Reviews for Dr. Avery Michael Jackson III
I am a 51 yo female who had been having chronic SI joint pain for years... After trying all conservative measures including PT, pain clinic, steroid injections (that helped but quickly wore off)-- I decided to have a SI Joint Fusion. I am 95% better than where I started! It was a long haul for me during my recovery, but I am grateful for my successful outcome. I am thankful to Dr. Jackson and his entire staff (who are ALL wonderful). They helped me through my post-op blues, my healing, numerous struggles and many questions!! God Bless you and may your healing hands continie to benefit others who suffer with chronic pain. Dr. Jackson is a man of integrity and a man of faith. Highly recommend. Thank you, thank you to Cara, Quandra, Christy, Victoria (Veronica)?, and many others in the office for your kindness, patience and compassion. I do not need to take any pain meds, not even Tylenol now on a regular basis.
Absolutely amazing doctor! Staff is also wonderful.

Dr Jackson is terrible. He wanted every appointment virtual even though I was vaccinated & boosted. Only spoke to him once out of four appointments. Why is my insurance paying him when they should pay the pa’s he pawns you off to
I strongly discourage anyone from seeing Dr. Jackson. He performed 3 surgeries on me in 2021. I had a failed microdiscectomy followed by a fusion and eventually exploratory surgery of nerve roots due to ongoing pain & loss of sensation/strength that was progressive. I was worse after every surgery. I eventually received second opinions & had a 4th surgery at a large institution out of state. They found an ongoing spinal fluid leak, completely compressed nerve and a tear in the protective covering of a nerve all causing compression/pain. Many repairs were needed. Doctors disagreed with Dr. Jackson's plan saying my spine did not show inability and, in their opinions, a 2-level fusion was not needed. Also, it was very difficult to work with Dr. Jackson's office staff & a challenge to get requested documents. Many phone calls were not returned, not answered & pushed to voicemail. I was shocked to find out that every visit was recorded without my permission or knowledge.
My husband had a ruptured disk and needed surgery as soon as possible because he was starting to lose function in his right leg. Our doctor sent over the referral last Tuesday and we contacted them the following day to make an appointment to consult with the surgeon. The receptionist told us that we couldn’t make an appointment until the doctor looked at the referral and deem if he would need to see him or not. Then she further went to say that he probably wouldn’t even look at his referral until the next week MAYBE! I told her that his condition is really bad but she blew it off saying she can let him know but the timeline would probably be the same. Thankfully we were able to find another surgeon and he was able to get his surgery yesterday and is doing well. The funny part is somebody called from the office today (a WEEK later) to get more information from my husband before they showed the referral to the doctor so he still hasn’t even looked at it!! This is the same referral we gave to the other surgeon so I don’t even know what else they would need. Dr. Jackson performed 3 surgeries on me in 2021 and I was worse after every surgery. Initially I was to have a simple microdiscectomy due to herniated disc-this was not a success and he recommended a L4-S1 fusion. After the fusion I had excruciating pain which progressed to the point of me being unable to sit/stand longer than 20 minute interval. Eventually, an explorative surgery was performed only to determine there were lots of problems after the fusion (residual disc material and packing material from the cage he put in rubbing and causing compression on my nerves along with thickening of my nerves). However, I STILL continued to have excruciating pain along with loss of sensation and strength that was progressive. Although my last MRI showed significant compression/stenosis Dr Jackson reported that after he spoke with the radiologist it was determined that there is in fact no significant compression. It was at this time that I was finally able to get second-opinions at 3 different large institutions. (This was a huge challenge as many surgeons will not see you once you’ve already had back procedures). I was able to have my last MRI reread and it was quickly determined that there was in fact “severe/critical narrowing”. Others physicians at large institutions told me that they would never have completed a fusion as my spine did not show instability as I was told by Dr. Jackson. (Dr. Jackson told me there was a 6mm difference on an x-ray indicating a significant amount of instability however other doctors disagreed). They also added that there were major issues after Dr. Jackson performed the fusion which resulted in significant compression/pain. I had a 4th procedure done by an orthopedic spine surgeon out of state at a large institution. It was a truly minimal invasive technique; unlike any procedure Dr. Jackson performed. What they found was an ongoing spinal fluid leak, a completely compressed nerve, a tear in the protective covering of a nerve along with boney areas adding to the compression. Many repairs were needed. In addition to having three failed surgeries performed by Dr. Jackson, working with his office staff was nearly impossible. When I requested a second-opinion none of my information was received by the hospital. I completed all my own referrals for second-opinions. I had to call Dr. Jackson’s office MULTIPLE times to get results for MRIs, needed paperwork for work, insurance approval for tests and many other things. They wouldn’t even schedule an appointment when requested saying they needed to check with the doctor. Many phone calls were never returned and eventually they wouldn’t even answer my phone calls and pushed me to voicemail. One time, they slammed the phone down on me when requesting parts of my medical record. I was also shocked to find out that EVERY single visit both in-person and virtual were recorded without my knowledge. When the PA or Dr. Jackson enter the room pretending to be typing on a laptop they are in fact recording you. I requested a copy of my virtual visits as I knew they were recorded but was shocked when every visit was on the USB. Staff were even watching in during an in-person visit. On one recording there are 2 staff members seen listening, laughing and holding up a sign saying “stop with the faces” to the PA while I’m speaking to Dr. Jackson. Also, after my last virtual visit they continued to record me and my husband in my home without my knowledge for an additional 5 minutes once the call ended-listening/recording private conversations. I will NEVER recommend Dr. Jackson to anyone. I spent months in severe, excruciating pain. I was unable to care for my 3 young children, care for my home, drive, work or even tolerate sitting. I lost my job all while experiencing the financial strain of having 4 surgeries in just 9 months. And if you visit Dr. Jackson’s home page and see lots of generic 5-star reviews, I urge you to google Dr. Avery Jackson & Detroit Free Press and read the article dated Dec.17, 2021 and form your own opinions. God Bless you, Dr.Avery Jackson! You are a true hero and so grateful for you! My kids are smiling again!!!
