Dr. Bruce Kreiger was my Pulmonary /Critical mentor at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Fl, during my three-year Pulmonary Fellowship. I learned many things from him. He has always been well respected and loved by his patients. He has always been characterized by a smart up to date In our community. I agree with LungMasterRRT. Dr Krieger is the kindest, most compassionate, knowledgeable intensivist I’ve ever met. I would not allow myself to be taken care of by anyone else outside of Dr. Krieger, Dr. McMillin and Dr. Blanco. This is a phenomenal team. I do not agree with what the initial reviewer stated. Worked side by side with Dr. Krieger for 3 years. I never once saw him act the way that this first reviewer portrayed him. In terms of his private practice, I cannot review that as I did not experience it. As the intensivist at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, I hold him responsible for my mother's passing. My mother was alert and in good condition, merely awaiting transfer to a more local facility (we don't live in Jacksonville) when she entered his care. First, a colleague of his does a procedure without consent and using a medication that it was already charted she was allergic to, with this procedure she has a bad reaction to it and was left unconscious. Then, Krieger attempts to cover it up for him. Trying to blame her condition as a result of a disease that even by the CDC's standards is rare in the U.S. Apparently the severity of this disease also varied from extremely contagious to not all contagious. When I questioned him about what the CDC says he said they don't know what they're talking about. After this, I requested a second opinion, multiple times too, and was refused with the explanation that he is the director of the CCU and I am not allowed to question him. The only people he did allow to offer second opinions are friends and students of his who would not preform any tests but just tell me how great Krieger is and how I should respect him as he taught in Miami. He also apparently had no knowledge of what medications she was on. As I had questioned about the use of Propofol on her, he was insistent that she was not on it. When i told him to go look at her IV, he saw that she was and then dismissed as the nurse probably prescribed it, thinking that I don't know that nurses don't prescribe things. If this wasn't bad enough, he also admitted to intentionally inducing kidney failure. Saying that when he was learning medicine that is what they did to patients they deemed terminal because it was a relatively quick and painless way to die. He knew that I would not suspend treatment on my mom and he felt that would be the best way to not have me make a decision if it came to that. He later lied and said I authorized him to do it. The icing to this experience would have to be the night she passed. I had ordered a nephrologist to come in see if he could try and fix the mess that Krieger caused. Krieger sent him away multiple times and I was eventually told they were suspending all treatment. My mom did not have a DNR, and I was the power of attorney so I went to question this. I was told that Krieger is superseding my authority as power of attorney and forcing to not only end treatment, but a DNR order on her as well. Needless to say, I was furious and I demanded he come up there. He refused. Finally, after causing a commotion I was told treatment would be resumed by the nurses and the current doctor on staff because of the confusion and that Krieger would call me to straighten things out. This was a very different attitude, as prior Krieger refused all phone calls saying that he doesn't do phone calls. That night I left and headed home, it was a four drive. Halfway through around midnight, I get a call from Krieger who is trying to argue about removing the DNR and resuming treatment. After firmly insisting, he relents and agrees claiming that as soon as he hangs up with me, he's going to give her her medication and resume treatment. His last words to me were "I don't think she'll code any time soon, but heh heh, she can be unpredictable like that." I hung up on him, thinking he was just angry and being rude. Two and a half hours later, I get a call from the night nurse saying my mom has coded and they're going to try and revive her. About a half hour after that, they pronounced her dead. When I asked about what happened I was told that she coded and that in was in fact the second time she coded. Previously she had coded a little after midnight but was revived. I went up there that morning to talk to him and find out what happened, and he had conveniently gone on a week vacation. I have worked side by side next to this man for 10+ years and he is a Fantastic Critical Care Physician. Very Compassionate and caring toward his Co-Workers and Patients not only on the ICU but the whole Hospital. Dr Krieger is the Doctor I would ask for, God Forbid if something ever happened to any of my Family Members.
