Dr Downey did a fantastic job on my hand it feels so much better it doesn't hurt anymore after the surgery

Dr Downing performed surgery on my right hand to correct Dupuytrens Contracture that I learned from him is a genetic disorder. The hour and a half surgery was done this past December of ‘22. The Anesthesiologist was also most kind to sit and to chat with me and to kindly gave me his assurance of providing the best possible. I absolutely experienced NO pain whatsoever after this surgery, and did not bother to take any of the pain pills that Dr Downing prescribed for me. All I had was an occasional mild ache on my hand. He kindly set me up with Physical Therapy that I completed a few days ago. All in all it was a Positive experience! Very grateful to have been connected with this Dr with a Positive spirit for this surgery.

I am so fortunate to have the best bone doctor. HIs knowledge, precision and enthusiasm for my healing means the world to me.

This was a TRULY AWESOME experience! From the front office staff to everyone who was in the chain of service, I was SO impressed! The easy and approachable demeanor from everyone was top notch. From Priscilla, Joey the Rad Tech, and Loren from the Phillipines - what a great team. Dr. Downing was knowledgeable, thorough, efficient and so personable. A stellar performance by all!

I was faced with the real possibility of losing the end of a thumb after a dog attack. I was told in the waiting room that most injuries like mine result in amputation. From the moment I met him in the ER, my fears of being permanently maimed were melted away. His confidence and desire to make my hand whole again gave me the reassurance I was in the right hands. He fully discussed the approach he was going to take and why. He came to me in the O.R. before I was put under to once again explain what he was going to do and said he would also clean and stitch up numerous small wounds on both my hands. I now have complete use of my thumb again with full feeling and no pain. His office staff are all very friendly and hospitable. While he has a very busy office, during my follow up appointments, I always felt he was focused on me and my needs when we were face-to-face and did not rush through my appointment. This tends to cause a bit of a wait beyond the scheduled appointment time, but knowing he wasn't rushing any of his patients and would afford me the same respect makes the wait completely worth it. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Downing. He did an amazing job not only saving my nearly completely severed and broken thumb, once completely healed, no one will even know of the injury. While I hope never to need to see him again, if I ever required orthopedic surgery, he would be my first call. I would direct any friend in need of his expertise without hesitation.

