About Dr. Alan G Shepard
Reviews for Dr. Alan G Shepard
Terrible and is a bold face liar. Doesn't beleive or listens to my issues. Should be sued and fired.
Terrible person and in no way shape or form would I call him a "doctor". Miss diagnosed me and tokd me I was lying about my symptoms. Should be sued along with Northwestern and license to practice revoked.
I have been in chronic pain for 2 years. I went in for a follow-up visit with Dr. Shepard today after being just released from the hospital for it a couple of days ago. He came into my room and said, "tell me what's happening". So I started telling my story. After the first sentence, his cell phone started ringing. Dr. Shepard answered it and stepped out of the room. Dr. Shepard had a phone conversation that I could overhear for about 5 minutes. It sounded like he was discussing a matter that could wait until after our visit. Dr. Shepard came back in and I was understanding for this once and started telling my story over again. As I was telling my story he started replying to text messages during our conversation. I kept going, but then his cell phone rang again. He answered and stood up to begin to walk out of the room and I promptly asked, "do we need to reschedule?". He said, "no, I'm sorry, I'll be right back" and then walked out into the hall again. Part of my pain is that it is triggered by talking. I had to keep repeating myself. Dr. Shepard also was asking me questions about my hospital visit that he should have known already by reading my chart. He was asking me questions about why I was taking certain medications that he himself prescribed to me. It was obvious that Dr. Shepard's mind was in another place and not focused on me during our visit. This is not how a patient should be treated. During a visit, I believe that the doctor should be focused and intently listening to their patient. Multitasking in this manner is not patient focused. The office visit is a very important time for someone that has been in pain for so long. Patients deserve a doctor's undivided attention. Several weeks later, a neurosurgeon informed me that Dr. Sheppard was treating me for Trigeminal Neuralgia when instead I have atypical facial pain and trigeminal neuropathy. Dr. Sheppardâs advice was that I begin taking an opioid. It is a good thing I didnât, because it was not needed.
Dissmissive, spends 15 min with you, doesn't care what you say only looks at the chart and doesnt' listen to patients. Misdaignosed.
Doesn’t listen, doesn’t do thorough evaluation, rushes you. Doesn’t seem to care. Not interested in helping it seems
Fails to listen, fails to communicate, fails to explain, fails to analyze. Horrible experience, avoid. Shepard's finest quality: Shepherding you out of his office very quickly
Didnt listen to me. Very disappointing visit.
This visit to Dr. Shepard it probably took no more than 5 minutes, he was very disrespectful to me , ignoring all my explanation and questions about my situation . he was so arrogant as I was speaking to him he was watching my file I guess on the computer and for what I saw he just follow what there was on my file instead of applying his suppose knowledge on neurology and his care and concern to me . This visit did not help me at all I'll look for a second opinion to me this guy does not deserve even one star, so he does not deserve to work for Northwestern medical neither , so sorry for him.
Bedside manner is dismissive
Dismissive of patient (myself) concerns, spent minimal time to complete a differential which lasted perhaps 5 minutes. Presented 1 treatment option and nothing else. Left him and now see another neurologist at rush.
Honestly one of the best neurologists out there, PA's are done in one day. I work in pharm and some MD's take longer than the standard wait time. His team is super efficient and responds for refills in basically the same day. He addresses all my questions and never leaves me with questions unanswered. Dr.Shepard is super caring. Definitely recommend. Honestly one of the best neurologists out there, PA's are done in one day. I work in pharm and some MD's take longer than the standard wait time. Absolutely wonderful experience. He listened, asked me questions and gave me a couple of options for treatment of my migraines taking the time to explain what the difference was with each. Overall a wonderful experience with him, his nurses and the entire team.
ARROGANT. not professional.Does not respect patients pr other drs.
I would strongly recommend Dr. Shepard continue to work on his listening and empathy skills. Unfortunately, the appointment was not helpful, and he was dismissive and quite condescending when I asked questions. For example, he prescribed a medication that I was previously given by another physician. When I informed him that this medicine did not previously work for me, he prescribed it anyway. Needless to say, I saw Dr. Shepard once, and didn't return. Having years of experience is never an excuse for speaking to a patient like a second-class citizen.
My visit with Dr Shepard was disappointing. He seemed distracted the entire visit. He asked questions but didn't seem to listen to the answers. I was asked to walk around the room when I went to say something he was looking at his phone. He then said this is an important call and walked out of the room. When he came back gave me a diagnosis and when I questioned it he said well no one really knows you came after the incident. Someone else could make a different diagnosis but it is just an opinion. He told me come back if I had any more incidents. I cannot believe he is on staff at Northwestern where care is always given by a caring well informed doctor who wants to get to the root of the problem. You can usually get into him quickly take the time and wait for a doctor that may be interested in patient care and not his phone.

