Dr. Kunkel is an excellent Oral Surgeon. He is extremely compassionate and explained the procedure so I could understand what to expect. I felt that was very calming and allowed me to relax while I was in his care. He is highly skilled and gentle. I would recommend Dr. Kunkel to anyone needing treatment by an Oral Surgeon. My primary dentist found a brown area on my upper palate and referred me to Dr. Kunkel. I was very hesitant, but Dr. Kunkel put me in ease. At his inspection he believed it was benign but recommended we go ahead and do a biopsy. He was very informative and discussed each step. At time of surgery - he was fantastic and very concerned that I was ok with everything. It went well; I had little if any discomfort and more importantly - non-malignant! THANK YOU, DR. Dr. Michael Kunkel and his entire team are FANTASTIC! My mother had an emergency that required urgent attention, and Dr. Kunkel stayed late to see her and then was able to do surgery the very next day. He was so patient in explaining all of her options and answering questions with such thoughtful care and expert knowledge. Truly high caliber and meticulous in his skill. Not only that, Dr. Kunkel called my mother personally later the same day post surgery to check on her well-being. So impressed! Cheryl was absolutely wonderful and super efficient in making everything happen seamlessly with insurance and communication between the oral surgeon and orthopedic surgeon to get my mother in as soon as possible. Dr Kunkel and staff were consistently courteous and efficient. Every appointment was on time with no delays. I am a physician and have a good background of surgical procedures and I feel Dr Kunkel was very knowledgeable and gifted with excellent surgical technique. Virtually no pain with any of my visits! I would happily recommend this physician and his office to anyone needing an oral surgeon.

Preparation for an implant uses a CT scan which is very helpful to understand what the procedure will entail. Dr Kunkel also uses it to do detailed planning for the actual drilling and setting of the implant. I definitely recommend using the robot as part of your implant procedure. Dr Kunkel and staff work as a cohesive team to do precise drilling that fits the implant perfectly so it integrates well with the bone and also allows the the use of the largest implant that will fit so it will be as strong as possible. The robot sales person was present for my procedure and was very impressed by how professionally Dr Kunkel used the technology to deliver a great result.

Everyone acts highly professionally and gives their best to make the patient feel comfortable. Took my sweet time to get my wisdom teeth out... and honestly, waiting helped me find the RIGHT surgeon for the job! The entire office staff was wonderful, personable, and accommodating even with Covid precautions in place. Dr. Kunkel was fantastic with his work and expertise, even though I was 25 at the time and at a high risk of dry socket because I had waited so long (which he helped me avoid! A huge relief). He went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable (I was lucky to not have impacted wisdom teeth, but he still allowed me to undergo deeper anesthesia as I was not even remotely interested in being awake for the procedure), and he ensured that I continued to do well after the procedure through follow-up calls and visits. I'm glad I waited and found Dr. Kunkel and his staff, because they made the entire procedure a breeze! I was extremely nervous before going in to have my wisdom teeth removed. After speaking with the staff and Dr. Kunkel, however, I felt much more relieved in their knowledgeability regarding the procedure, what, I should prepare for, and for their professionalism. Dr. Kunkel and his entire staff were wonderful during the surgery and with the follow up visit. I had two teeth removed with bone grafts inserted. The entire process was painless and I would highly recommend his office.

