About Dr. William A Friedman
Reviews for Dr. William A Friedman
Pleasant staff. Made me feel comfortable and confident.
Bill Friedman is by far the best neurosurgeon in America and most likely the world. After months of seeing expert after expert who all said my wife Maryann would die we made the best move of our lives and went to see Dr. Friedman. No words can ever express our gratitude for his God given abilities as my wife is the living proof he is truly the "Miracle Maker" Anyone who says different is just plain ignorant. Bill is in the business of saving lives not codling... I thank God every single day this great man is in the world. There is absolutely NOTHING I would not do for him upon his request, PERIOD. I was referred to William Friedman, MD , neurosurgeon at Shanes Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Making the appointment to see Friedman was my first mistake. You will see why I hesitate to call him “Dr.”shortly. I was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma ( benign tumor behind my right ear canal.). I saw Friedman and made the appointment to have the tumor dissolved or shrunken via radiation. The day of my appointment, I was put in a halo, they screwed it into my skull. I was clamped into the machine. My head wasn’t put in straight, my head was put in crooked. I mentioned this to Friedman, he said that it didn’t matter and that it was ok. Well, it wasn’t ok. A month or so later, I began experiencing numbness and burning on the right side of my face. I went back to see him to see if he could fix the problem, his reply was “ live with it”. As it turned out, he completely missed the tumor and fried my trigeminal nerve. It is now about 10 years later and I am living with intense burning, pain and itching in my forehead, temple and jawline. I still have the tumor. This quack has ruined my life. The slightest breeze, like a ceiling fan, is agony to my face. I take several medications to help, but they don’t do much. I have been to Emory Hospital in Atlanta and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio. My doctor there said they MIGHT be able to do brain surgery but there is a possibility I could have a stroke on the operating table. So I’ve decided not to have surgery. I can’t risk having another stroke. I already had a retinal occlusion in my right eye which left me blind in that eye. That happened 16 years ago. I should never have gone to see Friedman, biggest mistake of my life. I have to live with this misery the rest of my life while he enjoys his airplane and a wonderful life. I am 71 now and hopefully have many more years to live but believe me, they will not be happy and healthy ones. Thank you Friedman, how many other lives have you ruined? I lost 34 pounds because of Trigeminal Neuralgia. I couldn’t eat because of the pain. Previous Neurologists had me on pills which did nothing for the problem but alleviated some of the pain. I found myself sleeping my life away. My son found Dr Friedman & got me an appointment. After checking my records, he described a surgery he does that could fix the problem. I never hesitated .......I wanted my life back. I had the surgery a month ago & I am now pain free & eating anything I want. I would recommend anyone with Trigeminal Neuralgia to check out Dr. Friedman & his team of surgeons if you want to dump the pills & start living a normal life! On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the worst pain I've experienced in my 74 years) my pain was a 16! I was approximately one week away from being confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Dr. Friedman studied my MRI and within a few minutes said, "I know what the problem is and I can solve it". That took place on a Thursday and Dr. Friedman scheduled my back surgery for the following Tuesday. After surgery I was completely PAIN FREE and, after about 20 minutes in the recovery room, was able to walk down the hosptial halls. To this day I have been 100% pain free thanks entirely to Dr. Friedman's skill as a surgeon. He gave me my life back and I couldn't be more grateful!!
This man saved my life with fixing 3 different types of neuralgia, after 3 years of treatment from others. I say a prayer for him every morning that I wake up pain free.
Very rude, dismissive, avoided follow up calls, terrible patient interaction. I would NOT recommend William Friedman.
His first surgery on my back provided no benefit. In his second surgery on me he slipped and severed my L5 nerve, disabling my left foot. He then strung me along by telling me it would take about 3 years to recover, during which the statute of limitations expired on taking him to court. I’m left partially disabled and without recourse. I strongly recommend avoiding this arrogant and seemingly deceptive surgeon. His first surgery on my back provided no benefit. Dr. Friedman did thoracic surgery on me in 2013. The surgery was to eliminate pain from a damaged intercostal nerve. Dr. Friedman told me he would do two levels and the only side effect I was told by Dr. Friedman was I would be numb in my right rib cage. I agreed because that was where my pain was. Dr. Friedman told me I would have an incision of 1 1/2 to 2”. When I awoke from surgery I was in severe pain, not numb like Dr. Friedman has told me. I found out I had a 6” incision with 26 staples in my back and Dr. Friedman had operated on 4 levels instead of the 2 he had told me. I did not see Dr. Friedman until my 4 week follow up, after the staples had been removed. I had to ask to see Dr. Friedman because I was not being told why I was in even more pain than before the surgery. Dr. Friedman finally came into the room and he asked what seemed to be the problem. I told him I was in even more pain than before the surgery and was wanting answers. Dr. Friedman put his hand in my face and said, “let me stop you right there, my surgery was a success and you are numb”. He then started out of the room. My husband stopped him and told him you need to explain to my wife what you did and why she is in so much pain. Again I tried to talk to him and ask why I was in so much pain ant not numb like he had told me. Again Dr. Friedman put his hand in my face and told me if I was