Absolutely decimated my clavicle on May 1st, 2022 due to a biking accident. I went to Sharp Grossmont the same day and received a sling. I’m beyond happy they recommended I visit Dr. Downing. I got an appointment where Dr. Downing not only was honest about surgery, but demonstrated the procedure to me. He showed me risks that the surgery may entail, but the honesty he displayed about is what really made me appreciate him and his staff. In no way did he put any pressure on me to get surgery and let me know the pros and cons to either getting surgery or not. His excitement when he was showing me the different nerves, blood vessels, procedures and plates that would be used in my surgery let me know he was passionate about his work, he did not have to say a single word, his actions spoke for him and let me realize I had made a great choice. Having never been put under before, I was a bit nervous about anesthesia, but Dr. Downing and his team’s confidence really put me at ease. He reassured me that he’d take care of me right before I went into the operating room, which is huge when it comes to a positive mindset before going under. Surgery went well and I returned for a post-op checkup. Dr. Downing and his incredibly friendly staff addressed all of my concerns and were very patient with me as well. If I happen to break my other clavicle and need surgery, I will most certainly get it done by Dr. Downing, as long as I don’t have to make him really work to get the bone back in place again. The last thing I really need to mention was the amount of time my surgery took. Doctor told me these types of surgeries can be short as 45 minutes, but mine took two hours due to the damage caused as well as some other minor complications with my clavicle. Dr. Downing did not complain about it, in fact he told me it doesn’t matter how long it takes, as long as I got the care I needed. This means the world to me as it can be easy to be seen as a number instead of a person when it comes to healthcare (at least in my past experience), but it was not the case here. Human hands are one of the most beautiful, intricate things in the world. They allow us to learn about the world, create, build, communicate, comfort, pray, hold another hand. My experience has given me such an appreciation for hands, these beautiful blessings that built our society ???????? Thank you Dr. Downing for your compassion, care and expertise! Your optimism toward my recovery has been so important in maintaining my hope and facilitating my healing. I had been experiencing the symptoms of a compressed right ulnar nerve for almost a year before seeing Dr. Downing. Some of muscles in my hand had visibly atrophied, I had pain in my elbow, and tingling and numbness on my 4th and 5th digit, and parts of my hand, and forearm. I was no longer able to use chopsticks, typing was becoming increasingly difficult, and it was starting to affect my ability to do so many things I loved. I couldn't even lay on my right arm without feeling discomfort. After months of trying home remedies like anti-inflammatories and nerve gliding exercises, nothing was helping. I then became scared when my hand started to lock up. My sweet boyfriend comforted me and promised that he would find me the best care and he did! I am so grateful that I was placed in the care of Dr. Downing! My case turned out to be severe and gave me realistic expectations for my recovery while still maintaining optimism. Wow! I hit a speed bump on my electric bike when I wasn't looking. I went over the handlebars and hit the ground 15 feet away. My right elbow was smashed into 7 pieces. Dr Downing put them back together. That was an amazing bit of surgery. I have 4 screws in the elbow and 3 along my right forearm. I was back lifting weights 3 months later. At 6 months, there is no pain and I have full movement of my arm. I am as strong as I was before the accident. No chronic pain either. Wow! Dr. Downing has been an amazing, personable, and caring medical specialist to work with. He is extremely skilled and current with regard to practice, knowledge, and medical innovation. Because of a severe wrist injury, I was filled with fear and trepidation about my chances for recovery. His support and expertise got me to recovery beyond my expectations. Dr Downing is state of the art surgeon. I had carpel tunnel in both wrists. He did one surgery time on both wrists. One recovery and no physical therapy. Three months later both wrists are healed. Thanks so much for knowing a way to fix both at the same time.

Few people truly appreciate the finest and most complex of intricacies comprising the human hand and motion--that is, other than the poor patient and her orthopaedic surgeon. Sometimes a patient lucks out in the ER and gets Dr. Downing, recognized by his colleagues as a "superb surgeon." After one surgery and one office visit, I heartily concur. I am equally impressed with this surgeon's "bedside manner"--Dr. Downing's ability to effectively communicate with me the process of surgery and beyond, "the long road," as he tells me. Recently underwent a “digit widget” procedure at Dr. Downing’s hand. The whole process was outpatient based and went very smoothly. Post surgery I felt surprisingly good in recovery and was pleased with the outcome over all. I went and saw Dr. Downing a few months ago for my right ring finger that I popped from rock climbing. It was the best experience I've had at any doctors office. From the front to the back of the house was professional and courteous. A quick injection to squash the swelling and I was back to climbing in two weeks. I cut a tendon on the back of my hand with an angle grinder, and I’m a musician. Not good! Dr. Downing had me in surgery the following week, and now four months after, I’m cleared for all activities, no problems other than the stiffness and swelling you would expect from a major surgery. I am back to playing music at what I consider an acceptable professional level LOL. He also diagnosed a nagging performance-related injury I’ve been dealing with; musicians or athletes, if you’re having repetitive stress issues that can’t be easily diagnosed, here’s your guy, I have two (non hand/wrist-specialist) doctor friends who couldn’t pinpoint the issue. I was referred to Dr. Downing by another specialist because I learned he loved doing shoulder replacements!!! He did a great job, and never make me feel rushed even when running behind. He’s young and very up to date with new advances!! Highly recommend.

