I had my scoliosis surgery 6/24/2019. Dr. Rawlins is a very wonderful doctor. I was terrified to get my surgery but he made me feel relaxed. It's been two years since my surgery date & my life is different. I have no pain thanks to Dr. Rawlins & everybody at HSS. If you are scared to get this surgery, don't be. Awful bedside manner! Had surgery one year ago, now I have other nerve pain. He does not care. The entire experience with him was terrible. I was in the hospital for a week, poor pain management. Find a different doctor.

If you are not certain you are a surgical candidate I would not recommend seeing Dr Rawlins. He spent under 5 minutes with me and gave me disappointing little information other than to come back in 3 months. I felt like my case was unimportant to him. Judging from the reviews it sounds like Dr Rawlins is much more engaged with surgical candidates. If you are not certain you are a surgical candidate I would not recommend seeing Dr Rawlins. First, Dr. Rawlins took a remarkable degree of care in his diagnosis, listened carefully to what I had to say about my lifestyle, given that I was facing a heavy fusion/laminectomy but still had athletic aspirations central to my life, a young, athletic daughter, an active dog, and a marriage in which we cherish activity and the outdoors. The procedure seemed faultless....I am up and around weeks ahead of schedule. He came to visit me every day in the hospital, with humor and compassion. Plus, the experience at HSS was the Gold Standard for hospital care. I could not have asked for more, and I feel, 11 days in and resuming all normal activities without twisting or lifting, within medical advice, almost pain free, like I get to be young again at 55. Notice none of the negative reviews mention the outcome of surgery....and, my personal experience is that I could not have asked more of a doctor, or of a supremely skilled surgeon. Simply put — Dr. Rawlins saved my life. As an adolescent, I was a passenger in a car wreck and sustained severe vertebral injury to my lumbar spine. After nearly 2 years of physical therapy with little improvement to my symptoms, I was eventually referred to Dr. Rawlins. It became apparent that my condition was worsening, due to malalignment of my spine and thus my case became a surgical one. Dr. Rawlins has remarkable skills and does not waste any time in letting his patients understand if and why he is the right surgeon for them. I had an L1-L3 spinal fusion procedure and 2 years post-operatively I had another procedure performed by him to remove the pedicle screws and rods from my spine. It has been over 10 years since I had both of those procedures done and I have been living my life pain-free with a very active lifestyle in a physically demanding career in the Sports Medicine field. I owe this all to the excellent work of Dr. Rawlins and the HSS medical staff. Simply put — Dr. Rawlins saved my life. Dr. Rawlins operated on my L4-5 disc 8 years ago. He is a remarkable doctor who thoroughly explained the procedure and all alternatives as well as what to expect in recovery. I woke up pain free and have remained that way for 8 years. I am so thankful I chose him as my surgeon.

Best of the best! I spent so many years in pain prior to surgery. Dr. Rawlins performed a multi level cervical spinal fusion (C4, C5, C6) for me two years ago, and my recovery results have been amazing. His bedside manner is as wonderful as his surgical skills. I recommend him wholeheartedly to everyone!

