About Rakesh D Patel
Reviews for Rakesh D Patel
Very professional very good bedside manner. Awesome I’m feeling great.
5 star perfection, profesional care!! Dr. Patel and his team members exceeded my excpectations!! Thank you for giving me back a quality life!!
I had an indirect spinal fusion operation. Everything went well. The U of M staff was polite and efficient in both pre operation and post operation. The operation resolved my issue with no complications.
Before my operation, pain prevented me from walking or standing for more than few minutes at a time. Within a few weeks after the operation, I was walking for 30 minutes with no problem. Dr. Patel and his team were very patient with answering my many questions, explaining what was going on with my spine, and what they would do to correct things during the operation.
Glad I found Dr Patel a few years back. About 7 years now and back still doing well. Have some screws a cage some disc replaced I have no complaints at all
Dr. Patel preformed two back surgerys on me in April and May. I'm strill healing, but am happy with results so far. A very Professional and likeable Dr. I would recommend him to anybody witrh back problems with complete confidence.
Dr. Rakesh D. Patel came in on Sunday 11/8/2020 as I just suffered an L1 Burst fracture. He was calm, professional and put me at total ease. He said he was going to make "good as new" and he was true to his word !! He is an amazing doctor. The BEST. Words cannot express how much I appreciate him (and the entire U of M staff). If you need anything more from me, I will be happy explain my Nov - July experience at U of M. Nothing but 5 star all the way. Greg D. Balan, Flat Rock Michigan 248-568-2801
I have had scoliosis since I was a kid, with Harrington rods put in at 12 years old. My spine continued to curve and cause pain, locking up, making it difficult to work. No other surgeon wanted to work on my back since I already had surgery. Dr Patel made a plan and did surgery extending my rods to my pelvis. I am 3 months post op and feel GREAT! I no longer have pain in my back and can move around easily. Would recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Patel and his staff gave me excellent care. Way beyond what I ever could have expected. I am so grateful I was referred to him by my pain doctor who said he was the best. Considering how well I am doing after a big spine surgery, I agree. Really cares about his patients.
4/28/21 - I am remiss that I didn't update this review to 5 stars months ago. Dr. Patel performed my wife's initial surgery on 3/10/20, the same day the first Covid-19 patient was identified in Michigan. To say we experienced a roller coaster ride with my wife's recovery and delayed follow up surgery, just as Michigan went into lock down, is an understatement. Dr. Patel proved himself to be a HIGHLY SKILLED, PERSONABLE AND COMPASSIONATE SURGEON. Since this was a revision surgery, the post surgical x-rays tell a rather profound story. The fasteners that remain from my wife's original back surgery look like Pickup Stix while the uniform precision of the fasteners in the section Dr. Patel added is amazing. Dr. Patel's skill and personality easily overshadowed the rough start. Thanks Doc!! 2/26/20 - The surgical date was finally scheduled at 63 days and only after we scheduled a follow up appointment with the doctor. Since then we have had a very productive meeting with Dr. Patel (2/24/20) and though the delay has seemed interminable, my wife is now comfortable with where this is going. As such, I'm raising the rating to 3 stars with a final rating commensurate to the surgical outcome. That said, I still give Dr. Patel's clerical support staff zero stars. Their lack of communication and customer service skills is breathtaking and, honestly, an embarrassment to the U of M Health System. 1/6/2020 - Now at 56 days. Happy New Year! I hope everyone at UofM Medical had an awesome holiday season! 52 days and counting without a surgery date since contacting surgical scheduling per my wife's doctor's instructions. In mid to late November and early December the excuse was that the surgeon was on vacation and had not submitted his surgery dates. In mid-December, that excuse evolved to the requirement of coordinating with an additional surgeon's schedule. By late December, the excuse evolved to coordinating with the schedule of a different additional surgeon, from a different department, the possibility of a two day surgery and, of course, holiday vacations. All of this, as I watch my wife's condition deteriorate, just to get into the surgical queue. This leads me to question if the delay is due to scheduling ineptitude or surgical incapability. There is zero doubt my wife's spine condition is extremely complex. That said, I would certainly hope the University of Michigan would inform us if this revision surgery is beyond their capabilities so that we could make alternative arrangements in some manner now that timely has been taken from us. 4/28/21 - I am remiss that I didn't update this review to 5 stars months ago. Love him and how he helped me he was the 3rd Dr I saw for this and I picked him
I had major pain in my lower back and going down my left leg prior to having surgery. I am 3 months out and feel great! Thanks Dr. Patel!
