About Dr. Jonathon David Backus
Reviews for Dr. Jonathon David Backus
After a terrible car accident I went to the ER at Alton Memorial, where I was referred for a follow-up visit with Dr Backus. Due to the swelling the appt was scheduled out for 2 weeks after my ER visit. My mom insisted I go to a different emergency room from worry due to the previous ER not doing a CT scan or concerning about my severe rib pain, giving very little medical attention the 5 hours there, while vomiting profusely. Missouri Baptist ER doctor referred to the results from Alton Memorial ER and gave no medical care. Finally I saw Dr. Backus who took the time to run the tests that the previous ER's did not, finding numerous issues from the car accident I was in. The results explained side effects I was having from a severe concussion, broken ribs, a very broken foot requiring surgery to correct. If it wasn't for Dr. Backus I would be in terrible condition.
In September of 2020 Doctor Backus performed a mid-foot fusion surgery. One year later my foot has healed from the surgery and I no longer have the constant pain I was experiencing. The original plan of a one year complete recovery is successful!
My experience with Dr. Backus was outstanding. He was very thorough in addressing questions and concerns. I am back to all my normal activities, sports etc. after surgery and rehab. Considering the state of my foot and ankle going in, my results exceeded my expectations.
I suffered a trimalleolar fracture of my right ankle June 14. Based on personal recommendations, I called Dr. Backus' office the next day. I was able to schedule for a consult on June 16. ORIF surgery was then scheduled for June 24. I followed his instructions to the letter post-surgery, and first put weight back on the ankle August 2. Since then, I have been doing PT twice a week for about 5 weeks, and I think that has helped speed my recovery. As of yesterday, Sept. 13, Dr. Backus cleared me for activities as my leg can tolerate. I'm not 100% yet, but I have no difficulty walking 2 miles in my neighborhood and doing light yard work. After gaining more strength, I plan to resume hiking later this fall, and I couldn't be happier with my progress. I was hoping I'd feel this good by Oct. 31, which is still 6+ weeks away. I can confidently recommend Dr. Backus for ankle injuries like mine!
Dr. Backus is a surgeon whom I feel is one of a kind. I work in healthcare and I can honestly say from a providers view I would recommend any of my patients to him for ortho repair. He completed a ORIF of my right ankle on November 3,2020 and as of today, just over four months out from my surgery I was able to get on my treadmill and walk a mile with resistance and no pain! He is knowledgeable, up to date on the current research, and most of all ensures his patient have a positive outcome! Thank you Dr. Backus for taking care of my ankle and getting me back to where I was just prior to the injury just 4 months post op!
Dr. Backus performed ankle surgery for a torn tendon. It was very successful and I no longer in pain. He is very caring and took the time to explain the procedure.
Quite simply, there aren't enough characters available to me to wax poetic about Dr. Backus. In short, I very recently had my last visit with him having had surgery in November for a fractured left distal fibula. All is well, and I almost want to break something again so that I can resume treatment! I'm joking, of course, so please know that if you're in need of an orthopedic surgeon you really couldn't do any better. Thank you, Dr. B! I also want to thank his assistant, Joe Sweet, for all his help. He was always thorough in his explanations, and more than patient if questions needed to be answered. They make a great team! I'm sorry that I don't have the names of anyone and everyone I encountered in the department -- from nurses to the folks who do the casts -- anyone who took x-rays.... All were the best.
I broke my ankle on a Sunday evening, I went to the ER where they took X-ray and put it in a splint. By 7:30 the next morning Dr.Backus’s office had reached out to set up an appointment that morning! When I arrived he had my X-rays and a plan to put my ankle back together. He was confident in his plan and answered all my questions. The surgery went well and I was up and walking again in no time! Dr. Backus was very kind and attentive. I couldn’t have had a better experience!
