I saw Dr Alvarez after another surgeon performed a debilitating surgery. Dr Alvarez corrected as much as he could and though I still have life altering issues, I have more mobility and less pain. He performed surgery on the opposite foot 4 months later and I am very pleased with his expertise and the outcome thus far.

Everyone in our family has seen Dr. Alvarez at one time or another for foot problems ranging from sports injuries to plantar fasciitis. He is incredibly knowledgeable, very thorough, very personable, and very patient. Chattanooga is fortunate to have an orthopedic specialist of Dr. Alvarez’s caliber in our medical community.

Excellent doctor and staff!! He strives to help his patients heal vs surgery. I can’t say enough about him and his knowledge!!

I am a physician who had a severe ankle injury involving repair of my fibula with plate and screws, and repair of multiple ligaments. I am extremely grateful for the caliber of his expertise. He does amazing surgery! He also repaired my neighbors heel bone which was shattered in pieces. To recover from injuries like these requires a surgeon with a gift. God bless Dr. Alvarez!

Dr. Alvarez is an amazing physician. I have had trouble with my ankle for years and Dr. Alvarez took care of the problem without surgery. He has a great rapport with patients and is concerned for their well being. I would recommend him to anyone with foot or ankle problems.

Tried to resolve issue without surgery but it was inevitable. Appreciate all the non operative options. Post op was so much better than expected. Dr Alvarez and his staff really cares about their patients. Jennifer called post op to check on me and answer any questions I might have. Erlanger is lucky to have Dr Alvarez on staff

After many years of agonizing pain in my left big toe, from arthritis, Dr. David Phillips referred me to Dr. Alvarez. He took X-rays and explained that I needed surgery. He performed the surgery and I haven’t had any pain, at all, since. I have read the above reviews and understand it is frustrating when the Doctor is late. He has to deal with emergencies and take sufficient time for other patients. I don’t know the man outside his office but I know he took time with me and made my toe where it doesn’t hurt. If anyone in my family has foot problems, they are going to Dr. Alvarez. Nuff said.

Horrible doctor do not waste your time. Very long wait to start off, and the doctor does not take time to look at your thoroughly because they prioritize money. Dr. Alvarez is supposedly the best foot doctor in Chattanooga but that is very incorrect. This doctor is way overrated. He did not help my feet in the slightest, he refrained from getting me an MRI when I had been in miserable pain every single day for 6 years, and instead he thought it was a good idea to send me to a rhumatologist with zero evidence to suggest arthritis... After all that I got a MRI at vanderbilt that ruled out arthritis with 99.9% certainty.

Do not see this doctor. I have had extreme foot pain the past 6 years of my life. I saw doctor Alvarez for a year until he was clueless of what my injury was. He was completely against getting an MRI even though I asked multiple times. Instead he decided to send me to a rheumatologist for an entire year with no evidence. After being at the rheumatologist for an entire year I finally got an MRI that completely ruled out any form of arthritis. I still have extreme foot pain, and Dr. Alvarez was unable to help in the slightest. Do not see this doctor. I have had extreme foot pain the past 6 years of my life. Worked on my father (ankle replacement), my daughter (Os trigonum removal), and my plantar fasciitis with success for all. Highly recommended! Love him and Jessica!

Dr. Alvarez is tops in his field. We are very lucky to have a surgeon of his stellar caliber in our area. I've had ankle surgery under his care and it was just as he predicted. He did a fantastic job in diagnosis, patient care, and monitoring PT as I eased to full recovery. My Brother also had surgery with him after my surgery was a success too. If you do your part (following directions, PT) he will do his. He's got a great team working with him so if you have ankle/foot issues, Dr. Richard Alvarez and his team are the ones to call for an appointment. Dr. Alvarez is tops in his field. I was referred here by Dr Caputo and so glad I was. I saw Jessica McClendon. After checking my leg she said I had no pulse in my foot so I was sent to ultrasound to verify and then referred to Dr LeSar for vascular surgery. They scheduled my first appointment really quick and they sent me for testing really quick and referred me to Dr LeSar really fast. Thank you for saving my my leg and for such excellent treatment from your whole staff.

Highly recommended! Has worked on my father, my daughter, and myself and has helped everyone of us! Great surgeon.

Dr Alvarez has now operated on myself and my two daughters. He is held in the highest esteem by our family. His knowledge, vast experience, and ability surpasses others. He is truly the ankle and foot specialist our city is so proud to have.

I could barely walk, I went to Dr. Alvarez he did surgery on my Achilles’ tendon and cut some bone spires off my foot. The surgery was excellent I now can walk without any pain on my left foot now. I would highly recommend Dr. Alvarez he is amazing. Also his nurse Jenny A was the best.

I had surgery on my left ankle the day before Christmas Eve and was running again by Easter. Dr Alvarez was amazing. He went as far as to show me what the surgery would entail with medical anatomy pictures. The nursing staff is wonderful as well! Id recommend him to anyone!

First to begin he was highly recommended. However, I didn't stay at his office to see him. My appointment was at 8:30am. I arrived at 8:15 am and they called me back pretty quickly. I got my x-rays by 8:40am and sat in the room until I stuck my head out at 9:40 to ask how long it was going to be. I was told that there were 2 other patients in front of me and he had 2 more in rooms (besides me). So I left. My appointment was at 8:30, so how in the world do you 5 patients in front of me???

If your time is of absolutely no importance to you, then this might be your guy. Over several office visits I routinely waited two hours PLUS for a scheduled appt. On day of outpatient surgery he was one and a half hours late! Even his office staff, when questioned, said that's always the way he is. That a physician has so little respect for his patients is unbelievable to me. As a doctor, I can't say much better. I would classify his skills as average, his bedside manner as flippant.

First appointment had to wait almost 2 hours on waiting room. At consultation room he was very polite, friendly and easy to talk too. For my second appointment which was schedule for 8:45am I arrived 8:30am, by 9:30am no signs of being called to room. I went to receptionist and she told me he was going to be an hour and a half late! I had to walk out of the office because i had another appointment to be at 11:00am. Very disrespectful to do this with the patients.

After multiple years of progressive ankle pain from a climbing accident, my local ortho ID'ed osteochondritis dissecans from an MRI and recommended PT and long periods of wearing an orthopedic walking boot. Knowing what I came to find out, this would have never been able to solve my issue. I got a 2nd opinion from Dr. Alvarez and he quickly identified torn ligaments as well and recommended surgery. Surgery went great and I can walk today, virtually pain free. I cannot thank him enough.
