About Dr. Susan E Mackinnon
Reviews for Dr. Susan E Mackinnon
Dr. Mackinnon is the best. She performed carpal tunnel surgery on both hands and I have Nothing but praise for her. I was told by other surgeons I would never use my hands again nor would I be able to write. My 42 yr old EMG Said I had the hands of a 75-year-old. Within six months I was writing again. With a lot of work & Astym therapy, Ive resumed all activities except knitting. This didn’t happen overnight but I don’t think it would’ve happened without Dr. Mackinnon. Dr. Mackinnon is the best. Dr. Susan Mackinnon back in 2002 put my right Arm back together along with my Hand. I'm at 85 percent use and I'm so blessed. She is Super Woman in my Book made my life what it is today. Shannon Sutter.
I watched Dr Mackinnon's video of the Saphenous nerve surgery and found it amazing and lifted my spirits with hope until I had to communicate with her staff. Staff was not helpful, and nurse Amy was rude. I sent my surgical reports as requested. I had to follow up several times being completely ignored. Finally nurse Amy spoke to me after relentless attempts. Nurse Amy said, Dr Mackinnon had nothing she could offer me at the present time. I asked why, what do I need to qualify. Same answer, Dr Mackinnon has nothing to offer at the present time. She said they worked off referrals, I asked if she would like like to speak with my primary, Amy said Yes. I provided her my primary physicians number. She said they would be in touch. I waited weeks, and called and left messages, no return call. Amy never tried to call as promised. My primary was kind enough and took the time from her busy day to call Dr Mackinnon, she was placed on hold for a half hour, finally spoke with Amy who gave my doctor the same vague answer. My doctor tried several different questions about this saphenous nerve surgery and was repeatedly told from nurse Amy, Dr Mackinnon has nothing to offer me at this time. Obviously the referral was executed from me and e from my primary physician only to be slighted by the nurse. Obviously I thought this saphenous nerve surgery might help me from chronic horrific pain. My primary found it interesting and made the effort to communicate with Dr McKinnon, only to be met with dissension or unprofessional behavior IMO. My primary said, she understood my frustrations with the office staff. We never had the opportunity to discuss what posed to be help for a difficult situation ??
I had a severe radial nerve injury and could not move my wrist, fingers, or thumb. Dr MacKinnon reviewed my case, had me what to see if the nerve would recover, then suggested a course of action. She explained everything in detail and make sure that I knew my options. She also had a great rapport with her staff. They re-elected her and she treated them well. I traveled in from WA state to see her because she was recommended by my Dr in Seattle. She made sure that she accommodated my travel. The surgery went long but she kept my husband informed and was there when I woke up. From what I understand there was more damage then was expected. I fully recovered the use of my wrist and hand within weeks of surgery. I am truly great full. I went from feeling that I would be paralyzed for life to being able to fully use my hand in a matter of weeks. I scar is long and is still healing but well worth it.
I had surgery in 2013 for nerve damage following an accident. I had lost the use of the thumb and first finger on my left hand but had full use of the other three fingers. At my appointment with Dr McKinnon, told me she was pretty sure she could restore function to the two injured fingers. After nerve and tendon transfer surgery and a year of physical therapy, I not only did not have any function of my thumb and first finger. I now could not use the other three fingers that I could previously move. Leaving my left had with zero grip and totally useless. I would not recommend Dr. McKinnon. Messed up simple cubital tunnel surgery 15 years ago, I am in constant pain and my left arm is disabled causing major life changes. All hobbies have changed including not being able to hold a book. She is egotistical and just because she is published and was interviewed on TV does not make her a good doctor. After the screwed up surgery, my next appointment was in the hall because they over scheduled. She wanted to do a pain implant which wouldn’t have helped with nerve pain. For 9 months couldn’t dress, shower, cook without help from my husband. AVOID. Very particular about what she wants from your doctors if you are out of state patient. She didn't like what my doctors had to say so would not continue care. Of course, there was no reason given. I caution you to discuss with your doctor ahead of time before scheduling with Dr. Mackinnon. She asks some weird questions on her intake forms. I advise you not to be too honest about yourself here. I am going to try Dr. Bregman in Nevada. Hope you have better luck with her. I have had bad experiences in general with University based hospitals as well so starting to think that these institutions are really looking for cases that are cut and dry for research/teaching purposes vs. treating peripheral nervous system entrapments and treating the associated pain. I had an ulner nerve that was a mess. My left arm and hand couldn’t lift hardly anything or grip much. Dr McKinnon operated by relocating the nerve. This was 20+ years ago and I have had NO PROBLEMS since. In my mind she is a genius.
she is a blessing, incredible surgeon! I took my daughter to her for almost 2 years from surgery to release. She is smart, capable, and caring.

