Had to call for work information and she was rude and hung up.

He was rude, short with me and acted as if he didn't have time for the appointment with him. I don't care who thinks he is a good doctor, his bedside manner is extremely unprofessional.

I like him as a doctor but the desk help is absolutely agonizing! I have had to call multiple times to get a few things taken care of and the older lady that i have dealt with every time was very unpleasant and not helpful at all. Other than her the visit was good! Toxic people should not work customer service!

Dr Chad has done both my low back surgeries. He's the best at what he does and I'm a success story. I hope I never need him again, but if I do, I'll be glad it's him. Thanks Dr Abernathy!!

Dr. Abernathy was open straightforward and super skilled. He in deed allowed me to walk in, have the surgery and walk out. Very efficient and professional.

Dr. Abernathy is the best. I have never had to wait always get right in. I have had 2 surgeries and I have been very satisfied with him as a person and a surgeon.

my name is lucas whitesell i had a fusion put in from Dr. Abernathey. Doc Abernathy gave me my life back! He listened to what I was saying, and in a few days surgery was done and I was on the road to recovery. After a year of being told from another Doctor that nothing was wrong with me, yet I lived on a high dose of gabapentin to even be able to move each day, I was blessed from two people directing me to go see Doc Abernathy. Can’t say enough about how much I appreciate this man.

My review is 100%. I am American but am living in China. I came all the way home for Dr. Abernathy's surgery. He was SPOT ON what needed to be fixed with my back even though it didn't concur with the doctor in China. He spoke with me, he gave me options and I thoroughly trusted him. He was honest and lovely and if I could recommend everyone who needs this type of surgery to him, I would.

mark me down at 2:45 just to see the results of my MRI and make me wait about 45 minutes to see just an MRI. The fact doctor offices want you to be 15 minutes early, but think they can take there sweet time should show how flawed this system is. Let's not forget the ridiculous amount of money these people make for bs unneeded appointments. I have had 3 surgeries with Dr Abernathy and I can't say enough good things. He is honest and straightforward but truly cares about his patients and their well-being. I wouldn't see another neurologist in Iowa.

I went to Dr. Abernathy in 2014 for L4 andL5 surgery. I did great! I recently injured that area again. I'm on my way to get another consultation today 5-07-2017. Will need surgery again I'm sure. This is the Dr. I want to do it.

Dr Abernathey exhibits a high level of competence however he doesn't ask many questions, and you have to pry to get information from him. I trust his analysis but really wish he wouldn't have moved on so quickly without conversing more thoroughly.

He did a good surgery but I should of been told to rest more...I was injured very easily after 3 weeks and the surgery was a bust ...been suffering ever since. Patients really need rest and to stay put. I was simply injured terribly by someone grabbing my hand and twisting my back. It totally reversed everything the doctor did. I was heartbroken. Would of liked him to tell me more the dangers of surgery too.

I have had 2 surgery's preformed by Dr. Chad Abernathy, both were complete successes, he has an excellent bedside manner and I can live very pain free today because of his expertise, both of my surgeries were disc/spine issues, both issues had disabled me, I will ever be grateful to him and the entire staff of Cedar Rapids Mercy.

Exceptional surgeon in every regard. He has extensive experience in neck surgery. I had two herniated disks -c5/c6 and c6/c7 - resulting in excruciating arm pain. Another surgeon recomended fusion. Got second opinion from dr abernathey who recomended replacing c6/c/7. Surgery was a complete success. Immediate and full relief following surgery. There are no other surgeons in Iowan that have the level of experience he has which is critical to successful treatment.

Dr A is one of the most personable, warm, and funny doctors I'very every met. He has excellent credentials. He went to great lengths to explain every aspect of of my care to me and my husband. He's performed surgery on me 3 times. One day surgeries. Excellent results. I would recommend him highly to anyone needing spinal care.
