Carl C Hook

I moved to Minnesota (MN) to go to Mayo Clinic for a rare form of blood cancer. Where I'd lived before, the doctors didn't know how to help me. At Mayo, I was assigned to Dr. Carl Christopher Hook, a hematologist/oncologist. During the shutdown in March 2020, Mayo closed its doors and Dr. Hook abandoned me; stopping all of my care abruptly. This was in spite of the MN governor saying that the chronically and severely ill were to still get care (doctors in other health systems in MN didn't do like like Dr. Hook and the other Mayo doctors). When Mayo reopened, Dr. Hook told me that he was not going to give me the care he'd promised and I'd die as a result. Mayo and their doctors have a reputation among the locals (laymen, doctors outside of Mayo, and gov't officials alike) as only caring about profit. Because Mayo shutdown totally and Dr. Hook and the other doctors abandoned their patients, and because Mayo "had to" take care of poor people with Covid-19, Mayo and its doctors lost a lot of profit for 2020. My insurance didn't pay well, so Dr. Hook decided to let me die. When I challenged and rejected Dr. Hook's decision, he retaliated by permanently banning me from Mayo Clinic. So I complained to the state and was told by the MN Dept. of Health (MDH) that Dr. Hook's and Mayo's actions were "morally wrong," but legal under MN law. Dr. Hook and Mayo can abandon patients, neglect patients even if they hurt or kill them, and ban patients permanently. I was told by MDH that Mayo and their doctors were known for turning away patients and neglecting them; especially if they had gov't insurance like Medicare. So Dr. Hook's actions were unsurprising. When I talked to the Office of the Commissioner of the MN Dept. of Human Services, they told me Mayo is known for arbitrarily banning patients. I think Dr. Hook took advantage of this policy to punish me for complaining and challenging his decision. No one I've met in the last 11 months in MN likes Mayo or their doctors and I don't blame them. I moved over 2,000 miles and spent money I didn't have for nothing.