still in pain you should contact a pain management doctor and he walked out of the room. I have never talked to him again. My advise to anyone who is considering Dr. Friedman to do surgery on them is to run away from this so called doctor. He is extremely dangerous. My life has come to a halt. My pain is debilitating. I have missed so many family get togethers, weddings.. It is so hard to do small tasks. I have found out since my surgery by Dr. Friedman, he has operated on the wrong side of a person’s brain and have talked with several others who’s life has been ruined by Dr. Friedman. I originally was taken to north Florida , I was diagnosed with a brain tumor , dr sherr never offered any other options besides a craniotomy, I set out for more opinions I scheduled with dr Friedman, he was terrific, I completely trusted his advice which was gamma knife for my brain tumor , I did read some not so good reviews and decided I don’t care if he isn’t super friendly I want a neurosurgeon with experience and skills , if you are debating on not seeing him because of a few bad reviews make appointment with him he has a excellent team , I found him to be very pleasant, my gamma knife went very well I originally was taken to north Florida , I was diagnosed with a brain tumor , dr sherr never offered any other options besides a craniotomy, I set out for more opinions I scheduled with dr Friedman, he was terrific, I completely trusted … More
A Tallahassee Neurologist told me I would die without neck surgery. Dr. Friedman reviewed the MRIs and said I had a normal 58 year old neck and no surgery was needed. He referred me to a neurologist in his department and she diagnosed me with Inflammatory peripheral neuropathy attacking the brachial plexi. In the end there is little that can be done about about it, since Gabapentin didn't help. At least I was not subjected to unnecessary surgery. I’m 25 years old and Dr. Friedman diagnosed me with trigeminal neuralgia and immediately recommended a surgery to fix it after a lot of dead ends with other doctors. He gave me the MVD surgery and I ate on the left side of my face the first time in a year on the night of surgery! He is a miracle worker! I had endured trigeminal neuralgia for 5 years. The pain was getting more severe and more often. I feel Dr. Friedman is a miracle worker. I had the microvascular decompression surgery done 8 weeks ago. For me it is a miracle to no longer have any pain. He truly has given me my life back. I can now eat, drink, talk, brush my teeth, etc. without any pain. I see some negative comments here, and I am quite shocked. I found none of these to be true. I had to go in for back surgery and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Dr. Friedman by far exceeded my expectations. I went from having major back pain to having none at all and I’m so glad I had Dr. Friedman and his team taking care of me. I highly recommend him.
He removed my husband's anaplastic astrocytoma grade 3 and he has had no recurrence. Great surgeon. My husband is back working and he had his craniotomy in 2015
I could not have been more pleased with the way Dr Friedman and his team treated me. I would highly recommend him.
Horrible patient relationship skills, spent less than 15 minutes with me, was terribly dismissive and told me I didn't even have the affliction I went to him to consult for. His diagnosis was wrong, have been diagnosed by several other drs. I left the 15 min meeting with him feeling hopeless and confused and in tears, not that he cared not to mention driving several hours for the consult. No offer of help from him at all, just dismissed, goodbye! I can't believe he's allowed to practice at such a fine hospital. I personally did not see Dr. Friedman; my father did. My father was referred to him after sudden onset back pain several weeks after a biopsy of his prostate. The oncologist was concerned that my father had an infection of the spine. Dr. Friedman dismissed that concern and diagnosed him with stenosis. He reportedly left the room without asking about my dad’s history with the pain, answering my parents’ questions, or prescribing anything for the pain. And now, after many months of debilitating pain, in the middle of his cancer treatment, my father presented to the Shands Jacksonville ER with fever and disorientation. He was finally properly diagnosed with an infection on the spine and is finally being treated for it by Shands Jacksonville. I’m sure Dr. Friedman was a brilliant neurosurgeon at one point in his life, but his poor bedside manner really has damaging consequences for his patients. If he had spent more time with my father during that visit, this issue may have been resolved much sooner and before my father’s cancer treatment began. Dr. Freidman and his team are wonderful. polite and on time,. it was comforting to have him operating on me. I was late for the follow up appointment and he saw us anyway. We only waited 10 min.
I had an outstanding experience with Dr. Friedman. First of all, the UF Neuromedicine Facility is very efficient and well run. Making appointments, confirming appointments, parking, checking in, etc.. was very easy. Staff are friendly and respectful. Dr. Friedman gave me very clear and helpful explanations about my condition and options. I would certainly see him again.
I suffered with Trigeminal Neuralgia for 20 years, the attacks were coming more frequently and getting progressively worse. I was at the end of the road. The Drs in my area Brevard County were just loading me up with anti seizure meds which just made me stupid. I was desperate. I happened to run into the granddaughter of a previous patient & I was finally in the right track. I had my surgery 1/4/2011, the day I got my life back. I will never get those bad years back but I am very very greatful.
After exhausting conservative treatment, I met with Dr. Friedman to discuss surgical options for trigeminal neuralgia. He recommended and I underwent a MVD with great success. No more pain, no complications and full recovery. Would definitely recommend to others. Do not expect long conversations, hand-holding or candling. He is a SURGEON and has a full staff to tend to lesser patient needs.