He was totally dismissive of my questions or concerns . I was referred to him to address neuropathy and cognitive functioning . When asked about the cause and treatment of my neuropathy he replied, “ I don’t know what it is maybe your shoes are typed .” He never examined me . In regards to cognitive functioning he replied “ there is nothing wrong with your brain, just write things down you don’t remember. He met with me a total of 10 min. Arrogant and an exaggerated sense of self importance. The worst experience I have had with a medical professional. He was totally dismissive of my questions or concerns . Dr Shepard may excel and correctly diagnose some patients, but my limited experience as his patient was alarming that I'm thankful to have moved on for a second opinion. He missed glaring signs a serious taumatic brain injury. I recently acquired my patient notes and I was deeply disturbed by the numerous contradictions and inaccuracies. I'm grateful that even in my highly comprised brain status,my instincts directed me to go in a different direction. He is an amazing doctor. I went to so so many doctors and he solved my issue during the first appointment. He really saved me. And like the others said, he communicates quickly.
Dr Sheppard was uninterested in my symptoms, gave me medications that increase my symptoms. He was very distant, and did not give me any information on how to solve my medical issue. I would not recommend him as a neurologist to see.

Dr. Alan G. Shepard, MD did nothing more than make me mad. I got the feeling he was not paying attention. This might be due to the fact that both times I saw him, he was paying more attention to his phone than me.
Fantastic doctor! When I have questions, he communicates with me very quickly.
Top Neurologist. Very welcoming and knowledgeable. I have been a patient for years.
I have been a patient of Dr. Shepards for years. Amazing doctor. Kowledgeable, very responsive and open minded!

Not even worth one star
I loved this guy. He was so attentive and really seemed to care. Don't know why one reviewer didn't like him.
The new location for Dr. Shepard is perfect. He is one of THE top neurologists and truly is up to date on all the new research. I am one to want a kind person, but more so one who truly is a subject matter expert. Fortunately with Dr. Shepard I get both!

I recently started seeing Dr. Shepard and have now switched to another doctor. He seemed disinterested and disengaged both in person and via email. He is a poor communicator and doesn't listen with empathy or with curiosity -- he seems mostly interested in being done. My biggest concern was not that he wasn't "warm and fuzzy" however, it's that I was worried that his unwillingness to listen to my symptoms would affect the quality of care I received from him.
My primary doc found a neurological problem so told me to see a neurologist. When I saw Dr. Shepard, he did not examine me, but only had me walk 6 feet and back (walking was part of the issue) so didn't find the problem. He didn't ask many questions nor listen much and had his back to me about half the time. Then he didn't explain his conclusions and diagnosed me with what my primary doc had written on the script. My primary doctor examined and diagnosed me more than Dr. Shepard.

I am not sure if Dr. Shepard was having an off day, but my experience with him was unfortunate. I always fear that a laundry list of symptoms such as these will get me dismissed as batty straight away, and Dr. Shepard didn't disappoint. The conclusion of the visit was his insistence that I see a psychiatrist, after half an hour of Uh-huhs. Looking at my patient summary it almost seemed that he had interviewed someone else entirely; doctor received this summary and had to laugh about it.
