Yes very long wait, but how can anyone expect anything else with an amazing specialist. The time with Dr. Shields was brief, but she is clearly is a brilliant doctor. Her staff are all very polite and knowledgeable.

The most amazing eye hospital in the world! Top notch people. Just know there's a lot of waiting around even during routine visits, and the waiting area can get very stuffy at times!

DO NOT COME HERE. 6 am appointment and got seen at 9am.Horrible patient service, horrible appointment times, the receptionist Marie is the rudest person I have ever came across. She will give you and abnormal amount of disrespect and speaks down on you. I’ve met prisoners nicer than Marie. Everyone in the waiting room was collectively complaining and even got to the point where we would cheer every time someone got called back because we were all waiting for so long. Appointment times aren’t respected, you have to pay for parking which is fine but when you’re waiting hours in a waiting room it’s gets frustrating. Dr. Shields as one of the few world recognized doctors knows her subject matter expertise and if you live in the east coast you will most likely be "forced' to go to her. However, interactions with Dr. Shields are uncomfortable as her staff shakes (literally) in her presence. I would describe interactions with her as equivalent to that of a robot, with the exception that robots are not programmed to be rude. She points mistakes to her staff in front of the patient in the most unprofessional way I have ever seen a doctor do. Dr. shields shows no empathy and or interest in getting to know the patient - she only cares about the case. Her attitude is however compensated by some of her resident students that are friendly and excited to be in her practice. The finance department deserves a review of its own, as it is messy and again, no empathy for a patient. I wish there was somebody with Dr. Shield's knowledge but with the charisma that characterizes a great doctor. I have had 3 ocular oncologists. Appointments with any of them usually require an entire day. This cancer is very rare, so a doctor like Carol Shields is going to have a very busy schedule. That being said, when I saw Dr Shields 6 months ago I was there for 5 hours. I really liked her- she was fast but answered all of my questions. The receptionist helping me prior to the appointment was really friendly and helpful. Also, I had no problems with billing. Dr.Shields is one of the best in her field. The doctor is great but this facility is a money hungry, disgustingly greedy, terribly managed hospital. I have NEVER IN MY LIFE experienced such total disregard for patient financial situations. HOW CAN YOU CONTINUE TO CASH MY CHECKS AND STILL SEND MY ACCOUNT TO COLLECTIONS?! The manager refuses to speak with patients to handle any situation! I am a long time patient of Dr. shields. She was instrumental in the correct diagnosis and successful treatment of the tumor in my right eye. She has literally written the books on ocular oncology, she explains quickly and concisely, she runs her team like a colonel runs a well practiced army. There is no one more capable and no one I trust more.

Hands down the most patient unfriendly medical practice I’ve ever encountered in my 71 years. You’re forced to wait hours in a crowded waiting room only to get rushed through oftentimes scary cancer treatment or in my case finding out I had eye cancer as the doc dictated the information. Writing today after being told my appointment for my exam was being moved from a single appointment for exam and injection at Noon to an examination at 7:30 AM and then a wait until 1:00 for my shot. The poor scheduler admitted I might have to wait “a few hours” for both appointments. And the docs have zero consideration for patients and their own situations. It is a totally doctor-centric practice that screams out I’m the important doctor. If you wanna see me, you’ll tolerate whatever discomfort or inconvenience makes my day more convenient for me and my colleagues. If you don’t like it go to some other international expert. It’s shameful. If you have eye cancer and can get to NYC, start there. This is a practice and an experience to avoid. Terrible patient service and customer care. The appointment wait times are really unacceptable. Better organization and scheduling are necessary. This reflects poorly on the practice as a whole.

Excellent physician!

