About Dr. Jordan D Metzl
Reviews for Dr. Jordan D Metzl
The wait time was over an hour past the time of my appointment. After hearing 20 seconds of my injury history, I was cut off, directed to buy his book on treating myself and attend his class at equinox gym and come back in 6 six weeks. All in all he was out of the room in about 7 to 8 min. In that time he performed 2 strength tests that took all of 25 seconds. If you check elsewhere on the web, this is his MO and he has many dissatisfied 'former' patients. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> …10 years later. Turns out his diagnosis was correct and this is me trying to, ever so slightly, right a wrong. Had I done the exercise prescribed I could have saved myself a lot of frustration.

Dr. Metzl excels both for his professional knowledge and for his humanity. A precious combination for a doctor!
Dr. Metzl was kind enough to assist me in getting certain readings I needed for a condition I had. Thanks to the readings, I was able to treat them further. Though he assisted me back in 2009, I still well remember his excellent bedside manner and pleasant demeanor. Very happy I went to him.
I’ve gone to Dr. Metzl for several injuries. He is knowledgeable, and interested in keeping me moving, and that is my goal as I age. I wouldn’t go to anyone else. Now, with COVID, you go right into the exam room. He comes in and focuses only on you.
Based on the 28 0NE STAR REVIEWS there is no way I would ever go see Dr. Metzl! I am AMAZED that the Hospital For Special Surgery has him on their staff! Shame on you HSS!!!!!

I've been seeing Dr. Metzl for 25 years now and always have a great experience. I've avoided a few surgeries thanks to Jordan and this last time only wish I saw him 6 months earlier as he was able to fix my injury with a short procedure and rehab. I know I can always trust Dr. Metzl to look out for my best interest.
Dr Metzl is one of the best doctors I've had in the US. I saw him first over 10 years ago when going through a bad case of plantar fasciitis and again recently for the same issue. I knew it was the same diagnosis from my symptoms but wanted to see him anyway as I'm relocating and trust him more than anyone else I've worked with. Dr. Metzl has helped me overcome two, run-related issues during the last couple of years. First, he cured a chronic calf issue by discovering an unrelated muscle weakness and prescribing a regiment of home strength exercises. Despite my initial skepticism, after a few weeks, the issue disappeared despite increased running distances.. Most recently, he diagnosed and treated a planter/heel issue that I have struggled with for almost a year. A month later, I am pain free. I would highly recommend. Dr. Metzl is the best! He saved me from an already scheduled, unnecessary knee surgery, gave me back my confidence and had me back to weightlifting in no time - I’m forever grateful! Unlike other doctors, Dr. Metzl’s focus is getting you back to the sports you love, not subjecting you to unneccessary treatments and costs.
Dr. Metzl’s strength training program helped my daughter overcome 2 years of sports related ankle issues in the matter of 6 weeks. She was able to do it at home saving us the time and $ of going to weeks of physical therapy. He is upbeat and very motivating as well. Very grateful to him!
I took my son to him for a pitching injury. After a two hour wait for an x ray, we finally got to see him. Lasted maybe five minutes. He prediagnosed, barely looked at his arm, and left. This was a long time ago but I can see from the reviews, not much has changed. He is entirely about self promotion.
He ordered an Xray when I visited him for a sprained ankle. The Xray showed a chipped bone. He spent very little time with me (maybe 5 minutes) and did not respond to my request for an MRI. He told me to rest my ankle (no running), A few weeks after my first appt., I continued to have ankle pain so I booked a 2nd appt. He told me I could run/exercise again after our 2nd visit. Two months later, I had a 3rd appt with him because I still had significant ankle pain. He ordered PT but no MRI. I finally switched to a new doctor who ordered an MRI that showed a torn ligament. Exercising/running exacerbated the injury and re-tore it each time I ran. For months now, I have had significant ankle pain and am no longer running. He spent very little time with me during all 3 visits. I would NOT recommend him.
I came to Dr. Metzl for back, hip, groin, and ankle pain possibly related to a hip labral tear. Dr. Metzl told me I needed to do full body strengthening exercises, and emailed me his New York Times article and subscribed me to his mailing list. Dr. Metzl was not thorough in his physical examination and said my pain was "just muscular pain" and I "just need to strengthen." I came to Dr. Metzl because of his reputation and paid $225 for an appointment that was literally less than 5 minutes and was not helpful because any exercise further aggravated the pain so taking Dr. Metzl's high intensity high impact classes didn't seem like the correct solution. Dr. Metzl was an amazing doctor in a dire situation. I couldn't be happier with my experience or recommend him more.