Dr. Backus repaired a Jones Fracture of the 5th metatarsal on my right foot. I had actually broken it 14 months prior to surgery, but my first doctor tried fixing it without surgery. I don't recommend that plan of action. I had my surgery this past January and, as of two weeks ago, my foot is finally healed one and a half years after I broke it! I still have some residual effects/numbness from the nerve block the anesthesiologists used. I'm told that may take awhile to go away, but I can live with that. I can finally walk with confidence and no pain. I highly recommend - and thank - Dr. Backus!!
Dr Bachus performed Mirco-Fracture Surgery on my Right Talus (Ankle) in February. Dr told me post op everything went great and he tested the ligaments and they were Good to go. (aka no need to open me all the way up and fix those) Now looking down the barrel of having to go back and have the micro fracture redone, which is bad enough, but also my ligaments are unstable and now those may need to be operated on as well. Yes, I was told post op they were good to go!! Trust me go to someone else unless you enjoy being laid up and ponying up for surgery and rehab multiple times. I am extremely satisfied with my experience with Dr. Backus. Dr. Backus performed a micro-fracture + modified Brostrom procedure on my left ankle to repair a talar dome lesion I sustained while playing soccer. I am currently 6.5 months post-op and no longer have any significant pain in my ankle and have been cleared to slowly start running again. Dr. Backus was very knowledgeable when explaining the pathology of my injury and how the repair would work. He was also straightforward with me when discussing the success rate of the repair before I had the procedure, as well as future lifestyle modifications I should adopt to ensure the longevity of the repair. He has an excellent bedside manner and was always patient in his interactions with me and my wife. I highly recommend Dr. Backus to anyone suffering from this type of injury.
After ten years of (often severe) pain from hallux rigidus in one of my feet, Dr. Backus performed a cheilectomy--removal of a painful bone spur restricting movement of the big toe joint. The procedure and recovery went smoothly and a few months later I'm now running and walking without pain. I noted and appreciated during my initial consultation that he gravitated towards the simplest, least invasive option likely to satisfactorily address the issue. Also, the whole departmental apparatus surrounding him--scheduling, screening, attention to my larger health picture, and follow-up, including thoughtful checkup calls in the days after the surgery--was amazing. My only regret is not getting this taken care of years ago.
My initial visit with Dr. Backus was very good. After looking at my x-rays, he immediately knew what he needed to do to help me recover from my accident. Dr. Backus was the 2nd orthopedic surgeon to tell me the break in my ankle was very bad. The first was at the Kansas University Medical Center, in KC where I broke my ankle while visiting. When I met Dr. Backus and after talking with him, I felt very confident in him and the decision I made after researching orthopedic surgeons in the St. Louis area. I would highly recommend Dr. Backus to anyone in need of his services. On my last visit, I asked him what I should expect, as far as healing over time; he was very honest and explained things thoroughly in terms that I understood. If I would ever need the same type of services again, I would not hesitate to go back to Dr. Backus. For me 5 stars are not enough for his expert knowledge and quality of services.

A little over a year ago, I could not walk. After a couple of consultations, I elected to have a Modified Brostrom procedure to repair the ligaments in my left ankle. Due to his comforting presence, knowledge-base, and sports focus, I elected to have Dr. Backus perform the operation. I am pleased to say that today I ran a full marathon. Although it wasn't my fastest time by just a few minutes, I ran completely pain-free and have never felt this strong after pushing hard through 26.2 miles. Dr. Backus is a professional in the truest sense and his skill and bedside manner are second to none. I highly recommend Dr. Backus!!! A little over a year ago, I could not walk. Dr Backus performed surgery on an Achilles avulsion and did a fantastic job! I returned to work exactly six months from the date of the injury with the confidence to fully complete my job functions. I was so pleased that every step of my recovery was exactly as Dr Backus had explained to me,no surprises! The staff at cornerstone is excellent and I highly recommend them!
