Michael Rickels

I have been seeing Mike Rickels, MD since 2000 for my 57 years of teenage-onset Type 1 Diabetes. Because I know what I'm doing in having managed it well for so long, he has always treated me with the utmost respect (remarkable among some physicians). In that T1D is a multi-system condition (endocrinology), I have found him good at seeing me as a whole person rather than "as a medical condition". One huge benefit of this is that he is NEVER remonstrative or frustrated or rigid, because he somehow is aware of how hard it is to self-manage such a sensitively dangerous genetic – and so far, incurable – disease. This results in patients who feel good about themselves, about their disease state, and his flexibility in supporting our approach to our own way of living with diabetes.

Yes getting in and out of the whole Penn Rodebaugh Diabetes Center takes some time with construction and traffic Dr. Rickles makes it well worth the trip. He explained the intricacies of diabetes management in a direct and helpful manner. The Penn Medicine staff was friendly and did well to accommodate in every capacity. This doctor is well versed in islet cell research and communicates it in manner that patients can relate to. I will be returning in the future.