I honestly believe Dr. Kunkel may have saved my mom's life.  I was terrified when my 77 yr old mother recently started experiencing excruciating mouth pain. We're new to town and didn't have a clue which oral surgeon was most highly regarded. The first one (she chose) took x-rays and couldn't find anything wrong. The next 3 I chose after hours of research, poring through all the review sites I could find. I believe I found the top 3, the first of whom promptly diagnosed her as having severe Osteomyelitis (bone infection), immediately referred her to an Infectious Disease Specialist, and somewhat frantically insisted she schedule surgery within the week. Total face time with doc was maybe 5 mins. Grateful to have a diagnosis but frankly he scared the bejesus out of us! The next day we saw Dr. Kunkel for a second opinion. He confirmed the diagnosis, however, his disposition and overall approach discussing the prognosis was entirely different. I don't know how to really explain it but you can just tell that this man is utterly brilliant, like scary smart! It's almost like you can see him doing differentials in his head while simultaneously fully present and engaged, taking all the time we needed to discuss and fully address the many questions/concerns we had. Witnessing such humble aptitude, we were quite certain he's who we wanted but still kept our 3rd appointment the next day with the #1 highest rated oral surgeon on Healthgrades (& frankly the doc we were initially most excited about). And wow, what a shock that was - Dr. D'Add**** wasn't even in the same league as Dr. Kunkel!!  I'll forgo the details not wanting to speak poorly of him as perhaps it was just an off day or maybe illness/fatigue/stress/etc?...but I will say in all earnestness that we both left that appointment feeling all the more confident that Dr. Kunkel was by far our best bet! Now here's where it really starts to get interesting. Dr. Kunkel's schedule was COMPLETELY booked for the following 2+ weeks. Moreover, it wasn't his week in rotation at St Francis Hospital so he didn't even have access to a surgical suite (surgery of this magnitude couldn't be done at his office). Upon learning this, we were scared to death as mom's situation was critical and time was of the essence.  Well, wouldn't you know it: Dr. Kunkel, knowing the gravity of her situation and how terrified we were, and wanting to ensure she get the very best care possible, not only managed to somehow reserve surgical suite access, but also so selflessly and generously offered to preform the operation on his only day off!!  I mean, what an amazingly altruistic gesture that truly meant the world to us.  Over the following few days leading up to surgery he was in contact with my mom, often late in the evening around 9pm after a full day of work (which, OMG how awesome) discussing the procedure and CLEARLY checking out the latest research on the myriad of complementary/alternative treatments I'd berated him with! In all honesty, his willingness to spend time doing the additional research I'm confident he did so to be best prepared proved that he was/is a cut above. Fast forward 4 weeks and I'm happy to report that my mom is recovering beautifully. The 5 hr. surgery was a huge success! This particular procedure isn't cut and dry, meaning, they cannot just completely remove all the necrotic bone. The surgeon must decide which bone and how much to remove and the hope is they decide wisely so as to avoid a second surgery. I'm grateful from the bottom of my heart that we managed to find such a skilled and dedicated doctor. Dr. Kunkel is a true gem who WITHOUT DOUBT you want to preform whatever surgery you might need! Surgery went as planned and on time- which we really appreciated for a young child who had to fast before surgery. Assistants were wonderful, provided plenty of time for recovery without rushing. I have a GREAT fear of dentists—and because of this fear I didn’t seek treatment when things happened which led to A LOT of compounding problems. I was so fortunate to find Dr Schope and she was able to treat and address the majority of my problems; however, there are issues that she was unable to resolve. She assured me that I would be well taken care of and she confidently referred me to Dr Kunkel. Again my fear spiked because I had to see another dentist and the problems were more involved. I had a difficult wisdom tooth with an abscess forming below it. I needed to have anesthesia but I have had problems in the past with epinephrine, an anesthetic component. Dr. Kunkel was able to administer it by using a smaller amounts carefully spaced out during the surgery so that the epinephrine did not become a problem to me. The surgery was excellent and he has been most helpful in answering all my follow-up questions. The staff has been kind and most helpful also. I was referred by my dentist to Dr. Kunkel after an attempt to extract my infected implant was deemed too risky. Special tools and skills are needed to get the job done. Dr. Kunkel is highly skilled and competent. He foresaw potential problems and explained in detail what to expect at each stage. My procedure went well and my recover was quick and almost pain-free. His assistant Nikki was very patient in answering my many questions before the procedure and in explaining how to care for the extraction site afterwards. Their front office insurance lady took the time to talk to my insurance company and wrote lengthy notes stating why my procedure should be covered. Last but not least, Dr. Kunkel even took the time to find me expert surgeons in the new state I am moving to very soon. I recommend Dr. Kunkel and his team wholeheartedly and confidently.

Kunkel Review An abscess caused me to have a tooth extraction that landed me in the hands of Dr. Kunkel. I was clueless about the implant process. But luckily, my first encounter was with the experienced and competent health professional team at Pikes Peak Oral Surgery. During my first visit, Dr. Kunkel took me through the upcoming procedures step-by-step and addressed any questions or concerns. On the first day of the procedure I was calm, more knowledgeable and confident that I was in great hands. Throughout the process, Dr. Kunkel had a gentle touch and so did Erin who assisted him on my final visit. As a team, they made sure that I was comfortable at every step of the process. Dr. Kunkel is not only an excellent oral surgeon with a compassionate attitude, but he is an extremely dedicated and knowledgeable healthcare provider. His ability to make complicated procedures understandable and easy to digest. I had a major procedure done that required extreme skill (osteomyelitis) in removing necrotic bone without damaging nerve or possible jaw impairment. Dr. Kunkel and his staff are amazing! I am in the process of my second tooth extraction and implant with them. Dr. Kunkel is very professional, caring and gifted. He called me the night after my procedures to see if I was okay and if I had any questions. I really do not like having my teeth worked on but now after my experience with Dr. Kunkel and his staff I have no problem going in to let them fix my teeth. This is actually my second review I am leaving for Dr. Kunkel and his staff! Everyone is so kind, patient, understanding and helpful from the receptionist, to assistants, to Dr. Kunkel himself! He did an amazing job with removing my daughter's wisdom teeth and again with recently removing my son's! Yes, I would recommend Dr Kunkel strongly because I had a biopsy done on my tongue and he prepared me for the whole procedure and it went very smoothly and successfully. I was very happy with the whole procedure.