Dr. Backus repaired my Achilles rupture back in February. The ER doc at Avista Hospital recommended Cornerstone. Scheduling was fast and easy and the staff is very friendly, especially Hilary. It was clear from the start that Dr. Backus was extremely knowledgeable about my injury. He presented all of my options, including non-surgical. He always takes time to answer questions and I never feel rushed. And, my surgery was a great success and my scar is barely visible!
Dr, Backus, assistant Hillery Magness and PT Elena were the best. At age 59, active and I would like to think in decent shape, I wanted an assertive, sports-oriented team that would get me "back in the saddle" soon. After two months, a plate and eight screws in my fibula, I was returning to yoga, and very soon after horseback riding. Three months out now, except for swelling, which is to be expected, I am doing everything I did before and I have no pain. This team respected my desire to rehab fast and aggressively. Thank you. I was very happy with Dr. Backus and Hillary. Spot on with the diagnosis and the level of care. Awesome bedside manner after surgery. Hillary was very easy to get in touch with. I highly recommend Dr. Backus.
I had a fairly difficult ankle injury and was referred to Dr. Backus by an ER doc friend of mine. Every experience I had with Dr. Backus and his staff at Cornerstone was exceptional. 6 months after my surgery I was able to bike and ski. Best of all I haven’t had any ankle pain in months.
Dr. Backus did a tendon repair in my ankle. Upon my initial meeting with him, I felt very comfortable. After my surgery, I felt like every time I was in there it was a burden. He was very dismissive. About 9 months after my surgery, I was still having pain and swelling. Instead of examining my ankle or getting any images. He said I should have injections. At this point I got a 2nd opinion. Had to have 2nd surgery to fix tear in the exact same tendon.

Dr Backus was great from the beginning-- when I saw him after my ankle injury, through my surgery and recovery, and on through visits during my physical therapy. He always took time to listen to my concerns, explain what was going on and answer my questions. This relieved a lot of my anxiety about my injury. The staff and physical therapists were also awesome to work with. I have recommended Dr. Backus to others and will continue to do so. Thanks, Doc!
Dr Backus was easy to work with and very knowledgeable. I had a decision to make about whether to get surgery (outer ligament tear ankle) or to try and treat the injury thru pt alone. The Dr was very clear in explaining the pros and cons of both. Ultimately I had a successful surgery and recovery. During the recovery process Dr Backus was helpful with any questions I had. Additionally cornerstone orthapedics was easy to work with and I'm overall happy with that experience as well.
If you ever need an orthopedic surgeon for any reason, I highly recommend Dr. Backus. He removed two bunions that had been causing me pain for years and was very knowledgeable and patient when explaining the exact surgical plan & post-op care. One foot is almost a year post-op & the other about 3 months and both feel AMAZING. The surgical scars are tiny and more importantly I am no longer in pain and actually healed quicker than expected. 10/10 would recommend
I highly recommend Dr. Backus. the quality of care was exceptional, he is extremely knowledgeable, caring, proffesional and down to earth. I came to him with a very serious ankle injury, and was in his care throughout surgery and for post op visits as well. I never questioned that the quality of care was top notch.
I'm 42 and tore my tibio fibular ligament skiing. I was unaware of the degree of my injury but the swelling was a concern so I made an appointment with Dr. Backus. Upon exam he diagnosed the tear. Dr. Backus was great throughout the process. I felt like he gave me advice as if we were friends and he certainly had my best interest in mind. The surgery went great and now I have no pain stiffness or discomfort in any way. Not even swelling! I'm honestly amazed and thankful it ended so well.
Dr. Backus is an outstanding surgeon. He has a wonderful bedside manner and really takes interest in the patient and their recovery. My daughter was treated by him as a college athlete and he provided the very best treatment possible to her to help her return to the field. We felt very comfortable with the entire process because of Dr. Backus and his team. We felt very fortunate that we found Dr. Backus and would highly recommend him. Outstanding surgeon and physician-one in a million!!