I had surgery for uveal melanoma back in 2019. I am grateful I was able to get my surgery relatively fast even though I’m from out of state. Before my first appointment, I was told new patient appointments were all day commitments. I was fine with that, I just wanted to be seen. At my follow up, I really saw how they treat patients like cattle. I understand these appointments will take a couple hours. However, they schedule everyone in one giant clump and make you sit for hours. My appointment was scheduled for 11am, but they called to switch it to 8am. I didn’t see the doctor until 1pm! She also berated 2 employees in front of me. I was already on edge from the anxiety of waiting 5 hours. If you need an avastin shot, they also dilate your eyes and then send you to get a prescription at the pharmacy down the street afterwards. The prescription is for a simple solution that every doctor should have. I never have to do this back home when I go for avastin shots or checkups. If you’ve ever had your eyes dilated, you know it’s hard to navigate anywhere in the sunlight. They don’t care. I got to the pharmacy and my prescription was canceled. So I got to walk back and all the office to resend it. No apology, they were just annoyed. Needless to say, I won’t be returning. Good Doctor,not pleased with how they handle billing.

After filling out all of their paperwork 3 times and several phone calls to confirm information, I waited 2 weeks for a 6am appointment. By 6:30 I was back in the car on my way home because, "Someone should have called you to let you know we don't take your insurance." Disorganized, unprofessional and they didn't even apologize.

Dr Shields is excellent. However her office is run by inept people and when she’s not on site the interns play all day. Literally they argue over one of them straightening chairs & other one messing them up. There’s a coffee fetcher in a white coat too. We waited EIGHT HOURS finally saw Dr Shields on iPhone. We paid $3,000 for the office visit as they don’t accept our insurance. Really awful to put cancer patients this type of treatment waiting all day. How much effort does it take to schedule appointments? They have everyone come 8-9:30 but most patients don’t get seen until after 11:00. Star Rating does NOT reflect Dr. Carol Shields, but rather the Shields & Shields business. In summary, this business has the most backwards billing department I have ever encountered and most unorganized scheduling service for patients. I drove 4 hours 1-way to see Dr. Shields in which their scheduling department strictly indicated new patients are only scheduled from 7am-9am Mondays - that is it. As soon as I walk in, you are required to pay a $500 "deductible" upfront prior to seeing a doctor. Oh, and it does not matter if this provider is in your insurance network or not. Not a deal breaker, "Dr. Shields specializes in my condition" ran through my head. My appointment was at 7am, got called into exam room at say 10am, did not see Dr. Shields until about 1pm, and did not get out until about 3:30pm. During this time, I could hear another patient complaining about the same thoughts in the next room, therefore, I knew if I did it would not do any good. The amount of time for total eye exam services maybe accumulated to 1 hour and spoke with Dr. Shields for maybe 5 mins out of the 8.5 hours I waited there. Oh, and services are so uncoordinated they had to dilate my eyes twice. If you need to follow up with a procedure expect to pay that up front AGAIN (thousands of dollars for my case) and regardless if you meet your insurance deductible or not. P.S.- the billing supervisor is a witch! Do I recommend Dr. Shields - ABSOLUTELY, but not this business. Also, the other doctors and staff (excluding billing) are very pleasant and professional and feel your pain of this poorly managed business. Transfer your records and going elsewhere. No compassion or empathy. Treat you as a specimen. Sad because it would not take much for Dr. Shield to become a great doctor. She and her team of doctor appear to have the skills but they are robots, not human.

