My family recently advocated for my mother to get a 2nd opinion from another doctor before she gets an additional corticosteroid shot in her arm for pain management to ensure this was the best course of action. Oh, but not Dr. Hernandez. She believes she is the utmost expert in the field. When my mother communicated this request nonchalantly, the doctor grew immediately furious and told her “Go ahead and get a second opinion and then stay with that other doctor!” She repeated this angrily four times to my humble and meek mother. My mother was dumbfounded. A front office staff member asked my mother, “What happened? The doctor says she doesn’t want you as a patient anymore.” When my mother explained she had simply asked for a referral for a second opinion, the front office staff member stated, “Don’t worry, the doctor just gets upset like that sometimes. By the time you come in for your next appointment, she will have forgotten all about it.” Just Google her, terrible bedside manner.

My mother has been a faithful patient of Dr. Milagros for 22 years. She has trusted this doctor wholeheartedly throughout this time in handling her rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. By the time you come in for your next appointment, she will have forgotten all about it.” How sad that the doctor’s staff is aware of her temporary lapses of judgment and thinks it okay to advise my mom to continue seeing this unstable professional, as if my mother could ever trust her again. The American Medical Associations Code of Ethics clearly states, “Physicians can best contribute to a mutually respectful alliance with patients by serving as their patients’ advocates and by respecting patients’ rights. These include the right: (g) To obtain a second opinion.” It is obvious Dr. Hernandez does not abide by this Code of Ethics that she agreed to when she became a medical professional. Over the last few years, it has been clear Dr. Hernandez is not the utmost professional expert in her field. The following examples include, but are not limited to: 1) My mother’s vitamin D levels have been low for many years but Dr. Hernandez kept refilling the same generic vitamin D pills, without advising her that there are other options or supplements, such as those with third party lab testing, which my mother would have gladly paid for. This changed recently, when I started ordering Pure Encapsulation vitamin D pills for her and now her vitamin D levels are normal, according to bloodwork (no medical degree here, just education-based research). Vitamin D deficiency is known to cause Osteopenia, which my mother now has – the correlation here is upsetting and uncanny. 2) I recently went to a doctor’s appointment for the first time with my mother at this office and sat there for hours while Dr. Hernandez moved boxes, rearranged furniture, shuffled paperwork, took care of numerous non-patient activities while my mother sat in the waiting area, and then waited again in the patient room. She was not the only one. It was disheartening to see the number of older individuals waiting to be seen by this doctor for the hours we were there. These are patients who are arthritic and are in pain. Why book so many patients if you can’t see them in a timely manner? Why take care of other non-medical situations during the time you have booked these patients? 3) Dr. Hernandez’s bedside manner has always been terrible. While my mother is discussing her ailments and pain in her 1:1 consults with the doctor, she is constantly interrupted by staff entering the room who need signatures or the doctor to leave the room for various situations. How can you feel confident in being heard about your medical needs when you never have the doctor’s full attention? Dr. Hernandez, you think that by refusing future care to my sweet mother that you exercised your power trip over her and demeaned her, but you showed your true character instead. Dr. Hernandez is a top physician on her field. She is not there to be your friend but to take care of your health and she does a da good job She explained every medication that she prescribed, if you are ignorant not to understand or ask questions that’s on you. As for me she diagnosed me and treats with respect and that’s all I need from my physician.

I would love to actually rate my experience with Dr. Hernandez, but unfortunately I never made it out of the waiting room before I had to leave to get back to work. It wasn't until I had been waiting for an hour that the office staff informed me that they take walk-in patients before scheduled patients. I left extremely upset given that I'm immunocompromised and was stuck in a non-socially distanced waiting room with office staff that was not even wearing their masks properly during a pandemic! Save yourself some stress and wasted time and find a different doctor.