Dr. Patel rescued me from agony. In 2020 I could not function I was in so much pain. I could only crawl. He was realistic about what I was going through and what I could expect. I had a very extensive multilevel spinal fusion surgery. As a nurse I was impressed that I had extensive surgery and came through it with no neural deficits.
Dr. Patel did my spinal fusion with cage three months ago and I have been pain free from day 1. Before surgery, I was in extreme pain and barely able to walk or stand. Immediately after surgery, I was pain free. I can’t thank Dr. Patel and his team enough for giving me my life back. I would highly recommend Dr. Patel and his team.
This was a follow-up visit pursuant to spine surgery by Dr. Patel on December 22, 2021.
Our son had severe scoliosis from birth. We've found the staff, Dr. Patel and everyone involved with our son's surgery to be professional and caring. Dr. Patel is in our option is a dedicated, highly skilled Orthopaedic Surgeon. We are so satisfied with the whole experience and result.
The procedure I had done took bones out of my neck and put rods and screws in. Considering I was quite attached to those bones, the level of pain caused by their removal was quite extreme. I did NOT feel like my pain was managed at all. I could not sleep for the 1st 28 hours after surgery due to my pain level. Despite repeated calls from the very dedicated nurses taking care of me, the “doctors” (not sure if Dr Patel or residents/students) did not seem to have a remedy nor really care that I was in a great deal of pain and unable to sleep for over 24 hours after the procedure. Beyond the immediate pain management, the full results from the procedure are still unclear as I’m still recovering and receiving treatment.
Amazing Surgeon! My dad fell off a ladder and the surgeons in our area wouldn't touch him because his cervical injury was too complex. We took him to u of m, and Dr. Patel called me to go over his condition and the surgery he needed. He discussed the risks involved and could tell we were so anxious not being able to be there with him due to covid. After the surgery he called me himself to tell me what procedures he ended up needing to preform and that there were no complications! He saved my dad and we are forever grateful to have had such a skillful surgeon. My dad is doing great months later, our follow up appointments have been prompt and he answers all of our questions. I could never thank him and his staff enough! The staff that helped him with his halo vest were also amazing and took so much time going over everything with us. They were genuinely concerned with him being comfortable and pain free! Thank you to everyone!!
Dr Patel performed my L5 S1 spinal fusion surgery with cage. It has been 1 full year since the surgery and I feel fantastic. Absolutely no pain and no side effects. He changed my life.
Overpaid, outdated skills. Asked about disc replacement, he started reciting old study results from 2002. Spent weeks doing intake paperwork and researching the doctor, day off work, 3 hours of driving, pay to use their parking structure. More repeat paperwork in waiting room. After all my trouble, he spent less than 5 minutes with me and dismissed my questions about my symptoms and said he had to hurry. Received bill for $500. Great service!? Their billing and marketing system appear to be working perfectly though.
Excellent care for my back problem! All the pain going down my leg is gone after the operation! Thanks!
It has been 6 months since my surgery, and l am grateful to have Dr. Patel, as my doctor. Today I'm able to walk without pain.
Dr Pattel and his team are extraordinary. From scheduling to surgery to nursing my experience with U of M orthopedic surgery was beyond my expectations. I should add that I experienced almost immediate relief ftom pain, which heretofore had been disabling.