Dr. Metzl took the time to explain my shoulder injury in easy to understand terms. He listened to my concerns and personal goals. I had morning appointments and did not have to wait long to be seen.
I found Dr. Metzl to be patient, thorough, compassionate and able to explain the details of the medical condition and possible treatments and the outcomes. Dr. Metzl was not driven by surgical solutions but by solutions that work for me.
Dr. Metzl did a fantastic job treating a painful foot injury that had significantly restricted my mobility. After explaining different options, Dr. Metzl gave me the right treatment to get me back on my feet!
I am a competitive squash and tennis player, I tore my elbow ligament a few years ago and was unable to shake hand or lift a glass for about a year. A friend recommended Dr Jordan Metzl, after the first visit he recommended a plasma rich platlate (PRP) injection directly into the tear. It worked like magic, After 3 weeks I was back to playing almost every day and completely pain free. I highly recommend him, besides I find him to be very personable. I had rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder in 2008. In 2016 when I had similar symptoms I was sure I needed surgery again. However, Dr. Metzl diagnosed my partial rotator cuff tear and performed a simple procedure - PRP. My shoulder is almost 100 percent improved and I didn't need surgery! He is excellent . Dr. Metzl is amazing - I went in with bad knee pain that was preventing me from doing what I wanted - including exercise. I thought I needed a knee replacement. Instead, he prescribed a program of strengthening, foamrolling and injections that have literally changed my life. Dr. Metzl did a great job treating the arthritis in my knee from wear and tear with Euflexxa injections and PRP so that I'm back to full activity in the gym and elsewhere without pain! Couldn't be happier with the treatment and attention I received from him and his team.
Dr. Metzl saved my son from a surgery on his knee, which was recommended by 2 others orthopedists. Full recovery and full return to gymnastics training without restrictions in 2 months. Our couch, Gennadiy Shub, respects only Dr. Metzl opinion and I agree with him. Dr. Metzl is a professional I trust 100%.
If you have an injury, need an orthopedist and seek a smart, efficient and effective healing I most highly recommend Dr. Metzl at HSS. Dr. Metzl treated our child over 20 years ago when she was growing into becoming a professional ballerina. I recalled his outstanding gift of wisdom coupled with the unusual ability to teach and inspire his patients to understand and integrate how best to heal and use an injury's lessons to strengthen conditioning and overall health. Fast forward to today, I live abroad as a yoga practitioner, yoga teacher and yoga therapist. When confounded by a confusing recovery of a seemingly simple fracture of my ankle I sought out Dr. Metzl's second opinion. He was thorough in his listening, information gathering, and recommendations for a treatment plan. His staff of Gerald and Monique, who helped to answer my questions and concerns long distance, offered further smart, compassionate support. Recalling Metzl and his team's guidance empowered and encouraged me in each step forward. With Dr. Metzl and his team's care I am finally on the right road to recovery. As my pain begins to wane, my foot's strength and functionality build daily. I am most grateful. I found Dr. Metzl to be quite helpful with my Achilles tendinitis. His strength training program really did help my ankle — my entire body, really — and without surgery or PT. It was transformative. I can understand some of the negative reviews, because his practice is busy and his approach is, well, efficient. However, I do think he’s a skilled diagnostician, for which he has a deservedly strong reputation, and his treatment program worked for me. I’m now a stronger athlete and operating without pain. True story: I saw this guy like 6 years ago when I was just a young adult (about 20) for a hurt back. Waited a long time. Finally saw Dr. Metzl for about 5 minutes or so. During that 5 minutes, he came across as fake (kept calling me "brother") and ordered a CT scan for my back. He said he knew of a great CT place that he was associated with. As an immature spoiled kid, I went right away without following up with my parents about price. It was $3,000 for a mediocre CT place. Quality aside, that's way too much for a CT scan. They're often $1000ish. Anyways, my mom was pissed. Rightfully pissed. Pissed at me and pissed at him. Yelled at me and left Dr. Metzl a bad review. I never asked her to write the review and I was honestly embarrassed that she had. Whatever, free country. A week or so later, I got a call early in the morning from Dr. Metzl's office. I forget why, but I had called the office a few days earlier to get some information. Anways, I'm stunned to hear that it was actually Dr. Metzl on the phone. My dad is a physician and routine house calls like this are rarely done by the head doctor. I was really impressed for a second. ... I quickly realize that Dr. Metzl had a different agenda... THIS DUDE CALLED ME TO YELL AT ME AND ORDER ME TO TAKE DOWN THE REVIEW THAT MY MOM LEFT!!!! Like what?!?! Crazy egomaniac yelling at some inexperienced kid (I was). I was shocked. He never answered my question either. Who in the hell has such a big ego that they check their reviews religiously? Like legit this dude called me just