I am writing months after my surgery so I can fully report on my experience and condition. I am definitely someone who likes to keep moving and after one month I was really feeling much better, you can barely see my scar and though I’m not 100% yet I’m completely functional. I am 47-year-old women who has never had any surgery before Dr. Rawlins, who was referred by top Neurologist and other surgeons at the best hospitals in New York and they were unaware of each other’s recommendations (funny). Needless to say, I was excited to read his reviews. I was truly taken back and surprised by some of them, I understand why, but as a person on the other side of the Knife, please keep things in perspective when writing a review, I noticed the unfavorable reviews were based on his personality I assume they feel he can work on his bedside manners, in all fairness he is British lol, but what’s important is he chose not to perform the surgery because he felt they were NOT a candidate for the procedure. Unfortunately, I was. If even one Doctor suggested I didn’t need surgery it I would have given me hope. No one wants to have surgery with all the risks involved. Being in the medical field at one time in my career, I established many relationships, so when I wanted to find a good physician I made sure I received several opinions by top physicians. Understanding that surgery is still a business and it’s to the doctor’s advantage to recommend it; When you read about a doctor telling a patient they ARE NOT a candidate no matter how it was delivered I would think that’s a good thing I’m sure Dr. Rawlins as the other doctors did (on the previous review) could have found just cause, but other options are available. There were a few things that finalized my decision to go with Dr. Rawlins. First, after looking at my MRI his first question was who is working with you on this i.e. neurologist etc. I told him that many of these Doctors recommended surgery but did not respond to the urgency of my issue one doctor, Dr. Gologorski who prides himself on his surgical skills (and I’m sure he’s talented, but hastiness is his shortcoming) misdiagnosed me altogether, among other things. Dr Rawlins with 30 + years told me he had to take me right away and I know he was booked for months, yet he fit me in based on the severity of condition, paralysis was setting in and I had to have an ACDF procedure (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) on my spin. I didn’t need small talk I wanted someone who was focused on ensuring I had a safe and minimally invasive procedure. Dr. Rawlins is the BEST and I wanted the best and that is what I received not only from my doctor, but the hospital as a whole. I am incredibly happy with my experience pre and post-surgery. Dr. Rawlins had me see every physician possible prior to my surgery an Internal medicine doctor and Dr, Leung who is an exceptional and very thorough neurologist hand down. Monday morning, I was ready to go. Many of my fears were put to rest. His assistant Delizabeth was perfect I felt like we knew each other for years, she was on top of everything and was very comforting! I don’t know if anyone can truly feel happy for any type of surgery, but I didn’t know what to expect so I was expecting the worse (personality trait ????), thankfully it was great really, I mean it and it because I had a surgeon who knew exactly what he was doing and cared (very calming) honestly, he is top notch! I am definitely someone who likes to keep moving and after one month I was really feeling much better, you can barely see my scar and though I’m not … More

Dr. Rawlins in kind, wise, and compassionate. He is conservative and operates only when all other modalities have been unsuccessful. He has a gentle manner with patients and family members. I highly recommend him.

I met with and spoke with several surgeons before choosing Dr. Rawlins. He is a leader in the field and has expertise and experience I found lacking in most. I had a successful spinal fusion and my recovery has been faster and far less painful than people I know who went elsewhere. I'd also like to mention, that other Dr.s I saw, insisted on doing 3 fusions which would have been life changing for me. Dr. Rawlins performed 2 disk fusions and was able to repair the 3rd. I find he and his entire staff to be thorough, informative and a pleasure to speak with. I met with and spoke with several surgeons before choosing Dr. Rawlins. Horrible experience. Glanced at my X-rays and pushed on like three spots on my back. Didn't let me explain my symptoms, just cut me off. Told me I wasn't a surgical candidate, but that he would give me the name of someone else and left the room. He never came back, so after waiting a while I figured the visit was over. I asked the front desk for the referral information, they said I had to call his main office to get it. Horrible experience. Glanced at my X-rays and pushed on like three spots on my back. This was the worst experience with a doctor I have ever had in my 57 years. The doctor was unprepared and not organized. Of the 5 minutes he took for the appointment it took him 3 minutes outside of the exam room to look for and at the MRI I had brought with me . Without any explanation or giving me a chance to describe my history and symptoms he declared that he could not see any compression of nerves. He asked if I could live with my pain and when I attempted to explain he interrupted me and said several times this was a yes or no question and commanded me to answer. The arrogance, condescending manner and disregard were unbelievable. He noticed my bag and asked me about the brand before he left the room.I was speechless. By the way, two other doctors, neurosurgeons, both recommended a laminectomy. This was the worst experience with a doctor I have ever had in my 57 years. The doctor was unprepared and not organized. Horrible bedside manner, arrogant, and rude. Came into the room and just said "Why are you here?" to someone who's had debilitating back pain for over 2 years. After explaining to him although nothing shows up in the X-ray and MRI, the pain does indeed exist and what I should do. He just told me to get a second opinion. As I sat there crying, he said "Good luck" and walked out.