Dr. Friedman an his medical staff are amazing. As a medical professional myself, I researched surgeons prior to having this mandated surgery. He and his staff thoroughly explained in detail the process. I felt secure and safe throughout the surgery and post-op. I needed to call the office a few times after surgery. They were courteous and attended to all of my needs, including insurance questions. While I am glad that I do not need a follow-up procedure with him, I would call on him again.

I would highly recommend Dr. Friedman to my friends and family. He is an expert at Microvascular Decompression surgery. I had facial spasms for over 18 years and finally got the courage to visit with several surgeons to discuss treatment options. Six weeks ago Dr. Friedman performed my MVD surgery and I am now completely spasm free. I could not be happier and have my smile back. He is caring and most of all very skilled with an excellent team behind him.

November 4, 2016 Dr. Freidman performed a Microvascular Decompression procedure on me. I had suffered with Trigeminal Neuralgia for 16 years. The surgery was successful and 12 days after surgery the facial pain and seizures were gone. During the initial meeting I felt the caring attitude of Dr. Freidman and his team, I was able to discuss the pain I was having with someone who truly understands. Dr. Freidman is highly skilled, knowledgeable, and compassionate.

I suffered from Trigeminal Neuralgia and was in the most agonizing pain. Nothing would ease this pain. I was referred to Dr. Friedman and he did surgery July 8, 2016. I have no more pain. Wish I could have had this procedure done a long time ago. I received excellent health care. Dr. Friedman helped me get my life back. I was unable to talk at times and the pain was unbearable. Thank you Dr. Friedman.
Upon the suggestion of a different local neurosurgeon, I was in physical therapy and pilates for a year as I became progressively weaker. I contacted Dr. Friedman's office, was seen within a week and within 2 days of being seen I was in surgery for spinal cord compression in my neck. The previous physician had the same imaging studies and just misdiagnosed my condition. My symptoms are almost completely resolved and I am walking without a walker. I am so grateful for Dr. Friedman's care.

STAY FAR AWAY!!!!! My experience started with a sales pitch that was choreographed to include all concerns and included members of his staff (Yolanda) after asking about other surgeons he seemed annoyed and dissmissive. Thinking this guy has to be good I regretfully went ahead with a tumor removal. He made it very clear that pain is not an issue in his neuro dpt. and his nurse Yolanda did the same, I was waiting to go into surgery then started reading these horrible reviews and literally almost ran out of the hospital. In the OR he walked in and would not acknowledge me; the Anastasiaoligist said he does not acknowledge his patients b4 surgery; again I wanted to run!! I was out then woke up unable to talk. The pain was so intense I think I would of chosen a gun shot over his work and yet the promised pain control never came, not even a concern about why it hurt so bad. He never came down to check on me; I don't need him to hold my hand I need someone who actually cares. Not a doctor running a butcher shop.. This review is written 3 months after surgery there is no anger towards William he is just a horrible person. I never saw him once after the surgery. At my checkup they called the day b4 and said "he has an emergency OR SOMETHING". Just stay away, he did nerve damage which caused unbearable pAin during their "sales pitch" I was told to call for pain meds anytime. They wrote one script then Yolanda told me to take excedrine Migrane. I had to turn to local dr s and the er for the pain. I also could not convey my experience to Yolanda because Will Friedman caused nerve damage so bad that all I could do was mumble. Plenty of good ns out there will is not one of them. Will is an ego driven assembly line surgeon. And he is proud of it. Do your health a favor run from will Friedman. STAY FAR AWAY!!!!! This guy is a complete joke! He claimed there was nothing wrong after 4 radiologist disagreed. His exact words when asked how four other doctors could be wrong "it's a jungle out there!" He spent less than 5 minutes in the room and less than one minute reviewing the MRI. He wanted me to know he was the Chief of Neurology. I think that title has gone to his head. Take our advice. My husband had microvascular decompression surgery in January 2014 his Doctor was Doctor William Friedman. We almost made the mistake of a lifetime because we read some negative reviews, and thought about choosing a different Doctor. This is why we are writing today to help others in our position. My husband tried medicine first which only helped for a short time. The pain was so excruciating he could barley drink water. His pain was on the right side of his head and brought him to his knees when he tried to eat. We called Doctor Friedmans office and they got us in right way. We had a four hour drive from where we live.Doctor saw my husband the next day. Did I mention he was not even supposed to be in the office that day? He explained the choices to my husband and the risks. He did the surgery the next day. He came in and checked on my husband soon after surgery, and his team of Doctors could not have been more attentive to my husband who is 70 years old.The nurses treated us like family. My husband ate dinner the night of surgery without the jaw pain. Doctor Friedman doesn't have time to hold your hand because he is in surgery helping someone else in pain. However if you need him he and his staff will be there. Thank you Doctor Friedman. God Bless you for taking care of my husband.