This review is about the billing office at shields and shields oncology. The 3 women i have dealt with over the past year and a half are heartless, unsympathetic and ruthless. They are gloria , stephanie and today for the first time was ginny. They are led by their mysterious manager David who refuses to speak to patients. The doctors there are fantastic and I love them all. I have conjunctival melanoma a very rare form of cancer. Eye cancer. Today they informed me to go seek help elsewhere. Ginny told me today that they no longer accept my health insurance because my health insurance does not pay. She says I am now a cash customer. But I told her I have approval from my insurance company for 12 visits. She said to me they don’t pay go to Mass. eye and ear in Boston it is closer for you. I said I want to go to Wills Eye institute because they are the best. Again she told me my insurance company does not pay and they no longer accept it. I told her my cancer is back she did not care. Whatever happened to the doctors oath “do no harm”. So I called my insurance company furious finding out why they don’t pay. A very nice woman at my insurance company says to me we do pay you just have not met your deductible. Wills Eye institute has contracted rates with insurance companies. Wills Eye institute submits a bill for $6900 . Contracted rate is $400. A far cry from what they want to get paid but an agreed-upon price through a contract that I was told cannot be broken. They will not make an appointment for me until I pay them in full almost $1700. Even though my cancer is back.But yet since I’ve been a patient of theirs since October 2017 my insurance company has paid over $100,000 to them and yet they refuse to see me for $1700. They will not except a payment plan for me. I said to Ginny today if I pay you the $1700 Will you make an appointment for me she said yes but you are now a cash customer because let me repeat myself we do not accept your insurance company anymore. One of the best oncologist doctors, pleasant, friendly and energetic doctor I have met.

Saved my son”s life. He was diagnosed with a rare type of eye cancer, tumor inside eye ball. Received treatment and is now cancer free with 20/20 vision. Dr. Shields is a miracle worker, an angel from heaven. Thank you very much!

Dr. Shields is amazing and compassionate for my daughter who was diagnosed with eye cancer at 6 months. My daughter is now 15 months and cancer free. We still will see Dr. Shields every 6 months to make sure the cancer does not return. The manager David is a nice person even though some people say he isn't he is the one that contacted us late on a Friday night and got us in to see Dr. Shields. I have been a patient (and cancer survivor) of Drs. Carol and Jerry Shields for almost 17 years. I continue to see Dr. Carol and her staff for annual check ups. Yes I have seen her do all of the nasty things people say about her in these reviews. The problem is , as you will see by the wait time to get an appointment and the extraordinary wait in her jammed reception room (make sure to get the 6am appt), she is the WORLDS BEST at what she does. Does she have time to sit and chit chat with patients? Unfortunately no because if she does that is one less patient she can see and hopefully save their eye if not their just their life. Since Dr. Jerry retired more feel on her shoulders and made her time even that much more valuable to her patients. If I have to choose between bedside manner and saving as many eyes and lives as possible I know which I would choose. If you want the BEST this is the doctor to choose. Oh and she is training all of those people trailing behind her to be the BEST.

Did you see another Dr. Shields than we did? We drove 7 hours to see this doctor and waited even longer to see this person for less than 10 minutes. She has an entourage that consists of someone you sets up her IPads, another to hand her the head set, another to hold her I Pad as she speaks into it, and another who speaks to the patient. Her staff is so pleasant until they hear her coming. I’d say she has no bedside manner, but she didn’t speak to her patient AT ALL. Oh I’m sorry.... did I leave out the person who had to announce her before she entered the room? Please don’t blame her billing office for any mistakes or injustice. They are all probably scared to death and doing as they are ordered. If you have not experienced this for yourself it gives a whole new meaning to narcissism and Dr. Phil would have at least a seasons worth of material.

Make sure you double check they take your insurance or you won’t find out till everything is said and done at the end of your appointment. Horrible to get any information or talk to someone there.

Best place ever for ocular oncology care and surgery.

If you have any eye cancer issues, get to Dr. Carol Shields as fast as humanly possible. She and her team will provide you with the most excellent, advanced, well coordinated care in the world (literally). There are not sufficient words to express her expertise, knowledge, skill, passion; you will receive the best care in the world from Dr. Carol Shields.

I don't know how someone that has a child with a terminal disease could even deal with the medical world. My son has a rare genetic disease that brought us to here in 2015. OVER 2 YEARS later a Ginny from this office says she 'found a bill' that is due. When I call to pay part of the bill finally the snarky Ginny says she sent us to collections. So they loose it for 2 years and then months after my research send it to collections? I ask for her boss and she says theres no one above her.

I wish I could give Dr. Shields more than 5 stars! She is world class and is a brilliant doctor. If you have an eye problem, you can do a lot worse than Dr. Shields, but you cannot do any better.
