Three months prior to my 40th birthday, Dr. Witham performed a one level spinal fusion at L4/L5. The surgery was absolutely transformative. I got A+ medical care and Dr. Witham always answered my questions. I highly recommend him! I believe he is upfront and will tell you if he can help you or not.

Dr. Witham came to my first appointment with a plan. He really seemed to care, have a good understanding of my condition, and know what he was doing. But there were also red flags, mainly he would become annoyed or dismissive when I asked specific questions about my condition and about my upcoming surgery. I figured that Hopkins is #1 in Neurosurgery and everything would be okay. I was wrong. I had a failed back surgery. Dr. Witham completely ignored follow-up care and and dismissed my symptoms. Those red flags I saw at my first two pre-surgical appointments ultimately became his standard of care: rude, arrogant and dismissive almost to the point of abusive.

Dr. Witham introduced himself and my case in an intelligent, composed, and knowledgeable manner. But from that first appointment on his lack of regard for my care and quality of life became incredibly apparent. With an unfavorable surgical outcome, Dr. Witham became belligerent, cold, and dismissive. He failed to review the reports and treatment of several medical professionals on my team. Dr. Witham knows how to treat treat his patients with dignity and respect, he just chooses not to.

OK, I never got to see him; first I had to "qualify" for an appointment; gave all the information; weeks later nobody called back; after I called again they said I was qualified and to call for an appointment; I tried several times, left messages, nothing Sleeping on your laurels, JH

Dr. Witham has always been there for me along with his great assistant Christina! I have recommended him to friends and will continue to do so.

Dr.Witham is a great surgeon and a very caring individual. He performed neck surgery and a few months later volunteered to attend a very complex surgery on my lumbar region. Christina, his assistant is the best! I am very grateful to both. I have recommended him to friends and will continue to do so

I received a cervical disc arthoplasty (replacement) from Dr. Witham in 2016. He did an amazing job and I am happy to report the return of strength in both my bilateral upper extremities. I am extremely glad that I chose to do the replacement vs. the fusion and Dr. Witham has been incredible.

Dr. Witham is doing God's work. Five years ago, he fixed my back using X-Stop spacers to take the pressure off two herniated discs. Six months after the surgery, I was in Afghanistan wearing 40 pounds of body armor and totally pain-free. I remain pain-free and have my life back.

In medicine as in many other fields of endeavor it is crucial to understand that there are two or three sides to every story, a patient’s expectations are always greater than the reality of their situation and most of the time the evaluation of a physician’s attitude is more of a reflection of the family of the patient and the patient himself. To throw a blanket of negativity over any physician without first explaining the entire situation is unfair. Let’s start by saying that nobody gets into Johns Hopkins University Hospital to have a tooth pulled. They receive and treat the most complicated cases from all around the world. Cases that other physicians have either messed up or refuse to treat. I am a patient of Dr. Witham and saw him after three failed spinal surgeries in my neck. He had to undo the previous surgeries and start from scratch stabilizing my spinal cord. Did I expect him to magically return me to the health of a 25-year-old? Of course not. But he stopped a continued process of deterioration within my spine. I still have pain and my ability to function is severely limited but this is not because of any maltreatment by this superb neurosurgeon. Once again a patient or a patient’s family’s expectations must always be considered prior to throwing dirt at the physician. My surgery seem to be the greatest thing that had happened to me after several back fusion. To get right to the point, I was informed that I would probably go through 9-12 of some extreme pain.I made them my past pain management clinic. I was instructed that we would deal with that when get to that, so we are that point. What I need do is speak Dr Pettyes,Rory or Dr Witham. Make no mistake I believe my surgery help I just need to speak to them what we talked about. R GAMBRELL

Although Dr. Witham came highly regarded; I would not personally recommend him after seeing him for a consultation. During my consultation; a 1/4 of his time was spent personal texting. Now one might reason that it was professionally related except I swear he played an attached video because I heard what sounded like kids coming from the phone. Turn your phone off buddy!! Especially if your going to bilk the customer for what you charged.. That would be $750!!

A friend referred us to him which I think got us in to see him quicker than it might have been...in only a week! Two weeks later my husband had surgery, ACDF on C5/6. My husband's recovery has been remarkable so far. It was on Dec. 4, 2015 and he is back to work. The best most comforting thing is that Dr. Witham remains available to us for any questions we have. We hear back from him very quickly....and that I think is rare and wonderful.