Extremely grateful for Dr. Patel!! He truly listed to me and answered every question I had, he cared about how I understood and perceived my care. But the most amazing thing was when I was admitted to ER, 2 months following my surgery NOT caused by what he had done for me, but he still sent an associate to check on me and that associate was by my side within 20 minutes from arriving. I do not know many doctors that care enough to make sure they are doing everything they can to help you, even in the short time after they have completed your care from surgery. I believe he genuinely cares!!!! Btw...I was in pain for over two years, woke up from surgery with No pain. It has now been 7 months since my surgery, and I still do not have any pain. Again, very grateful.
He was condescending, rude and acted like he was a god, which he is far from. He did three spine surgeries in four months, all for the same thing, and all failed miserably. Instead of repairing his first or second failure, he just kept going higher up my spine. Even his trusted nursing assistance told me to write a complaint to the hospital about him because according to them, they have to hear about all the complaints about him, but are scared to death of him. Never going back. Go to Tec Soo at
He didn't explain or seem to understand my MRI results. Very dismissive.
This is actually my 2nd review of Dr. Patel. I am now 6 months post-op ALIF & I'm 100% pain free! I have gotten back to exercise & my hobbies. I went scuba diving in Mexico a few weeks ago & had no problems! I'm back to my strengthening exercises & cardio workouts (running/elliptical). I'm keeping my core strong. I can't say enough about how Dr. Patel changed my life. I was in pain, taking meds, unable to sit, not sleeping well, even crying at work. I'm so happy now! PAIN FREE! Meredith :)
If you are looking for a doctor that can tell you that they can help you with your problem, this is the man to see! I had back problems for forty years every doctor I talked to gave me an 85-15%that I would be as bad or worse, this one said just the opposite, he said he could help me, 100 % cured back problem, six week out and still no pain , you can't ask for more ! Very good doctor !
Excellent surgeon. Gives honest assessment of your condition. Doesn't sugarcoat. Had extensive back surgery with great results.
Dr. Patel is amazing! My mother had a congenital defect in one of her lower vertebrae. She had both scoliosis and stenosis. At 70, mom’s back had become so twisted that it had begun to pinch the nerves off, leaving her unable to drive, and slowly losing the ability to walk. Dr. Patel is a very talented surgeon, who is able to explain what he does without all the jargon! Mom is walking straight, and pain free!! We can’t fully express our gratitude for this man, and his team. Highly recommend!
Broke my back in 2001 had fusion from T11 to L2 at that time. By 2017 I had to go on disability stensis in lumbar area I could not walk maybe 50 yards before pain and lose balance I had to sit down. I new damage in my lumbar area was severe. I had tried several types of treatment before risking surgery. Surgery was 14 Hours over 2 days Fusing T11 to the pelvis. I am now 9 weeks out the result is beyond expectation I run out of breath before my back gives up DR Pakel and UofM have come throw
I would highly recommend Dr Patel he did a great job on my surgery I had been in pain for over 9 years and he straighten my back up and now I’m walking a lot better.
I cannot say enough about my experience with Dr Patel! He truly made a decision that changed my whole lifestyle. My previous Dr told me that because my C1 fracture was not healing my only option was risky spinal surgery. I went and saw Dr Patel and he said I could live a normal life without surgery! The first day I saw him he sat down in the room and spent a lot of time going over all my options and what he felt. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease with my situation! He is the best!!!!
Great Surgeon. He Made A Plan And Carried It Out To The Letter.lt Worked Masterfully.God And Him Make A Good Team!!!
Suffered 6 years with back pain from stenosis, other doctors did pain management that left me still in pain so we found dr. Patel .. our first meeting with him we knew we were in the right hands and felt confident that Dr. Patel would be able to bring some relief. His staff was great ,and doctor Patel answered all our questions . happy to say after spinal fusion surgery I am 100%pain free , hiking 3-6 miles a day and loving life pain free. dr. Patel has given me my life back. Thank you Doctor
I had been experiencing pain down my left leg due to a compressed sciatic nerve. The surgery performed by Dr. Patel was a complete success. I am experiencing no pain whatsoever. I have recommended Dr. Patel to others and I will continue to do so.
