We love Dr. Maertens he's an amazing doctor my daughter who is autistic feel super comfortable around him he's the best doctor we had in ages we been with him since my daughter was 5 and she's 13 now i really really adore him! Around a decade ago, this man saved my vision. I was a young teen, scared, and going blind quickly. I was admitted to Women’s and Children's and I was blessed to have Dr. Maertens as my doctor. Without his knowledge, and time spent on my case, I would surely have been blind. It may be late to write this, but I owe him for many achievements I have been able to accomplish and events I have been able to experience. I’d give a ZERO, but that’s not an option. My daughter whom is 15 was seen at Women's and Children of AL while in the hospital. Dr. Maerten’s came in for a consult and then followed up throughout the hospital stay. He diagnosed her with osteoarthritis in her spine and I knew this could not be correct. He was discharging her and wanted her to get PT and 800mg Motrin. Her symptoms were an extreme headache and she could not raise her arms or move her neck. I pushed to get a second opinion and we were transferred by ambulance to Children’s Hospital of Birmingham whom diagnosed her with the same MRI’s I had brought from Women’s and Children’s what were previously read and the results were said to be clear. The Correct Diagnosis was Pseudotumor Cerebri, my daughter was losing her peripheral vision, her optic nerve and disc was swollen. A spinal puncture was done and 56 was her opening pressure and it should have been around 20. Eventually my daughter had to have a brain stent placed. And this goes on and on... If I had not pushed for a correct diagnosis my daughter could have lost her vision and still be in pain with no help at all. Also this office refused to put in an MRI referral. My insurance carrier called the office on 3-way and asked for them to put in the referral and my insurance would approve it on the spot. The nurse refused to do it. The nurse at the office said there was priority and they were short on staff due to Covid. Two weeks later his office called and wanted to schedule the MRI. (She had already had one and had been hospitalized for two weeks in Birmingham) Long story, but I wanted to share so you can form your own opinion and get the best care for your child. Love Maertens

Dr. Maertens is wonderful. He was very attentive while my son was in the hospital. Even tho the diagnosis is not what we wanted to hear we feel confident in his treatment and are happy that he will be my son’s neurologist who will be monitoring him for years to come. Thank you again to him and his staff.

We love Dr. maertens! He is very kind and gentle with our son! Thank GOD for his knowledge of the issues with our son! Appt was at 2:20, we were in the back at 2:15!

Couldn't keep up with my daughter's diagnosis...too lazy to read through her chart before he came in on multiple visits. He felt the need to fuss at us about things that he didn't even inform us of...a nurse was in the room with us this visit and she just hung her head. I personally think he's let his patient load get bigger than what he can Handle. We quit using him and went to UAB! Couldn't keep up with my daughter's diagnosis...too lazy to read through her chart before he came in on multiple visits. Dr Maertens was on duty the night my 7 month old son, Jordan, was injured with 2 skull fractures. Dr Maertens is highly skilled, competent and very compassionate. I credit him with helping to save my son's life. We are forever grateful for having had Dr Maertens working with us.

Dr. Maertens is a first-class physician. He's been seeing my son for nine years. His bedside manner is wonderful. He ALWAYS takes whatever time is necessary to address All our concerns. As my son is now a High School Senior, the thought of soon losing Dr Maertens as his doctor truly upsets him. THAT says it ALL!!! Dr Maertens receives TEN STARS in our book and our highest recommendation! Dr. Maertens is a first-class physician. He's been seeing my son for nine years. His bedside manner is wonderful. We love Dr. Paul; he is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to - he has a great personality. He went above and beyond to help my grandson and was the only one that was able to diagnose his rare disorder. We would be lost without him!! I would recommend him to everyone in need!!

Over 2 hour wait with a 4 and 5 year old - I don't usually have a problem taking both children to doctor appointments but don't usually have to wait so long. Dr. Maertens called my 5 year old a liar and told him he wasn't trustworthy because he didn't answer his silly questions the correct way. Thinks he's faking his problem because he doesn't have an answer for what's wrong, though he's had brain surgery and has had this problem on and off for a while. Very upset and disappointed.

2 hour wait with a 4 month is what reduced the amount of stars. I know that he has a tough specialty and things can get backed up, but 2 hours is just excessive...especially with a 4 month old.