a few days after my mom had posted it. Somehow, he must have called yelp or whatever to have it taken down. I don't know how he did it. But, well, here's another bad review to help restore order and sanity to the universe. This guy's insincere. He's not a great doctor. He's a self-obsessed jerk whose calls young kids and throws a fit. This is NYC, there's a million doctors. I had a serious running injury 5 years ago which was not rehabbed properly, and have had chronic injuries ever since. I have seen a number of sports doctors and physical therapists regarding hip alignment and muscle imbalances relating to this injury, but have not been able to fully resolve the issue. I was optimistic that Dr. Metzl would be able to help shed some light on what has been going on. However, we talked for about 2 minutes about my current complaint, he did not ask me at all about my past injuries even though I had mentioned to him that my current injury was within the context of chronic injury (and my injuries were not written on an intake form for him to know about), and he performed a cursory 20 second physical exam. He did not ask me at all about my current activity level, how many miles a week I can run currently and what my running goals are, he did not ask me about any strength training I do, etc. etc. Instead he jumped straight to telling me I should watch a video about foam rolling and roll every day (which I already do and was a college athlete so I know how to foam roll), and that I should buy his $30 DVD and do the workout from it 2x a week. From what I found on the internet, the workout consists of plyometric super-sets. I am a strong person, because I work very hard to do exercises with good form, but my main issue is maladaptive compensation during complex movements, which is what plyometrics is. I feel Dr. Metzl did not try to understand my current physical abilities and limitations, and he did not help me understand my longstanding mechanical problems. He also suggested I get some sort of muscle shot (?) for pain if the plyometrics did not work (I'm looking for long-term resolution of my injuries, not temporary relief). I think plyometrics is a perfectly fine treatment plan for patients who do not currently have an effective strength training plan, HOWEVER I think it is unethical for a doctor to push their products on their patients as the treatment plan. He gets a star for reminding me of the name of an orthotic that I've been looking for. I've been an avid runner nearly my whole life. Last year while in the throes of training for a fall half marathon, I was diagnosed with a stage 3 tibial stress fracture. Dr. Metzl was my 3rd doctor during what was a very slow and somewhat painful recovery. The first Dr. didn't put me in a boot. The second Dr. suggested I "push through the pain" I was feeling after a follow-up MRI came up clean. Dr. Metzl's approach was entirely different. I'll admit, it was tough to hear that maybe my mechanics were off -- after all, I've been pounding pavement regularly for 20 years. Dr. Metzl prescribed a super-slow start back to running along with strength training. I took his advice and ran 1-2 miles every other day for 5 weeks and did so completely pain-free. We spoke about stride and though I detest running with my phone, he encouraged me to use an app that makes you mindful of your gait and SPMs. I'm still getting used to the orthotics he's a big believer in, but at least I'm running. Even though Dr. Metzl doesn't take my insurance, my only regret during this 9 month "shinjury" is that I went to see him sooner -- I probably would have saved money in the long run. I’m not sure why it took me so long to leave a review- I should have done this years ago. I’ve seen Dr. Metzl several times over the years to treat various running injuries and I’ve always left his care healed and more informed. At times in my life I’ve alternated between a recreational runner and ultra distance runner. Dr. Metzl is able to provide a level of care for both ends of the spectrum, whether its been nagging soft tissue stuff to wretched cases of plantar fasciitis. Dr. Jordan Metzl is my hero. Let me explain why. It was a year and a half ago as I was walking to the subway that something popped in my knee. After a bit of panicking I had a good friend recommend Dr. Metzl. All I can say is - my savior. Dr. M. did some minor testing, and along with an X-ray and then an MRI, it was a slight meniscus tear and some arthritis. 3 Ortho Visc shots later combined with physical therapy and I'm feeling better then I did before. Next up - rotator cuff tear in my right shoulder. Once again, Dr. Metzl to the rescue. Cortisone didn't work so Dr. Metzl administered PRP to the rescue. Got my mobility back and now having PT to strengthen the arm. Surgery is not always the answer and luckily I found a doctor who believes in alternative means of healing. I went to him a little over four years ago when I lived in NYC. After my diagnosis of severe arthritis in both knees he recommended a treatment which consisted of painful injections in my knees over the next three weeks which did alleviate the pain temporarily. After nine months, I returned for the next round as he had recommemded as well. At that time, I told him I was moving to Canada and asked if he could recommend a doctor there and he said he could not. Subsequently, I consulted a shoe salesmen, told him of my knee issues, and he suggested shoes with thicker soles. I don't have any more pain in my knees.
