I absolutely adore Dr. Shinada! I searched for 2 years for a Rheumatologist that would give me straight up answers about my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had been treated by 2 other docs who gave little answers. I lived in OC and drove over an hour to try Dr. Shinada, and HE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! I didn't believe I had RA cuz my blood tests were negative. He told me to call the next time I had a flare up & he'd fit me in. He did, & I saw him & he confirmed that I did in fact have RA. Of course I cried, he comforted me & gave me options ( meds, studies that they do at USC ) and most importantly he explained everything so clearly that I felt so comfortable that I con't to do the crazy 5 fwy drive for many years. Even when my insurance changed, I paid cash to see him! That is how amazing this doctor is! His office staff is awesome! They are so kind. I have been an RN for over 30 years, and I choose my doctors carefully. I Idk why someone would ever give him a review of " 1" because this doctor is the complete pkg of knowledge & kindness. Make an appt. with him & you will see how amazing he is. I absolutely adore Dr. Shinada! He is always prompt to my appointments. He listens and is compassionate about your needs and complaints and never in a rush as some doctors are. He doesn’t dismiss any issues I have and is willing to help with whatever tests or treatments he thinks are best.

I would not recommend Dr. Shinada to anyone. If you want a provider who is professional, empathetic, and timely, I urge you to look elsewhere. I initially chose Dr. Shinada to be my rheumatologist because of the hundreds of positive reviews and his years of experience. There were a few people who seemed to have negative interactions with him, but I chose to ignore them, which I regret. Looking back at those reviews now, I can relate to the same frustrations including lack of timely follow up and responses to emails (voicemails are literally never answered), even in regards to more urgent matters like authorizations for pain medication. To me, his bedside manner was indifferent and impersonal, at most he was cordial, but there never seemed to be any empathy or genuine concern. My experience with Dr. Shinada and his team has been by far the worst -- to the point where I transferred care to a new provider.

I saw Dr. Shuntaro one time. The visit was neither bad or good. He evaluated me and ordered blood tests. He told me to message him through the patient portal when I got the blood work done, which I did. I did not receive any response or call for a follow up appt. After a few months and more symptoms I messaged him again, no response or call from USC, or Dr. Shuntaro. I am very disappointed I wasted time and drove 5 hours to see this doctor for nothing. This goes for Dr. Suntaro and the director of Rheumatology. A couple of years ago I went to see Dr. Suntaro. I saw him for maybe a year. This Doctor would come into the room and seat on his computer which is Approx. 10 feet away from me. The whole time he is talking to me he is typing on the computer. Any colder would be impossible. When he completed his report he who would walk up to me and barely would touch me. I was very ill with R/A and he recommended for me to have cortisone intravenous at another location. In the past I had cortisone intraveneous at UC LA for five days and all this was done in the hospital while I was admitted. So many things can go wrong with the patient with this process and it could kill us. When I arrived at the clinic to have this process done they told me that the Doctor had requested five days of intravenous cortisone. I said "No" that is very dangerous without a doctor present, I could do it for one day but, not five. My next appt. with the doctor was in a month. I decided that I did not like this doctor's treatment and wrote to the director of Rheumatolgy that it was unacceptable and dangerous for a doctor to prescribe five days of intraveneous cortisone. To my amazement this director wrote that I could never be seen by any doctor at USC. I just found this out and I am in disbelief. May all these bastards that cannot take criticism go to hell. Not all doctors are good doctors and this director what ever his name is should of followed up. This is not the way to take care of a patient. I saw Dr. Shinada one time. He ordered lab tests and told me to message him through the patient portal when I got the lab work done, which I did. I did not get a response from him, or USC for a follow up. I messaged again a few months later when symptoms increased, no response. This was my first time to a rhuematologist, I live in a rural area and drove 5 hours to see him. Some kind of response or instruction would have been appreciated.

With hands down this is one of the best doctors my husband has seen at USC. He has great people skills and takes time and explains everything. Compassion is the best word to describe him. What a great and wonderful doctor!