Very well organized office. Wait time was minimal. Everyone was very professional an explained everything to me in language I could understand.
Dr, Jackson, was able to see me right away, make a diagnosis and prescribe a treatment. He was very friendly, I would highly recommend him and his staff.
He’s a caring and giving physician. Did not to seem to care about his financial gain at all. We need more docs like him.
Excellent visit with Dr. Jackson
I love the new facility, the assistance did a great job with Q&A as well as a doctor Jackson. Each office has a 3-D modeling map in the explanation given as to why I was experiencing these very bizarre symptoms offered an explanation that was accurate believable and made sense. I’ll update after the surgery on September 14, 2021. The two previous surgeries performed by another local Flint doctorUnfortunately was short-lived. I am so glad to have Dr. Jackson in my corner as I have been in misery for over 10 years. I love the new facility, the assistance did a great job with Q&A as well as a doctor Jackson. Yes. I really liked the wonderful care that I was given
Dr Jackson and his staff are ver professional. They clearly explained the issue I was having with my back and recommended actions I could take to improve my situation. I would recommend Dr Jackson for any back issues you might have.
Very comforting and gives you all the information. Well trusted.
Dr. Avery Jackson is a very personal, caring individual who has performed Khyroplasty on me, and I'm going in for a laminectomy tomorrow. He has performed thousands of these procedures and is a neurosurgeon for whom you can trust!
Dr. Jackson performed my ACDF with great skill. He is compassionate and knowledgeable, and is willing to provide the evidence behind what he believes is the best course of action for the patient. He was very reassuring before the procedure. The office staff are respectful and hard-working as well. His PA Stefanija has been wonderful about managing my post-op pain. Professional, kind, and very knowledgeable, Super Job!
Yes the doc is compassionate and professional he explained condition and treatment well
After a traumatic brain injury which resulted from a fall, I started experiencing stroke like symptoms. I was admitted to the hospital and after imaging it was determined that I had two sub Dural hematoma’s which had slowly filled my brain with blood. I had lost the ability to walk, write and feed myself. After an emergency surgery performed by Dr. Jackson, my symptoms miraculously disappeared! I’ll never be able to thank him enough along with his wonderful staff! I got my life back.
Wonderfull Doctor and staff. Surgery was on my neck and was a complete Success.
I very much appreciated the friendly, helpful office staff. From my first phone call, I was supported in the process of getting started here. Stephania, the PA, spent more time than I expected, explained the issues well, and started me on the road to a treatment plan. Thank you staff and doctor.
Great surgeon. Kind, consise, caring. Not enough good words to tell how much I appreciate him. He has a kind and caring staff. Wouldn't go to any one else. His staff actually answers the phone.
His billing people don't know there job I quit going there. Kept getting billed when I didn't owe. I had to call my insurance Co myself and tell them what to code and still don't get it. They input when they get checks from insurance co.. My insurance Co says I don't owe..
Treatment received by Dr. Jackson & his entire staff has been of the highest quality & done with great compassion & caring for my needs.
Dr. Jackson and his staff were great, from start to finish. Dr. Jackson and his staff prayed before my surgery and it put my mind at ease. Half way through the surgery he came out and told my wife what was going on and how I was doing. I recommend him to anyone, they are top notch.