Dr. Kunkel and his staff helped to reset my jaw after I broke it they were super amazing and friendly about it and truly care about patients recovery considering the type of injury did i mention that they also did it with minimal discomfort? I went in to see Dr. Kunkel for removing a chipped molar. He and his staff answered all my questions on the procedure and the cost. Dr. Kunkel removed the chipped molar and also did a bone graft for a future implant. The procedure went well and I was in no pain. What was amazing to me is that Dr. Kunkel actually called that evening to make sure that I was ok and his staff followed up the next day. That is almost unheard of these days. I would highly recommend Dr. Kunkel. He and his staff are the BEST.

From the initial visit to the procedure and the follow up appointments the were unbelievably professional and friendly. My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Kunkel and I was already recommending him/the office 2 days later. I had not good experience with Dr. Kunkel’s office. I have to extract my horizontal wisdom tooth and so my first dentist recommended to extract it from Oral surgeon. After reading good review, I decided to visit Dr. Kunkel’s office. In first visit, He checked my previous reports and did initial checkup. Given me estimates of extraction of one tooth and two tooth. In the checkup, He told me that deep sedation/anesthesia is necessary for extraction because tooth is horizontal and attached to Jaw. Office staff has included anesthesia charges in my estimate and shown that insurance will cover it. In fact they already verified my insurance. They have given me estimate of 945$, I need to pay 133 $ , rest from insurance. I am happy with this quote and proceed with treatment. After extracting wisdom tooth, for three weeks I am not able to eat solid food. . Though, I am happy with Dr. Kunkel’s treatment. He also called me evening and enquired about me. Still, I am OK until Insurance has denied the claim for anesthesia , mentioning that it’s not required for treatment and asked me to provide more information from doctor. I called the Doctor office and asked them to provide more information. Office staff resubmitted paperwork again to Insurance, Only having procedure done. But Again insurance has denied claim , mentioning that “Dr has not mentioned , Why anesthesia is required for treatment”. Later on , Dr. Office send me hefty bill as Christmas gift. I visited Dr. Office , explained the things and asked the clarifications. They also told me that anesthesia was necessary for your treatment , as it’s horizontal tooth extraction and insurance should cover it. If insurance is not covering , then I need to pay remaining amount due. So I decided to call Insurance agent in presence of office staff. Insurance agent clearly told that “Dr. has to provide clarification , why anesthesia is necessary so they will process claim” Now, I am sure that deep sedation/anesthesia charges are forced on me. Finally , I need to pay remaining dues and Dr. office submitted letter to Insurance company about necessity of anesthesia, assured me they cooperate . Im not a "review" leaving type of person however I strongly believe in giving recognition when its deserved and Dr. Kunkel and his staff deserve this recognition. 3 years ago I started the journey to get the dreaded implant surgery that my Orthodontist had talked about for 2 years as a final step after getting my braces taken off. 3 years ago I went in and met Dr. Kunkel and staff. From the first greet to the laid out plan on cost, procedure etc. I was blown away by how caring, pleasant and easy this was. However I got the pre surgery jitters and found excuses that outweighed the benefits of the surgery such as: finances, work and honestly it wasn't a priority. Fast forward 3 years to this past fall during a cleaning my dentist Dr. Moore gently reminded me it's time to revisit the implant surgery as waiting leads to bone loss. I procrastinated for a few weeks and finally called Dr. Kunkel to revisit. The 2nd time around I was now worried about being judged and not taken serious since I had blown this off before. Once again I was impressed with how caring, patient, non judgmental and easy this was! I scheduled my surgery 6 weeks out. This is it! 5 years in the making I've finally got it scheduled. Fast forward to surgery day eve, IM TERRIFIED! I google every way to talk myself out of the surgery, including trying to find reviews on the surgery of cons that outweighed the benefits. As I spent hours watching videos and trying to justify my reason for being scared my husband tells me to put that same energy into being brave and moving forward and to "stop trying to get out of it" So 12/6 I arrive for my surgery, so scared that my blood pressure was high. I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth and postponed removing them as long as I possibly could. Dr. Kunkel told me they would put me under anesthesia and it would take less than an hour to extract all of them. On the day of my procedure, my anxiety was flaring like crazy and I was super nervous about the surgery. The staff were all very comforting, and did not make me feel ashamed for being afraid. I was having a mild panic attack and they handled it with ease. My momma has an aggressive cancer and needed a few teeth pulled before her next chemo treatment. She was nervous and scared due to her health issues and facing the unknown with her teeth. I had Dr. Kunkel for both a molar extraction and a post placement for an implant. I elected for sedation and it was performed superbly as well as the work. I had no pain with either procedure, minimal bleeding for the extraction and none for the post and I experienced no swelling on either procedure. His office staff is superb and the facility is excellent. I highly recommend him for Dental Surgery procedures.