I had a great experience with Dr. Downing. I was having trouble with Carpal Tunnel pain, and I needed CP release surgery on both hands. I saw Dr. Downing via Telehealth for the first meeting, and from that meeting and some previous diagnostic work we were able to schedule the surgery. The procedure offering was excellent! He offered bilateral (both wrists at once) endoscopic surgery. Recovery time is 2-3 weeks, with no restrictions on movement just 2-3 days after surgery. This offering is a game changer from previous options that were often one wrist at a time and 5-6 weeks of recovery. I had the surgery 1 week ago and it really smoothly. Dr Downing communicated all the information clearly and the staff was very helpful. 1 week later and I feel great. The incisions are healing nicely and my CP syndromes are gone. Dr. Downing did a great job. Set up a telehealth appointment with him to see for yourself. I had a great experience with Dr. Downing. Dr. Downing is pretty remarkable. I came to him with a severely injured wrist and elbow that had sustained multiple complex compound fractures and had failing surgical hardware that was causing me great pain. To say my problems were more than difficult is an understatement. Most doctors took one look at my x-rays and referred me to another. Finally someone got it right! Dr. Downing took the time to read my medical history and discuss it with me at length. He really tried to understand my arduous journey and then meet me right where I was to help me through it. As I continue my rehab and follow ups, I am confident that I have one of the absolute best in my corner and helping me to get back to my best. Words are not enough to properly and fully express the gratitude my family has to Dr. Downing. He gave life back to my grandmother by restoring her ability to be herself again. My grandmother is a powerful, independent, giving person who built a family and gave her life to that family, and aged with much difficulty dealing with Parkinson Disease. Even worse, she injured her shoulder to the point of barely being able to use it, and the crippling effect worsened her standard of living. Dr. Downing met her where she was and gave her courage to keep going. He cared for her, showed her exactly what was best for her to be able to get as closely back to where she was, and followed through in taking care of her. Dr. Downing is an excellent surgeon! I had carpal tunnel in both wrists. I am a lawyer and am always typing - so this was a very debilitating injury for me in my career, as well as in my daily life. There were times I couldn't hold a fork to eat! I had trouble playing video games or using any fine motor skills whatsoever. Dr. Downing performed both carpal tunnel surgeries on me and I am happy to report full functionality has been restored to both of my hands! I can type, game, and hold objects with my hands again without worrying I'll drop them! In addition to being a wonderful surgeon, Dr. Downing is extremely down to earth and likable - you can tell he cares about your progress and he takes the time to get to know you. He was able to successfully correct the previous work of another hand surgeon on my left index finger, that had actually worsened my condition. Dr. Downing's skill set is wide-ranging. Dr. Downing is remarkably skilled and detailed oriented. I came to him for a second opinion based upon a recommendation from a trusted medical professional. The advice was simple - If you have an upper extremity issue, you need to see Dr. Downing. Dr. Downing provided sound judgment in recommending the repair of my biceps tendon and even called my wife to assure her of the procedure's safety. On the day of my surgery, I waited for a few hours for Dr. Downing, and the staff let me know that this can happen because he takes time with all of his procedures - what a wonderful thing to hear pre-surgery! After suffering of a broken arm for 4 months from a fall in August 2019 that occurred at my work -  which forced me to utilize doctors within the Worker Compensation network,  I ended up being misdiagnosed by an incompetent doctor on my condition and what my treatment plan should be.  I eventually was referred to Dr. Kristopher Downing. He immediately knew that my initial treatment of my broken arm was not proper and I was in desperate need of surgery. It took another 6 months of suffering working through the bureaucracy of Workers Compensation to get approval to switch to Dr. Downing.  Finally, I had my surgery a month ago. The surgery was intense and it took 5.5 hours where 15 screws were inserted, a bone graph performed and implantation of a long metal rod. I am forever grateful for my Hero Dr. Downing’s expertise,  his caring demeaner and indeed his God given surgical skills that has helped me recover without much pain. I must give a shout out to the others who assisted him.