Was a good surgeon. Was encouraged that he was a Christian and he prayed with me before my surgery. I felt he was knowledgeable and I felt comfortable with him. His PA was very good and knowledgeable. Good experiences with the outpatient care.
All my care was above and beyond . His office was very pleasant and caring
Absolutely amazing staff. Dr. Jackson has truly been a blessing to my family and I!
Dr. Avery saw me and unfortunately I was a critical patient that needed surgery quickly. I only wish I wouldn't have let that route my course for him to do my surgery, but unfortunately I did and did not get a second opinion. He had to cut me both front and back and when I woke up I had nerve damage in my arm that I am still suffering with. Dr. Jackson has a great bedside manner and even said a prayer with me, but after having to see another surgery after a surgery that was not successful I was told by two other Drs who review my reports that I should not have been cut both front and back and there were issues with how the screws and cage was placed and they had to go in and take everything out and redo the entire surgery. I have heard numerous negative feedback and only wish I would have gotten a second opinion and sought out a more skilled dr for my very complicated case.
Virtual visit handled all of my concerns
Dr. Avery was amazing dr! He treated me with respect and listened to me. He got my surgery going super fast and did awesome job. I had neck surgery and I barely have a scar!
Dr. Jackson performed a fusion of my L4, L5; and S in 2005. He actually took movies of his minimal invasion surgery. Fifteen years later because he drove screws into my nerves instead of the vertebrae, I can hardly walk. I have had 7 subsequent operations, but nerve damage can't be reversed. Worse doctor ever. Dr. Avery Jackson III what an awesome doctor & excellent after care. I was in the hospital for 10 days after major back surgery that took 5 hours, everyday one of Dr. Jackson assistants came to see me & address my needs, health concerns, & pain management. The one thing that made me have so much respect for this awesome doctor, he cane to see us & explain what was about to happen, then he said so proudly can we pray before they take you to surgery? As a born again christian I was only to blessed to accept this offer. Now right there getting ready to go to major surgery Dr Jackson, myself & my wife had a prayer meeting praying for each other & what a prayer meeting it was. So not only an awesome, surgeon that takes care of his patents but a born again christian not afraid to pray for his patients & post surgery care that was great I couldn't ask for more. If you are looking for one great surgeon you don't need to look any further this is your surgeon right here. I could go on with nothing but great accolades for Dr Avery Jackson III God truly blessed my family with this man of God. Dr. Avery Jackson III what an awesome doctor & excellent after care. Have healed fine getting strength back
On Nov. 22, 2010, Dr. Jackson III literally, with the helping hand of God, saved my husband's life after a near miss with death following a sudden & substantial AVM hemorrhage. Am happy to report nearly 8 years later, that hubby of mine is walking, talking, working-out at the gym, enjoying his kids and ten beautiful grandchildren ranging in age from 17 to 3 mo. What we loved most about Dr. Jackson III was that he was as much "faith-minded" as we were. Without a doubt, it made all the difference!
I am 12 hours out of a 3 vertebrae laminectomy, sitting at my computer, almost pain free, it's maybe a 2. I thought the PA was crazy when she told me they would send me home on Tylenol. She was right! I really only need Tylenol but they did change and send me home with Ultram. Took one pill just to "stay ahead of the pain" but it wasn't needed. Dr Jackson is a stellar surgeon, relates well to his patients & their families & best of all to me, before my surgery he asked if he could pray with me!
Just wanted to update a former review of Dr. Jackson's incompetent operating skills. My current pain is 9.5 and no injections, physical therapy, etc. have reduced that pain. I am currently pursuing another operation as I can't stand the pain. The MRI shows that several of the screws used by Jackson were 1/4_1/2 inches too long and are close to penetrating blood vessels and nerves. Never consider jackson for any surgery if you value your life.
Very disappointed as a patient. I was misdiagnosed as needing back surgery and after about a half a dozen visits I got a second opinion and was referred to you of M hospital and diagnosed with ALS. In addition their Billing System is a mess. I was first overcharged, then refunded, and now eight months later in October am still receiving bills for co-pays from February.
The aftercare leaves alot to be desired, went 2 days without any pain meds 5 days after surgery.
My husband had 3 discs removed. The second day in he was in such pain he called to get something to help. He had to call four times! His script ran out in 5 days, when he called to get something, the on call told him to go to emergency room! After- care from Dr. Jackson staff is nonexistent. There is no compassion!
My bad experience is with the poorly trained staff and the follow-up care. As part of the process to begin a regimen of Forteo for osteoporosis, I received an order for blood work for Forteo Labs. This order did not specify fasting or non-fasting. I had to call his staff and wait for a return call to find out. When I arrived at the lab for this blood work (at 7:15 am, fasting)I found out that the blood should be drawn between 8 and 10 am. Communication from the office could have saved me time.