While dreading getting my wisdom teeth extracted, I actually had no pain by following Dr. Kunkel's excellent after care instructions! He and his staff showed such personal care start to finish!

He and his staff were extremely helpful and courteous. I felt very comfortable and welcome dispite my anxiety for my first surgery. Even with the high likelihood of nerve damage with my wisdom teeth removal I still came out with no problems! I could not recommend them more

I can't say enough good about the professionalism in Dr. Kunkel's office. I have an extremely hard time going to the dentist, but I can honestly say that Dr. Kunkel has made the experience so much better. Dr. Kunkel and his team were amazing! I put off getting my wisdom teeth extracted for years, but recently, they became so bothersome that I just couldn't take it anymore. Because of the size and position of my teeth, we decided general anesthesia would be the most comfortable option. I was INCREDIBLY nervous to be "knocked out", but Dr. Kunkle totally put me at ease- he really listened and validated my concerns. What I really appreciate about his practice, is the fact that he tailors treatment to the patient rather then using a "one size fits all" approach. I had my wisdom teeth pulled two weeks ago. Dr. Kunkel and his staff were amazing! Very professional. As someone who had never had surgery before, I was incredibly nervous about the entire procedure. We visited for my daughter's impacted canines. He was AMAZING! The amount of care she received and he and his staff showed was phenominal. In the event another surgery is needed, we will certainly be returning. He is very thorough with explantions. I highly recommend.

Due to the pain and swelling, my right side jawline and neck regions being affected showing extreme swelling! My skin felt as if it were being ripped apart. Once it was determined that it was a tooth abscess, an appointment was made by the Urgent Care Center and your office. The competency of you and your team were nothing short of amazing! Dr. Kunkel and his staff are above & beyond. Very friendly, kind, and accommodating. Dr Kunkel is one of the best oral surgeons out there. He contacted me via cell phone, late at night, on a weekend to call in meds for my pain until he could see me in his office that Monday. The procedure went smoothly and my post-op pain was WAY less than I expected. Healing has been a breeze for a pretty invasive oral surgery. You will be in good hands with Dr. Kunkel and his staff.

Dr. Kunkel and his staff are just wonderful. I most certainly recommend Dr. Kunkel to others. I received excellent care before, during and after my procedure. I had two extractions and subsequent bone grafts to prepare me for having implants. All went well and the after surgery recovery passed without a hitch, as the doctor and his assistants told me how to care for myself post-surgery. And I feel particularly lucky that his office is here in Colorado Springs.

The best experience...everyone in the office was friendly. I had a tooth extracted and Dr. Kunkel explained each step he was taking which I appreciated. It did not take long and I have not experienced any pain or discomfort. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone...though I hope I will not have to go back.

Dr. Kunkel and his staff are top notch to say the least. I have had 2 surgeries by Dr. Kunkel and couldn't have been in better hands. The most recent was to have three implants put in to replace lower molars. I couldnt say if I was in any pain that evening due to taking a pain pill before the numbness went away, however there was little to no pain the next day with no medication. I litterally had no pain. I will be back when the need for Oral Surgery arises in the future.

I had two things done by Dr. Kunkel, and extraction followed a few weeks later by the placement of an implant to replace the lost tooth. I was very impressed by his caring attitude, the skill he exhibited, and most of all his willingness to talk to me about what was being done and why. Not once did he seem to busy to answer my questions. The rest of his staff is great as well, never failing to greet with a smile and my name. I have already recommended friends to Dr. Kunkel's office.

The VA referred me and I was surprised by how awesome this guy is and the way they treated me was the like no place I have ever been....Just an all around amazing experience.

I had a molar go really bad with a very aggressive infection. With an emergency referral from my dentist, I arrived at Dr. Kunkel's practice relatively late in the day in tremendous pain. I was put at ease right away by his friendly, compassionate staff. Dr. Kunkel's examination, explanation of options and efficient surgical team resolved my problem in a timely manner and got me on the way to healing and recovery. Cant be leave how smart he is If your down just being around you will feel better (always cheerful) Had to go in on an emergence basses twice Both times they stayed way after hours to take care of me They always call me 1 or 2 or 3 times after each visit to check on me You never have to worry you can call them 24 /7 and they are there for you I cant say enough how wonderful they are

Dr. Kunkel and his staff were outstanding. They made me feel so comfortable, I felt as if I were visiting with old friends. They got me in on short notice and even though the wait was lengthy (due to another procedure) they kept me appraised and even called me earlier in the day to let me know my scheduled time would be delayed a bit.