Check out her 2015 documentary highlighting her unique techniques to bypass damaged or destroyed nerves. She is a true pioneer in her field.
Passionate, dedicated to others and by far the most amazing dr I have ever incountered.
Would not recommend Dr. Mackinnon due to the fact that her office staff got my hopes up to clean out my left arm of scar tissue - then the call that she refuses to see me not having been seen in her office. This same doctor cam highly recommended by other doctors - yet need to know her M.O.
Dr McKinnon is awesome. Great bedside manner and she knows exactly what she is doing.
I live in the Kansas City area and out of the 12 surgeons who were recommended to me, after speaking to their nurses or PAs, none wanted to tackle my problem. The one orthopedic surgeon I did see started off our conversation with "you have a unique problem to which there is no good answer". The conversation got no better from there. Numerous of the physician's nurses I did speak with knew of Dr Mackinnon by reputation and suggested I reach out to her. Since she is in St Louis it was an inconvenience but so glad we did. She is far and away the only person who grasped my entire situation and gave me the most intelligent conversation I have had since day one. I have put my faith in her and am anxious to progress to our next appointment which should tell us much. If you have a nerve issue, she is the person you need to speak with! I have had 6 trigger fingers released by Dr. MacKinnon. She is extremely professional as is her staff. I like her directness and confidence as it gives me confidence in her treatment. For anyone that questions her bedside manner I would say...do you want her to be your drinking buddy, which I doubt, or do you want her to be top in her profession and good in her diagnosis and her surgical techniques. You cannot get a better surgeon.

I sustained a severe lower trunk brachial plexus injury resulting in a flaccid useless right hand and forearm. she and her staff were very courteous and helpful. Dr MacKinnon was very knowledgeable and gave a very comprehensive evaluation with treatment and therapy options. She is a world recognized specialist in the management of brachial plexus injuries as well as peripheral nerve injuries and has trained just about everyone who does nerve transfer procedures in North America.
First will say yes Dr.MacKinnon is a great doctor. At first it was hard to get into to she is very busy. Now the thing about her bedside. Her mind is always thinking about new things and how to make recovery and the nerve work faster. I was attacked by a dog and had to have my ulnar nerve released in the underarm, elbow and wrist. She was thinking she would have to graphed my ulnar nerve to my median nerve in my hand to give me feeling in my fingers. I would see her again. 1 month out of surgery

Dr. MacKinnon is amazing. Her depth and breadth of knowledge in her field is incredible and she was funny and personable as well. She LOVES what she does and it shows. I had cut two fingers with a big knife. She had a hand fellow (Dr.) and other students with her and she explained my injury to them and me in depth using a text book. She spent a lot of time examining my fingers and, before my operation, explaining what she planned on doing depending on how bad my injury was when she looked inside.

She is a great surgeon and was able to fix my nerve pain issue. However her bedside manner is seriously lacking. It Took me 7 months to get in to her office for my initial visit. She was very thorough in explaining the issue before surgery, however after surgery she was very cold and didn't answer my questions. She did come into the room for a few minutes but seems disinterested in anything I had to say. Great surgeon did fix my issue but has a horrible beside manner.
Dr Mackinnon is a judgemental woman who got my hopes up when she reassured me on my first visit that she could help me treat my chronic pain condition. On my second visit she noticed that I am tattooed and told me point blank that she would not work on me because of this, but not before she had me go through a myriad of tests that she refused to look at.
Arrogant and not nice! I mean this lady had an ego like crazy. I was warned by several doctors that she was super arrogant and mean to everyone but she is beyond that. She is absolutely ice cold and just wanted to do surgery do surgery do surgery! She doesn't talk to you, she talks at you and it's obvious she could care less about your wellbeing.

This is a long over due Thank You to Dr. MacKinnon, I suffered for years with a inner thigh nerve pain, after years of trying to find someone to explore and diagnose the problem I found Dr. MacKinnon. She was a God sent. She is very matter of fact and did a great job asking me details of the pain. I also found her YouTube videos extremely helpful in understanding my surgery and getting a feeling of well being with her as a surgeon. I would HIGHLY recommend Her.

Dr. MacKinnon saved my daughter's future - a well regarded orthopedic doctor cut her nerve during routine meniscus surgery. It took 2 years of pain and frustration before finding Dr. MacKinnon, who in the first 10 minutes of our first visit, diagnosed the issue. Surgery was scheduled within a week and my daughter had immediate relief! She was able to pursue her active career, which would never have been possible without pain relief in her leg.

My experience has been excellent. Initial consultation was thorough with a detailed explanation of the planned surgery. Took time to answer all my questions and make me comfortable. First follow-up was also excellent with detailed instructions for me to follow. I never felt rushed or pressured nor did she or her staff ever talked down or condensing. Overall would highly recommend her.
