Dr. William A Houck III

Dr. Houck can come across as a bull in a china shop. He's not. Deep down inside, Dr. Houck is a very caring, compassionate oncologist, who strives to give his patients the best quality of life possible. He also takes the time to listen, willing to answer questions and concerns, keeps up with the latest research, etc.

He explained my blood testing, etc. to me and my fiancee very well. I would recommend him highly.

I met Dr. Houck in the ER with a hemotological condition. He was kind, knowledgeable, and, as the ER doctor said "the best blood guy in the area!" Indeed, everyone in that practice is top-notch. My condition is well-maintained, and I know I am in good hands!

Dr. Houck is a compassionate caring oncologist. From my first appointment he was straight forward with me and I appreciated that direct approach immensely. I knew when he explained my treatment protocol with mapping it out and giving understandable verbiage along with the map,( which I still have), he was going to be right there and answer any questions I would have. My confidence in his ability reached 100%! A cancer diagnosis is one no person wants to hear, his confidence and listening skills help me navigate this unknown territory for me. His team is amazing and always friendly and supportive during the process of cancer therapies.A big shout out to Laurie who encouraged me on days that were hard. Absolutely! At my last visit, Dr. Houck listened to my concerns and addressed them all. He has always done this. From the first diagnosis, five years ago, he always explained everything to me so I could understand what was going on at that time and what to expect in the future. Very comforting.

Dr. William Houck III tends to come across very condescending and arrogant. He told me back in March that I have out lived my life expectancy with Stage IV Breast Cancer and Secondary Bone Cancer ( Average is two - 2.5 years. ) Dr. Houck III said it's progression and to suck it up.

Terrible. Why does someone with so little compassion go into medicine? Dr. Houck did not take the time to let my cousin know the ramifications of her treatment. She is now in excruciating pain. Dr. Houck told her she had outlived her life expectancy -- she is in her fifties. SERIOUSLY?! His lack of kindness is appalling. Find someone else.

Dr. Houck III is one of the most compassionate doctors I have ever encountered. He also has the heart of a teacher - speaking clearly and succinctly to address the reason for the patient's problem(s). We would, and already have, recommended Dr. Houck and his staff.

Staff was polite, respectful of my time, efforts, privacy. Absolutely confident the doctor and his staff will continue taking great care of their patients.

Very negative, not helpful, was condescending and not at all someone I would ever consider dealing with.

Dr. Houck has been overseeing my care for the past three years. He is an excellent, kind and caring doctor who will tell you like it is. I find him to have a funny sense of humor. He always explains well and doesn't rush your appointment. I highly recommend him and totally trust him to help me make decisions regarding my care.

Excellent care from Dr. Houck and his staff!

Dr Houck and his team are not only knowledgeable, but warm and supportive. They explain things in terms a non medical person can understand without sounding like they are dumbing things down.

The facility, the staff, the routine/care, and the doctor are top notch! It is obvious that they care about the welfare of their patients. Dr. Houck is very detailed and makes sure I understand everything he told me. I am glad I was referred to him by Dr. Bender (who also thinks he is a pretty good doctor).

From the moment you step into the office you are treated with the utmost kindness; respect; and sincere caring from everyone. My Mom Betty is so blessed to have Dr. Houck and his staff taking care of her medical needs since her breast cancer diagnosis. I could not imagine having anyone else take care of my mom...Dr. Houck; Dr. Laurie and their staff "are the best". If anyone reading this has been recently diagnosed with breast cancer or any form of cancer, please consider Shenandoah Oncology to take care of you. You will not be disappointed. Dr Houck's casual approach puts one at ease right away. He explains all aspects of his patients' issues as if you were the most important patient in his practice. His patients have confidence that they are receiving excellent advice and treatment

I have been seeing Dr Houck since 2015 when I was first diagnosed with MCL. He has always been clear, precise, and informative. He stays up to date with the latest research about treatments and always gives me options. Plus he is personable and funny. I am grateful that he is my doctor.

Dr. Houck was easy to talk to. Explained things I did not know but never talked down to me. Staff very friendly and informative Only complaint in Sept 2020 in VA is in the "chemo room" many patients (not staff) are wearing masks incorrectly or beneath their chins.

Dr. Houck was very thorough with my first visit and answered all my questions without sugarcoating anything...which I appreciated very much.

Dr. Houck III is the best. He listens, is proactive with your treatment, and is up to date on all the latest information available regarding your particular disease. I highly recommend this practice.

I was transfered into the care of Dr. Wm. Houck, III, in May of 2016, after a previous surgery for possible ovarian cancer and a month of testing for the potential gastro-intestinal origin site of pseudo-moxoma peritonal cancer. Being under his care has been a pleasure ever since, with relaxed, and encouraging office visits over the past three years. He was able to clearly explain chemo choices for this fairly rare cancer and even suggested getting a second opinion from John Hopkins (where there was a specialist.) His choice of treatment regime paralleling that for colon cancer was seconded in Baltimore, and we have successfully kept my slow-growing cancer in a dormant state for more than two years now! Dr Houck has been my doctor for almost 4 years. I have a great deal of confidence in him; through his knowledge and efforts, my cancer is in remission. And I love his sense of humor.

From the moment my mother and I walked into the oncology facility and on to Dr. Houcks office we were treated with such kindness and caring. Everyone made my mom feel so special. Once we met with Dr Houck and his medical team my mom and I knew we had come to the right place for her care. William Houck III, MD is probably the finest physician with whom I have ever dealt. He is extremely thorough and caring and will leave no stone unturned when treating his patients. His demeanor is both calming and reassuring. However, one of the traits he possesses that I have found most appealing is his sense of humor. Especially in the field of oncology, patients naturally have an unmitigated fear of their diagnoses. Therefore, when a physician can remain calm and at the same time bring a bit of levity into the conversation, the patient usually responds by relaxing enough that he or she is able to assimilate the information that Dr. Houck III is giving to him/her. He (Dr. Houck) also takes as much time as is needed to make sure that the patient, and perhaps the patient’s family, understand what will be needed to go forward with any necessary treatment. I've been a patient at Shenandoah Oncology since 2006 and with Dr. Houck III since 2014. I couldn't ask for a better oncologist! Dr. Houck, III is very knowledgeable, caring and understanding. He will go the extra mile to make sure your diagnosis and treatment are handled in the best possible way. He and his NP, Laurie Hudson, make a wonderful team. I am always able to reach someone and be seen quickly, if necessary. I cannot say enough about Dr. Houck III. I feel very lucky to have been paired with him at the beginning of my treatment process. He is an incredibly dedicated doctor, and is always generous with his time in appointments. He always takes my concerns seriously, and was more than willing to pursue chemotherapy options that I was interested in, even if he ended up being right about possible side effects. Am very satisfied with it!

I’ve only had one office visit so far, and I couldn’t be more pleased. With having tests done etc., Dr. Houck has personally called with results and reassuring me along the way. I feel I can put my trust into his decisions for me. I will know more as I continue this journey..

He was though.

Dr Houck III is my oncologist- I had Ovarian Cancer in 2014 and his knowledge of new chemotherapy treatments for this condition saved my life! He is always kind and caring- he listens to your needs- both during treatment and following treatment- and does whatever he can to help. I would highly recommend him to anyone walking through the overwhelming process of cancer treatment.

Great facility, greater staff. The atmosphere is very upbeat in the waiting areas with strangers interacting like they were old friends. The doctor explained things in words I understood and took his time to listen to my concerns and answer all my questions. Strange to say but I enjoyed my visit.
