If you break an ankle and are told you require surgery, I recommend a consult with Dr. Swords first before making your decision. I came to him after having had 2 surgeries by surgeons from another group to repair a traumatic break to my ankle (broke in 4 places). Both original surgeries to stabilize and repair the breaks went great and were done well, but the surgical wounds were not healing properly. Post op follow ups at that office are done entirely by the PA, a process that hadn’t been explained to me. After expressing my concerns to him and being repeatedly told to “keep an eye on it”, it finally looked bad enough to him and he referred me to a wound clinic. I had to go every week for treatment of an infection. While it helped, the wounds still weren’t healing completely and it seemed like they might not ever do so. I was frustrated, worried and dejected. I saw my primary care and suspecting something more serious was happening, referred me to Dr. Swords. I am so THANKFUL they did. He saw the gravity of my situation and through simple examination and talking about my medical history with me, he deduced I was reacting to the metal implants. He recommended removal of all the plates and screws. I agreed and 2 weeks later he performed the necessary surgery! What a difference!!!! Not just in my healing, but in the whole methodology of how he and his staff operate. I had follow ups with him at my first and last appointments, and in between I saw his PA, Wendy. She is friendly, attentive and professional. Dr. Swords is in the office and available the days you see her if you or she have any questions, and she is present with him in the operating room for your surgery. This was so different from my experience at the other office and 100% better. If you fracture an ankle, save yourself time, healing and frustration and request Dr. Swords for surgical consult in the beginning. If I could go back in time and do that, I would. I realize that the the metal reaction might have occurred regardless, but after my experience with Dr. Swords, I am confident my concerns would have been acknowledged and addressed a lot sooner.

Dr. Michael Swords and his team are exceptional. He listens, answers any and all questions, and provides a thoughtful approach. He had several students in the room during our consult and I am grateful to know that future doctors are learning from him. The office staff was kind, and quick. The new office space is bright, open, and easy to navigate.

Dr.Swords is a credit to his profession. He is knowledgeable, compassionate, and an extremely gifted surgeon. After suffering with pain after an ankle fracture for five years, I saw Dr. Swords hoping for some relief. He right away explained what the problem was, and how he could fix it. I agreed to surgery thinking any improvement would be helpful. I’m happy to say six weeks after surgery, and I am 100% pain free! I truly have my life back, hiking, biking and leisure walking all without any pain. A shout out to his whole staff who are personable, kind and caring. Dr.Swords is a credit to his profession. Staff very efficiently processed me through my appointment. Dr Sword, as always, very socialable and professional.

They did have a posting about being understaffed, however, I believe to see the MD for a 9:15 appt. at approximately 10:40 was a little too much.

I felt heard, supported, & encouraged while Dr Swords thoroughly informed me of my options regarding ankle arthroplasty & foot issues.

Dr Swords did an excellent job on my foot surgery! After another doctor from a different practice told me i had gout and i walked on it for 3 months the 5th metatarsal fracture took 4 screws and a plate to put back together! I highly recommend Dr Swords and his PA Wendy Downey for any foot problems!

This does not reflect on the quality of Dr. Swords surgery skill rather on the difficulty of getting the office to submit an FMLA form which Dr. Swords said he would be happy to sign. We've had to ask for an extension from our employer because the office never responds to phone calls. We've submitted a copy by mail and in person and paid the $20 fee. Communicating with the office on this has been extremely frustrating. He took time to listen.

My husband had a bad ankle break that required surgery. Dr. Swords said he'd be glad to sign an FMLA form. However dealing with his office to get this done had been a nightmare. After many unanswered calls and delivering the forms by mail and again in person and paying their fee still nothing.

Never disappointed to be seen by Dr. Swords. He takes the time to explain what needs to be done...what can wait until later, etc. The whole staff works together to make the experience go smoothly. I've had surgeries performed by Dr. Swords 9+ years ago and place my trust in him for my future foot surgery on the opposite foot!

Dr. Swords is an amazing surgeon. And being an amazing surgeon, he tends to lack the patience with his patients and appears abrupt at times. I still would go to him again. The staff was awesome, wait time was reasonable, scheduling surgery was not prime. I was always treated respectfully by Dr. Swords and the staff. I would certainly recommend him and this office!

Absolutely love Dr.Swords… wait is worth it

still waiting to hear in regard to my STAT CT Scan that was done 2 weeks ago, not sure if I will be having surgery or not. I have left 2 messages thus far and still have not received a follow-up call. Very disappointing.

I would recommend Dr, Swords to anyone having foot and ankle issues, I had ankle fusion in April and it is coming along nicely. Dr Swords takes the time to answer all questions you may have and makes sure you know where you are at in the recovery stage.

Informative and professional.

Dr. Swords gave me great information on the recovery process for my foot. He informed me that, luckily, surgery wasn’t necessary and that a simple rehabilitative exercise was the best course of action. I think Dr Swords is a good surgeon but the service provided by office staff is terrible. It took over a month to get his surgical scheduler to call me back about scheduling surgery. Actually she never did- I had to go to a higher level to get it scheduled. No post op instructions were provided ie have crutches or a scooter available? The written information I was given did not provide this information either. People that I’ve talk to that have had foot surgery other places tell me that all this information was provided thoroughly in advance? When I asked if I was going to be able to reach someone if I had postop questions or problems I was told I could press option three when I called. I wonder what people do that don’t know this. I left about 5 messages Re scheduling surgery, got one call back after which the person was supposed to check with the doctor and get back to me and she never did. This is unacceptable service in my opinion. I think Dr Swords is a good surgeon but the service provided by office staff is terrible. Dr. swords wars excellent! I was dreading this appointment because I thought I was going to have to have surgery. Not the case at all. Dr.Swords was very knowledgeable and helpful. I saw him for surgery a few years ago and he was personable enough, but on the brisk side--as if his meter was running. I went because he's widely considered the best in the Lansing area for foot surgery. Has the reputation turned his head? Whatever the case, I think he (or his office) is discriminatory in not taking Humana/Medicare insurance for surgery. The snotty receptionist on the phone was very insistent that NOBODY in the office did.

Dr. Swords explained everything well, making it easy to understand my problem and the recommend procedure. He answered all of my questions. I feel very confident having him as my doctor and surgeon.

Dr. Swords was thourough and explained my son's injury and what needed to be done to fix it. He took the time and answered all of our questions. We left there feeling confident that we had made the right decision in selecting a surgeon for our son.

Very good at what he does fixed my ankle well. Great at listening to my concerns and signing for therapy. Wait time sucks never waited less than an hour in his office for an appointment usually closer to two hours. Double booked someone checked in with me at the same appointment time today to see him. Worst experience ever!!!

Very nice experience, Dr. was professional and described what was happening in my foot. I have excerscies to do per his device. Really nice to havae a definitive answer to the problem I was experiencing.