Have not had my surgery yet, but our visits have been very informative and easy to understand. Great bedside manners and I feel like I’ll be in good hands during my upcoming surgery!
I came to Dr. Patel after a surgeon at MSU refused to help me. I had two previous back surgeries and was needing another fusion. After such a rotten experience at MSU (I live in Lansing), I was nervous how I would be treated at UofM. From scheduling, to finding my way around the hospital, the people I encountered were helpful and kind. I felt truly cared for by Dr. Patel and his staff. The commute from Lansing to Ann Arbor is absolutely worth it!
Dr Patel is a very kind and compassionate person. He did my two back surgeries in July. Compared to the X-rays from the start of this ordeal my spine is straight and looks wonderful. I would highly recommend him to anyone. I will miss seeing him.
Dr Patel is a very knowledgeable and interesting individual as well as physician. He listened to what I had to say, not only about my physical condition, but also my preferences in my own care. He explained any and all procedures thoroughly and answered any and all questions I had. He and his staff, were all very friendly and courteous. We drove a long distance, numerous times, to meet with Dr Patel. While it was tiring, it was so worth the journey. Thank you Dr Patel.
I was actually impressed by his straight forward and to the point. I’m hopefully to see what he says the 27th. I’m praying he’s the guy to fix my back. The last few years have been so frustrating. Not that I want a 3rd surgery, but something has to change. I’m much to young to feel this old.
Richard Flanders dr.patel seen my problem and offer me good advice to have the surgery
Preformed lower lumbar surgery on my back I'm a now 28 year old diesel technician and knew I needed to find the best of the best knowing I have atleast another 25 years of heavy duty work ahead of me I never one time reget or second guessed my choice in surgeon
I have to say, I love this Dr.Patel! He knows his practice. He doesn't always go into detail with explaining everything, but he is straight to the point. He is not going to waste any time. He is well respected by his team and facility. He saved my life! I will always be so greatful to him and his team! Bravo!
He may not have the best bedside manner, but he is the BEST surgeon I've dealt with in 15 years and the only neurosurgeon I've deal with in that time. I would recommend him to anyone, he gave me my options and told me what would happen if I had to have another surgery.
Very nice and knowledgeable Dr. however; his staff is less than courteous. My wife saw him a month ago and she still doesn't know when she will be able to have surgery. We left multiple messages with his nurse AND his scheduling receptionist and it took a week only to hear, we're still not scheduling for two months out. So that means it will have been at least 3 months from the time she saw him, to the time she actually has surgery. I would not choose this route again.
I don't usually write bad reviews especially of physicians since i am in the profession myself, and i understand some of there time and diagnosis limitations. But I have to say Dr. patel had one of the worst bedside manners i have ever encountered. He was not rude, but just seemed indifferent, as if he was doing me some kind of favor by making time to see me for my very painful hip and leg problem. He did not even diagnose my problem but yet wanted me to get a cortisone epidural spine injection, which he said would be diagnostic and therapeutic. Needless to say I did not get a needle in spine "just to see". I went to another physician for a 2nd opinion and am very happy with her evaluation and treatment plan. Either way i was very disappointed by what a world renowned medical facility like U of M had to offer its patients. I don't usually write bad reviews especially of physicians since i am in the profession myself, and i understand some of there time and diagnosis limitations. First of all, not sure why the Back and Pain Center in Northville scheduled me with an ortho surgeon to discuss my MRI when I could have told them I didn't need surgery. I went there for pain treatment. I took half a day off work to go to main hospital only to have Mr Patel literally walk in the room for no more than 30 seconds while spewing out that my images didn't show anything that required surgery and that he believes I have pain but he can't help me,...then he said good luck and left.
