About Joseph Mccadams
Reviews for Joseph Mccadams
He was very personable & straight forward
He was very direct and honest which I appreciated.
I had a kidney removed for cancer, & developed a hernia at the incision site several years later. Dr. McCadams was called in to repair it. He chose to attempt repair of a complicated hernia on my right side laparoscopically and left behind an infection that he then refused to treat. He refused to see me in his office, having the staff tell me he would not see me till the prearranged post op appointment. I went to the ER, the ER doc called him and he told him to send me home, I was fine. 2 days & another refused request for an appointment sent me back to the ER with intense pain, a reddened & swollen right side (incision was at the naval) & a fever, the ER doc admitted me and called Dr McCadams afterwards. He still refused to treat his patient, mocking me as he stood in the doorway. I left AMA after several days, having my parents drive me to St Louis University hospital where I had emergency surgery, nearly died and went home after a month with the incision still half open as they couldn't close it after surgery due to the massive infection. My pancreas was damaged irreparably, 15 years later, I still have to take pancreatic enzymes to digest food and medicine. I have now reported him to the Missouri Board of Healing Arts, I was unable to do so before as the resulting PTSD was vicious and I was unable to communicate.
Review updated: Dr McCadams was called in to repair a complicated hernia on my right side, caused when an old surgical incision opened. He chose to do the procedure laparoscopically rather than use accepted surgical techniques which called for opening the original incision for the repair. Thus, there was no incision at the site of the hernia on my side. Infection set in within 2 days post surgery, my side began to turn red and swell and the pain became unbearable. He refused to see me in the office prior to the pre arranged post surgical appointment though I called twice to report the infection. Even after an ER Dr admitted me to St Francis, Dr McCadams still refused to treat the infection he'd left raging in my abdomen. I was given no IV fluids and insufficient antibiotics, and he mocked my pain from the doorway of my room, telling me I could go home any time I chose. An unknown hospital employee put her job on the line late one night to try to save my life by telling me I had to leave the hospital and get better medical care or I would soon die. She has my everlasting gratitude, she saved my life. I somehow managed to sign myself out AMA and had to ask my ill elderly parents pick me up and take me to SLU in St Louis where they started preparing me for emergency surgery immediately. I had to wait till the next day for surgery because I was too dehydrated and the Dr wanted an ICU bed available for me, so I spent the first 24 hours with 4 IV machines going full blast with fluids and antibiotics, I begged for water and of course could only have infrequent ice chips. I was at SLU almost a month, and returned home with the incision on my side still half open as they couldn't close it with the massive infection. My surgeon told me before I left that he had not expected me to live and if this was the kind of surgical care that was available in Cape, I should consider going somewhere else the next time. I then spent 5 years with undiagnosed chronic pancreatitis caused by the infection damaging my pancreas, I can't even begin to tell you how horrible an experience that was. The worst pain I have ever known. I find it impossible to believe that Dr McCadams did not know that I had a post op infection when the other medical professionals could clearly see it, which then begs the question "why"? Why did he refuse to treat his patient when death was the likely outcome? I didn't have family who could stand up for me so no one would have questioned his explanation for my death if I hadn't sought treatment elsewhere. It also begs the question of "Were there others?" Edit #2 It has taken me 15 years to recover enough from the resulting PTSD to be able to write it down on a formal complaint to the Missouri Board of Healing Arts in Jefferson City and they have now opened an official investigation. I prayed that I would live long enough to be able to call attention to what happened to me and He answered my prayers. Dr. McCadams is a man of few words, but told me everything I needed to know. He operated on me for a partial mastectomy and was very successful. I was not in pain, even the next day. I would use him again.
My family has had multiple experiences with Dr. McCadams, and they have all been positive. He went above and beyond in his work for my family. The first thing you will notice is his quiet confidence and calm demeanor. He is very attentive to his patients, caring, and compassionate. I truly appreciated his knowledge and thoughtful attitude. Dr. McCadams left an infection after repairing an incisional hernia on my side endoscopically, and then refused to treat the infection, claiming I was lying and just wanted pain pills. He refused to see me in his office prior to the originally scheduled post up date, and finally, after almost a week, an ER Dr admitted me, angering Dr. McCadams, who told me not to expect any drugs from him. I left the hospital AMA several days later, on the advice of an anonymous nurse, and was taken immediately to SLU in St Louis. I was dangerously dehydrated and had emergency surgery to remove the infected mesh. I was in the hospital a month and wasn't expected to survive at first. The infection damaged my pancreas, causing chronic pancreatitis which was not diagnosed for 5 years, I am now 100% disabled with massive muscle damage from repeated surgeries to repair what he did. Avoid this Dr if you are poor or disabled