I got so lucky when i was referred to Dr. Downing. Let me start off by saying that after surgery when you go to physical therapy and every single one tells you how lucky you were because he is the best hand surgeon in town, well by that time i had already figured it out but they reaffirmed that. I really like the staff at the La Jolla location, they are either smiley and willing to help or busy doing their job. I personally, working in Customer Service at a call center, like people who are busy working and not just chatting and not paying any attention to you. There is usually at least one sweet lady that helps in front. Even the customers look and are happy and nice. I see Dr. Brereton in Dr Downing’s office, he is wonderful to work with and always has ideas to alleviate the pain or stress to your injury. Mine is a bad sprain/tendonitis in my left thumb and wrist. I recently I had spinal surgery while dealing with my sprain. Which while using my walker I can’t wear the brace that Dr. Brereton wanted me to wear, reason being I needed to have grip on the walker to not fall.I came in to the office with a walker for mobility and Dr. Brereton had a fabulous idea. Doctors Downing and Brereton treated me for a lunate scaphoid disassociation by break. My pre-surgical appointments were handled very professionally, each physician explaining to me what needed to be done, in a language I understood. My surgery was followed up with great aftercare. During all of my post surgical appointment with physical therapist, occupational therapist, and even the insurance provider, all told me how good these doctors were. The last 2 and a half years of my life have been plagued by restless sleep, constant shoulder discomfort and dislocations. Now I am happy to say that I am able to sleep, surf and carry on with my day to day activity without pain following me through the day, all thanks to Dr. Kristopher Downing. On my first visit with Dr. Downing he spent probably almost 2 hours with me! He was very thorough in ordering the right tests for a proper diagnosis. I’ve had pain in both of my arms for 10+ years and seen numerous other doctors, chiropractors, spine specialists, pain management specialists, etc. Those doctors only looked at one little part of the problem and not whole issue. After a work related injury involving my shoulder and wrist, I went to see Dr. Downing who came highly recommended by other Law Enforcement peers. I could not be more fortunate finding a more competent caring Surgeon. He made the challenges of dealing with The Department of Labor easy for me, while getting all treatments I needed to be approved in a timely manner. Dr. Downing performed shoulder surgery and my shoulder now feels very strong and painless. A few months later he performed a wrist surgery to repair a tendon, which resulted in me, now being pain free and back to work in my Federal Law Enforcement job. I've had two hand surgeries done by Dr. Downing. both surgeries were pretty and almost enjoyable. He cleaned up a mess left by another surgeon 20 some years ago and the hand is doing so much better. I really appreciate that Dr. Downing takes the time to make a connection and goes into, just enough, detail so that I can understand what's going to happen. I won't hesitate to have Dr. Downing take care of any further upper extremity issues I might have.

I met Doctor Downing in August of 2018 after my I broke a bone in my left hand after a major cycling accident. He got me into his office right away and assessed that I didn’t need surgery. He fitted me into a fracture brace to assist on the healing. I was grateful he explained in detail My injury and answered all of my questions. He wasn’t in a rush and took time to make sure I understood everything.

One of the worst waiting experiences. I did arrive for my appointment 4 minutes late since I initially was in the wrong building. I checked in with my paperwork already filled out then sat down to wait. I was called up for a pre pay for my visit but the credit card machine was down so they wanted cash which I had, but then they didn't have the $5 change to give me back so we agreed to bill or contact me the next day for phone payment. I sat back down to wait. My appointment was at 11:15am. I arrived at 11:19am. Since I entered the wrong building after coming out of the parking garage. I waited for an hour before approaching the front desk and asking if the wait is always this long and she replied no, usually 1/2 hour, and should only be a few more minutes. Well if that was the case I would have been fine since I had felt I might have to wait up to 45 minutes anyway, but after waiting 1 1/2 hours I approached the desk and asked for my paperwork with my personal information back. Only then was I told he was running late due to a surgery. If I was informed of this information when I arrived I would have felt differently. Instead I sat there in a crowded waiting room for an hour and a 1/2 with no explanation until I decided to leave. I cannot speak on behalf of his qualifications, bedside manner or anything else because I did not have the chance to see him. Nor would I go back after this incident. I feel my time is valuable as well and not only did I lose the hour it took me to drive there and back. I lost an hour and a 1/2 waiting and I had to pay $4 for the parking enclosure. I don't understand why the staff wasn't forthcoming about this information upon my arrival. One of the worst waiting experiences. Dr Downing performed hand surgery in my left hand. (9/2011). I fell at home and I needed an emergency surgery. I received excellent service and I can move my hand , normal movement, I recovered with no problems, never have pain again after surgery.