I injured my foot this past season and was lucky enough to come across Dr. Backus. He went through the whole process with me (I had two surgeries with him.) I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Backus, he explained everything about my injury as well as the plan to fix my foot without any confusion. He was easy to contact throughout the whole process, and it was clear the passion he has for his work. I felt completely safe going into surgery with him and wouldn't have wanted anyone else.
Dr. Backus, assistant Hillery Magness and Cornerstone Wheatridge Physical Therapist Elena were nothing short of perfect! After fibula surgery necessary from a horse kick (a plate and 8 screws), I knew that I had found what I wanted in a surgeon, assistant and therapist... assertive, sports medicine-oriented rehab for the quickest, most thorough recovery possible. Two months later, I have no pain.... still a little swelling which is to be expected. Back in my yoga classes, riding my horse, etc.
I had a fractured fibula and was referred to see Denver Health orthopedic but unfortunately couldn't get in for about 4 weeks with them. I google orthopedic clinics near me and fell upon Dr. Backus office. He was able to get me in the same week, and let me know how severe my injury was. I was able to schedule surgery with him the following week. After surgery my incision is amazing work I have seen by far. He was very caring and understanding, and was able to help me address work paperwork immediately and over all an amazing physician. Thank you Dr. Backus for all your amazing work and help with me. I truly appreciate it. I recommend to anyone to use this clinic. They are an awesome team. Dr. Backus installed two metal plates and 10 screws in my ankle. He was compassionate and patient when listening to my questions and concerns and he was honest and straightforward with his answers. I appreciate his surgical skill and human bedside manner - I was not just a number to him. The office staff was great and the physical therapy right next door was very convenient. Kudos to Dr. Backus and to Cornerstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. I highly recommend Dr. Backus!
I saw Dr. Backus after breaking my ankle while ice skating. Unfortunately the ER doctor did not do a great job setting my break in the emergency room, so Dr. Backus and his team had to reset my ankle in his office. Dr. Backus made me comfortable and even got me to laughing through the procedure. He performed surgery a few days later and took the time to personally update my husband. My recovery has been remarkable and I was back to normal activity in record time. I would highly recommend him!
From day one, to my final visit, Dr. Backus has been nothing short of extraordinary. He answered every question I had from the get go with confidence and honesty. I never once felt like I needed clarification, as he was alway concise. I can't tell you how much easier he made going through an Achilles rupture repair. Said injury occurred 10/4/16. Surgery on 10/10/16. Today is 4/6/17 and I've been fully cleared. < 6 months recovery. That speaks for itself. Dr. Backus and staff are a bonus.
My dad broke his ankle right a few days before Christmas and Dr Backus got him in right away to be seen. Surgery, unfortunately, was delayed for a couple weeks by the holidays but he got him scheduled as soon after the New Year as possible. Surgery went well and Dr Backus and his team communicated with us the entire time. While he had a few bumps during his recovery, Dr Backus took it slow and took his activity level prior to the injury into consideration. He is now up and about doing well.
I had seen multiple doctors over the course of the last year regarding the constant pain in my foot. I went to PT twice a week for 8 months and changed up my orthopedic shoe inserts. Surgery was my final option and Dr. Backus spent at least an hour with me, reviewing my options. The final decision was a minor surgery and everything went wonderfully! His bedside manner is excellent and I was completely confident in his abilities. In a very short period of time, I was back to running pain free!
Amazing! Direct, kind, talented. His work on my husbands broken ankle was equisite!
I had never had any major health issues but in August of 2016, I fell down the stairs and ended up needing a full ankle reconstruction surgery. Dr. Backus was recommended by another surgeon who first treated my injury. I was very surprised with how efficient the process was, from first visit to surgery. I was scheduled right away. But the most important thing for me was 1. the short recovery time and 2. the fact that I have absolutely no pain! Surgery was 3 months ago and I am back running!
Expert orthopedic care. Recovered earlier than normal schedule. Great PT available.
